Capers Easterby has spent his career building teams, businesses, and relationships that actually last — the kind that aren't driven by hype, but by doing the right things the right way, over time. He's one of those people who naturally blends sales sense with leadership instincts, and that combination has made him successful across every chapter of his career. More than that, he's a longtime friend who understands what Noob School is all about — learning the business of sales from people who've lived it. This episode is packed with perspective from someone who's seen both sides of growth: winning new business and leading it once it scales. If you're serious about building a career or company that lasts, you'll want to hear this one. My son Jack Sterling returns to Noob School for his fourth appearance — officially becoming the most frequent guest on the show. This one dives deep into what Jack's been up to lately — from his growing business, Cloud Hound, to his work with Upstate Warrior Solution helping veterans transition into entrepreneurship. We start off trading thoughts on our favorite podcasts and how shows like Lions Led by Donkeys and My First Million have influenced the way Jack thinks about leadership, learning, and risk-taking. Jack shares how fantasy football and analytics sparked his fascination with data — eventually leading him to pursue a master's degree in data analytics at Clemson. But the heart of the episode is about purpose — how veterans can rediscover team, mission, and structure through entrepreneurship. Jack breaks down how his program at the Rupert Hughes Veteran Center supports veterans, first responders, and their families across the Upstate by helping them navigate healthcare, education, and business ownership. He shares inspiring success stories from entrepreneurs who've come through the program — from a veteran-run medical training company using human remains for realistic field instruction, to another launching Upstate South Carolina's first paddle tennis facility. We also dig into the lessons he's learned running Cloud Hound — from ditching international business to focusing on “cyber and fiber” solutions for local clients, and why most security breaches start with people, not technology. Jack explains his live training on social engineering, phishing, and why emotional manipulation is hackers' easiest path in. To wrap it up, he shares the book that's had the biggest impact on him — “Tribe” by Sebastian Junger — and why it reframed his entire view of community, fulfillment, and the difference between the military and civilian worlds. If you've ever wondered how to find purpose after leaving a structured environment, or how to turn your skills into impact, this one's for you. When I sat down with Lamar Flatt — former Harvard basketball player, USC law graduate, and now partner at Best & Flatt, P.A. — I knew we'd cover a lot of ground. Lamar's story takes him from the court to the courtroom, starting his law career in Savannah, GA, before returning to South Carolina, and he's built a reputation as both a sharp attorney and a lifelong learner. In our conversation, we talk about why curiosity matters, the importance of always seeking knowledge, and a perspective we discuss called “ant theory.” Imagine a closet that, to a colony of ants, is their entire world. They don't realize there's an entire house beyond it, or even more beyond the house. The same goes for us as humans: there's always more to discover if we keep looking and keep learning. Along the way, Lamar shares stories from his own path in law, how he approaches cases, and the mindset that's carried him through challenges and opportunities. If you're serious about growth, staying curious, and seeing the bigger picture in your own life and career, this episode will resonate. In Episode 148 of Noob School, I talk with Kevin Farrell — a retired U.S. Army Colonel and now the President and CEO of Battlefield Leadership. Kevin's career has spanned the military, academia, consulting, and even Hollywood, where he served as the senior military advisor on the Brad Pitt film Fury. But through all of it, one theme has stayed constant: leadership matters, especially under pressure. We talk about how his experience leading troops in combat shaped his understanding of leadership — and why those lessons still apply to business leaders today. Kevin shares stories from his work helping companies grow stronger through historical case studies and dives into some of the most common leadership mistakes he sees in the corporate world. We also touch on the difference between managing and truly leading, and how teams can make that shift. Kevin brings a unique mix of hard-earned experience and academic depth, with advanced degrees from Columbia University and a long list of published work. Whether you're building a team, growing a business, or just trying to become a better leader — this conversation has something for you.
Sal and BT dove into the world of iconic home run calls, prompted by a discussion of Gary Cohen's "on his own private iceberg" line for Pete Alonso's record-breaking home run. The conversation took a fiery turn when they brought in the legendary John Sterling, who revealed the shocking backstory behind the famous Aaron Boone walk-off home run call. Sterling recounted his frustration when his then-partner Charlie Steiner called the home run and then "jumped in" on his signature "Yankees win!" call, a move that Sterling claims Steiner admitted he "always wanted to do." The exchange shed light on the often-fierce, competitive world of sports broadcasting and the deep-seated rivalries that can exist behind the mic.
BT and Sal ripped into the broadcast calls for Pete Alonso's record-breaking home run, focusing on what they felt was a pre-meditated, scripted call from SNY's Gary Cohen. BT argued that the "on his own private iceberg" line was "corny," a sentiment that Sal, despite his affection for Cohen, seemed to agree with. The duo contrasted the TV call with the radio broadcast, praising Keith Hernandez's more organic and fiery reaction. They also dove into a historic Yankees call by John Sterling, and the awkward moment when his partner Charlie Steiner interjected, highlighting the difference between a great, unscripted call and one that feels manufactured.
BT and Sal, still hot after ripping into a recent Mets' broadcast call for being "corny" and "pre-meditated," brought on the legendary John Sterling to discuss his most historic home run calls. The fiery duo celebrated Sterling's ability to capture the moment with unscripted passion and unique flair, a stark contrast to the broadcast calls they had just criticized. Sterling's appearance turned into a masterclass on the art of broadcasting, with the iconic voice of the Yankees sharing the stories behind his most memorable and spontaneous home run calls.
In a wide-ranging discussion, BT and Sal dive into the future of Pete Alonso following his historic, record-breaking home run. They debate whether the Mets' homegrown slugger should be a "Met for life," weighing the emotional connection with the fanbase against the front office's long-term business strategy. The conversation touches on the historic home run calls from John Sterling, the retirement of Odell Beckham Jr., concerns about Sauce Gardner, and the emergence of Anthony Volpe, and includes three random questions about bathroom breaks during movies, response times to invites, and getting a hair transplant.
C-Mac speculates if the Mets will finally call up a top pitching prospect to face the Braves, a team they struggle against. C-Mac also admires Gerrit Cole's mustache. C-Lo returns with an update, first taking accountability for an earlier mistake. John Sterling offered Aaron Boone advice. Willie discovers former WFAN hosts were technologically gullible. The segment concludes with the announcement of marquee Knicks game dates and times.
Hour 1 With Boomer, Gio, and Jerry in Pebble Beach, Chris McMonigle and Willie Colon fill in. The Yankees won, but C-Mac isn't impressed, finding the constant comparison to past teams annoying. Willie agrees, noting the evolution of sports. C-Lo's update highlights the Yankees' relief win and ponders the Mets' Phillies/Reds rooting interest. They expect Pete Alonso to hit his 253rd career HR. Willie dislikes joint practices. The group discusses modern slang and Shedeur Sanders. C-Mac questions how Mets fans would react if Alonso breaks the club HR record in a loss during the team's slump. Hour 2 C-Mac and Willie discuss the Yankees, Steelers, and Aaron Rodgers. C-Lo provides an update, referencing "The Sandlot" and criticizing modern language. They also touch on Giancarlo Stanton, Aaron Boone, and quarterback criticism, defending Boone while noting areas for improvement. Hour 3 C-Mac questions if the Mets will finally call up a top pitching prospect to face the Braves, a team they struggle against. C-Mac admires Gerrit Cole's mustache. C-Lo returns with an update, first addressing a previous mistake. John Sterling offered Aaron Boone advice. Willie discovers former WFAN hosts were technologically gullible. The hour ends with the announcement of marquee Knicks game dates and times. Hour 4 Willie heads to Atlanta, C-Mac to Italy, both embarrassed by their strange algorithms. They debate baseball analytics with an old man and discuss sports entertainment, bathroom reading, and barbershop adult magazines. C-Lo updates on the Yankees' win and Clint Frazier's dislike for the organization. C-Mac discusses the changing role of managers. C-Lo shares more Joe Benigno clips and asks Willie about the 2014 Jets and John Idzik. Willie recounts the team's desire for offseason additions that Idzik refused. The Moment of The Day revisits the McAdoo Disaster. The hour ends with cruise discussions and Giants/Jets practice reports.
Hour 3: Keith is looking forward to filling in for Boomer and Gio on Wednesday. The Yankees outfield defense is a major liability. The Yankee pitching is a liability, and John Sterling has some advice for Aaron Boone, Clint Frazier said the Yankees problems run far beyond Aaron Boone.
Host Brandon Contes interviews Yankees radio play-by-play broadcaster Dave Sims. In November 2024, longtime baseball announcer Dave Sims was named the new radio play-by-play voice of the New York Yankees. Sims replaces John Sterling who held the position since 1989. Sims has been the TV/Radio voice of the Seattle Mariners from 2007-2024. Sims has an extensive career and is one of the first voices on WFAN radio, the flagship station of Yankee games. In this episode, Sims tells the story of leaving Seattle for New York, and how this is all full circle for him. He discusses all of his stops along the way, having grown up in Philadelphia, and worked primarily in New York. Dave has called NFL football and NCAA college basketball in addition to baseball. He's also one of the original voices of MLB Radio in 2000/2001 and was instrumental in helping Seth leave Seattle ironically, and head to MLB.
