Since March 2020, most of us have a deeper grasp of who is an “essential worker.” The Baltimore Museum of Industry is featuring a show about those who are indispensable to our young people: Baltimore City school food-service workers. Like Sheila Alston, who helped feed students for more than 30 years: “We are part of the learning process with the kids. Because a child cannot learn if they're hungry.” We learn more about the audio-visual exhibit from the B-M-I's director of interpretation Beth Maloney, and from photographer J.M. Giordano who created the black and white portraits: “These are people who do a fantastically important job, so I wanted to make them look like superheroes almost.” Links: Food for Thought, online at BMI, J.M. THE ARTS ARE IMPORTANT, FOR MANY REASONS. JOINING ME TODAY TO TALK ABOUT AN AMAZING ORGANIZATION IS BETH MALONEY- SHE IS THE DIRECTOR OF ARTS EDUCATION AT ACT ONE
Mary Beth's involvement with Muni began in 1971 when a coworker told her that Funny Girl was looking for a prompter. Mary Beth then made her stage debut the next year in the chorus of The Most Happy Fella. Over the years, Mary Beth has performed in a number of shows. She says her biggest role was playing Fanny Brice in the 1984 production of Funny Girl, thus going full circle. Mary Beth was appointed to the Board of Trustees a few years ago. It’s an election year and the U.S. is experiencing a seemingly more contentious political climate than usual. In this episode of 3Ps in a Pod, hosts Donnie and Angelia discuss how they handled election seasons and politics in their classrooms before welcoming Beth Maloney, 2014 Arizona Teacher of the Year, to talk more about civics and respectful discourse. Together, they discuss media literacy, differentiating opinion from fact, strategies for generating discussion, bias in the classroom, and communicating with parents. Maloney sites Common Sense Media for Educators as a helpful resource for elementary school teachers. She also introduces Donnie and Angelia to the Save the Pacific Northwest Tree Octopus campaign. Be sure to find more information about the Pacific Northwest Tree Octopus here. Click here to open up a reflection guide for this episode to help you plan your civics instruction. This week’s episode of 3Ps in a Pod puts conversations about classroom engagement into action with “PD in 30.” This special segment is exactly what it sounds like: a professional development session in 30 minutes or less. Feel free to listen with a group of other teachers or by yourself. In this episode, you’ll join Beth Maloney, NBCT, of Dysart Unified School District, and James King, of Glendale Union High School District, in discussion about the importance of engagement and activities you can apply immediately in your classroom. S02/E07: Located in a waterfront 1860s oyster cannery in the Baltimore Harbor, The Baltimore Museum of Industry is trying to inspire and engage their visitors around the concept of work by telling the stories of historical workers. But in order to better fulfill this mission, the museum has to be constantly re-evaluating themselves and their assumptions about work. In this episode, I talk to staffers Beth Maloney and Auni Gelles about how an experimental interactive and a new job description are pushing the museum beyond more traditional education and interpretation methods. This episode is sponsored by Grove History Consulting. Featured songs in this episode are by The Bumper Jacksons, off their new album, I Never Met a Stranger. If you’re in need of a professional pep talk, we’ve got a dose for you. This week, Donnie and Angelia talk to three experienced teachers to hear what fuels their passion and practice. Beth Maloney, Sara Wyffels, and Anthony Perez discuss their paths toward education and the importance of having an enduring, positive professional disposition. The trio tells us how to boost peer and personal morale, even on the worst (and best) days. When challenges occur, together, we have to address negativity, rather than ignore it. As teachers, we need to get past the place of stuckness and press on with positivity. Vulnerability and collaboration help create a safe space for collegial relationships. Attitude can spark like wildfire, so don’t be ashamed to show your uncontainable enthusiasm for teaching. Join the conversation on Twitter by using the hashtag #3PsinaPod for a chance to win the book that inspired this talk, HEART!: Fully Forming Your Professional Life as a Teacher and Leader, by Timothy Kanold. The first three listeners to engage will receive a copy for free!
