Interview: Mal Norwood (rerelease 2019)  The Eva Air Sunshine Coast Marathon is back on Sunday, August 3rd with a brand-new single lap marathon, making for a faster and more scenic course. The full marathon is almost 80 per cent sold, so sign up today at sunshinecoastmarathon.com.au to secure your spot at the start line. Malcolm takes it back to the beginnings at schoolyard rivalries in Albury, starting at sprints and winning the 800m, and how his love of running helped channel his hyperactivity. The first half of this interview concludes with how he joined Nike in the early 80s through Raylene Boyle and heading to AIS under pressure, not knowing who Pat Clohessy was and setting the record for the longest suspension at the AIS. Brady's chat with Malcolm Norwood resumes starting from his suspension from the AIS leading to a 3rd place in the State 10k and then taking a break from the sport, then coming back to racing in Europe under the mentorship of Ron Clarke and dealing with emotions. Mal then talks about coming home and running the 3-day Otway Classic, recounting the process for picking the team, employing tactics and strategy and duelling Sean Quilty. With his career transitioning from track to road, Mal talks about running the London Marathon to supplement his Twin Cities performance to qualify for the Barcelona Olympics and the complicated selection process involved as well as an incident that happened just before the London Marathon before going into the lasting impact of the injury through the Tokyo Marathon, World Championships in Germany to his final marathon at Gold Coast and how his retirement came about. Malcolm closes with his post-professional career, stepping out and in with the world of running sharing some philosophies on training, the state of running and anecdotes about drug testing. A name like the Dream Team understandably comes with baggage. Who could make up a roster so great, the result can only be described as a dream? In the basketball world, guys like Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Scottie Pippen, John Stockton, Karl Malon-shall I go on?These men were recruited to represent the United States in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, the first year in which NBA players would be allowed to play as Olympians. No pressure. But as Michael Tolajian's new documentary WE BEAT THE DREAM TEAM showcases, pressure builds diamonds. Pressure, in this case, comes in the form of the Select Team, a group of collegiate players and future NBA superstars (Grant Hill, Bobby Hurley, Chris Webber, Penny Hardaway and more), tasked to stress-test the Dream Team before the Olympics. And it's on a fateful day during the first scrimmage between this practice squad and their Hall-of-Fame counterparts that the unthinkable happens: The Select Team wins.WE BEAT THE DREAM TEAM is part insider basketball, part history lesson, told 30+ years later with the same youthful exuberance by the gents who achieved what was considered impossible. The best teams internationally got whooped by the Dream Team to the tune of 30-40 point blowouts. These 19-to-21-year-old college students were the only ones who - ever - beat them. Talk about your underdog sports stories, am I right?WE BEAT THE DREAM TEAM premieres on Max February 17th.---Rate, review and subscribe to The Movies wherever you listen to podcasts!Follow The Movies on social media: linktr.ee/themovies_pod

Three-time GRAMMY winner and musical omnivore Bruce Hornsby chats about his wide-ranging career, from pop to bluegrass to jazz! PART ONE:Paul and Scott talk about their Instagram, a wild Genesis fact, and more. PART TWO:Our in-depth conversation with Bruce HornsbyABOUT BRUCE HORNSBY:Thirteen-time Grammy nominee and three-time winner Bruce Hornsby has built one of the most diverse, collaborative, and adventurous careers in contemporary music. In the early 1980s Bruce was writing songs, playing sessions as a musician, and touring as member of Ambrosia and, later, Sheena Easton's backing band. By the middle of the decade he'd formed the group Bruce Hornsby and the Range, signed a deal with RCA Records, and released his debut album, which spawned the hit singles “The Way It Is,” “Mandolin Rain,” and “Every Little Kiss.” As a result, Bruce and the band won the Grammy Award for Best New Artist in 1987. Their sophomore album, Scenes from the Southside, spawned the hit single “The Valley Road” and included Bruce's own version of “Jacob's Ladder,” a song he co-wrote that became a #1 hit for Huey Lewis. In addition to his own artist career, Bruce began collaborating extensively in that era, including producing Leon Russell, co-writing Don Henley's “The End of the Innocence,” playing piano on Bonnie Raitt's “I Can't Make You Love Me,” and appearing on albums by everyone from Bob Dylan to Stevie Nicks to Willie Nelson. In the late 1980s and early 1990s Bruce increasingly began incorporating elements of bluegrass and jazz into his music. He disbanded the Range to pursue other projects, including becoming a staple of the Grateful Dead's touring lineup. His debut solo album, Harbor Lights, was released in 1993, and he won another Grammy that year, for Best Pop Instrumental, for composing “Barcelona Mona” with Branford Marsalis for the Barcelona Olympics. He released two additional solo studio albums in the 1990s before forming a new band, The Noisemakers, which released four studio albums between 2002 and 2016. In that same period, he collaborated with bluegrass artist Ricky Skaggs to release one studio album and one live album, and with bassist Christian McBride and drummer Jack DeJohnette to release a jazz album called Camp Meeting. Bruce's 2014 album Solo Concerts showcased a sampling of his one-man performances. In 2019 Bruce returned to releasing studio albums as a solo artist with Absolute Zero, an album included collaborations with Blake Mills, Justin Vernon of Bon Iver, and others. Among Bruce's many collaborations includes a longstanding partnership scoring films for director Spike Lee. Earlier this year, Bruce released Deep Sea Vents, a water-themed collaborative album with the band yMusic that was released under the name Brhym.

We then discuss his professional career which included a Commonwealth title and 5 defences against quality fighters such as Shea Neary, Jon Thaxton and Paul Burke. He would go on to challenge for his first world title in Manchester back in 2002 against the rising star of British boxing, Ricky Hatton. He would be the first man to floor Hatton and push him all the way in a close decision defeat. Eamonn talks about bouncing back to achieve his dream when winning the WBU world title in Cardiff in 2003. Weeks later he would become the victim of an attack when he was beaten with baseball bats and would be left with horrific injuries and face over a year out of the ring. We also discuss the end of his boxing career, moving into coaching with John Breen and having great success during this time as a team. In recent years, there have been very dark times with the awful murder of his son, Eamonn Jr in 2015. His battles with addiction have also followed Eamonn throughout his life. Back in 2018 his book ‘The Lost Soul of Eamonn Magee' would become a huge success winning multiple awards. Eamonn talks about plans for a documentary and movie in the future. Hopefully there will be many more chapters to his story.

Following up last week's show about the lavish French Lick Springs Hotel, Hoosier History Live will focus on the southern Indiana town's other claim to national fame. French Lick, of course, is the hometown of the basketball superstar often called "Larry Legend". He also became known as "The Hick from French Lick". Larry Bird persevered through significant challenges in his youth (including an impoverished family and a tragedy) to become one of the greatest players in NBA history. Before that, he was a sensational player at Springs Valley High School, then reaped national fame at Indiana State University. After his playing career, he coached the Indiana Pacers, lifting the team to unprecedented success, then served in top management for the organization. His triumphs also include playing on America's Dream Team One in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics (the first time NBA players were permitted in the Olympic games), even though he was in excruciating pain. Our guide as we explore Larry Bird's life and career will be veteran sports journalist Mark Montieth, currently a sports columnist for the Indianapolis Business Journal. As the former Pacers beat reporter for the Indianapolis Star, Mark covered all three seasons the team was coached by Bird, who took them to their debut in the NBA Finals in 2000. Mark has a trove of podcast interviews with (and stories about) Indiana sports notables at markmontieth.com He has been a previous Hoosier History Live guest, including on a show in 2017 about the early years of the Pacers in connection with one of his books, Reborn: The Pacers and the Return of Pro Basketball to Indiana.

- What to look for in a rowing boat, how to assess wear and tear and what can (and cannot) be repaired. Holes flagged out Hairline cracks on riggers Speak to Boatbuilder 01:30 What to look for in a rowing boat? Right size for your body weight is the number one consideration. Then check our podcast last week on buying a new boat - the same issues apply. What is your budget? 03:00 Height of deck relative to the water surface will show you whether a boat is the correct size for you. At the extremes of the weight ranges you should check carefully whether it will fit you. 04:30 Find the serial number of the boat you are interested in. When did serial numbers start getting added to rowing boats? Serial Numbers Post 1992 Barcelona Olympics it became standard practice based on FISA (World Rowing) boat standards. Call the boat builder what was the build weight? Year built? What hull shape was it designed for. History of the boat - how many owners has it had? 08:30 What questions to ask the vendor. - Major repairs or structural damage - Is it heavy? Know how much a 1x weighs on minimum (14 kg). - Cracks or blemishes on a rigger e.g. hairline fractures - How much has it been rowed? 10:00 What comes with the boat? If this is your first boat purchase - rowing electronics, slings, oars to set you up. 11:00 What will make it the way you want it? Consider the wear and tear on parts Shoe size may be wrong but isn't a reason not to buy a boat. e.g. oarlocks, slides, seat wheels, shoes, canvasses made from canvas all can be replaced. 14:00 Red flags which you should be alert for - Hull pits and cracks - Boat skin condition - is it oxidised? - Gel coat condition - turn your head and look sideways down the hull. - Check the dents using a torch - if above the water line it's more cosmetic. But if it's below the water line it could be more serious and cause leaks. Always try the boat and use your instinct - does it feel nice to row? 17:00 What repairs has it had? Did it go back to the boatbuilder to be fixed? If it's painted over you cannot see the repair. Major repairs are a red flag. Any repair will add weight to the boat. Does this matter to you? 18:45 DIY Improvements to your boat Look at the V-splash saxboard behind the cockpit - wobble them with your hands and see how robust they are. Also stand next to the cockpit next to the shoulders/knees where the riggers attach - hold the sides of the boat and pull your hands towards each other. A broken shoulder lowers the value and needs repair For wing rigger boats - check for hairline cracks along the flange where the riggers mount. You might need a bow ball, the number slot, scull grips. 21:00 Respray the paint and your boat will look like new. Hull integrity is the key consideration. Marlene refurbished her own first single. Rigger holes - check they aren't flogged out and enlarged. This means there is play in the rigger - you will need to get these fixed. Over-tightened rigger bolts / nuts can add indentations to the shoulder and you can add a large penny washer to hold the rigger more securely. 22:30 Haggle on the price. Any purchase is a negotiation. Ask the vendor to suggest a price reduction if there are things you want fixed. And ask the boat builder what they think it could be worth (ballpark figure). Some boats hold their value well if taken care of. Ask the vendor to suggest the price first. Want easy live streams like this? Instant broadcasts to Facebook, YouTube, LinkedIn. [7:50] International SOS was interested in starting a risk management department and they saw that Franck had created a risk management department at Firmenich. Both companies are family-owned. International SOS saw enough commonalities to invite Franck to interview with the owners. [9:02] During the job interviews, Franck pitched to the owners the way he thought the risk management department should be structured and what it should be able to deliver. It was a fruitful conversation. The objective expanded through the job interview and he was hired. [10:29] Franck has seven people in his department, in Paris, London, Houston, and Singapore. International SOS has 14,000 employees in 94 countries. They handle risk internally and have a captive insurance agent. Franck describes the workings of the department. [12:01] International SOS is in the business of saving lives. Companies hire them to provide security for employees who may be traveling or involved in large events, including COVID-19 and the War in Ukraine. They are the world leader in this, purely dedicated to corporations and public organizations. They don't do personal lines. [13:11] Following risk management principles helps International SOS deliver the solutions they do to their clients. They are in countries where things are not simple. A lot of risks need to be managed there. [14:04] The main difference Franck sees today from 10 years ago is the permanent crisis mode. Risks are ongoing and are not mitigating, are not reducing, and they are just piling up. Geopolitical uncertainties, the climate change impact, people risks, the growth of diseases, and cyber attacks are all interconnected in a permacrisis. [15:16] We can't be managing crises all day long, so how do we manage risk so that what we call a permacrisis situation is managed in a more controllable manner? [15:35] RIMS plug time! A link is in the show notes. That's early morning in the U.S. I, Justin, will be hosting it. Register and attend! [17:22] Deaing with the interconnected crises of the world takes compartmentalization. Franck stresses the human element of how people cope with overwhelming crises. The biggest mistake is to try to ignore things. Be aware. Identify what you are facing. Then strategize about what you can do. For each risk there is a specific approach and plan. [18:10] It's about making sure the company remains agile enough to respond to any situation. It's about collectively having a people and culture of knowing how to respond to a situation. International SOS knows the foundational reflexes that they need to have to manage situations and to raise the right risks to the decisionmakers for prevention. [18:59] International SOS does periodic phishing campaigns to raise awareness of how very stupid things can be done by people with good intentions. Cybercrime is a constant battle. People need to be diligent and very aware of what's happening. We are investing in automation but people still need to use their brain. [20:16] International SOS handles crises for clients every day. Crisis agility is ingrained in the behaviors and people of International SOS. When they hire someone but the person doesn't stay with them, it's because the person can't cope with their crisis management attitude. It's part of the International SOS DNA. [21:00] Franck makes sure risk management interacts with all functions of the company, from digital, financial, supply chain, and delivery. Franck reports regularly to the three company owners in terms of risks and the risk financing aspects. He has a seat at the table. There's no lack of response. Franck needs to stay material to the conversation. [22:45] Franck does not lead the International SOS ISO-compliance efforts but when they do ERM, he makes sure that what needs to happen to improve their efficiencies and delivery is properly done. He's not in charge of internal audit or compliance. When they do enterprise risk mapping, he looks at what needs to happen, and how to fix it if it's not. [23:32] PARIMA is like RIMS for Asia Pacific. Franck moved to Singapore and looked for the risk management association to join. He didn't find one. He had been an officer in the French and Swiss associations and European federation. He met with peers in Asia who had tried before. With Franck's pedigree, they founded PARIMA and it took off. [24:32] PARIMA is headquartered out of Singapore. They have operation in a few countries. They capture all the risk and insurance managers of Asia-Pac from India to Japan. There are about 3,000 members in about 20 countries across the region. Like RIMS, they are starting to create local chapters. It has been a rewarding adventure. [25:22] After being Chairman and Founding Chariman of PARIMA for 10 years, Franck is stepping down. A new president has been elected, effective January 1, 2024. Franck takes this opportunity to accept the presidency of IFRIMA the International Federation of Risk Management Associations. RIMS and PARIMA and other societies are members. [25:51] Franck holds these positions pro bono, to give back to a profession that has been extremely rewarding to him. The breadth of the connections with experts and peers he gets from these organizations gives him the opportunity to learn a lot. It makes him a better risk manager to invest time into these organizations. [26:42] Franck explains how he divides his time between International SOS, IFRIMA, and his family. He doesn't sleep a lot. He makes it work because he really loves risk management and doesn't see it as a job. The most time-demanding part of his IFRIMA work is finding the right people to work with him. Franck publicly thanks his family. [28:14] About PARIMA and the RIMS-CRMP Exam Prep Workshop. There is a strong appetite in Asia for better education for risk professionals. They tried with an education partner in Asia to develop a curriculum and certification. The content was adapted to Asia but the vendor partner was incapable of sustaining the relationship with PARIMA. [29:00] PARIMA has six permanent staff after starting from scratch. Franck invested his money into it as the first money it had. They quickly found out that to continue to deliver education and certification to all members, they needed to partner with somebody who was already doing a good job. RIMS was a good fit with a structure and content in place. [29:50] RIMS generously opened the book for PARIMA and about 80% of the content worked for Asia. About 20% needed to be replaced with business cases for Asia. Now they will work with RIMS and help to develop the Asia content. Franck wants the members in Asia to get to a certification that makes sense in Asia and around the world. [30:35] It should not be an ego contest between the Europe version and the U.S. version of risk management certification. The 80% relevancy between the U.S. version and the needs of Asia is more than enough to give it a shot and provide to members something that makes sense to them. They are just starting the work for delivering the solution. [31:14] That solution will be co-delivered by RIMS Commission Chair Ward Ching. Franck is also interested in how far PARIMA can be involved in a review of the content to make it a proper international certification. As President of IFRIMA, Franck has no conflict of interest. He is happy RIMS and PARIMA can work together. [31:59] Looking at the universe of risks we are in, risk management associations have to collaborate together. There is so much to do. We can't waste time or money to compete or not to collaborate the way we should. That's Franck's motto for IFRIMA. Franck looks forward to working with Ward Ching in this collaboration. [33:41] Franck shares words to inspire new risk professionals. “You are not making a mistake; that's a wonderful career; that's a wonderful profession. And there is still a lot to do; a lot to create; a lot to invent. I think it can't be a better time to do this! When you look at all the things that can be done with data, for instance!” [33:59] “Don't be shy. Leave your office; work with your colleagues; do not hesitate. Do everything you can to train yourself to be material to the conversation with the C-suite and to be the right person to talk on the shop floor with people. Use intellectual curiosity, openness, and enter the meeting room even if you are not invited.” [34:30] Justin thanks Franck Baron for joining him on RIMScast and he looks forward to seeing Franck at future RIMS events and seeing what develops in the partnership between PARIMA and RIMS-CRMP and RIMS. Blog summary: “Role of creatine shuttle in colorectal cancer cells.” _____________________________________________ Since the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, creatine supplementation has increased in popularity and grown to widespread use among the mainstream public. Creatine is a naturally occurring compound, primarily stored in skeletal muscle and involved in energy production for high-intensity activities—enhancing performance and supporting muscle growth and strength. The process by which creatine is transported into the muscles and utilized for energy production is referred to as the creatine shuttle. While it is a useful mechanism for healthy muscles, the creatine shuttle has also been implicated in cancer. “The creatine shuttle is highlighted in cancer as a source of energy for cancer cells that display aggressive proliferation, and aberrant creatine kinase (CK) levels are known to be associated with many malignancies and mitotic control [7].” In a new study, researchers Mayu Kita, Rina Fujiwara-Tani, Shingo Kishi, Shiori Mori, Hitoshi Ohmori, Chie Nakashima, Kei Goto, Takamitsu Sasaki, Kiyomu Fujii, Isao Kawahara, Ujjal Kumar Bhawal, Yi Luo, and Hiroki Kuniyasu from Nara Medical University, Saveetha University and Nantong University hypothesized that the creatine shuttle is involved in energy metabolism and other adenosine triphosphate (ATP) supply in cancer cells. On May 19, 2023, their new research paper was published in Oncotarget's Volume 14, entitled, “Role of creatine shuttle in colorectal cancer cells.” Full blog - https://www.oncotarget.org/2023/05/25/can-the-creatine-shuttle-be-targeted-to-fight-colorectal-cancer/ DOI - https://doi.org/10.18632/oncotarget.28436 Correspondence to - Hiroki Kuniyasu - cooninh@zb4.so-net.ne.jp, and Rina Fujiwara-Tani - rina_fuji@naramed-u.ac.jp Sign up for free Altmetric alerts about this article - https://oncotarget.altmetric.com/details/email_updates?id=10.18632%2Foncotarget.28436 Subscribe for free publication alerts from Oncotarget - https://www.oncotarget.com/subscribe/ Keywords - creatine kinase B, mitochondrial creatine kinase, ATP metabolism, phosphorylation signal, stemness About Oncotarget Oncotarget is a primarily oncology-focused, peer-reviewed, open access journal. This week we hear from some of the international artists who've been taking part at this year's Edinburgh Festivals. It's the world's biggest arts festival, which is celebrating its 75th anniversary. Aboriginal Australian William Barton is an award winning composer, vocalist, multi-instrumentalist and one of the country's leading didgeridoo players. His music has been performed from the Beijing Olympics to Westminster Abbey in London and he tells Tina Daheley about the language of this ancient traditional instrument and how he blends it with European classical music. Scottish writer Uma Nada-Rajah's play Exodus is set against the backdrop of a UK Conservative party leadership contest. In Uma's all female version, we met a would be Prime Minister who's staging a photo opportunity under the white cliffs of Dover to launch her anti-immigration policy, when a body washes up. Uma Nada-Rajah told Kate Molleson about the inspiration behind her topical satire. In the 1994 Rwandan genocide, an estimated 800,000 ethnic Tutsis and moderate Hutus were killed by dominant Hutu forces in 100 days. For her piece, The Book of Life, Rwandan playwright and director Odile Gakire Katese, known as Kiki Katese, tells the story of that conflict through the letters of ordinary Rwandans. She tells us why she feels that the arts can help to bring reconciliation to the country. Circus Abyssinia is the first all Ethiopian Circus troupe. Created by two brothers, Bibi and Bichu, their latest show, called Tulu, is inspired by the Ethiopian runner Derartu Tulu. She won the 10,000 meters in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, the first black African woman to win Olympic gold. Bibi and Bichu spoke to The Cultural Frontline's Andrea Kidd and explained why they wanted to portray her story through circus skills. (Photo: An aerial silk performer from Circus Abyssinia. When the Soviet Union collapsed on December 26, 1991, the many individual republics hurried to create their new governments. One of these new nations was Lithuania, home to some of the greatest European basketball players of the time -- and the 1992 Olympics were fast approaching. Its government was so preoccupied with just trying to exist that it nearly was unable to register itself as an official basketball country with FIBA in time, but in a last-minute scramble, the Lithuanian basketball team secured their spot in those famous Barcelona Olympics. This is the underdog story of that 1992 team from somewhere in Eastern Europe that gave their tiny, brand-new nation its hope for a bright future. With the much awaited announcement that the 37th America's Cup will be held in the Spanish city of Barcelona, Shirley Robertson's Sailing Podcast this month features interviews with several of the Cup's key stakeholders, as they discuss the excitement behind this landmark decision. It's been just over a year since Emirates Team New Zealand successfully defended the Cup on home waters in Auckland, and following a rigorous and in depth selection process, Emirates Team New Zealand CEO Grant Dalton was excited to name the Spanish city as the winning venue in a tender process that included three other significantly attractive bids.Dalton kicks off the podcast with a discussion about the process itself, highlighting what it was about Barcelona's bid that saw them come out on top, before inevitably discussing the complicated decision to hold the Cup away from Auckland.  In the one hundred and seventy years of America's Cup history, a defence away from home waters is a significant rarity, in fact only once, in 2017 (Oracle Team USA defending in Bermuda) has this decision been made without geography being a determining factor (2007 and 2010 saw Swiss team Alinghi defend in Valencia due to lack of open ocean at home in Switzerland).  The decision has faced significant criticism at home in New Zealand but Dalton's chat with Robertson is very clear - without securing the financial security for the sailing team, a viable defence against such a strong group of Challengers is an impossibility...:"The team will always be the priority...in saying that though, we want an absolutely amazing event, we're the Defender, we have a responsibility to that, but the team will always be the priority, and so we can't take money out of the equation...and the original motive was to put the team in it's best financial position to be able to have a chance against amazingly strong teams coming at us, to three-peat." clarifies Dalton.Robertson discusses several aspects of the decision process with Dalton, as the pair discuss the responsibility of the Defender to continue the legacy of the world's oldest international sporting trophy.Robertson, who herself sailed the first of her four Olympic regattas for Team GB at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, talks to several other key stakeholders in the 37th America's Cup, including podcast regular Terry Hutchinson,  team principal of American Magic, the Challenger representing the original holder of the trophy, the New York Yacht Club.  Hutchinson and his American team are delighted with the venue announcement,  and he does not underestimate the significance of the Defender's decision...:"The Defenders have taken an aggressive decision...and as a competitor you can't overlook that, and so I'm excited by the opportunity, I also recognise all the teams are really really good, so we know how this game goes, we lived it to the nth degree in the last one so I'm excited by the opportunity in front of us."In the second part of this two part podcast Robertson talks to team principal of the official Challenger of Record, INEOS Britannia's Sir Ben Ainslie, before discussing the implications of the announcement with North Sails President Kenny Read.  Part 2 wraps up with a chat with Emirates Team New Zealand's COO Kevin Shoebridge, who discusses the implications of the announcement on the New Zealand sailing team, and the opportunities it brings.Support the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/sailingpodcast)
