The Melbourne Tigers left possibly the biggest imprint in Australian basketball history, winning four NBL championships in fifteen years (1993 to 2008) and being home to basketball royalty like Andrew Gaze, Lanard Copeland, Mark Bradtke and Chris Anstey. Al Westover, who was born in California and originally left the states to join the Tigers as a player during the 1970s, re-joined the team as a coach in 1992 and was a part of all four of the club's championship runs. Al, who left the Tigers after playing in one NBL season with the team, returned eight years later to assist head coach Lindsay Gaze, a partnership which lasted until 2005 when Lindsay retired, and Al was named head coach. In his first year as coach, Al not only won the NBL Coach of the Year Award but won the NBL championship with a re-tooled roster featuring Chris Anstey on his return from stints in the NBA and Europe. Two years later, Westover and Anstey won another NBL Championship, a feat that saw Westover become the first coach in NBL history to reach the Grand Final in each of his first four years as coach, resulting in two Championships and two Runners Up. Four NBL Championships and four runners-up later, Al was unceremoniously fired from his coaching role with the Tigers and never coached again in the NBL. Westover remains the second-winningest coach in NBL history (134-74 win-loss record). Topics include... Chris Anstey is a former pro basketball player, whose 17 year career included stints in Russia, Spain and playing for the Chicago Bulls & Dallas Mavericks in the NBA. He is a 2-time Olympian, World Champion and World Championship MVP. Chris also played for the Melbourne Tigers, South East Melbourne Magic, and Victoria Titans in the Australian NBL. He retired as a 2-time Championship winning captain and MVP, with 3 NBL titles to his name and later became the Melbourne Tigers head coach in 2012. Chris' pathway is unique and unlike many who do make it to the big time in basketball, he only discovered his basketball talent by accident. With tennis being his original number 1 sport code of choice. Chris shares the journey to being drafted to the NBA and what it was like playing in the league including travelling and what their hectic schedule consisted of on the road. He opened up about the pressure of playing for the Bulls after the Jordan era of success and the reality around earning huge money but still feeling unfulfilled in life. We got to pick Chris' brain on how important it is for athletes at all levels to celebrate the wins as well as gathering together after the losses. He shared with us a couple of post match non negotiable traditions that helped create a winning culture. Chris spoke from the heart on numerous other points including why we must let go of the term ‘retirement' when a professional athlete leaves his or her profession as a pro athlete. He shared his battles away from the court including a marriage break up and the harsh realities that come with going through a divorce. It was incredibly raw and we were blown away by his vulnerability. If you're a basketball fan or not, you are going to love this amazing conversation with the legend that is Chris Anstey. Our guest this week is former professional basketball player Chris Anstey. Chris and our host, Emma Doyle grew up playing tennis together from the age of 10 at Maribyrnong Park Tennis Club. They have remained very close mates ever since. Emma seized the opportunity to interview Chris when he recently visited her in Denver, Colorado while on a tour to the US to watch his daughter, Izzy Anstey, who plays for the UCLA basketball team. Please find below some of the highlights that you will hear about coaching for success in sport and the workplace. Worse Coaching Moment – when you are ‘trying' to 'show' your ability to coach. Anything you accept and walk past on day one of your coaching job, you need to accept for the duration of your tenure. Coaching Women's Sports – Educate your female players to hold tightly those people who compliment you and the positive affirmations you get. Embrace differences – don't just do things because other people have always done them. Find time in everything you do to invest in yourself. You can't be motivated every day but what you can have are incredible habits and behaviours. Are you prepared to get a little uncomfortable even though you don't know what the outcome is going to be yet? How do you deal with a superstar within a team – “I always coach the best player the hardest.” Statistics should be used like a lamppost, for support, not illumination.” You have to build a culture around people, not around the data. Parents – “Let the coach, coach.” Don't only coach the what, coach the why? Athletes and team members want to know the why. Chris Anstey is a father of three, and a former professional basketball player, whose 17-year career included stints in the National Basketball Association (NBA), Russia and Spain. A 2-time Olympian, World Champion and World Championship MVP, Chris also played for the Melbourne Tigers, South East Melbourne Magic, and Victoria Titans in the Australian NBL. He retired as a 2-time Championship winning captain and MVP, with 3 NBL titles to his name. He became the Melbourne Tigers head coach in 2012. Anstey was selected at #18 in the 1997 NBA Draft, becoming the first player in history to be drafted from Australia's NBL. Chris has coached male and female basketball teams at all levels- professional, world and national championships, state, high school, and club. Chris Anstey is an ex professional basketball player, a 2-time Olympian, coach, speaker and now recently an author. Some of Chris's incredible accomplishments include a World Champion and World Championship MVP. He retired as a 2-time Championship winning captain and MVP, with 3 NBL titles to his name and also coached the Melbourne Tigers. He was selected at #18 in the 1997 NBA Draft, becoming the first player in history to be drafted from Australia's NBL. His book “Tall Tales” is now out and its fantastic read where he shares many stories of his learnings through his career and life. Here's a small snippet from it, “I knew all along, however, that my journey brought me into contact with some amazing people. These people taught me many lessons, on and off the basketball court, that helped shape the person I am today. They moulded my philosophy around finding our own personal best and broadened the lens I now see the world through. These are the people whose lessons I felt a responsibility to share when I began coaching. After all, not everyone had been lucky enough to spend the time around them as I had. These are their stories”. We got an Australian Basketball legend joining us today. We have former NBA and NBL player Lanard Copeland in the house! He is one of the NBL's great high-flyers and automatic scorers and he has an inspiring journey that is like no other. Trust us!Lanard Copeland was cut every single year from his high school team. In fact, the very first jersey that he ever wore was his first year of college basketball at Georgia State. After not being selected in the 1989 NBA Draft, Copeland again had to prove that he belonged on the basketball court. He worked his way into the NBA where he played 2 years in the NBA for the 76ers and Clippers. Copeland continued his basketball career in the NBL where he had a Hall of Fame career that included 5 All Star appearances, 2 NBL Championships, a Grand Finals MVP and his number 21 being retired. Not bad for a guy who was cut from his high school team. Copeland shares great stories about growing up in ATL, Georgia State, Willie Brown, journey to NBA, David Robinson, Charles Barkley, Rick Mahorn, Hersey Hawkins, Michael Jordan, Larry Johnson, Andrew Gaze, growth of NBL and MUCH more. This was truly an honor to learn more about Copeland's basketball journey today. His story is one that will help and inspire a lot of young athletes who may have been cut from their teams but still have a deep love and passion for the game. This is the ultimate success story from never wearing a jersey until college to raising a jersey to rafters. We know you're going to love this one!Thank you Lanard Copeland! You can find this episode on Apple, Spotify or any source for podcasts.Follow us on social media!Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/notin.myhouse.79Instagram- @Not_in_my_house_podcastTwitter - @NOTINMYHOUSEpc

Believe in yourself or nobody else will. This really is one of the most inspiring hoop journeys that we have had the honor to learn about. It's our pleasure to have Darryl McDonald in the house! Of course like any hoop fan we can watch his highlight reels on repeat in awe, but it was truly special to look beyond the highlights and hear about the work put in and the obstacles that had to be overcome to reach success. The no-look passes, incredible handles, and knack for steals make the nickname “Mr. Excitement” more than fitting. The Rucker Park legend dropped out of high school and never played a minute of High School basketball. His path from the blacktop to Westchester CC to Texas A&M itself will earn your respect, but the grind isn't even close to ending there. He was not selected in the 1988 NBA Draft and would be cut multiple times from the CBA and other professional leagues. Nearly every hooper's basketball dreams would be shattered, but D-Mac kept hooping, kept grinding, and found a home in the NBL. He is the NBL's all-time leader in steals, 2nd All-time in assists, a 3x NBL Champion, 2x Allstar game MVP and his fingerprints are all over the growth of basketball in Australia. We are very grateful for our time with D-Mac. This episode will inspire a lot of young athletes and he shared some great stories about growing up in Harlem, Rucker Park, Joe Hammond, Texas A&M, the draft process, both the lifestyle & grind of the CBA, Brett Brown, NBL, coaching, kangaroos and MUCH more including perhaps one of the most bizarre overseas stories we have ever heard on this show! We know you're all in for a good one today.Thank you Darryl McDonald!Follow us on social media!Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/notin.myhouse.79Instagram- @Not_in_my_house_podcastTwitter - @NOTINMYHOUSEpc

Melbourne Tigers great Chris Anstey talks: Do Australian basketball fans want to hit skip on the Ben Simmons era in favour of Josh Giddey as the Boomers PG? Should the NBL have shutdown in 2009? If winning is everything in 'Boomers culture' why didn't Ricky Grace play more minutes at Sydney 2000? How to be critical in commentary without being an a**hole? Why isn't Chris commentating anymore? And what made/makes Chris' relationship with the equally jaded, at that time when they played together in Russia anyway, Paul Shirley. Luke Nevill grew up playing basketball for the Stirling Senators in Western Australia. After struggling to get noticed by elite coaches in Australia he moved to the United States to play high school basketball with Kell High School in Marietta, Georgia. It didn't take long to be noticed by the University of Utah and accepted a scholarship in 2004. He decided to redshirt his first year as a Utah Ute and developed his skills during training sessions against fellow big man Andrew Bogut. With NBA interest growing around Nevill he decided to return to college for his senior season, leading the Utes to the NCAA Tournament. At the conclusion of the season, he was named the Mountain West Conference Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year after averaging 16.8 points, 9.0 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 2.7 blocks per game. Nevill went undrafted and after participating in a training camp invitation from the Cleveland Cavaliers he became one of the first Australian's to go on to play in the NBA D-League, signing with the Utah Flash in 2009. He played 48 games, started 43 of them and averaged 11.9 points, 5.5 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 1.2 blocks per game. In 2010 Nevill returned to Australia, signing a deal with the Melbourne Tigers. It was a tumultuous season for the Tigers, after recruiting multiple big men (Cam Tragardh, Wade Helliwell and Matthew Burston had also signed deals that season) the team had an unbalanced roster and failed to make the playoffs. Nevill averaged 12 points, 7 rebounds and 1 block in only 25 minutes per game. The following year Nevill returned to Perth when the opportunity to play for his hometown Perth Wildcats came along. In the 2011–12 NBL season, Nevill averaged 10 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists and 1 block per game and helped the team reach the NBL Grand Final where they narrowly lost to the New Zealand Breakers. Nevill signed a pre-season deal with the Indiana Pacers in 2012. He narrowly missed out on making the team and then returned to the NBL, signing with the Townsville Crocodiles mid-season. Nevill played in Taiwan during the 2013–14 season before returning for his last NBL season with the Wollongong Hawks in 2014. It was a difficult season for Nevill who averaged the lowest numbers of his NBL career, 7 points, 6 rebounds per game in a team that finished dead last with a record of 6-22. Nevill would play the remainder of his career in Taiwan and Qatar before retiring in 2018. Adam Ballinger had a long career in the National Basketball League (NBL) playing with the Victorian Giants, Wollongong Hawks, Adelaide 36ers and Melbourne Tigers. During this time Adam was named to All NBL teams, had a number of finals appearances, and competed with some of the leagues all-time best players. Born in Bluffton Indiana, Adam came out to Australia in 2003 to test the waters after trying out in the NBA. There wasn't a lot of convincing needed for him to stick around and now 15 years later, he's completed a successful career in the league, started a family and calls Australia home. After retiring from the league in 2015, Adam took an unorthodox approach compared to many other sporting athletes and decided to immerse himself in his love of art. Adam has created a business from his art and has gained the attention from not only those who love his work, but the people who he recreates in illustration. You all know my love of basketball, so it's no surprise to know that I was instantly drawn to his caricature styled illustrations of some of the larger-than-life characters of 90s NBA basketball. Of course, Adam's art covers a whole range of sporting and pop culture icons, but living and breathing basketball as a kid, it was wild for me to see these players i worshipped being brought to life in cartoon form. Adam and I spoke about his new career in art, growing up in the US, pursuing the basketball dream, relocating to Australia and his decade plus career in the NBL. We also get into some nostalgic NBA talk - always fun! Be sure to check out Adam's art (prints, stickers, t-shirts & other types of apparel) via the links below. When it comes to basketball in Australia, few families are as respected and accomplished as the Gazes. First came Lindsay, who built an iconic resume that ultimately earned him a place in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, and then there was Andrew, a standout voted as one of the 50 greatest international players of all-time. On this February 9th edition of The BroadCast, Andrew Gaze shares stories with Sixers.com's Brian Seltzer about his connections to Brett Brown, and Ben Simmons' family. Gaze's ties to Brown date back to the late 1980s, when Gaze was a player for the Melbourne Tigers, and his father hired Brown to be an assistant for the club. During that same period, Gaze also became a teammate of Ben Simmons' father, Dave.

Three-time NBL Champion, four-time Australian Olympian and NBA player, Mark Bradtke. Mark talks about his entry into competitive basketball and we discuss his quick rise into Australia's basketball elite. We chat about his time at the Australian Institute of Sport and later, playing for the Adelaide 36ers, in Australia's NBL. We talk about Mark's decision to move interstate, to play for the Melbourne Tigers - joining forces with Andrew Gaze and Lanard Copeland - helping the team win its first NBL title, in 1993. Recently, the Tigers celebrated the 20th Anniversary of that victory and Mark talks about the reunion and special bond he shares with those players and personnel. We cover Mark's outstanding Olympic career, where he represented Australia on four occasions. Mark talks about his opportunities to attend NBA training camps, plus, his 1997 season on the Philadelphia 76ers roster. He is open and honest about his time in the NBA and offers wonderful insight into the trials and tribulations of the experience. In 1997, Mark returned home to Australia. We talk about the contrast of leaving a struggling NBA franchise, to resuming his career at home and winning a second NBL title, just months later. We look back at Mark's 2002 MVP season and he also offers his opinion on the current state of basketball in Australia, plus, his future ambitions within the sport. The conversation is scattered with references to the history of Australian basketball. Aside from his Tigers teammates, we talk about Shane Heal, Luc Longley, Andrew Vlahov and numerous other greats of Mark's era.
