Hi there, exciting show for you this week. Melissa Clark, one of the most prolific cookbook writers of the modern era, joins us. Read on!* Do you love Salt + Spine? We'd love if you shared this email with a friend who might want to #TalkCookbooks with us, too:Episode 146: Melissa ClarkThis week, Melissa Clark joins us to #TalkCookbooks! When we launched Salt + Spine, I wrote a short list of our dream guests — the cookbook authors who, at the time, I felt were pushing the industry in new directions or had a wealth of experience to learn from. We've been lucky to sit down with many folks from that list (from Samin Nosrat to Julia Turshen to Vivian Howard…). Today, we're marking one more off that list as Melissa joins us in-studio to discuss her latest cookbook, Dinner in One.Dubbed the “gold standard for Internet recipe writing” by Eater, Melissa Clark has been developing recipes for over a decade at The New York Times, where she started with a short sidebar on home cooking questions before joining as a columnist and reporter. (A recent search on NYT Cooking showed her byline attached to some 1,391 results!)That early NYT series Melissa authored, called “Food Chain,” offered helpful tips and answers to cooking challenges in the era before such information was one keystroke away. Today, her NYT column, “A Good Appetite,” features everything from a reinvented crab dip to her best Instant Pot recipes. And all the while, Melissa's written 45 cookbooks! She's collaborated on books with chefs like Daniel Boulud, David Bouley, and Claudia Fleming. Her 2017 home-cooking tome, Dinner: Changing the Game, features more than 200 recipes for inventive, interesting meals. She's following it up with her latest work, Dinner in One, which features recipes that use just “one” vessel—one sauté pan, one sheet tray, one pot, etc.In this week's show, we're talking with Melissa about growing up with food-loving parents who immersed her in French food and culture at an early age … how she landed at the NYT, even though she turned down their first job offer … and how dining out is critical to her recipe development process. And, of course, we're putting her to the test in our signature culinary game.Bonus Content + Recipes This WeekThis week, paid subscribers will receive two featured recipes from Melissa's Dinner in One: the Roasted Cauliflower and Potatoes with Harissa, Yogurt, and Toasted Almonds and her Ricotta Olive Oil Pound Cake.Salt + Spine is supported by listeners like you. What is devotion? What role can devotion play in our path as spiritual beings? How can tarot and astrology assist us in deepening our devotional practices? For many of us, myself included, the word ‘devotion' has become a keyword closely associated with the zodiac sign Virgo. In this episode, my partner in conversation, Jeff Hinshaw, invited us to expand our perspective on what it means to cultivate a devotional practice. We discussed what Jeff is learning from this current chapter of their practice - while Saturn transits their 1st house and Jupiter is (mostly) in Pisces. We also spoke about religious trauma and the role that modalities like tarot and astrology can play in helping us connect with spirit when our religious / spiritual upbringing do not provide a place where it feels safe to bring our whole selves.Jeff is someone I admire deeply for their ability to not only present wisdom in an accessible, healing manner, but also embody and exude the frequency of his transmissions with sincerity, gentleness, and care. This conversation is no exception. It's a fluid, mystical transmission recorded at a liminal threshold (on 11.11.22!) and it feels right to share it as the Sun leaves the watery realm of Scorpio into the fiery land of Sagittarius. Here's Jeff's bio:Jeff Hinshaw (he/they) is an intuitive practitioner fusing together over a decade of experience working with tarot, astrology, and somatic healing.  Jeff's practice is grounded in reverence for the elements, nature, the Earth, and Spirit.  Jeff offers their unique expertise of ritual, tarot, and astrology to guide others on journeys of self-exploration, transformation and healing.Jeff is the host of the podcast Cosmic Cousins.  Released on the New and Full Moon, each episode facilitates a deeper connection to the Moon and the current astrological transits.  Jeff is also the founder of the Brooklyn Fools: Tarot Journey – a 22-week ritual gathering through the Major Arcana of the tarot.  Dubbed as a “radical tarot school” by National Geographic, the Brooklyn Fools Tarot Journey has been an active Tarot Community since 2014.  Jeff's teachings of the tarot go hand-in-hand with their astrological practice. You can find Jeff and his work on his website, his podcast, and his Instagram.  This podcast is hosted, produced, and edited by Jonathan Koe. Join Chris in conversation with hip hop legend, Sage Francis, about passions, process… well, really about life and music! Sage Francis is widely considered one of our generation's greatest lyricists. His career derives mainly from gifted wordplay which creates vivid narratives to instigate as well as inspire, but since it often derives from an accumulation of public disdain and personal turmoil, it's more about storming the castle than about watching the throne. Dubbed as the “forefather of indie-hop,” Francis originally earned acclaim in the early 2000's by winning the most highly coveted titles of the emcee battle circuit. With little to no funding, Francis sustained himself by selling his innovative “Sick of” mixtapes, all made by hand on the floor of his Providence, RI apartment. These were essentially bootleg compilations full of select recordings from his 12” vinyl singles, demo sessions, live performances and radio freestyles. The popularity of these tapes birthed Strange Famous Records (SFR); a meager, one-man operation in 1999. Despite having no official distribution, Francis' unique brand of music spread like wildfire via the advent of file sharing networks. This resulted in him attaining a massive cult-like following around the world, creating a demand for his albums and live performances at which point the bigger labels took notice. With his first studio album, Personal Journals (2002,) Francis daringly set aside the more boastful side of rap by catering to his poetic leanings and scathing socio-political commentary. In 2005 Sage Francis was the first hip-hop artist signed to Epitaph Records and soon became one of the highest selling independent artists of his genre. Rather than abandon his day-to-day grind at SFR, he channeled all of his newfound resources into it, allowing the label to expand in staff as well as roster. Having fulfilled his contract obligations with Epitaph Records, Sage Francis has returned to releasing music independently as he gears up to defeat the odds. Once again. “COPPER GONE”, Francis' 6th studio album, dropped on June 3rd, 2014 via Strange Famous Records. This indie release managed to break Billboard's Top 200 as well as iTunes top 5 for hip-hop in both the US and in the UK. In 2016 Sage Francis was granted an honorary patronage by the prestigious Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland for his contributions to literature. Francis continues to tour internationally and is developing a new group project with B. Dolan called EPIC BEARD MEN, slated for a 2018 release. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/tpq20/support

Emma Flukes is an adventure cyclist and bikepacker from Tasmania who was instrumental in developing the 360 mile route across the island that Payson undertook earlier this month. With her guidance, he ended up with a ride full of techy singletrack, gravel roads, river crossings, and lots of wildlife. In this episode (recorded shortly before Payson's crossing), they talk about the specifics of the route, gear choices, and a few uniquely Tasmanian considerations. They also talk about Emma's riding history. Born and bred on the island, she has explored just about every inch of her home state by bike, no matter how rugged. They talk about why she feels compelled to do such grueling rides, how her work as a scientist complements (or doesn't complement) her cycling adventures, and why she prefers solo weekend trips over races. She also discusses her own bikepacking event, Tassie Gift. Dubbed “a scenic trip to Hell,” it's 1,115 miles with 114,829 feet of climbing. According to Emma, it could be a lot harder. She explains why she tries to keep the event small and unsanctioned, and the mindset that determines whether participants finish all 1,000-plus miles or drop out on the first day.

A massive and irreplaceable archive of historically significant photographs is up for sale on the open market, after a lengthy ordeal abroad that almost saw them destroyed. Dubbed the Fairfax Archives, in 2013 the collection of 1.4 million photographs was sent by Fairfax Media to the United States to be digitised. However the company carrying out the digitisation later became linked to sports memorabilia fraud, was raided by the FBI and later bankrupted. The collection of images, as well as others from Australian newspapers, were seized and held as collateral on a US$14 million loan, and were in danger of being destroyed. An L.A-based gallery has since bought the entire archive, and is putting some of the photos up for sale. Described by historians as the country's "national photo album", the archive spans from 1840 to 2005. It includes historic moments like the 1981 Springbok Tour protests, the bombing of the Rainbow Warrior, the aftermath of the 1931 Hawke's Bay earthquake and Sir Edmund Hillary's ascent of Mt Everest - as well as royal visits, Auckland's Queen St and 40,000 pictures of the All Blacks. How do you spell CAT? Wrong. It's CATT, at least when you're talking about Catt Fields White, the high-powered organizer, teacher, consultant, author, podcaster and believer in connecting farmers and those who believe in nutritious, creative foods through 21st century farmers' markets. Her background prepared her well for this path, starting out as a food writer, then becoming a marketing consultant for restaurants, then a construction project manager for a company that built restaurants, then a turnaround consultant for restaurants. One of her turnaround clients, after receiving Catt's advice, simply offered her their restaurant and so she operated it for a few years. Then she took all that accumulated knowledge and shared it with independent restaurant owners through a trade publication she started from scratch. But after the kids were grown and out of the house, Catt tired of the car-oriented life of Phoenix, AZ and moved to downtown San Diego, CA where almost everything was accessible on foot. The only thing missing was grocery shopping. The few Italian delis in Little Italy didn't add up to a full shopping experience for fresh items, so she offered to the Little Italy Association to start a farmers' market and with all her restaurant and purveyor contacts, began putting the pieces together. The idea was to split the profits and so everyone agreed. However, about six months into operation, the Association felt the traffic was too light, the market was an embarrassment to the neighborhood and wanted to shut it down. Catt convinced them to give it a little more time and that turned out to be the tipping point, success from then on. Dubbed the Little Italy Mercato in 2008, it has grown into the county's largest weekly year-round farmers' market, stretching over six city blocks, with 180 tents any given Saturday and around 22,000 attendees. They have added a Wednesday market so that local neighbors can shop without the crowds. Just as Catt shared her restaurant knowledge as a consultant and publisher, she began sharing the steps to her farmers' market success with other farmers. She founded Farmers Market Pros to make the journey easier for small farmers, food makers and other market managers and to advocate for farmers markets' critical place in local food systems. She usually worked in conjunction with community associations and business improvement organizations, stayed close to operations until managers could be transitioned in. Now with Farmers Market Pros, she consults all over the US and is headed soon to Canada and the UK as her fame and reputation keep growing. Farmers Market Pros is where Catt offers education to farmers through her Vendor 101 program series, a conference called InTents: A Farmers Market Conference, and her weekly podcast, Tent Talk. All meant to educate and help farmers be successful. Find out more at cattwhite.com, Instagram at @farmersmarketpros and on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/FarmersMarketPros. Our guest today is Michelle Tam, founder and co-creator of the renowned Nom Nom Paleo universe. Dubbed the Queen of Paleo Cooking, she's co-authored several cookbooks, The New York Times bestselling Nom Nom Paleo, Food for Humans, Ready or Not, and her most recent Nom Nom Paleo: Let's Go!.  She is devoted to sharing paleo, gluten-free and Whole30 recipes, kitchen tips and tricks with a focus on ancestral health, quick and easy eats, and staying paleo while on the go. We chat about her initial discovery of paleo and how it successfully addressed digestion issues earlier in her life before delving into the ways the wide-reaching career that's come from it has impacted how she and her family eats on a daily basis. Along the way, we also get some great kitchen gadget recommendations, talk about boundaries and social media expectations, and hash out a Cracklin' Chicken recipe that will work for any busy family. More than a pure paleo evangelist, she thinks people should figure out what works for them in terms of diet, and actually pay attention to how food makes them feel. “I was always sensitive to injustice…but in terms of how I landed doing civil rights and constitutional rights, especially as it pertains to women, I came into it organically.” An alternative in case that requires too much space. “I was always sensitive to injustice…but in terms of how I landed doing civil rights and constitutional rights…I came into it organically.”   Wendy Murphy Having the opportunity to welcome Wendy Murphy as a guest provided one of the most fascinating and educational conversations on the plight of women that I've ever experienced. From outlining how the law is written to support violence against women to the extent to which there is no one monitoring our judges when they rule in discriminatory ways against women was eye-opening, in the least. Listening to Wendy explain how it is our US Constitution that stands as the underlying cause that allows judges in every courtroom, not just criminal cases, to treat women in a discriminatory way, further ignited my inner passion to fight for women's rights, in my own smaller way. I invite you to join us for this Part 1 of a two-part conversation on what women need to know in order to stand up for themselves on how the minimization of our entire gender is not just alive and well, but legally sanctioned.     BIO For more than fifteen years, Wendy Murphy has served as adjunct professor of sexual violence law at New England Law|Boston, where she also co directs the Women's and Children's Advocacy Project under the Center for Law and Social Responsibility. A former Visiting Scholar at Harvard Law School, Wendy prosecuted child abuse and sex crimes cases for many years. In 1992 she founded the first organization in the nation to provide pro bono legal services to crime victims. Wendy is an impact litigator whose work in state and federal courts has changed the law to better protect the constitutional and civil rights of victimized women and children. Wendy writes and lectures widely on the constitutional and civil rights of women and children and criminal justice policy. She is a contributing editor for The Sexual Assault Report and writes a regular column for The Patriot Ledger. Wendy has published numerous scholarly articles including a landmark law review article explaining the legal relationship between sexual assault on campus and Title IX. Dubbed the “Goddaughter of Title IX” by the “Godmother of Title IX,” Dr. Bernice Sandler, Wendy's impact litigation in the area of campus sexual assault, beginning in the early 1990s, includes groundbreaking victories against Harvard College in 2002, and Harvard Law School and Princeton University in 2010, which cases led the way to widespread awareness and reforms, including the well-known April 2011 Dear Colleague Letter. Wendy is a popular and bold speaker on the lecture circuit who describes herself as “fiercely non-partisan.” Wendy is also a well-known television legal analyst who Emmy Award-winning journalist Emily Rooney calls the “best talker” on television with a “finger on the pulse of victims' and women's rights.” Wendy has worked for NBC, CBS, CNN and Fox News. She regularly provides legal analysis for network and cable news programs. Her first book, “And Justice For Some,” was published by Penguin/Sentinel in 2007, and re-released in paperback in 2013.

Imagine going out for a night on the town with your friends and returning home to a message on your computer. The scenario sounds pretty standard in the internet age. Now, imagine that same scenario in 1984, long before the internet had entered the public psyche. That is exactly what happened to Ken Webster when his BBC micro became a communication device between him and a mysterious other. Whatsmore, the person on the other end of the line claimed to be from the 17th century. To top it all off, Ken and his girlfriend Debbie have been trying to explain the strange, almost ghostly, events in their home to their new roommate Nic. All this culminated when the group contacted yet another entity on the other end of their BBC microcomputer, which claimed to be from the year 2109. The story seems too wild to be true, but for many who were close to those to whom it happened, the story is far from fiction. Dubbed the Doddleston Messages, these electronic letters predated email and have been attributed to time travelers, ghosts, aliens, and everything in between. Long Haulers UPDATED (video)Long Haulers Mechanisms (video)SARS-CoV-2 and the gut-brain-lung axis (video review of a research paper)From the onset of the pandemic through the last (almost) 3 years, we have continued to find out new things about how people respond after coronavirus infection. Not surprisingly, there is more and more research coming out indicating that an increased autoimmune response may be responsible for many of the lingering symptoms. Early on in the pandemic, SARS-CoV-2 was nicknamed "The Autoimmune Virus" because it appeared to be triggering more of an autoimmune response than other viral infections. As science has continued to evolve our understanding, it turns out that COVID infection is absolutely associated with increased autoimmunity - both exacerbation of existing autoimmunity as well as new autoimmunity. Autoimmunity is the process in which the body "loses self tolerance" for tissues of the body and begins to initiate an immune "attack" against self-tissue (thyroid, joints, brain, gut, etc) as if they were a foreign invader - which leads to chronic inflammation, tissue damage, and a gradual loss of function, and can eventually become a diagnosed autoimmune "disease" like Type 1 Diabetes or Rheumatoid Arthritis. One of the ways that viruses can trigger autoimmunity is by means of "molecular mimicry", or what can be described as a case of "mistaken identity". In this podcast I describe it like this - I have a blue F150 pickup truck, extended cab, long bed. There are many blue F150s on the road, so what if the police were looking for a blue F150 and they accidentally pull ME over instead of the bad guy they are looking for? That's a case of mistaken identity. Well COVID antibodies can also misdirect their immune attack, and they can accidentally attack many tissues, and in this episode I go through dozens of different autoantibodies that have now been associated with COVID - - thyroid autoantibodies, neurological autoantibodies, mitochondrial autoantibodies, and more. We now know that COVID infection can lead to a myriad of symptoms, and they can all be described as the "long-haul", but the mechanisms can be all quite different, so they are NOT all the same thing, and it's not fair to group everyone together as "long-haulers". You could have POTS, dysautonomia, clotting/coagulation, neurological (depression, brain fog, and TONS of anxiety...), digestive changes, fatigue, or you could develop post-COVID diabetes or arthritis.....as science continues to learn more are we going to find that it's ALL autoimmune in nature?? Only time will tell, but I believe that treating any condition as if it were an autoimmune case is never a bad approach - decrease inflammation, balance the immune system, and look for (and remove) any root cause triggers!

It wouldn't be Spooky Season without a classic horror movie like Psycho, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, or Silence of the Lambs. But what do all of these macabre movies have in common? This week, Hannah tells Katy about the man that inspired the villains from some of the best known movies in horror history: Eddie Gein. From living under the thumb of a violently religious mother, to a life of crippling loneliness and poor social skills, Eddie quietly descended into a hellish world of desperately trying to find comfort and companionship wherever and however he could, even, as it turned out, in the graveyard. Dubbed, the Plainfield Butcher, Eddie would eventually be found out after a local woman went missing, and was found the same day, gutted and hanging in his shed. What police found in his house was even more disturbing. This one is not for those with weak stomachs, and obviously not for children. But it does highlight why talking about mental health is so important to us. So pour those drinks, maybe don't eat anything, and settle in for this creepy tale! Sources: https://open.spotify.com/episode/1CSvRfaae5zNNyVyFPAp3A?si=DZSOPF-STCqpW58eqst8qQhttps://web.archive.org/web/20130927193955/http://mensnewsdaily.com/2007/04/27/augusta-gein-the-woman-who-drove-a-man-psycho/https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ed_Gein#In_popular_cultureSchechter, Harold (1989). Back in August, the University of New Orleans announced the launch of the Louisiana Wind Energy Hub at UNO. Dubbed, “The Beach at UNO,” the new hub will not only help grow the wind energy industry in Louisiana, but also increase demand for talent, research, and business development in the area. Rebecca Conwell, President and CEO of The Beach at UNO, and Shafin Khan, vice president of external affairs and innovation at The Beach at UNO, tell us more. Two Louisiana parishes put the brakes on projects related to carbon sequestration in order to take time to further study the environmental safety of the procedure. Alex Kolker, associate professor of coastal geology at LUMCON, Louisiana Universities Marine Consortium, tells us more about carbon sequestration, the potential benefits and the causes for concern. But first, WWNO and WRKF have partnered with America Amplified, a community engagement journalism initiative that unites public media stations across the states. For the last few weeks, America Amplified has been airing a series of stories looking at how people across the country are contributing to their communities. They call this series “Democracy from the Ground Up.” Today we go to New Iberia, Louisiana to meet physical therapist Stephanie Lamparez, who has spent the last 30 years coaching and advocating for athletes with disabilities all across the state. Louisiana Considered's Alana Schreiber has the story. Today's episode of Louisiana Considered was hosted by Adam Vos. Our managing producer is Alana Schreiber and our digital editor is Katelyn Umholtz. One of my favourite things about making The Shift podcast is all the fascinating women I get to interview - and learn a little bit from. So I'm revisiting a few of my favourite episodes while I finish putting together the new season. I had long been an admirer of Dr Jen Gunter's no-bull approach to women's health before I met her eighteen months ago. She didn't disappoint! Here are the original show notes:The best way I can think of to describe this week's guest is that she's a women's health vigilante. (A vagina vigilante if you will!) Dubbed twitter's resident gynaecologist, and the nemesis of snake oil salesmen everywhere, Dr Jen Gunter is the living embodiment of “information is power”. She has made it her life's mission to give you the information you need to make life better for you - and for your vagina. Best known for her book The Vagina Bible, and publicly taking Gwyneth Paltrow's lifestyle website Goop to task for, amongst other things, flogging jade eggs. “Dear Ms Paltrow,” she wrote back in 2017, “It is the biggest load of garbage I have read on your site since vaginal steaming.” Now Jen is bringing that same, erm, direct approach to the menopause with her new book, The Menopause Manifesto. A banger of a book that tells you everything you could possibly need to know and plenty of stuff you don't but will be glad you do.Jen is characteristically no-bull as she talks menopause, mental health, why we all need to know WTF is going on and why women need more menopausal role models. And whatever you do, don't get her started on manufacturers who think shoving “meno” in front of a product name is a licence to print money…! Join me and Jen as we cross the crimson bridge and throw ourselves a meno partiy! Welcome to the order of menopause!• You can buy all the books mentioned in this podcast at Bookshop.org, including the book that accompanies this podcast, The Shift: how I lost and found myself after 40 - and you can too by Sam Baker and The Menopause Manifesto by Dr Jen Gunter.* And if you'd like to support the work that goes into making this podcast and get a weekly newsletter plus loads more content including transcripts of the podcast, please join The Shift community. In October of 2019, prison officers at HMP Full Sutton in West Yorkshire discovered the body of a prisoner who'd been subjected to 89 minutes of torture before being strangled to death by another inmate. The victim was 33-year-old Richard Huckle. Dubbed by the media as "The Gap Year Paedophile", Huckle was serving a life sentence for carrying out a 9-year-long, systematic campaign of abuse against some of the world's poorest children. Huckle documented his atrocities on the dark web, authored a how-to-guide for paedophiles, and contributed to one of the largest nonce-networks ever discovered. This is the story of Richard Huckle and the incredible officers who brought him down.
