How would you design an exhibit — if an animal's life depended on it?What is the number one reason people come to the National Aquarium? When should you take ego out of design? What is a “machine for living”? Which is right: “know-feel-do” or “feel-know-do”? (Hint: might not be the first one.) Why would an aquarium visitor want to hear from the people who take care of the animals? What happens when you float an entire Chesapeake wetland on top of the ocean, in the middle of Baltimore Harbor? How have kitchens and exhibits had a similar evolution? Kramer Whitelaw works as a deckhand with McAllister Towing in the Baltimore Harbor. In March, Merchant Vessel Dali slammed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge, causing it to collapse and close marine traffic in one of the busiest ports in the country.Whitelaw, a former wrestler at George Mason University and McDonogh School in Maryland and a current assistant high school wrestling coach, was part of the clean up crew and talks about the experience from a work perspective, from a perspective of being a former wrestler and as that of a Baltimore native. Whitelaw is still actively involved in the sport as a coach, but given his role with the company, he's had to step back some, but still finds time to coach with former high school teammate Brynn Holmes at Gilman School and this week, is on the U20 Pan Am coaching staff for Team USA in Peru. Join America's Roundtable (https://americasrt.com/) radio co-hosts Natasha Srdoc and Joel Anand Samy with the Honorable Benjamin S. Carson, Sr. M.D., one of America's principled leaders and a great patriot. The program begins with the words — "the perilous fight" penned by Francis Scott Key in the midst of a most difficult and pivotal moment in our nation's history when twenty British ships bombarded Fort McHenry from the Baltimore Harbor. It was on the morning of September 14, 1814 that Francis Scott Key wrote about the ramparts, and the land of the free and the home of the brave which inspired a nation and became a rallying victory call. Our conversation highlights Dr. Ben Carson's new book "The Perilous Fight: Overcoming Our Culture's War on the American Family." “The perilous fight—those words arrest my attention whenever I place my right hand over my heart and face the flag at the playing of our national anthem. They are a reminder that America was born in a crucible of fire. Freedom was not given freely but had to be fought for and defended.” ~ Dr. Ben Carson Biography | Dr. Ben Carson In 1973, Ben Carson graduated from Yale University. He went on to receive his M.D. from the University of Michigan Medical School. At the age of 33, Dr. Carson became the chief of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital, making him the youngest major division director in the hospital's history. This would be among an extensive list of outstanding firsts for Dr. Carson. Dr. Carson's accomplishments have earned him a place in medical history. He performed the first and only successful separation of craniopagus (Siamese) twins joined at the back of the head in 1987. He also performed the first fully successful separation of type-2 vertical craniopagus twins in 1997 in South Africa. In his career, Dr. Carson became a professor of neurosurgery, oncology, plastic surgery, and pediatrics at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, and directed pediatric neurosurgery at the Johns Hopkins Children's Center for over 29 years. In 2016, Dr. Carson accepted the position of Secretary of Housing and Urban Development under the Trump administration. After completing his tenure as the 17th Secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development in 2021, Dr. Carson founded the American Cornerstone Institute. This organization is focused on fighting for the principles that have guided him through life and that make this country great: faith, liberty, community and life. Dr. Carson and his wife, Candy Carson, co-founded the Carson Scholars Fund, which recognizes young people of all backgrounds for exceptional academic and humanitarian accomplishments. The organization has awarded more than 11,000 scholarships and paid out more than $8.9 million in scholarships. The Carson Scholars Fund is currently operating in 50 states and the District of Columbia, and since its founding, has installed more than 270 Ben Carson Reading Rooms around the country. In 2021, Dr. Carson founded the American Cornerstone Institute (ACI), a conservative think tank centered around advancing policies that promote “faith, liberty, community, and life.” Dr. and Mrs. Carson reside in Florida. They are the proud parents of three sons and three daughters-in-law, and blessed grandparents of eight grandchildren. Update on the containership Dali in Baltimore It's been less than two months since the containership Dali lost control as was leaving Baltimore Harbor at night, hitting the Francis Scott Key Bridge and destroying it, causing the deaths of bridge workers, and closing this key US harbor to vessel traffic. Since then a unified command operation of skilled agencies and experts have been working to clear navigation channels so ships can resume calling on the port. This week they made huge progress and were able to move the ship out of the way and open the deep draft ship channel. We'll talk about what it took to get there.

This week, the Idiots are joined by Wayne Russell, of Open Mic Pain. 00:00 Welcome! 00:44 Harrison Butker 08:10 The Dali Crew 16:44 Puff Daddy 22:10 David Copperfield 25:13 Gordon Black 29:31 Steve Bannon —Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker said dumb things. He's obviously a dumb person. Why does that outrage people? “Oh no, a sexist and homophobic person spoke his mind!” Isn't it a good thing to know who the sexist, homophobic neanderthals are? Plus, as Jake rightly points out: he was speaking at a religious college. Everything Butker said is probably part of their backwards curriculum. —Hey, remember when that cargo ship knocked down a bridge in Baltimore? Nah, me neither. It was big news for a couple days, though, right? Well, here we are weeks and weeks later… and the crew has been sitting on the ship this entire time, trapped and bored in the Baltimore Harbor! Who knew? Not us, we've moved on to the next few sensationalistic stories. —Oh boy… Sean Puff Daddy P. Diddy Combs is a piece of garbage. That's all there is to it. I mean, we always knew he was a talentless hack who could cobble together unlistenable songs by sampling more talented artists, but whoa. He's also an abusive douche who should be in jail. (Prosecutors say he won't be charged, because of the statute of limitations. Yay.) But, that aside, knowing he's an abusive jerk who belongs in jail, why does Fox News think we should hear what celebrities think of the newly released Puff Daddy/P. Diddy Sean Combs video? Jake has ideas… —nathan is hung up on terminology here… The news wrote the phrase, “Celebrated magician David Copperfield.” Celebrated? Really? Well, Wayne and Jake think so, and they make a fairly compelling case for it: no basic rabbit-out-of-a-hat fella is getting invited to Jeffrey Epstein's island. —Staff Sergeant Gordon Black is an interesting fella. Stationed in South Korea, he met a Russian woman, and, being really smart, got into a relationship with her. No thoughts of espionage, no wondering whether or not this was a good idea… Even better, he apparently stayed with her after a physical altercation where she stabbed him. Welp, he's in jail in Russia, now. Who could have seen this coming? (Everyone. Everyone saw it coming.) —Trump vs. Biden is the rematch no one wanted. And I get it, nobody really wants to vote for Biden. It's literally, “But look at the alternative.” Well, now there's a real reason to vote Biden: let's get Steve Bannon put in jail, and left there. In honor of National Infertility Awareness Week beginning today, April 22, America's Work Force Union Podcast featured Dr. Janet Choi, a double-board certified reproductive endocrinologist, and Stacey Hofert, Vice President of Labor and Trust, from Progyny. They discussed what they are doing to help individuals in the trades receive better care across the fertility, family building and women's health continuum. They also talked about expanding benefits and closing the gaps in coverage that exist today. Secretary-Treasurer for the Marine Engineers' Beneficial Association (MEBA), Roland “Rex” Rexha, joined America's Work Force Union Podcast to give a seagoing engineers' perspective on the Francis Scott Key Bridge incident in the Baltimore Harbor and potential maritime reforms that could help protect workers and residents around ports.
In this intriguing episode, we delve into a serious situation of the shipping crisis that arose following the collapse of the Francis Scott Key bridge at the Baltimore Harbor. We discuss the probable interruption in the supply chain, potential looting at the ports, and the challenge of rebuilding the bridge. This is a comprehensive conversation on a crucial event with nationwide implications. Baltimore Harbor is a major shipping port in the U.S, and the unfortunate incident caused a significant disruption, halting all shipping movement. We dissect the repercussions of this event on supply chain dynamics, citing specific examples where merchandise could potentially be misplaced at different ports. We also touch upon potential incidents of theft due to the chaos at the port. The central aspect of the discussion navigates its way to the rebuilding of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, which collapsed in the incident. We consider how long it might take to erect a replacement, drawing parallels from previous rebuilding efforts across the country. The pressing need to resume shipping operations leaves the administration with a daunting task of clearing the harbor and setting plans in motion for a new bridge, and we explore the possibilities of how this might be achieved. Moving further, the episode also features concerns about rising costs of goods, the escalating prices at a gas station, and fair trade. As the discussion veers towards the fair price of goods and services, we shed light on instances of profiteering, raising pertinent questions about 'fairness.' We end the episode with a promise to keep you updated with developments about this compelling story of the Baltimore shipping crisis. We explore the possibility of whether this could be a turning point for the administration to prove its efficiency in crisis management and provide quick, effective solutions to major infrastructural challenges.

//The Wire Weekly Rollup//March 24-30, 2024//-----BEGIN TEARLINE------International Events-France: Authorities have increased the terror alert to its maximum level following the continual assessment of an increased likelihood of terrorism. Though authorities have not revealed any specific threat (beyond the violent attacks France experiences on a daily basis), the opening ceremonies for the Olympic games have been closed to tourists. Event officials are also considering closing the opening ceremonies altogether due to the security threats.Russia: Details continue to emerge following the Crocus City Hall music venue shooting last week. All four shooters have been arrested, along with a handful of other individuals accused of complicity in the attack. -HomeFront-Maryland: The Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore collapsed after the M/V DALI collided with a support pylon after an unknown mechanical issue caused the vessel to deviate from her course. Details regarding the specifics of the incident have largely not been made public due to the ongoing investigation. The M/V DALI remains impaled on the bridge debris, which has caused Baltimore Harbor to be cut off from the outside world, stranding four major Military Sealift Command (MSC) ships in the harbor for the foreseeable future. Initial estimates have indicated that the bridge will take approximately 10 years to rebuild, despite only taking 5 years to build originally in 1972.Texas: Outrage continues following the revelation of clauses within the latest trillion dollar omnibus spending bill, which have mandated the federal tracking of all beef cattle in the United States.New York: City officials have announced the implementation of metal detectors in the subway system. These detectors will augment the existing military checkpoints currently in place throughout the subway system, and will be installed over the next few weeks.-----END TEARLINE-----Analyst Comments: To the unknowing citizen, the excuse of ISIS-K being responsible for the Moscow attack may seem as plausible as any other theory. However, those who have field experience combatting ISIS-K may assess that the chance that ISIS-K was responsible for this attack is nearly zero. The following are a few indicators that suggest the official story, spread throughout western Europe, the United States, and even Russia, is a lie.At this point, most media outlets claim that ISIS-K has claimed responsibility for the attack. Russian President Vladimir Putin has also blamed “radical Islamists” for the attack, though not going so far as to name a specific group. The Khorasan-derived ISIS offshoot has largely declined over the past few years for many reasons. Whereas the traditional Islamic State organization has roots in Iraq and Syria, the Khorasan splinter group known as ISIS-K is a completely different organization in practice. Largely being confined to the far-reaches of eastern Afghanistan as well as the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) of Pakistan, as recently as 2019 ISIS-K was on its way out as an organization. Numbering only a few hundred members, and taking refuge in the Tora Bora mountains (of Bin Laden fame), ISIS-K had lost so much influence that even attacks in Jalalabad were very rare. Taliban forces were at war with ISIS-K deep in the mountains, and on many occasions the United States undertook operations to target ISIS-K with the assumption that the Taliban would then move in and occupy the terrain. This was quietly the de facto policy for many years. In fact, diplomatic relations soured at the 2019 peace negotiations in Doha in response to a few high-profile instances where conventional American forces killed a few relatives of senior Taliban leadership, rather than ISIS-K. As such, the ability for ISIS-K to conduct operations outside of Afghanistan is extremely remote, especially considering that the

//The Wire//1930Z March 29, 2024////ROUTINE////BLUF: BALTIMORE BRIDGE EFFECTS MOUNT. FRANCE CONTINUES ASSESSING TERROR THREATS.// -----BEGIN TEARLINE------International Events-France: Authorities continue to claim an elevated risk of terror attacks throughout the country. The opening ceremonies for the Olympic games have already been closed to tourists, after a man stole a bag from an event worker which contained security plans and details. Currently, France is considering closing the opening ceremonies altogether, due to security concerns.-HomeFront-New York: City officials have announced the implementation of metal detectors in the subway system. These detectors will augment the existing military checkpoints currently in place throughout the subway system, and will be installed over the next few weeks. These measures are in addition to the hundreds of soldiers that are currently deployed throughout the transportation network.Baltimore: The follow-on effects of the Key Bridge collapse continue to be felt as many vessels remain trapped in Baltimore Harbor. Aside from a few commercial tankers/cargo vessels, the largest ships currently trapped in the harbor are Military Sealift Command (MSC) vessels, to include the SS ANTARES and the SS DENEBOLA. Both vessels are Fast Sealift Ships, some of the fastest military cargo vessels in existence. Also trapped within the harbor are the M/V GARY I. GORDON (formerly the USNS GORDON) and the M/V CAPE WASHINGTON, both very large multirole RO/RO cargo vessels.-----END TEARLINE-----Admin Note: Though the Ready Reserve Force has been neglected in recent years, with many vessels being mothballed or otherwise deactivated, four of the largest MSC ships being out of action is a substantial impact to the United States' wartime logistical sealift capability. Though RRF ships are strategically positioned for just this situation, the loss of forces or the reduction of capabilities is worthy of note nonetheless.Analyst: S2A1//END REPORT//

Our guest on this week's episode is Crystal Parrott, chief operating officer at Plus One Robotics. Retailers have always had to deal with seasonal peak periods. However, those fluctuating volumes make it difficult on distribution operations. But now, there are technologies that make it easier to smooth out the peaks. Our guest shares how those technologies can bring huge benefits for retail distribution. The major story we've been covering this week has been the collapse of the Key Bridge in Baltimore Harbor when it was struck by a container ship leaving Maryland on its way to Sri Lanka. Investigators and rescue workers are still trying to figure out how that tragedy happened, and it could take years to ultimately rebuild the bridge, which carried traffic on I-695. In the meantime, the closure of the Port of Baltimore has forced supply chains managers to adapt. We look at how ships and trucks are being rerouted to other ports and roads and what overall effects this disaster may add to supply chain disruptions and complexity. We take a sneak peek at a story in the April issue of DC Velocity that looks at how drones are impacting middle-mile freight movement. There is a European company that is very close to making commercial delivery operations with larger drones a reality. Dronamics has developed a Cessna-sized aircraft called the Black Swan. It's a middle-mile drone that can deliver 770 pounds of cargo up to about 1,500 miles. Supply Chain Xchange also offers a podcast series called Supply Chain in the Fast Lane. The recent collapse of the Francis Scott Key bridge in Baltimore after being struck by a container ship is both a human tragedy and an economic disaster. Six construction workers doing repair work on the bridge lost their lives when it plunged into the cold Patapsco River. The wreckage of the bridge now sits in the channel that connects Baltimore Harbor to the Chesapeake Bay, effectively closing the Port of Baltimore. Joe Kane, a fellow in Brookings Metro, talks about the economic impacts of the disaster and prospects for rebuilding the bridge.
NO ACCIDENT! TERRORISM IN BALTIMORE HARBOR! HERE'S THE PROOF!
It's Wednesday, March 27th, A.D. 2024. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark 161 acts of persecution against Christians so far in 2024 During the first 75 days of 2024, the United Christian Forum documented 161 incidents of persecution against Christians in India. Christians in the Hindu-majority country often face accusations of forced conversion. The group noted Christians experienced the most persecution in the central Indian state of Chhattisgarh. It said, “There is clear evidence of state-sponsored harassment of Christians in this state, as the police file false allegations of conversion against pastors, even for praying in birthday parties and other social gatherings.” One billion people in India expected to vote Nearly a billion people will head to the polls in India next month. It's considered the largest democratic election in history. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to win a third term in a row. His Hindu-nationalist party, known as the Bharatiya Janata Party, is also expected to remain in power. India overtook China as the world's most populated country last year. India also overtook the U.K. as the fifth largest economy in 2022 and is on track to be the third largest behind the U.S. and China. Isaiah 40:15 reminds us, “Behold, the nations are as a drop in a bucket, and are counted as the small dust on the scales; Look, [the Lord] lifts up the isles as a very little thing.” Air & Space Museum in trouble for mocking pro-lifers In the United States, a national museum agreed to a $50,000 settlement with pro-life tourists. Twelve students visited the National Air and Space Museum last year, wearing pro-life apparel. Museum staff mocked the students and forced them to leave. Patrick Murphy, one of those pro-life students, appeared on Sean Hannity's Fox show and explained what happened. MURPHY: “We got done with the March for Life and we decided to go to the Air and Space Museum. We ended up but the Flight Brothers exhibit. At this time, we were addressed by security guards and they tell, ‘All people wearing a pro-life hat, take it off.' One of the students with us proceeds to say, ‘We use these hats for identification purposes. This is for our group.' “We were approached by a large man as we were walking out, rubbing his hands together, saying ‘Y'all are about to make my day!' He tells us he's got reports saying we said no to taking our hats off and we're in trouble for some odd reason. I then said, ‘This is a violation of our First Amendment right. This is a government-funded building.' He said, ‘It's a neutral zone, and that doesn't apply here.' And we were blown away. We had almost no words.” The Smithsonian oversees the museum and agreed to the settlement, offering the students a private tour. Jordan Sekulow with the American Center for Law and Justice wrote, “This was a clear-cut First Amendment violation, not only of their freedom of speech but of religion as well. The federal government simply cannot ban speech with which it or its employees disagree.” Kansas pro-life bill would end chemical abortion In welcome news, Students for Life Action applauded the roll call vote on Senate Bill 286 in the Kansas Senate, which, if signed into law, will greatly increase pro-life protections in Kansas, stopping dangerous Chemical Abortion pills and ending intentional abortion. This vote resulted from the hard work of Students for Life Action intern Cheyenne Vandeventer, who helped introduce the law in 2023, and was championed by Kansas GOP State Senator Dr. Mark Steffen. Ship crashed into Baltimore bridge, causing collapse A massive, Singapore-flagged container ship, named Dali, bound for Sri Lanka, crashed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge yesterday at 1:30am in Maryland, causing it to collapse. Watch the video. The ship was departing from Baltimore, Maryland when it lost power. The collision sent people and cars into the icy Patapsco River. First responders rescued two people from the river, but six more are unaccounted for and presumed dead. Maryland's Democratic Governor Wes Moore spoke to the press. MOORE: “This morning our state is in shock. To our first responders, I'm in awe of you. I'm in awe of your courage. I'm in awe of your strength. You saw a crisis and you said, ‘What can I do to help' to rescue and recover the victims of this collapse literally as we speak.” Ship traffic to the Baltimore Harbor is suspended for now. The port is the busiest one in the United States for car shipments. Maternal mortality rate did not skyrocket at all A new study in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology found the U.S. maternal mortality rate may have been overestimated. In 2003, death certificates started to include a box if someone was pregnant near the time of death. This led to the appearance of a 143% increase in maternal mortality rates over the last 21 years. However, researchers found the rate only increased by two percent in reality. LifeSiteNews noted, “Maternal mortality is frequently used as an excuse to expand legal abortion. … Across the globe, statistics have shown that legal abortion does not lower the maternal mortality rate.” Alabama defunded “woke” programs Last Wednesday, Alabama's Republican Governor Kay Ivey signed a bill to defund diversity, equity, and inclusion programs. The state will no longer fund such woke programs at schools, public colleges, and government agencies. The law put restrictions on “divisive concepts” like the idea that “any individual should accept, acknowledge, affirm, or assent to a sense of guilt, complicity, or a need to apologize on the basis of his or her race, color, religion, sex, ethnicity, or national origin.” Weekly U.S. church attendance down 12 points And finally, Gallup released a new poll on church attendance in America. Overall, 30% of Americans say they attend religious services weekly or almost weekly. Eleven percent attend once a month, and 56% seldom or never attend. Since 2000, weekly or almost weekly religious attendance is down 12 points for U.S. adults. It's down 12 points for Catholics and down four points for Protestants. Hebrews 10:24-25 says, “Let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another.” Close And that's The Worldview in 5 Minutes on this Wednesday, March 27th in the year of our Lord 2024. pWotD Episode 2520: Francis Scott Key Bridge (Baltimore) Welcome to popular Wiki of the Day where we read the summary of a popular Wikipedia page every day. With 1,446,189 views on Tuesday, 26 March 2024 our article of the day is Francis Scott Key Bridge (Baltimore). The Francis Scott Key Bridge was a steel arch continuous through truss bridge spanning the lower Patapsco River and outer Baltimore Harbor / Port carrying Maryland Route 695 (the Baltimore Beltway) between Hawkins Point, a neighborhood of Baltimore, and Dundalk in Maryland, United States. The main spans of the bridge were destroyed on March 26, 2024, when a container ship, the MV Dali, crashed into one of its support pillars. The crossing between Baltimore City and Baltimore County also passed through a small portion of Anne Arundel County. It was first known as the Outer Harbor Crossing until 1976, when it was renamed while still under construction. It has also been known as Key Bridge or Beltway Bridge. The main span of 1,200 feet (366 m) was the third longest span of any continuous truss in the world, and the total length was 8,636 feet (2,632 m) long. It was the second-longest bridge in the Baltimore metropolitan area, after the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. The bridge was opened on March 23, 1977, named for amateur poet Francis Scott Key (1779–1843), the author of the lyrics to the American national anthem, "The Star-Spangled Banner". The Key Bridge was a toll facility operated by the Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA). The bridge was the outermost of three toll crossings of Baltimore's Harbor, two tunnels and one bridge. The bridge carried an estimated 11.5 million vehicles annually. It was a designated hazardous materials truck route, as HAZMATs were prohibited in the Baltimore Harbor and Fort McHenry tunnels. Once completed, the bridge structure and its approaches became the final links in Interstate 695, the "Baltimore Beltway", completing a two-decade-long project. Despite being signed as part of I-695, the bridge was officially considered part of the state highway system and designated Maryland Route 695.This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 06:13 UTC on Wednesday, 27 March 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Francis Scott Key Bridge (Baltimore) on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm Salli Neural.

A few blocks away from Baltimore Harbor where many a sailor have made port and ships have launched for centuries, I walk into a tan and green-shingled building lined inside and out with tattoo memorabilia. Snarling panthers, rickety ships, pin-up girls: slices of Americana-style ink hang over century-old tattoo guns as their modern successors whizz permanent art into the skin of ready and willing canvases. Plus there's little banter and fun, free of charge. This is the Baltimore Tattoo Museum. It's been around for decades and outside of its civilian clientele, the shop has seen more than its fair share of service members and veterans looking to get permanently stamped with classic off the wall designs or custom-made ink. The shop is also home to a cast of characters, including its owner Chris Keaton, who have many stories to tell of the best and worst ideas that have walked through the door…and for those tales, well – I'll let you be the judge. Appearing in this episode: Kelsey Baker, Drew F. Lawrence, Zach Fryer-Biggs, Chris Keaton and the Baltimore Tattoo Museum tattoo artists.

Author and historian Tom McMillan joins Tim to talk about his book called, “Our Flag Was Still There – The Star Spangled Banner that Survived the British and 200 Years. And the Armistead Family who saved it.” Tom is the author of four books centered on stories related to 9/11 and Flight 93; two books about key figures in the Gettysburg battle during the Civil War; and now his latest book that tells the story behind the story of the most famous flag in American history. https://traffic.libsyn.com/forcedn/shapingopinion/Our_Flag_Was_Still_There_auphonic.mp3 If you're a regular listener to the Shaping Opinion podcast, you may remember an interview we did before with Tom McMillan. We had a great conversation with him in March of 2019. That was our 58th episode. If you're keeping track, this one is our 294th episode. In that earlier episode, Tom told us about five local boys from Gettysburg who came back to fight in an epic battle in their hometown. Today, we're going to talk with Tom about a different chapter in American history. The events surrounding the War of 1812, a famous battle at Fort McHenry in Baltimore Harbor, the story behind our National Anthem, and an American family that preserved one of the most sacred artifacts in our nation's history. One that now rests in the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C. But there's more to Tom than just history, and it's worth knowing that up front. Tom started his career as a sports writer. He then became a hockey executive until his retirement. But long before he retired, he started his transition into author and historian. How does something like that happen? About the Book Our Flag Was Still There details the improbable two-hundred-year journey of the original Star-Spangled Banner—from Fort McHenry in 1814, when Francis Scott Key first saw it, to the Smithsonian in 2023—and the enduring family who defended, kept, hid, and ultimately donated the most famous flag in American history. Francis Scott Key saw the original Star-Spangled Banner flying over Baltimore's Fort McHenry on September 14, 1814, following a twenty-five-hour bombardment by the British Navy, inspiring him to write the words to our national anthem. Torn and tattered over the years, reduced in size to appease souvenir-hunters, stuffed away in a New York City vault for the last two decades of the nineteenth century, the flag's mere existence after two hundred years is an improbable story of dedication, perseverance, patriotism, angst, inner-family squabbles, and, yes, more than a little luck. For this unlikely feat, we have the Armistead family to thank—led by Lieutenant Colonel George Armistead, commander of Fort McHenry, who took it home after the battle in clear defiance of U.S. Army regulations. It is only because of that quiet indiscretion that the flag survives to this day. Armistead's descendants kept and protected their family heirloom for ninety years. The flag's first photo was not taken until 1873, almost sixty years after Key saw it waving, and most Americans did not even know of its existence until Armistead's grandson loaned it to the Smithsonian in 1907. Tom McMillan tells a story as no one has before. Digging deep into the archives of Fort McHenry and the Smithsonian, accessing never-before-published letters and documents, and presenting rare photos from the private collections of Armistead descendants and other sources, McMillan follows the flag on an often-perilous journey through three centuries. Our Flag Was Still There provides new insight into an intriguing period of U.S. history, offering a “story behind the story” account of one of the country's most treasured relics. The Yankees putrid offense stinks up the Baltimore Harbor.
Right at the end of the outcropping where the Patuxent River meets the Baltimore Harbor sits a star-shaped fort that had been instrumental in the War of 1812, and which led to the writing of our national anthem. But Fort McHenry carries other stories, too, few more striking than its use for imprisoning prominent Southern-leaning citizens of Maryland during the Civil War, including members of the Maryland legislature and journalists. patreon.com/nationalparkspodcast

I saw today that the Dallas Mavericks have quit playing the National Anthem before games. It got me thinking: Taxpayers fund or help fund sports stadiums. Between 1990 and 2010, 84 new facilities were built for the 122 teams playing in the four largest professional sports leagues. The combined construction cost was $34 billion, with $20 billion coming from public funding. In fact, there are few policy topics on which economists agree more – only one out of 35 of the top economists polled by the University of Chicago Booth School of Business believes that the benefits of sports subsidies outweigh their costs to taxpayers. If we subsidize sports for the “public good” they better recognize the fact they should promote the public good. Getting rid of the National Anthem is a slap in the face. It's the one reminder who that stadium is supposed to be for, the public. Let's just examine what offends the Mavericks so much: "The Star-Spangled Banner" is the national anthem of the United States. The lyrics come from the "Defence of Fort M'Henry", a poem written on September 14, 1814, by 35-year-old lawyer and amateur poet Francis Scott Key after witnessing the bombardment of Fort McHenry by British ships of the Royal Navy in Baltimore Harbor during the Battle of Baltimore in the War of 1812. Key was inspired by the large U.S. flag, with 15 stars and 15 stripes, known as the Star-Spangled Banner, flying triumphantly above the fort during the U.S. victory. Verse 1 of 4 actual verses: O say can you see, by the dawn's early light, What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming, Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight, O'er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming? And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there; O say does that star-spangled banner yet wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

DOOM COOKIE PART 1 WINTER WINTERTIME The bold and ragged beauty of a winter tree Struck Susan as quite odd as she looked to see A table full of papers but none up to date No chance to glimpse beauty when you're running late A far off police siren pierces through the air But Billy doesn't notice and he doesn't care Sirens don't man nothing in the county jail Doing time's the fine when you can't make the bail In wintertime the sun don't shine The ice it shines the world's unkind An accident just happened out on National Pike Some lady ran a red light sliding through the ice Valentine's Day candy scattered on the street Now my car is totaled and it's raining sleet The windows creak and moan as the wind bears down Whipping through a tree branch lying on the ground The screen door whistles loudly and the yard is froze And me I write a song and I can't feel my toes TIME FOR A CHANGE If you remember me you see Think of the blood pumping through If I remember you playing your kazoo Please remember me If I were you and you were me Then just what would you see When feeling kind of rough Looking pretty gruff Be remembering It's time for a change Look around that person Find out what is certain Choose the other curtain Yeah but it might bring the worst in Right now I feel like shit and that's it Right now nobody's here And then I think of you wondering what you'd do If you see me too clear It's time for a change WHEN CHRISTMAS COMES AGAIN Christmas means togetherness and love and joy Happiness and presents for the girls and boys Old folk come together and then reminisce Stand beneath the mistletoe and get a kiss Love your friends and kin When Christmas comes again Shout out to the homeless in America The starving out in Asia and in Africa Embrace all of the faiths that would love to kill me The majority of folk through time just weren't free Go remember them When Christmas comes again Make sure that you bring your love at Christmas time People come and go but love is all the time People they pass on but their love still exists So let that love inside your hearts and reminisce Love brings love, my friend When Christmas comes again IT'S HARD Wake up Monday morning and I look around I felt bad this morning and my hair fell to the ground She came by on Wednesday with a wedding ring I ducked out on Thursday, baby, and hocked my wedding ring It's hard So I The Star-Spangled Banner" is the national anthem of the United States. The lyrics come from the "Defense of Fort McHenry". The poem was written on September 14, 1814, by a 35-year-old lawyer and amateur poet, Francis Scott Key. After witnessing, the bombardment of Fort McHenry by British ships of the Royal Navy in Baltimore Harbor, during the Battle of Baltimore in the War of 1812. Key was inspired by the large U.S. flag, with 15 stars and 15 stripes, known as the Star-Spangled Banner, flying triumphantly above the fort during the U.S. victory. The poem was set to the tune of a popular British song written by John Stafford Smith and became a well-known U.S. patriotic song. It is known for being very difficult to sing. Often only the first verse is sung Oh, say can you see by the dawn's early light What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming? Whose broad stripes and bright stars thru the perilous fight, O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming? And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there. Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave? On the shore, dimly seen through the mists of the deep, Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes, What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep, As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses? Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam, In full glory reflected now shines in the stream: ‘Tis the star-spangled banner! Oh long may it wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave! And where is that band who so vauntingly swore That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion, A home and a country should leave us no more! Their blood has washed out their foul footsteps' pollution. No refuge could save the hireling and slave From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave: And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave! Oh! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand Between their loved home and the war's desolation! Blest with victory and peace, may the heav'n rescued land Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation. Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just, And this be our motto: “In God is our trust.” And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave! --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/uirapuru/message

S02/E07: Located in a waterfront 1860s oyster cannery in the Baltimore Harbor, The Baltimore Museum of Industry is trying to inspire and engage their visitors around the concept of work by telling the stories of historical workers. But in order to better fulfill this mission, the museum has to be constantly re-evaluating themselves and their assumptions about work. In this episode, I talk to staffers Beth Maloney and Auni Gelles about how an experimental interactive and a new job description are pushing the museum beyond more traditional education and interpretation methods. On July 2 at noon, Marc Leepson delivered a Banner Lecture entitled “What So Proudly We Hailed: Francis Scott Key, A Life.” Just about every American knows the name Francis Scott Key, but very few know anything more about him other than the fact that he wrote “The Star-Spangled Banner.” But there was much more to Francis Scott Key. One of the most famous, admired, and accomplished men in the early American Republic, Key was a patriotic, pious, hard-working, and well-connected Washington, D.C., lawyer. He had a thriving private legal practice; argued more than a hundred cases before the Supreme Court; and served as U.S. attorney in Washington for eight years. A confidant of President Andrew Jackson, Key was a member of Old Hickory’s kitchen cabinet and handled many sensitive legal matters for the Jackson Administration. Marc Leepson’s new biography, What So Proudly We Hailed, describes in detail how Key found himself in Baltimore Harbor on the night of September 13, 1814. It goes on to recount the other important events of his life, including his role as a founding member and one of the leaders of the American Colonization Society. Marc Leepson, historian and former staff writer for Congressional Quarterly in Washington, is the author of eight books, including Saving Monticello, Lafayette: Idealist General, and What So Proudly We Hailed: Francis Scott Key, A Life.

In the first full-length biography of Francis Scott Key in more than 75 years, Leepson explores the life and legacy of Key and reveals unexplored details of the life of this American patriot: how the young Washington lawyer found himself in Baltimore Harbor on the night of September 13-14, 1814; how the poem he wrote morphed into the National Anthem; and his role as a confidant of President Andrew Jackson.Former staff writer for Congressional Quarterly, Marc Leepson is the author of eight books, including Lafayette, Desperate Engagement, Saving Monticello, and Flag.
