Dive into Episode #140 of the Psych Health and Safety USA Podcast, featuring host Dr. I. David Daniels, PhD, CSD, VPS, and special guest Stephanie Williams, a Chief Diversity Executive at a higher and continuing education institution. Ms. Willams is charged with advising executive leadership on diversity, equity, and inclusion-related strategies to address a more diverse community of staff, faculty, and students. College campuses have become more diverse over time. Recent data shows a significant increase in the enrollment of students from various racial and ethnic backgrounds. For instance, the share of white students has decreased from 66.8% in 2011 to 55.5% in 2022. Hispanic student enrollment increased from 11.2% to 18.5% during the same period, and Asian student enrollment grew from 7.3% to 9.7%. These changes reflect broader demographic shifts in the U.S. population and highlight the importance of diversity initiatives on campuses nationwide. However, it's important to note that simply having a diverse student body isn't enough; fostering meaningful interactions across different social groups is also crucial for reaping the benefits of diversity.

In this episode, I explore how architectural thinking enhances strategic decision-making with Adam Griff. Our conversation reveals how his architectural background shapes his approach to helping higher education institutions navigate complex decisions and create flexible space solutions. We dig into the challenges of designing spaces that can adapt to unknown futures and discuss how universities can better integrate with their communities.  I particularly love how Adam frames flexibility in building design as creating platforms for future adaptations rather than just multi-purpose spaces. We also explore the tension between academic and organizational decision-making and how to create and decide while delivering innovation in higher education. Questions This Episode Helps You Answer How does thinking like an architect help organizations make better strategic decisions? What makes flexibility essential in both physical spaces and organizational processes, and how can we intentionally design for it from the beginning? How can we think about buildings as adaptable platforms that support evolving human needs rather than fixed structures with predetermined uses? How might universities and colleges create meaningful connections between campus development and community growth that benefit both? Astrea Academy Trust embarked on the Brain-SET project looking at classroom design through the lens of children's brain development. This year-long project focused on enabling children to feel emotionally secure and ready for learning, by looking at classroom design in terms of lighting, noise, the use of colour, furniture layout and more. The overall aim was to really bring calm into children's lives, which is particularly important for areas of disadvantage which Astrea Academy Trust schools work within.  In this second episode of the project series Dr Sue Allingham (Early Childhood Consultant, Author and Trainer) and Nicky Turner (National Lead for EY for Astrea Academy Trust) share with us the way the project is running, the training carried out and the reflections and impact so far. Having access to outdoor spaces at school is great for play at break and lunchtimes, but it also opens up a whole host of curriculum-linked learning possibilities that extend beyond PE lessons. A new study by researchers at the University of South Australia has found that primary schools may not be making the most of the outdoor areas they have when it comes to curriculum delivery. The study acknowledges that schools and teachers are juggling multiple priorities, with possible barriers including a crowded curriculum and a lack of teacher training or confidence in this area. The authors recognised the need for patient, systematic engagement with staff across healthcare institutions, and take us through their journeys in three separate ISS programs. They call their implementation approach ‘longitudinal prebriefing'. Murray Hudson and former teacher Bhavini Pandya will take you through one of the most important new research studies into the relationship between pedagogy and space. They will reveal how a detailed three-year study was put into place in a working school, with unique access to the pupil's test scores. The results show that optimizing the learning environment leads to better educational outcomes. QED. Murray Hudson is the co-author of Planning Learning Spaces; A practical guide for architects, designers and school leaders. The book demonstrates cutting-edge approaches to educational space design, from primary to college studies, and explains how these spaces support education and enhance learning experiences. Murray is also Managing Director of Gratnells Ltd, the leading manufacturer of school storage and space optimization. Murray travels extensively, visiting schools across the world to better understand how to create the optimal learning environment. Murray has worked in the education industry for more than twenty years and is a member EdMarket USA Equipment Manufacturers Council. He lives in Cambridge, UK and can be spotted on his bike at weekends. Bhavini Pandya is a former primary school teacher and leads the Planning Learning Spaces in Practice team. I recently had the pleasure of sitting down with Elle Charisse, the host of Speaking Tongues Podcast. Elle is a change maker in the language learning community as someone who notices issues like gaps in representation, conversations being ignored, communities being overlooked, and she does something about it, letting her curiosity of the world and of humanity guide her to creating a space for all languages, all cultures, all histories, and all voices to be heard. In our interview, Elle shares a bit about how she grew an interest in languages growing up in New York City, living close to but separated from other cultural communities in NYC, and starting to notice some variation in languages spoken around her and wanting to just have conversations with speakers of those languages, which led to the creation of her podcast. Elle discusses how she connects with such a wide variety of multilinguals on her show and her vision for her platform and how it's evolved because of the stories other people share with her about their languages and cultures. Her mission to add to language discussions and hold space for the speakers of indigenous, African, west and south Asian, Polynesian languages, and so many other language families – languages that many of us have never even heard of – to hold space for speakers of those languages to share their stories, cultures, and languages – is one of the most powerful pursuits in the language community. Elle and I touch on a range of deep, thought-provoking topics seldom discussed in the largest of language learning spaces, from representative language in course material to the issue of homogenous speaker panels at language conferences to the need for inclusion of all multilinguals from all walks of life. And, of course, we chat a bit about food because, well, you can't talk about language and culture without talking about food. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did, but more importantly, I hope it broadens your view of language learning and what that can mean for so many people around the world, and I hope this conversation leaves you with an insatiable curiosity to know more. So many schools are spending millions of dollars to reconfigure learning environments to be more fit for the '21st century' and project-based learning. But when the spaces are finally built, they don't have the effect on teaching and learning that they desired.  Why? Because the LEARNERS weren't involved in designing them.  But what if they were? And what if it was their first project?  In this episode, I sat down with Natural Pod CEO Bridegitte Alomes and CSO Michelle Carpenter to discuss their process for designing learning environments which include ALL stakeholders. Learn more about this process and how including learners in proposal writing, presentations, prototypes, and 3-D renderings for learning spaces informed the build for one of the most innovative campuses in the country!  Learn more and connect with Natural Pod: Instagram/Twitter (@naturalpod), LinkedIn (https://www.linkedin.com/company/2749692/), Website (www.naturalpod.com)  Bridgitte Alomes Bio: Bridgitte Alomes, Founder and CEO of Natural Pod, is a thought leader dedicated to creating better learning environments through the use of beautifully designed, high quality education furniture made from healthy, sustainable materials, with an emphasis on environmental awareness and stewardship. We talk a lot about accessibility and inclusion in higher ed, but often the focus is on traditional students and in-person learning. What actions are we taking to make online learning spaces a  place where adult students feel safe to share and learn? Recent graduate of the Communication Management program, Joshua David Murphy Esqueda, who identifies as LBGTQIAS2+, discusses how their experience in the program highlighted ways online courses can allow for better representation and inclusion. Joshua and I also discuss modifications that can be made to online course delivery and the impacts of those modifications would have on all students - not just those from underrepresented identities.
