In Episode 148 of Noob School, I talk with Kevin Farrell — a retired U.S. Army Colonel and now the President and CEO of Battlefield Leadership. Kevin's career has spanned the military, academia, consulting, and even Hollywood, where he served as the senior military advisor on the Brad Pitt film Fury. But through all of it, one theme has stayed constant: leadership matters, especially under pressure. We talk about how his experience leading troops in combat shaped his understanding of leadership — and why those lessons still apply to business leaders today. Kevin shares stories from his work helping companies grow stronger through historical case studies and dives into some of the most common leadership mistakes he sees in the corporate world. We also touch on the difference between managing and truly leading, and how teams can make that shift. Kevin brings a unique mix of hard-earned experience and academic depth, with advanced degrees from Columbia University and a long list of published work. Whether you're building a team, growing a business, or just trying to become a better leader — this conversation has something for you.
BT and Sal ripped into the broadcast calls for Pete Alonso's record-breaking home run, focusing on what they felt was a pre-meditated, scripted call from SNY's Gary Cohen. BT argued that the "on his own private iceberg" line was "corny," a sentiment that Sal, despite his affection for Cohen, seemed to agree with. The duo contrasted the TV call with the radio broadcast, praising Keith Hernandez's more organic and fiery reaction. They also dove into a historic Yankees call by John Sterling, and the awkward moment when his partner Charlie Steiner interjected, highlighting the difference between a great, unscripted call and one that feels manufactured.
BT and Sal, still hot after ripping into a recent Mets' broadcast call for being "corny" and "pre-meditated," brought on the legendary John Sterling to discuss his most historic home run calls. The fiery duo celebrated Sterling's ability to capture the moment with unscripted passion and unique flair, a stark contrast to the broadcast calls they had just criticized. Sterling's appearance turned into a masterclass on the art of broadcasting, with the iconic voice of the Yankees sharing the stories behind his most memorable and spontaneous home run calls.
Sal and BT dove into the world of iconic home run calls, prompted by a discussion of Gary Cohen's "on his own private iceberg" line for Pete Alonso's record-breaking home run. The conversation took a fiery turn when they brought in the legendary John Sterling, who revealed the shocking backstory behind the famous Aaron Boone walk-off home run call. Sterling recounted his frustration when his then-partner Charlie Steiner called the home run and then "jumped in" on his signature "Yankees win!" call, a move that Sterling claims Steiner admitted he "always wanted to do." The exchange shed light on the often-fierce, competitive world of sports broadcasting and the deep-seated rivalries that can exist behind the mic.
In a wide-ranging discussion, BT and Sal dive into the future of Pete Alonso following his historic, record-breaking home run. They debate whether the Mets' homegrown slugger should be a "Met for life," weighing the emotional connection with the fanbase against the front office's long-term business strategy. The conversation touches on the historic home run calls from John Sterling, the retirement of Odell Beckham Jr., concerns about Sauce Gardner, and the emergence of Anthony Volpe, and includes three random questions about bathroom breaks during movies, response times to invites, and getting a hair transplant.

They also touch on Giancarlo Stanton, Aaron Boone, and quarterback criticism, defending Boone while noting areas for improvement. C-Lo returns with an update, first addressing a previous mistake. John Sterling offered Aaron Boone advice. Willie discovers former WFAN hosts were technologically gullible. The hour ends with the announcement of marquee Knicks game dates and times. Hour 4 Willie heads to Atlanta, C-Mac to Italy, both embarrassed by their strange algorithms. C-Lo updates on the Yankees' win and Clint Frazier's dislike for the organization. C-Mac discusses the changing role of managers. C-Lo shares more Joe Benigno clips and asks Willie about the 2014 Jets and John Idzik. Willie recounts the team's desire for offseason additions that Idzik refused. Boomer said they only got that far because of the A.L. Central. Boomer thinks Cashman will be here and he will want to keep Boone, but maybe ownership will not. Suzyn also said after the game that the players love Boone. Boomer wonders if they love him so much, ‘why do they play like crap on the field?' Jerry returns for an update and has the final call of John Sterling's career. Gerrit Cole talked about what went wrong in the fifth inning when he didn't cover first base. Juan Soto talked a lot about free agency after the game. JJ Watt can't believe the Texans are the underdog against the Jets. JJ is also tired of all the Aaron Rodgers talk considering they are 2-6. In the final segment of the hour, a classic WFAN caller, Miriam in Forest Hills, calls in to talk about the Yankees inability to score multiple runs in multiple innings. A caller wants Aaron Judge stripped of his captaincy.
The way the Yankees went out, on their own field, was embarrassing. The combination of Gerrit Cole not covering first, and Anthony Rizzo not hustling to first was horrendous. Cole was pitching so great. Rizzo gave a speech to the team the game before. Gio is defending Rizzo for fielding a ball that was spinning in a very odd way and he wanted to make sure he secured the ball. Your $36 million man can't even cover first base. Even after the disastrous fifth inning, they came back and took the lead. Walks and sac flies did them in after that. Boomer doesn't like players ‘butterflying through life'. Jerry is here for his first update of the day and starts with John Sterling on the call as Aaron Judge dropped a fly ball in center. We then heard the Volpe throwing error in the same inning. We then heard from Sterling as Cole didn't cover first base on the Mookie Betts grounder. Then Freddie Freeman had a 2-run single. Then Hernandez hit a ball over Judge's head and the game was suddenly tied 5-5. After the game Aaron Boone said he was ‘heartbroken'. Judge talked about the drop after the game. Gerrit Cole was asked about not covering first. In the final segment of the hour, last night was a ‘never forget type night' for Yankees fans. Juan Soto was asked about free agency after the game and he said all 30 teams are options for him. Boomer said he should have realized it was right after a World Series loss. As much as you care about your team, you will never get that from most players on your team.

As much as you care about your team, you will never get that from most players on your team. Hour 2 Boomer thought the Jets would be 6-2 by the time we got to this game against the Texans, but instead they are 2-6. They are even annoying a nice guy like JJ Watt. He has had enough of the Jets and Aaron Rodgers. We took calls from Yankees fans who can't believe Aaron Judge dropped a fly ball. The ‘Goomba Grabbers' were banned from the game last night. A caller blames Aaron Boone for Gerrit Cole not covering first base and Gio thinks these takes are insane. Jerry returns for an update and has the sounds from Dodgers radio as they win the World Series. Aaron Judge talked about the errors that cost them the game and the series. Juan Soto was asked after the game about his future with the Yankees and if he wants to be here if the money is comparable. He said ‘every team has the same opportunities when I go to free agency'. In the final segment of the hour, Mike Francesa was on the livestream with Barstool last night watching the World Series. Mike was sitting next to Frank The Tank. Oh, and Juan Soto is clearly taking the highest amount he can get. It will not matter which team that is.
