Team Player - Stories of Coaching and Leadership

We're welcoming another state champ into the Team Player Studios this week y'all! He lead the Robstown Early College HS Girls Powerlifting team to the state championship in their FIRST year of existence! What is he going to do for an encore?? That performance earned him a big ole sparkly state championship ring and the 2022 Austin College Coach of the Year Award! He is also the Defensive Coordinator for the football team and the Assistant Athletic Director RECHS, it's my honor and pleasure to welcome DeAndre Holmes to the show! - Growing up in Fort Worth before heading 20 minutes outside of town to Haltom, TX - Coach Kovo and DeAndre had a frank talk about race and the impact of diversity and importance of representation - Listen to the laugh out loud story of how the self proclaimed "mama's boy" ended up at Austin College in Sherman, TX and how on his first visit to campus he honestly thought he was heading down to the Hill Country - A life-changing interaction with an elementary school student led Coach Holmes to change his career path away from Pharmacy and toward education. DeAndre bucks the old PE or History Coaching Stereotype, as he is now proudly a coach of color that uses his background in science to teach Chemistry - After starting his coaching career close to home at South Hills HS in Fort Worth, DeAndre decided he wanted a change of scenery in order to challenge himself to the utmost. It's been a bit of a challenge for his mom who always wanted him close to home, but he has achieved new heights in his career by making the trek 6 hours South to the Corpus Christi area and Robstown Early College HS - Finally Coach is a lifetime Dallas Cowboys fan, but it was the "We Believe" era Golden State Warriors with stars like Baron Davis, Jason Richardson, and Stephen Jackson who made him re-evaluate his lifetime Mavs fandom at they became the 1st ever #8 seed to eliminate a #1 seed in a 7-game series. He found the team whose gritty style of play he loved over just rooting for the hometown team and his allegiance has been sealed ever since. So we play some fun Cowboys Start/Bench/Cuts with names like Smith, Johnston, and Elliott, find out why Coach thinks that Terrell Owens is the greatest Cowboy to ever do it even over the ever-popular "Playmaker" Michael Irvin, and find out which Cowboys defender is his favorite of all-time, hint: it's not Primetime Deion Sanders! Then we end with some Dubs Start/Bench/Cuts, get Coach's take on KD, and how Steph Curry stacks up against the other elite Point Guards in the NBA Start/Bench/Cuts are brought to you by our good friends at MVP Marketing Group: A Turnkey Solution for Schools. Coach Al Westover on the highs and lows of the Melbourne Tigers championship years

The Melbourne Tigers left possibly the biggest imprint in Australian basketball history, winning four NBL championships in fifteen years (1993 to 2008) and being home to basketball royalty like Andrew Gaze, Lanard Copeland, Mark Bradtke and Chris Anstey. Al Westover, who was born in California and originally left the states to join the Tigers as a player during the 1970s, re-joined the team as a coach in 1992 and was a part of all four of the club's championship runs. Al, who left the Tigers after playing in one NBL season with the team, returned eight years later to assist head coach Lindsay Gaze, a partnership which lasted until 2005 when Lindsay retired, and Al was named head coach. In his first year as coach, Al not only won the NBL Coach of the Year Award but won the NBL championship with a re-tooled roster featuring Chris Anstey on his return from stints in the NBA and Europe. Two years later, Westover and Anstey won another NBL Championship, a feat that saw Westover become the first coach in NBL history to reach the Grand Final in each of his first four years as coach, resulting in two Championships and two Runners Up. Four NBL Championships and four runners-up later, Al was unceremoniously fired from his coaching role with the Tigers and never coached again in the NBL. Westover remains the second-winningest coach in NBL history (134-74 win-loss record). Topics include... Where Al Westover is coaching these days (2:00) Arriving in Australia as a player and memories of the VBL of the '70s and '80s (4:00) Why the Melbourne Tigers chose to play in the Victorian Basketball League instead of the NBL in the 1980s (7:00) Playing in the NBL during the 1980s and memories of the competition (10:00) Joining the Tigers as an assistant coach (11:00) How the Melbourne Tigers linked China to the NBL (14:00) The Tigers V Magic rivalry of the 1990s (17:00) The Tigers' first championship in 1993 (19:00) The second title in 1997 (21:00) How Lindsey and Alan juggled the coaching responsibilities of the team between 1992 and 2005 (24:00) Taking over as coach in 2005 and adding Chris Anstey to the roster (25:30) Winning the 2006 championship as head coach of the Tigers (27:00) Falling short to the Brisbane Bullets in 2007 (32:00) Coaching Chris Anstey (36:00) Coaching against his former Tigers teammate Brian Goorjian (40:00) Facing the South Dragons in the Tigers' fourth Grand Final in four years (44:00) Did the ‘Gaze Era' Melbourne Tigers underachieve by only winning two titles (48:00) The Tigers sack Al Westover despite delivering 4 Grand Final appearances in five seasons (49:30) Coaching in Japan (57:00) The highlights and learning moments of his basketball journey (59:00) Visit dunk.com.au for your next set of basketball uniforms. What's the Best Way to Brew Meat?

Innovation is weird. One moment, you're an early human spending half the day chewing raw, possibly tainted meat. The next, you're sending your prehistoric carp back to the waiter because it “just wasn't the same as last time.” Let's talk about technological breakthroughs, and let's do it through the lens of two stories that dropped, seemingly in sync, the other week.  Big news in the world of archaeological geochemistry: Scientists in Israel recently discovered evidence that humans have been cooking food for at least 780,000 years. Pretty cool, given that we previously believed we've been doing so for a measly 170,000 years. And make no mistake, at the time this discovery was no less high-tech than mapping the genome or — and of equal importance — the invention of the scratch and sniff sticker. But that was then, and this is now. Just the other day, the FDA gave the FDA-OK to the folks over at Upside Foods, a startup in the business of making lab-grown meat. If you're not familiar, this is crazy stuff, all enabled by a process in which scientists brew actual animal meat cells in a lab for human consumption. If it all works out, this could be a “learn-to-cook-fish” moment for the species, as proponents of the stuff boast that it can help with everything from saving our air to preventing the next pandemic.  And don't get us started on what happens when the 3D-printing technicians start trading notes with the lab-grown meat scientists… JOURNOS is produced by Brandon R. Tim Soares joins the Sydney Kings as one of their newest imports, and he's focused on being the best centre in the league and leading the team to back-to-back championships. He's a player who has taken an unusual journey to reach the NBL. With his mother and father, both professional basketball players who met while in Brazil, he developed his early game in Brazil (he is only the second NBL player ever to grow up in Brazil) before moving to the USA to play college basketball. With his family having a strong Christian faith, he chose to play at the little-known Master's University in California, an NAIA school, before nominating for the NBA Draft. Due to COVID-19 he was unable to participate in any pre-draft workouts for teams and ultimately wasn't selected in the 2020 NBA Draft. Since then, he's played in Turkey and Israel prior to signing a deal to play in Australia, which he hopes to use as a springboard to the NBA like former Brazilian and Sydney Kings star Didi Louzada. He joins Dan Boyce on the podcast to take us through all of this and much, much more. Topics include... As part two of our Saturday double bill, our Chris Wynn was joined by Stephen Jackson of Boro Podcast - Tw12th Man - to look ahead to Sunderland's first trip to the Riverside since February 2018, as Middlesbrough legend Tony Mowbray returns to his old stomping grounds with the Red & White army in tow! What's the crack? Been a while hasn't it…How have our southern cousins been the past few years? Have they missed us at all? What are the thoughts on Teeside about Sunderland's recent appointment of Mogga? He's quite well liked down there, so will he get a good reception from the home crowd? Chris has a quick rummage about the history of our regional neighbours, and gets Stephen's thoughts on what exactly these games are; Is it a derby? Do they care? Do we care? Are we both pretending we don't care because we don't know if the other one actually does? How is Chris Wilder managing at the Riverside - are the Boro fans content or are things looking a bit dicey for him currently? What do the lads think would be a fair result, are there any nerves ahead of this one? All this and more! ICYMI: as mentioned above we also have a nice little reaction pod covering SAFC's transfer dealings from our Gav and Craig, which should be sat just behind the pod you're listening to now, if you fancy a bit more Lads chatter before the game! Defacing the Mona Lisa and DALL•E's Horrifying Netherworld of AI-Driven Art

What makes life worth living? What kind of cake does the Mona Lisa prefer? What does a chair made of avocados look like?  Art, in its many forms, seeks to answer all of the above. And for years, humans have enjoyed a near monopoly on creating it. But things are changing — and fast. Here, we take a look at people, our penchant for environmental destruction, and our even stronger proclivity for creating technology that may one day wipe us from the face of the earth — but not before creating next year's fall lineup on Netflix.  First, what makes life worth living? We begin with a meditation on Sagan's Pale Blue Dot, spurred by the release of the first ego-melting images from the James Webb Space Telescope. What should we feel? Nihilism or reaffirmed humanism?  Either way, we should probably start taking care of our humble cosmic abode. Or at least that's what some plucky guerrilla environmental art-activists think over in the Old Country (Europe).  Speaking of Europe, what kind of cake does the Mona Lisa prefer? A few months back, one guy dressed up like grandma over at The Louvre and found out she never touches the stuff — the hard way. In an attempt to warn and admonish us of our planet-killing ways, the man physically attacked the famed woman with that weird half smile, smearing cake across her bulletproof shield. He did it in the name of the environment, as did a group of like-minded eco-Marxists who glued themselves to a couple of paintings at The Royal Academy in London a few weeks later. Methods of communication aside, they raise a decent point: Why make art in a world that might not be around for future generations? Which brings us to our final question (and another one): What does a chair made of avocados look like? Moreover, what does an “emo sausage roll… waiting for a bus that might never arrive” look like? The answers to these queries and more are deftly proffered by the latest AI-craze to hit the internet, DALL•E — an AI art program that scrapes the world's content to produce hellish visions of the digital subconscious. So what hath DALL•E wrought? Are artists out of a job? It's not clear yet, but we've certainly got some ideas. Join us, and give this one an ear-gander. Heck, who knows how much longer this show will be hosted by humans at all.  JOURNOS is produced by Heather “Eagle Ears” Wilson. Illustration by Stephen Jackson.

News around the Lakers has been dominated by potential trades, whether for Kyrie Irving or Myles Turner and Buddy Hield. Tuesday, the rumor mill was quiet, giving everyone a break. At least for a day. And we learned the Lakers made a low key important move, as ESPN's Marc Spears reported a contract extension for assistant coach Phil Handy. As one of the most respected assistants in the game, with a strong background in player development, the franchise (and new head coach Darvin Ham) need his skill set in a big way. A contract extension may not keep him here forever - there is always chatter Handy could end up a head coach - but it helps. Handy's ability as a communicator becomes important as Ham moves to a different role than he has traditionally played. Darvin won't stop talking with players, and won't stop dealing with them straight, but there's a difference between being head coach and an assistant when it comes to the freedom players often feel to talk about issues they might have. Having Phil Handy around fills that space in a high end way. Meanwhile, one guy who won't be on the staff? Rasheed Wallace, apparently. Despite a summer of rumors, Shams Charania of The Athletic reports the Lakers won't be adding him to Ham's coaching group. From there, we learned more about Ham when he was a guest on the All the Smoke podcast with Matt Barnes and Stephen Jackson. Great insight into Ham's attention to detail when it comes to people and culture. And more context into why he views this job as a challenge, and feels confident the pressure won't beat him down. He knows it's there, obviously, but doesn't seem likely to be ruled by it. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: Phil Handy gets an extension. SEGMENT 2: Why Phil matters, especially given Ham's shift from lead assistant to head man. SEGMENT 3: More evidence Ham has the mental makeup to do this job well. LeBron James, O.J. Simpson, and Dave Portnoy are some of the big names to speak out for women after the Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe. Why? They are all entitled to a lifestyle of meaningless sex, free of consequence. Stephen Jackson posts his interactions with gangs in Chicago on social media, but Jason isn't mad. In fact, he explains why Jackson is doing better than other people and why black gangs really do matter. After the Roe v. Wade decision, Reverend Al Sharpton speaks out against Christians who are against abortion. He preaches from the ‘Book of Alfred' about poisonous political prophecy. Former NBA star Stephen Jackson made social media headlines over the weekend after posting a video of himself hanging out with members of a notorious Chicago gang. The clip shows the NBA champion covered in diamond jewelry and surrounded by young men throwing up gang signs. While Jason doesn't agree with some of Jackson's tactics, he does give him credit. ”I don't believe in distancing myself from the people at the bottom of American society. The most vulnerable people in American society, I don't think we can just walk away from those guys and ignore them and hope that they go away.” Jason shares his thoughts on why Black Gangs Matter and welcomes the perspective of Jackson's friend, colleague, and "Fearless" soldier Royce White. Roe v. Wade continues to be the topic of discussion around the country, but is it a point of discussion in America's church? Furthermore, should it be? In Tennessee Harmony, Jason welcomes Pastor Anthony Walker and special guest Pastor Ron Tucker of Grace Church STL. The trio tackles the role of the church in combating the country's culture war. Plus, Jason seeks advice from the pastors over a recent Twitter interaction with Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Tyler Lockett.   Today's Sponsor: July 4th is almost here!
