There is a growing awareness in psychiatry that not all psychiatric illness is psychiatric— some percentage of what presents in psychiatric settings is actually triggered by autoimmune responses to various pathogens and insults. In the late '90s a syndrome called PANDAS (pediatric autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorders associated with strep) came on the scene with cases of sudden onset OCD and tics that appeared in conjunction with strep infections. The theory behind PANDAS was that parts of the basal ganglia of the brain had exterior cell proteins which were very similar to those of the strep bacteria, and as the immune system began to attack the strep bacteria, it also began an autoimmune assault on parts of the midbrain, including the basal ganglia, thus producing a sudden onset of OCD or tics.In recent years PANDAS has evolved into a broader concept called PANS— pediatric acute onset neuropsychiatric syndrome— which includes a vast array of neurological and psychiatric symptoms and syndromes that can potentially be triggered by autoimmune reactions. It can be tricky to diagnose PANS….this is probably why it is still a somewhat controversial diagnosis in some arenas. We don't have a clear and consistent set of labs or biomarkers to positively determine PANS, and because the syndrome is so broad in how it can present, clinicians struggle to come up with a modal or average presentation that they can put in their pattern recognition systems. One feature that seems fairly classic for PANS is that the symptoms tend to increase during and/or right after a concomitant infectious illness, presumably because the immune system activation is reigniting the autoimmune attack on the central nervous system.Today's story features a mom, Kari, and her daughter, Zoe. Zoe had lots of illness and immune system issues as a young child, first fatigue and then GI symptoms, then profound mood instability, and then she eventually developed horrific treatment resistant anorexia which did not respond to the best treatments psychiatry had to offer.Support the show! https://www.buzzsprout.com/396871/support"I Love You, I Hate You, Are You My Mom?" “Sometimes you don't know what you had until it's gone—and then you realize it was community.” In this powerful Detroit is Different conversation, Johnny Cannon of Joe Louis Southern Kitchen takes us on a journey that weaves food, family, faith, and legacy into one rich Detroit story. Born and raised on the east side, five generations deep, Johnny reflects on roots stretching from Tuscaloosa and Greensboro to Black Bottom and Paradise Valley, reminding us that “food and culture go hand in hand.” From stumbling into the restaurant business as a dishwasher to building beloved spaces like New Center Eatery, Sweet Magnolias, and now stewarding the global legacy of Joe Louis, Johnny shares how Detroit grit and divine order shaped his path. He speaks candidly about meeting Joe Louis Jr. “over Brussels sprouts and a beer,” and realizing that preserving Joe Louis' story wasn't just business—it was cultural responsibility. Through memories of elders banging pots in the streets, seniors gathered around radios, and customers learning history from photos on the restaurant walls, this episode connects the past joy of Black celebration to the future of Black ownership, storytelling, and pride. This is an episode about how legacy lives on the plate, in the neighborhood, and in the choices we make to honor our people. Botswana is the Africa in our heads, the one we see in nature documentaries, and think of when we say the word. It is a vast and untempered land filled with one of the richest concentrations of wildlife on the continent. In a single game drive you could see up to 50 different species: elephant, lion, buffalo, leopard, hippos, baboons and more. But beyond the wildlife there is something else too. Africa is our home. They call her the ‘Mother', the place we all come from. And if that's true, then Botswana is her beating heart. Taking us there is safari guide and author Peter Allison, who has been guiding in Botswana and elsewhere in Africa for nearly 30 years. He'll tell us the story of his ultimate Botswana safari, traveling from Makgadikgadi Salt Pans to the Okavango Delta. It's an adventure filled with wildlife, wisdom and more than one of his crazy stories. Get ready for an adventure into the Africa of our dreams. Highlights include: Learning to track wild animals with the San Bushmen, one of the oldest continuously surviving cultures on Earth. Walking on the surreal landscapes of the largest salt pan in the world - three times bigger than Bolivia's Salar de Uyuni. Going on game drives in the Okavango Delta, a vast network of floodplains that draws one of the highest concentrations of wildlife in Africa. Finding out what it's like to be stalked by a lion in the pitch black of night with only a kerosene lantern for company. Discovering the story of Salvador the elephant, and one of the most magical wildlife experiences you can ever imagine. Hearing about the time a leopard walked into Peter's cabin, with him inside it. It's OK, he survived to tell the tale. FIND OUT MORE A lot of our episodes are about huge expeditions and epic adventures. This one is about something you can actually do. Why You Should Listen: In this episode, you will learn about the latest approaches to healing your body from mold toxicity, Lyme disease, and other complex, chronic health conditions. About My Guest: My guest for this episode is Dr. Neil Nathan. Neil Nathan, MD has been practicing medicine for over 50 years and has been Board Certified in Family Practice and Pain Management and is a Founding Diplomate of the American Board of Integrative Holistic Medicine and a Founding Diplomate of ISEAI. He has written several books, including "Healing is Possible: New Hope for Chronic Fatigue, Fibromyalgia, Persistent Pain, and Other Chronic Illnesses" and "On Hope and Healing: For Those Who Have Fallen Through the Medical Cracks." He has been working to bring an awareness that mold toxicity is a major contributing factor for patients with chronic illness and lectures internationally on this subject which led to the publication of his eBook, "Mold and Mycotoxins: Current Evaluation and Treatment, 2016" (now updated to 2022), and then to his best-selling book "Toxic: Heal Your Body from Mold Toxicity, Lyme Disease, Multiple Chemical Sensitivities and Chronic Environmental Illness." 2021 saw the publication of "Energetic Diagnosis," a discussion of the value of intuition and energetic devices as an aid to both diagnosis and treatment of medical illness. In 2024, his book "The Sensitive Patient's Healing Guide" was released with a focus on how to approach the treatment of sensitive patients. And most recently, in late 2025, the second edition of his book "Toxic" was released with several years of new information and insights on healing from complex chronic conditions. Dr. Nathan has been treating chronic complex medical illnesses for 30 years now, and Lyme disease for the past 20 years. As his practice has evolved, he finds himself increasingly treating the patients who have become so sensitive and toxic that they can no longer tolerate their usual treatments, and his major current interest is in finding unique ways of helping them to recover. In this episode of The Go-To Food Podcast—brought to you by Blinq (the UK POS rebels)—we sit down with fire-obsessed chef Lennox Hastie, the man behind Sydney's cult restaurant Firedoor and the pintxo-loving Gildas. From starring on Chef's Table to earning two Chef's Hats (Australia's Michelin-adjacent kudos), Lennox has built a career on cooking everything over live flame—no gas, no charcoal, just wood, nerve, and precision.Lennox takes us back to the Basque Country, where a chance overheard conversation in a bar sent him up a mountain to Asador Etxebarri—and straight into Victor Arguinzoniz's inferno. He shares how he went from three-Michelin-star kitchens to a tiny grill line where the ovens roasted your back and the fire seared your front, translating for Anthony Bourdain and learning that wood choice is as crucial as the cut. You'll hear why turbot belongs flat on the grill (not in a cage), how prawns can stop time, and why simplicity hits harder when the flames are perfectly tuned.Back in Australia, Lennox fought a four-year, site-by-site battle to open Firedoor the uncompromising way—100% wood-fired or nothing. He breaks down the nerdy magic of ironbark vs. oak, why the team builds log-cabin fires every morning, and how prep dances around rising and falling embers. Expect goosebump dishes and surprising ideas: live-marron split and kissed by heat, grilled lettuce that eats like a revelation, long-aged beef that hums with prosciutto-y depth, and flame-finished desserts that prove pastry belongs in the fire, too.We also detour through San Sebastián and Sydney's best bites—pintxos culture, tomato salads worth a pilgrimage, vermouth-forward Marianitos, and Lennox's go-to Korean and Japanese haunts. It's a story of obsession, patience, and learning to “slow dance” with fire—from mountain grills to a packed open kitchen where every lick of flame is on show. Plug in for craft, chaos, and crackling honesty—and leave hungry.---------Please leave us a great rating and a comment and share it with your friends - it really helps us grow as a show.If you're in the industry and are looking for the greatest POS system in the world than look no further -as Blinq are tearing up the rulebook—no long-term contracts, no hidden fees, and no per-device charges.Just £69 a month for unlimited devices and 24/7 UK-based support that's always there, in person when you need it.Built for hospitality, by hospitality, blinq is the fastest, easiest POS system on the market—so intuitive, anyone can use it. Camryn shares how a steadfast pediatrician, early referrals, and balancing clinical guidance with peer support helped her daughter reclaim everyday life—right down to summer swim league. She also opens up about protecting her child's privacy, supporting siblings, starting trauma therapy, and building margin for joy. This is a masterclass in parental advocacy, nervous-system care, and creating a trusted circle around your child. I'm Dr. Daniel Cameron, and today I'm addressing a question I often see in my practice: What are the risk factors for chronic Lyme disease?Chronic Lyme SymptomsSome patients do not fully recover from Lyme disease. They experience a broad range of symptoms, including ongoing fatigue, pain, sleep problems, neurologic changes, emotional strain, and disruption of daily life. These challenges can affect school, parenting, and work responsibilities.Common chronic Lyme manifestations include:Musculoskeletal: chronic arthritis, muscle pain, stiffness, and tendon inflammation.Neurologic and psychiatric: brain fog, memory issues, neuropathy, sensory changes, depression, irritability, mood swings, and PANS. Post-treatment Lyme disease syndrome (PTLDS) is often debated, but I view it as a potential ongoing infection rather than simply a syndrome.Cardiovascular/dysautonomia: POTS, Lyme carditis, arrhythmias, chest pain, and dizziness.Other manifestations: sensory overload (light, sound, heat, cold, or smell sensitivity), sometimes related to dysautonomic issues.Risk Factors for Chronic Lyme DiseaseWhile formal assessments are ongoing, in my practice I see several consistent contributors:Severe initial infection such as neurologic Lyme meningitis or carditis.Treatment delays, sometimes months or years.Early systemic involvement at onset—widespread fatigue, pain, neurological symptoms, or functional loss.Co-infections such as Babesia and other tick-borne pathogens.Reinfections and relapses, which can increase the likelihood of chronic complications.Key Takeaways for CliniciansScreen patients carefully for these risk factors.Monitor for co-infections, especially in high-risk or relapsing patients.Do not dismiss persistent symptoms, even if a formal diagnosis has not yet been established.Advice for PatientsSeek early treatment—timing matters. If symptoms persist, pursue a second opinion or find a physician experienced in managing chronic manifestations of Lyme disease.Watch for co-infections, especially Babesia, which may complicate recovery and even mimic other conditions (e.g., menopause).Advocate for comprehensive care for yourself and your family.Thank you for joining me. Please leave your questions and comments below—I read them all and respond where I can.

My husband and I moved to the PSF HQ over three years ago. Since then, I've placed third in adult no-gi worlds in 2023 and second in 2024. I have achieved my second championship at Pans under master one, once in 2019 and another in 2023. I would describe my grappling style as classic and very pressure-oriented. In this episode of the Root Cause Medicine Podcast, Dr. Kate Kresge sits down with functional immunology expert and educator Dr. Samuel Yanuck to explore one of the most overlooked systems in chronic illness: the immune system. With clarity and compassion, Dr. Yanuck breaks down how immune dysregulation can contribute to complex conditions like depression, neuropathy, migraines, chronic fatigue, and even cardiovascular disease. From brain inflammation and mast cell activation to Epstein-Barr virus and mold, Dr. Yanuck offers a new way of thinking about biology—where inflammation isn't just a symptom, but a system that can be measured, understood, and treated. You'll here them discuss: - Why immunology could be at the root of nearly every chronic illness - The immune pathways that connect depression, anxiety, brain fog, and fatigue - What PANS, PANDAS, and autoimmune encephalitis really are—and why they're often misdiagnosed - How gut, brain, and immune health form a feedback loop - The labs you should run if you suspect chronic immune dysfunction - A framework for evaluating chronic viral infections like EBV and CMV - Natural immune modulators: Chinese skullcap, astragalus, quercetin, sulforaphane, and more - Why personalized immune workups—not protocols—create results Guest Bio: Dr. Samuel Yanuck is a functional medicine clinician and expert educator in functional immunology. He is the creator of Cogence Immunology, a comprehensive online training program that has educated over 9,000 clinicians in over 60 countries.
