Foozled It is the comedy podcast about how making mistakes makes success. Lynn Ruth Miller, the world's oldest standup comic regails us with stories of her first burlesque show and we discuss how fighting the status quo starts with you. Years of experience taught Lynn Ruth to be herself and stand up for herself, not only because no one else will, but because by standing tall you give the next people strong shoulders to stand on. You can find Lynn Ruth on Instagram @lynnruthmiller and Facebook Lynn Ruth Miller. Get her book "Getting the last laugh" on Amazon.
At an age when most people are struggling to get out of bed, Lynn Ruth Miller is running circles around people half her age. Now 87, this octogenarian energizer bunny, has solidified a comedy career on both sides of the Atlantic, a career that didn’t even start until age 70. Some say the best comedy comes from pain. This could explain Lynn Ruth‘s stand-up success. Aside from her advanced years, which truly sets apart from most comedians, her life journey included a severely dysfunctional upbringing, two failed marriages, anorexia and surprise, low self-esteem. Not only did Lynn Ruth dive head-first into comedy at age 70, she took an opportunity to perform in England and ended up relocating there, earning accolades and new fans in the process. More importantly she has embraced and her age with joy and acceptance. I’ve interviewed a number of record holders for my podcast but if few if any have Lynn Ruth‘s fearless attitude, indomitable spirit and zest for life. Even if her comedy was not your cup of English tea, her interview alone is worth her insights on the importance of attitude and mindset. Enjoy Episode 17 and Lynn Ruth. Welcome to Episode 2 of #TheOutspoken. In this episode we're talking about all things ageing, anti-ageing, ageism and positive ageing.I start by chatting to 86 year old comedian (dubbed the Joan Collins of the fringe), author and burlesque dancer Lynn Ruth Miller. If you've ever feared getting older then you need to listen to this woman. Her energy, ambition and joy in her age are just so incredibly inspiring.Next I read out all your messages and emails talking about how you feel society views ageing. I also reveal the results of the polls asking whether you're scared of looking your age and if you dislike the words "anti-ageing" and "anti-wrinkle" that are still so often used by beauty brands. the results are fascinating. Finally I interview author and journalist Anne Karpf. She's written a book called "How To Age" and is very vocal about how we need to shift our perception of and conversation around ageing. She for one cannot bear the words anti-ageing and I loved hearing her views.----------------------If you want to be part of The Outspoken, get your voice heard and be an outspoken change maker then DM me with what you'd like to talk about via Instagram @OutspokenBeautyNicola or email me nicola@outspokenbeauty.co.uk. Back at the beginning of March 2020, just before the world ended, Louise caught up with the legendary Lynn Ruth Miller, while she was in Glasgow to perform at The Stand Comedy Club. Louise and Lynn chatted for nearly three hours, but we've managed to get the episode down to a manageable 45 minutes, with the promise to meet again for Part 2. Lynn Ruth Miller is a standup comedian who is happily single, funny as hell, and 86 years old. This is an hour of conversation to listen to if you've ever felt uncertain or fearful about the future. Lynn Ruth shows us, as single women and as human beings, that the future never stops being bright. It is also incredibly powerful to hear from her about so many dating themes she encountered that are, perhaps unfortunately, still true today. We are not alone, we never are and we never were, and Lynn Ruth Miller is a beautiful example of how we can do whatever we want, whenever we want, for as long as we want, and that's f*cking fabulous. Two trigger warnings for listeners: Lynn Ruth discusses both domestic violence and eating disorders in this episode. "You can be whoever you want to be in America, in your gated community, away from all those dirty poor people who might cast judgement on you." My own personal golden girl, Lynn Ruth Miller stops by the Rhodes library to share the best lessons she has learned in life and to tell me about her new life living in London and performing all over the world. After getting fucked by #wellsfargo bank on a refinancing scam she lost her house and disgusted with the ruthless nature of American capitalism she moved to England at 80 years old to take a chance on having a comedy career there. After a bumpy start in Brighton she is making a name for herself in London and now performing all over the world. "I don't think enough sympathy has been shown to the Germans for what they went through in World War II." "It must have been hell being a man in the 1950s. You had to work to support a home and family and you had to please a demanding wife." "Now is the best time to be alive because you can be whatever gender you want now." After Bush we got Obama so after Trump I think our next president will be a black left handed midget lesbian. "The world is going through a transition right now and I think it is headed in a great place because you can be whoever you want to be right now." "Why don't we have faith that the majority of people want to better themselves?" Republicans care about families, but specifically their family only. White college educated soccer moms are the reason why things are the way they are in this country now. They've got what they need so fuck everyone else. "You can be whoever you want to be in America, in your gated community, away from all those dirty poor people who might cast judgement on you." What's hot between the covers? 'The God of small things', 'How green was my valley', 'To kill a mockingbird' and 'Of mice and men.' "It's a funny thing when no one wants you. The thing you have to remember about rejection is that everyone is trying to protect themselves." You can't let other people decide how you feel about yourself. Happiness is not being dead and having something to look forward to. "Plant a tree and give someone a cuddle. That's all we can do. At her age her biggest break will be a hip fracture." Just remember, "The woods would be silent if the only birds who sang were the ones who sang best." Patreon.com/tomrhodesradiosmartcamp

The BEST and most fantastic Lynn-Ruth Miller kindly joins me for existential podcast chats in the corridor of a comedy club after she rocked a set there. The audio quality is terrible (my bad), but what Lynn-Ruth has to say is unmissable. Lynn-Ruth Miller is a Comedian, Writer, Artist and has been many other things including teaching, freelancing, studying a Masters in Communication, among other things! Lynn-Ruth tells us about her journey into stand-up comedy at 70 years of age and how that has transformed her, her mentality and her life. Lynn-Ruth also tells us about being 30 years of age, divorced twice, having to do freelance work because, at that time, 30 was "too old to hire a woman". In addition, Lynn-Ruth tells us of her experiences with eating disorders, being on Disability, having to heal herself, self-care regime, having a pet, doing Burlesque to songs she has created, her experience of depression, changing countries, leaving her roots behind, having a good time with life, losing her home, having Bladder Cancer, control issues & anxiety. This really was such a wonderful and very special encounter.

On the way we find out about her life as the oldest working stand-up on the planet, why a bagel is simply never enough to impress her and a story of a date with a sailor that literally almost blew up in her face. This week, Kate Copstick is joined by Phil Ellis, Jason John Whitehead, Lynn Ruth Miller, Twonkey and Wank Bank in Underbelly's late night Abattoir bar.
Comedy, teabagging, fisting, rimming, felching and threesomes. Kate Copstick announces her Edinburgh Fringe podcast without me and remembers a great fetish club. Copstick and Jim Jeffries’ sexual experiences with Doktor CocaColaMcDonalds. Ariane Sherine’s offensive songs. An alternative to the wastefulness of Comic Relief. The Underbelly venue boys in rubberwear. The best knock-knock joke. Previews of 2017 (yes 2017) Edinburgh Fringe shows. Islamic jokes. Eleanor Conway’s sex and cocaine. Comic David Mills reclaims the word faggot . Plus the Mama Biashara charity’s desperate need for a new accountant. The best Edinburgh Fringe poster, the new First Minute Awards and my hot date with Lynn Ruth Miller. Quote of the week from Kate Copstick: “I’m not saying a life is defined by threesomes, foursomes and sticking Class A drugs up your bum, but…” http://www.grouchyclub.co.uk You can also download this audio podcast from iTunes https://itunes.apple.com/gb/podcast/grouchy-clubs-mostly-about/id977279883 John Fleming posts occasional blogs at: http://blog.thejohnfleming.com (Cartoon image of Copstick by Ellis & Rose)

Lynn Ruth Miller, 82-year-old US comedian, talks to John Fleming at her home in Brighton, England, about sex, sado-masochism, her show “Get a Grip”, starting a hamster support group, the UK comedy business, World War II, US TV sets, nostalgia, Italians, the Irish, marriage, the British Royal Family and starting her own blog. Originally, this was supposed to be a Grouchy Club Podcast featuring Lynn Ruth with comedy critics Kate Copstick and Claire Smith, but Claire was tied-up elsewhere and Copstick slept through the whole thing in London. So a chat became the Grouchy Club podcast and, unusually, there are some edits in it. www.grouchyclub.co.uk You can also download this audio podcast from iTunes https://itunes.apple.com/gb/podcast/grouchy-clubs-mostly-about/id977279883 John Fleming’s daily blog is at: http://blog.thejohnfleming.com

Born in 1933 she remembers the war years in a way that will surprise you and her opinion of America is ice cold honest from someone who survived much person disaster and incredible odds to be where she is today. Her charm and joy for life is infectious as it is captivating. She has many strong opinions former from a life fully lived. Through the years I have seen her in San Francisco and other world wide spots where she pops up doing comedy in foreign countries like me. "The woods would be very silent if the only birds who sang were the ones who sang best." Lynn Ruth is a veteran of nine Edinburgh Fringe Festivals and I was happy to see her and her show in Edinburgh this year while I was there. She is like a relative to me, or rather someone I wish was related to me. She stays in touch with me regularly and she is always popping up around the world cheering me on as I am with her. She is someone I always love talking to because she is filled with wisdom and insight aging from life lessons learned. She is not afraid to chase her dream of being a comedian and I am inspired by her ruthless determination and the original energy of joy that goes into each performance. She is quit simply a gem of a human being and it is my pleasure to present to you now, the one and only Lynn Ruth Miller! In my day my mother said baking soda did everything. She sprinkled it all over the bathroom because she said it absorbed odors. I guess it worked because our toilet seat was so gritty I always went next door. Whenever I took a bath, I looked frosted. That’s probably why I love cake. My mom polished her silverware with baking soda and cleaned out our baby bottles. That made the silver look like ivory and I still hate the taste of milk. My mother didn’t spend money on caustic cleaners. She used baking soda to polish plastic, porcelain and glass. And when she felt a storm coming on, she ran outside and put baking soda on the car’s windshield. She said it repels rain if you wipe the windows inside and out and it keeps lightning from striking the car. When I asked her why she didn’t just pull the car into the garage, she washed my mouth out with baking soda. Read more...

This week on Nurse Talk: Lynn Ruth Miller What’s it like to be a stand up comedian traveling the world? Oh..did we mention…an 80 year old stand up comedian traveling the world? Our resident comedian, Lynn Ruth Miller, is with us to talk about what keeps her young at her ripe age and how laughter saved her life. Safe Lift Bill We’ll also visit with Marti Smith, RN Government Relations Lead for the California Nurses Association. Marti will talk about why hospitals are not complying with California’s Safe Lift Bill (AB 1136) passed in January of 2012. Is this something we non-medical people should be concerned about? YES! Trust us when we say you do not want to be dropped on your next hospital visit! Is this possible? Yes, indeed, so stick around and find out why you should know about your neighborhood hospital’s “safe lift” policy. Read more...
In my day no matter what ailed me, my father fixed it up with blackberry brandy. If I ate too much for dinner, and I swore I would explode, Daddy would give me a hefty shot of blackberry brandy. If I suffered from the trots, out came the bottle of brandy and I downed it in one gulp. If I complained of a sore throat, he insisted I gargle with it and the best part was I got to swallow. In moments I was singing like a canary, or so I thought. He also used the brandy as a preventative. If we were all going out caroling or to a community sing we would all drink a Warsaw cocktail before we left the house: vodka, vermouth, blackberry brandy and lemon juice. You can’t beat that for numbing the throat, or the whole body for that matter. Now you’d never do that because you’d be charged with child abuse. Read more...
In my day we didn’t spend a lot of money on medications to cure depression. We didn’t have Zoloft or Paxil. If we complained my mom pushed us outside and told us to get back on the horse. What she meant was, get over it. Never did find that damn horse. If we started to whine, she would pour herself a glass of red and say, “You kids are driving me to drink. Don’t you listen to Bing Crosby? You know, “You gotta Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate the positive. Eliminate the negative. Latch on to the affirmative and don’t mess with Mr. In-Between. And, don’t get in his car either.” We didn’t hospitalize people with depression. If someone in the family was acting funny, we locked them in the attic and we waved to them when we backed out of the driveway. And sometimes they even waved back and my mom would say, “See I told you. Read more...
Can strip tease be healing? You can join me at a burlesque scholarship benefit for victims of rape, sexual abuse, domestic violence, and eating disorders - can learning sexy dance moves (and how to take it off in a way that is scintillating rather than awkward) actually be a part of a healing and empowerment process? How can learning burlesque shimmies (and that awesome twirling pasties helicopter thing) help you reclaim your body (as it is in the moment) and your sense of "sexy-self-hood?" We'll talk to a woman who said it's changed her life - not just now there's glitter all over everything. Dance instructor Bombshell Betty's empowerment-plus-shimmy scholarship program transformed scholarship recipient and survivor Vahalla Voom's life from not-that-glittery to healed joyful self-confidence body-positivity with extra fringe, tiger stripes, bonus openness, and new friends. MC Odessa Lil agrees taking your clothes off on stage is an act of agency and protest in a sex-negative world. We are only bummed that we missed Lynn Ruth Miller, the Stripping Granny at "All Kinds of Sexy." :( Thanks to Alex Akamine for the lovely photo of Tanqueray Von Grafenburg!
