Keith Reza and Alan Lee interview comedian/booker Bill Word
FROM THE PSYCHIATRIC WARD TO THE SALESROOMToday's episode features the story of Bill Lee, a story of just leaving his psychiatric profession because the pay was so low led him to a highly successful sales career. Bill is a Business Consultant at Lee Resources and the author of Gross Margin and 30 Ways Managers Shoot Themselves In The Foot. Tune in today and learn from Bill why building solid and lasting relationships with clients are better than just being competitive with price, and so much more in this latest episode of Noob School. WISDOM FOR THE NOOBSBILL: Stay in your industry to build solid and lasting relationships“In my old industry, virtually everyone stayed in the industry, and the reason is if there's one key to sales that are not doesn't have anything to do with training, necessarily, it's relationships, who trust you, who knows you, who believes in you, who knows you that you have great integrity, that that's the kind of person you want to do business with. And no matter which company they work for. You tend to do business well.”BILL: Word of the day - Integrity“Integrity is something that I think everyone respects, everybody wants more of it, and it's the watchword for me, I do my best to have integrity and for people to never be able to talk about me behind my back and say that you can't believe a word he says, but tell the truth, whether it sounds good or not.” You can find out more about Bill and get his books in the links below:LinkedIn | Website | Amazon Connect with Noob School and John by visiting the following links:LinkedIn | Facebook | Instagram | Twitter | TikTok | Website

Back at the beginning of March 2020, just before the world ended, Louise caught up with the legendary Lynn Ruth Miller, while she was in Glasgow to perform at The Stand Comedy Club. Louise and Lynn chatted for nearly three hours, but we've managed to get the episode down to a manageable 45 minutes, with the promise to meet again for Part 2. Lynn has achieved more in her fascinating life than most people do in three or four lifetimes, so we could probably do a whole series of podcasts with this iconic lady. So buckle up comrades, because this one is really special. ABOUT LYNN RUTH MILLER Lynn Ruth is the oldest currently performing stand-up female comedian on both sides of the Atlantic. Dubbed the new Joan Rivers of Fringe Comedy at The Edinburgh International Fringe, Lynn Ruth started comedy & cabaret at 70. www.ocstandup.com Bill Word is Orange County's #1 stand-up comedy instructor. If you've always wanted to try stand-up comedy but hesitant to take the leap, this class is for you! For over 25 years Bill has been guiding his students to success during his informative and fun workshops! Bill's workshop has a creative and supportive environment, making it enjoyable for students to learn, explore ideas and find their voice. In the process, students come away with a network of comedy pals through the workshop experience. "My goal is to be the teacher I would have wanted when I was learning to do stand-up." - Bill Word Bill Word has been doing standup comedy since 1991. Bill has been featured on “ABC’s America’s Funniest People.” You have seen him on NBC, TLC and PBS. Bill was a panelist in the Las Vegas Comedy Festival. He has been featured on National Lampoon Comedy Radio numerous times. He is the executive producer and creator of Orange County's Funniest Person Contest™, Ultimate Laff-Down Comedy Competition™ and California’s Funniest Female Contest™. From the "Learn From My Mistakes" page on his website: SORRY LONG STORY BUT HAPPY ENDING. Late January 2016, I woke up around 5 am with the worst pain in my upper back. I couldn't go back to sleep. I tried ice and ibuprofen. Nothing worked. The pain was getting unbearable. I called 9-1-1. When I was with the paramedics and in the ER, I was screaming in pain, “Please help me!!!” They couldn’t give me any painkillers because they didn’t know what was wrong with me yet. My blood pressure was over 200/100!!! After x-rays and CT scan, a doctor told me that I had a tear in my aorta. I didn’t know what an aorta was, but it sounded serious. IT WAS!!! I was transferred to another hospital that could handle my condition. Couple days later they found two more aortic tears now three in total. I was getting worse. I was bleeding internally which if not fixed would kill me. I still remember the surgeon standing over my bed telling me that I needed surgery and that my family needed to get to the hospital ASAP. I thought, “Why? So, I could say goodbye to them? Get my affairs in order?” The surgeon told me that there was a 30% chance that I lose my left arm and 10% chance lose my legs because where the tears were in my aorta. Unfortunately, they had given me blood thinners to lower my BP. They couldn’t do the surgery on blood thinners because my blood wouldn’t clot. Now a balancing act, between needing surgery now and waiting for the “thinners” to get through my system. The first surgery was stopped because there was blood in my spinal fluid which could cause paralysis. I had to wait another 12 to 24 hours for surgery. Hopefully the “thinners” would be out of my system by then and I wouldn’t die before they could do surgery. The wait was scary but helped by the great love and support from my friends and family. I had over 300 posts on my Facebook page praying for me and wishing me well. The second surgery was successful. I now had extra hardware in me. Five stents in my aorta. Still had my left arm and legs. Three months later, I had a third surgery. This time I had an allergic reaction to the “dye” used to see the tears. I woke up from surgery with my arms tied to the bed and a tube down my throat. Not a pleasant experience to have the tube removed. Later the surgeon would tell me that he was afraid that he had lost me because of the allergic reaction. Now three years later, I have lost 35 lbs. since my surgery. Walk 5 to 10 miles a day. Eat a lot better. THE MORAL OF THE STORY?!?! I nearly died because didn’t take care of my health. More specifically control my hypertension (High Blood Pressure). I used to brag that I hadn’t been to the doctor in years. Realize now that wasn’t a good thing to brag about. Hypertension is called the silent killer. You only know something is wrong when something bad happens like a stroke, heart attack, tears in your aorta… Check your Blood Pressure recently? If it’s over 120/80 then act. It’s February 19, aka Evan’s birthday, so he brings on a Facebook friend who is another 2/19 birthday boy: Comedian BILL WORD! Bill and Evan recall the comedy contests Bill used to produce and Bill reminisces about the time he was introduced onstage… while still in the bathroom. They then talk other people with their birthday as well […] The post A Bill Word (& Evan) Birthday – Ep031 appeared first on Evan Wecksell.
"The Big Announement Show" We opened the show with "C-Ville Replay" by Sauce a.k.a. Mattisse from his album "Tisse", then unveiled a big secret that Executive Intern Pete was hiding from us all. We talked about the recent attack in France and the Syrian refugees, then about Charlie Sheen having HIV. We interviewed Joey B. from A Set Of Works, Writer and Stand Up Comedian Greg Harty, Musician Kris Hitchcock, Comedian Bill Word, Writer, Comedian, and Podcaster Marc Hershon, and Voice Actor Scott Lambright Smith. It was one hell of a show! #SlamborghiniBurlington 2016
As the talent booker for A&E's Evening At The Improv, working with folks like Jerry Seinfeld and Jay Leno, and as Bud Friedman's talent booker at the L.A. Improv, Dave Schwensen has some insights for stand up comedy careers. I read two of Dave's books when I was starting with stand up comedy in 2006. Then I took a stand up career class put on by Bill Word in Orange County, CA and taught by Dave.
Bill Word is a fixture in Orange County, California comedy, probably the best known name in stand up comedy contests out in California and has had some success on YouTube as well. He has some great perspectives on how a stand up comedy develops, why comedy competitions are good for your development, and how different venues are for different comedians. Read the notes for this interview here (opens new window). Full episode: Watch an 11 minute preview of the full interview:
Comic mentor Bill Word puts on a contest once a year called OC's Funniest Person Contest. I interview my friend Bill Howie backstage before and after we do our sets. I was also able to briefly talk to some of the other comics like Mark Schumacher, Vince Harper, Kip Hart and if you listen carefully you might pick up the voice of Barry Weisenberg and Cindy Burns.
Eric Escobar, an active comic from LA traveled down to Bill Word's room to do a set and then have a discussion about comedy, auditioning for the big LA rooms, and throwing yourself into the grind of the LA comedy scene. It was neat to hear what it's like in LA for an aspiring comedian.
The exceptional comic, Lee Levine, made his way into Duke's World for a great talk about comedy. We did this interview by the pool at the Irvine suites hotel which is where Bill Word hosts an open mic every tuesday. My producer Evan Cassidy sat in on the beginning of the interview but then had to go do another show. Oct. 23rd, Tuesday, 2012 Evan Cassidy is producing his first night at the Brea Improv!!!!!!!!!
I interview Mark Gentile backstage at the Encore Theater in Tustin, CA during the OC's Funniest Person Contest. Our interview was interupted by other comedians including Michael Driggs, Nancy Blum, Drew Mercury, Cate Gary, and the competitions host Julie Kidd. Bill Word was too stressed out to talk to us.
Bill Word joins me in the yoga room slash talk show room slash Carters room for a talk about his journey, comedy, and death. The death part is particularly funny!
