Aussie Hoopla NBL & NBA Podcast
Isaac Burton (Sydney Kings) his time in the NBL, the Arizona State point shaving scandal and the Netflix documentary "Bad Sports"

Aussie Hoopla NBL & NBA Podcast

Isaac Burton played 96 games in the NBL over four seasons with both the Sydney Kings and the Newcastle Falcons. A defensive ball hawk who excited the crowd with flashy dunks was a fan favourite in Sydney and the NBL during the late 1990s and early 2000s. Burton became embroiled in a point-shaving scandal during his time playing basketball (and baseball) at Arizona State University, a moment in history that has recently been made into a Netflix documentary called "Bad Sports". The documentary focuses primarily on the players at the centre of the ASU scandal, namely Stevin “Hedake” Smith and Burton, but it also zooms out to lay bare the real villain in their story: the NCAA, which doled out stipends so insufficient that athletes came to see point-shaving as their only means of survival.  Burton re-joins Aussie Hoopla to go into further detail on the point-shaving incident, discuss his involvement in the crimes and interactions with the FBI and how it impacted him. He also discusses his time playing basketball in Australia and Cyprus with Dan, remembering some of the highlights and lowlights from his career. Topics include... The Netflix documentary "Bad Sports" and why Isaac decided to be a part of it (2:00) Burton's relationship today with Stevin "Hedake" Smith (5:30) Why Isaac chose to play basketball instead of baseball despite being drafted to the MLB three times (8:00) Growing up in Los Angeles in the 80s and 90s and the dangers he faced growing up (11:00) His college experience playing baseball and basketball at both East Los Angeles Community College and Arizona State (14:30) Arriving at Arizona State, meeting Stevin Smith and how they spent their time on campus (16:30) How the investigation began and his interactions with the FBI (19:00) Graduating college and signing with the Sydney Kings (23:00) The reasons Isaac loved living in Sydney (28:00) His first day at training with the Sydney Kings and who he spent time with on the team (30:00) Facing off against Andrew Gaze, Darryl McDonald, Ricky Grace and other NBL legends (35:00) Playing against Allen Iverson (39:00) Shane Heal heads to the NBA and his second season with the Kings (40:00) Matt Nielsen's emergence into an NBL star (46:00) An NBA try-out with the Phoenix Suns (47:00) His friendship with Latrell Sprewell and the tension present during his time with the Warriors that culminated with him choking coach PJ Carlesimo (52:00) His season with the Newcastle Falcons in 1998 (55:00) His revenge game against the Kings while with the Falcons (58:00) How Isaac spent 2000-2001 in prison but was allowed out to play basketball for the Las Vegas Silver Bandits IBL team (102:00) A return to Sydney in 2001 (1:07:00) Playing basketball in Cyprus (1:11:00 ) Thoughts on college players being paid to play (1:13:00) What life lessons Isaac took away from the point-shaving experience (1:18:00) Visit dunk.com.au for your next set of basketball uniforms. Coach C. Collins and Coach MJ are ready to talk more AAU basketball, life and everything in between. In this episode, the coaches get the chance to sit down with a legend on the court Vernon "Schea" Cotton.  This man has all the knowledge and accolades to back up any sort of hype he received.   He released a documentary in 2016 entitled "Man Child", it has won various awards and Schea is currently on tour showing the movie in various places and also spreading the word of his cautionary tale of highs and lows.  This man is an LA legend and the coaches are honored to be able to sit down and ask about his journey. Coach MJ being from LA he has plenty of memories of the LA superstar who was quoted by Kevin Garnett as being "Lebron before there was a Lebron".  In his documentary former Warriors Baron Davis and Stephen Jackson, as well as Paul Pierce and Elton Brand are among those appearing in the film.  Tyson Chandler also shares his memories of young Schea, as does NFL Hall of Famer Randy Moss, as written by NBC sports.   If you wish to support the show Podbean Patron: https://patron.podbean.com/boutthatlifeaau Patreon Account: https://www.patreon.com/join/Boutthatlife? The coaches talk about the different story lines of the NBA like the Warriors off to a hot start and the Lakers struggling with the "Westbrook" experiment. The discussions are hard hitting and very grounded this episode so you don't want to miss out.  Coaches being held accountable as leaders of young men and women is also brought up and a special shout out to Coach Deonard Wilson of Grant high school for making this episode happen and as always there are no punches pulled.   If you wish to support the show Podbean Patron: https://patron.podbean.com/boutthatlifeaau Patreon Account: https://www.patreon.com/join/Boutthatlife? The Perth Wildcats announced the surprise signing of exciting import Vic Law for the 2021/22 NBL season. While many hoops tragics were convinced Law was likely to be in Brisbane for a second season, Law instead headed west and will look to pair with NBL MVP Bryce Cotton and help the Wildcats secure their eleventh NBL championship. Last season Law averaged 18.8 points, 8.4 rebounds per game (fourth in NBL), 2.6 assists and 0.6 steals before suffering a season-ending ankle injury in his first NBL season in the NBL. The injury kept him out of action for five months but once he had rehabbed the injury he was offered the opportunity to play for the Los Angeles Lakers at the recent NBA Summer League in Las Vegas. Law averaged 10.0 points and 4.3 rebounds for the Lakers NBA Summer League team, including a game-winning performance against the Clippers where he came up with the clutch triple and defensive play to seal the win.  Law played his college basketball at Northwestern University before a short stint with the Orlando Magic in the NBA. Kakorrhaphiophobia is defined as the abnormal fear of failure. There is an ongoing narrative (widely disputed by several publications) that 50% of marriages end in divorce. Unvetted belief in this narrative (among several other factors) has greatly contributed to many people having kakorrhaphiophobia towards nuptials. If celebrity relationships are "goals" for people on the fence about tying the knot... This week didn't help. Singer Miguel & his wife Nazanin called it quits after 17 years together. Will & Jada's marriage made it's way back to headlines (post 'entanglement') as Will confirmed via an interview with GQ magazine that he & wife Jada have an open, "unconventional" relationship. If those two marriage bombshells weren't enough to quell your nuptial naivety... Actress Gabrielle Union admitted that she (in her current form) would NOT have taken back husband Dwyane Wade if "break baby-gate" had happened today, & former NBA player Stephen Jackson shares the story of him leaving his bride to be at the alter after she reneged on signing a prenup. The Vexed Intellects discuss these stories plus... Snus in the anus, fire-starting boiled bear piss, Dez Bryant vs Colin Kaepernick/Jemele Hill, NBA anti-vaxers, Gen Zers' propensity for pics/relationship aesthetics over actual healthy relationships, & a rare condition that caused a man to ejaculate from his rectum for two years before seeking Medical assistance. Malice at the Palace is a prime example of when emotions get the best of us. We discuss all the factors that led to the worst brawl in US' sports history involving fans and players. It is important to note that in each individual and in each setting there is a threshold of emotions and once that is crossed fight or flight is initiated and all bets are off. We discussed how the most vital aspect of the construction of a championship team is the creation of a bond or brotherhood or sisterhood that goes beyond the basketball court. With a culture of connectedness it is easier to overcome clashes of personalities, failures and any other shortcoming. This is also a story of resilience and how these individuals were able to bounce back and grow from this experience through mental fitness, specifically being able to connect with others therefore allowing them to be able to connect and feel more confident with themselves. Mental Fitness techniques featured: communication, mindfulness, gratitude, confidence Individuals featured: Metta Sandiford-Artest (Ron Artest), Jermaine O'Neal, Reggie Miller, Stephen Jackson, Ben Wallace, Draymond Green, Dennis Rodman

The 2021 Netflix documentary “Untold: Malice in the Palace” unpacks some overlooked elements of a riot that broke out during an Indiana Pacers/Detroit Pistons in November 2004. The careers of Pacers' Jermaine O'Neal, Reggie Miller, Stephen Jackson, and Ron Artest (Metta World Peace) were all impacted in the aftermath. All but Miller received suspensions…and he chose to retire at the end of the season (his 18th}. Many involved in the melee also faced criminal charges. All of this coming after the small-market Pacers were widely believed to be on track for an NBA title. NBA rules also changed in the aftermath. Many people think they changed for the worse. How did it really start? Was there a rush to judgment against the players? Were players or fans more at fault? What role did racism…and the intersection of hip-hop culture and NBA culture…play in the reaction to and punishment for the events that night? Did the off-court legal troubles of other NBA players in the couple of years preceding this event affect the public's opinion of these players…and the NBA in general? We kick off the episode with a couple of topics that Mike's been discussing on his stream this week: no fap…and Wim Hoff breathing.
