Andy Farnsworth joins KSL-TV to help audiences decipher #WhatToWatch for the weekend of August 22, 2025. The highest-grossing animated film of all time, "Ne Zha II," comes to local theaters from China and is dubbed into English for the first time. It's epic and looks great, but patience is required. If you want to see beautiful people roughing it, "Eden" from director Ron Howard may be more your thing. Of local interest, "The Streak" is a must-watch for sports fans as this new documentary in theaters explores the 1987 Salt Lake Trappers and their historic 29-game winning streak 38 years ago. And finally, a young adult romance movie on streaming for Gen Z called "The Map That Leads To You" is a gorgeously shot movie about star-crossed lovers on Amazon Prime Video. The brains behind Fan Effect are connoisseurs of categories surpassing nerdy, with a goal to publish a weekly "What to Watch on the Weekend" minisode taken from KSL-TV's Friday segment, and two deep-dives a month on shows, creative works, artists, local events, and other fandom topics. Based in the beautiful beehive state, Fan Effect celebrates Utah's unique fan culture as it has been declared The Nerdiest State in America by TIME, and is hosted by KSL Movie Show's Andy Farnsworth and KSL Podcasts' KellieAnn Halvorsen. AP's Lisa Dwyer reports on the announcement of a new immigration detention center.
This week on the Mark Levin Show, the Democratic Party continues to try and link President Trump to Jeffrey Epstein. Unfortunately, no details are being revealed because of the case's sensitive nature, not due to any attempt to hide information by Trump. It is impossible to force the grand jury to reveal this information, as that would infringe upon the privacy rights that are fundamental to every case during its jurisdiction. These so-called influencers are promoting the Epstein issue as a significant concern, yet a CNN poll conducted by Harry Enten shows that interest in the Epstein matter has waned considerably. Senator Adam Schiff's in hot water—he's been accused of corruption and mortgage fraud. The FHFA says he listed both his Maryland and California homes as his “primary residence” to score better loan terms, which could violate federal laws. Now the Justice Department is looking into it, and Schiff says it's all political payback from President Trump, which is just his way of trying to brush off what he did. George and Alex Soros are relentlessly working to undermine this nation. Despite the Soros family amassing billions from this country, they choose to finance antisemitic protestors, purchase radio stations to sway public opinion, and back radical Democrats and influencers. They are now supporting protests against President Trump's crime crackdown in Washington, D.C., including a $20 million contribution to groups opposing the deployment of National Guard troops and federalization of D.C.'s police. When will the Republicans investigate the Soros family? Finally, the bizarre incident involving Sean Charles Dunn, a former Justice Department employee who threw a sandwich at federal officers. Dubbed the "D.C. sandwich slinger" by the New York Post, Dunn's actions have sparked outrage and legal consequences. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

This week, Emily Hart speaks to multi-award-winning translator Frank Wynne about Latin America's most beloved cartoon - Mafalda - and how he brought her to life in English. Dubbed ‘a hero of our time' by Italian philosopher Umberto Eco and ‘Charlie Brown with Socialism' by the New York Times, Mafalda is a precocious six-year-old girl living in 1960s Argentina - full of questions and observations about the world and the adults who surround her. She loves democracy; she hates soup and yoyos. Though often lighthearted and sprinkled with slapstick and wordplay, her curiosity and questions are more than they initially appear: illustrator Joaquín Lavado, known as ‘Quino' uses her seemingly innocent interrogations to skewer the hypocrisies and nonsense of contemporary politics. In the voice of a cartoon child, these questions and criticisms ran under the radar, but in 1970s Argentina, even her voice felt too critical: Quino left the country, which then suffered a coup and a subsequent military junta. He later said he would have been arrested had he continued to publish Mafalda; many of his friends and collaborators were. Though the cartoon strip only ran for ten years, and Quino himself died in 2020, Mafalda has a huge and lasting legacy across the world - from Argentina where it began, to Chile where it was banned, and here in Colombia too: you can see statues and graffiti of her in Buenos Aires, and buy her merchandise down the banks of the River Seine. Frank will be telling us about this Latin American icon and the process of translating her into English – the first translation ever published, which came out in June of this year. He'll be tackling the tensions inherent in translating comedy – especially in cartoon strip form – as well talking about the stealthy satire and societal critique which Mafalda was able to enact: a crucial humanist and critical voice, disguised as a child. We'll also talk about how Mafalda's relevance reaches way beyond her context and time, about modern censorship and satire amid deepening repression, and why now is the perfect time for Mafalda to reach English-speaking audiences - particularly (perhaps) in the United States. Frank also tells us who Mafalda would have been if she was born today, and who she'd have been if she grew up… Plus the Colombia Briefing - also reported by Emily Hart.
In this explosive follow-up to The Meadow Project, Trey Hudson takes you deeper into the shadows of one of America's most bizarre hotspots for the paranormal. Dubbed “the South's Skinwalker Ranch,” this mysterious patch of land rivals its Utah counterpart in mind-bending phenomena: UFOs, bizarre entities, missing time, disembodied voices, portals, and other Unexplained Terrestrial Events (UTEs) that defy logic—and terrify seasoned investigators. But this time, it's not just about the Meadow.Through extensive research and boots-on-the-ground expeditions, Hudson uncovers unsettling commonalities between the Meadow and other infamous locations—like the eerie Stardust Ranch, the enigmatic Marley Woods, and the legendary Bradshaw Ranch. Disturbing patterns emerge: vanishing beings, cubes from the ether, ghostly figures caught on film, and physical effects that linger long after the encounters end. You'll witness hypnotic regressions that reveal abductions too bizarre to fabricate, chilling thermal images of creatures half-formed in another reality, and a closer look at the “boxes” that defy explanation—appearing from nowhere, seen by multiple credible witnesses, and caught on camera.Return to the Meadow isn't just a sequel. It's a revelation.Whatever is happening out there—it's evolving, it's intelligent, and it's spreading...BioTrey is the current Director of the Oxford Paranormal Society (OPS) and the Anomalous Studies and Observation Group (ASOG).He grew up in Atlanta. Dubbed the Meme Queen of Depression by Mashable, Aiden Arata's real goal on Instagram was to build a big enough following to convince traditional publishers to let her write a book. Thus her new collection of essays, You Have a New Memory, in which Arata reveals the chillingly empty realities about her millennial "Doom" generation's relationship with social media. There really isn't much of an influencer economy, Arata confesses, acknowledging that most social media "stars" are, in fact, grifters. So the only way to monetize one's influencer status is by writing a traditional book which, Arata argues, also offers a refuge from what she calls the "flattened" language of digital media. 1. Arata Became an Influencer to Enable Her Real Dream"I think that I created an internet following to trick people into letting me write a book. I've always wanted to write a book... I've always been a writer."Arata reveals her Instagram success was strategic - a means to literary credibility rather than an end goal.2. Social Media Has "AI'd" Us Before AI Arrived"I think it's interesting because just sort of the way that algorithms train us to use certain language... we kind of have AI'd ourselves by mimicking certain phrases and just flattening... the field of interpretation for words."She argues we've already been conditioned to communicate like machines, making actual AI less of a leap.3. Digital Content Creates an Existential Crisis"I call it plastic bag theory. And it's this idea that... the internet is like a plastic bag, it's disposable, but it's also forever. It's sort of on its trash island swirling out there somewhere. And then when we use the internet, we kind of become that as well."Her metaphor captures how online content - and creators - exist in a liminal state between temporary and permanent.4. The "Doom Generation" Faces Unprecedented Awareness"We've never been so aware of all of the atrocities that happen around us and to us. And we've sort of also never been so aware of our own powerlessness to affect change."She explains why her generation feels particularly anxious about the future.5. Books Offer Refuge from Digital Language Flattening"A book is a really beautiful response to that. It's reclaiming language as something that can go on these sort of philosophical eddies and can have a metaphor that's a little bit complicated... that is like just perfect in its weird slanty little way."Despite her digital success, she sees traditional publishing as essential for preserving nuanced human expression.Keen On America is a reader-supported publication. True Crime Tuesday presents: Chasson's Run: The Prison Break That Captivated America w/ Author, Daniel Zimmerman ! CHASSON'S RUN: The Prison Break That Captivated America And the Love Story That Fueled It is a gripping true crime tale that will leave you on the edge of your seat. On September 6, 1982, convicted murderer Leroy James Chasson made a daring break for freedom from the Massachusetts Correctional Institute-Walpole-one of the most infamous, escape-proof prisons in the country. But this wasn't just any prison break. It was a meticulously planned, five-year effort, made possible by an unlikely accomplice-Kathleen MacDonald, Chasson's former pen-pal turned wife. Leroy Chasson, wounded and bleeding from self-inflicted wounds was first transferred to a hospital for treatment. Then, using a .45 automatic smuggled to him by his wife who was disguised as a nurse, took hospital guards and staff hostage, before fleeing under a hail of gunfire. Dubbed the "Bonnie and Clyde" of Massachusetts, the couple's daring run across the country captivated the nation and they would evade capture for years. Living under assumed identities, they nearly made it-until a tip from America's Most Wanted led to their eventual capture in 1989. On today's TCT, Dan tells us what separated LeRoy Chasson from other psychopaths and killers. He also tells us why people were attracted to such a volatile man and how he and his wife were able to elude police for so long... This is Part 7 of the mini-series that covers the story of Bobby Baker. This mini-series is part of a larger series covering Billy Sol Estes, Mac Wallace, Bobby Baker and other members of Johnson's Texas inner circle. All of these men were quite intertwined around Johnson at the time of the assassination. They were involved in circumstances that were closing in on Johnson too and that provided him great motive in the killing of the President. The story is extraordinary. Today's episode tells the story of the Quorum Club. Dubbed by Baker himself as one of his least notable accomplishments, it turned out to be a lightening rod in his own investigation. It was more than a watering hole, and it surely was a place to do business privately...regardless of what sort of private business you were planning to do. It would be a principal focus during the FBI investigation of Baker and Ellen Rometch and remain front and center in the overall corruption investigation conducted by the Senate of Bobby Baker. From Lyndon Johnson's vantage point, here was Bobby Baker who was known as Little Lyndon and was perhaps the second most powerful man in the senate. He was Bobby Baker the Secretary to the Majority, the right hand man of Lyndon Johnson in the senate....and just months before the assassination, allegations of wrong doing by Baker begin to surface. Baker declined to meet with Senators, and alternatively chose to resign his position as majority secretary of the Senate. Baker's resignation from one of the most powerful positions in the country happened just prior to the President's assassination and created a growing rumor that the scandal would lead back to Johnson and result in his political demise or more... The Republicans smelled blood in the water. Join us in this seventh episode of what is sure to be a fascinating series on another incredible story that envelopes around Lyndon Johnson at the time of the Kennedy assassination. Rumors of Johnson's involvement began to swirl almost immediately after the President's assassination and there is a defined school of thought within the JFK assassination research community that staunchly believes in Johnson's involvement. His involvement in both the assassination and its cover up. Join us in one of the most fascinating story tells of the Kennedy assassination and stick around as we will be returning to the Mexico City series right after we complete this min-series that was spawned by the recent release of the Billy Sol Estes and Cliff Carter tape that the two recorded in 1971. Folks, you just can't write this stuff. Even as early as 1964, rumors and serious concerns over the lone gunman theory and the evidence that might contravene it, were becoming a major concern for the government and the commission. Conspiracy theories were contrary to the government's stated narrative from the very beginning. This real-life story is more fascinating than fiction. No matter whether you are a serious researcher or a casual student, you will enjoy the fact filled narrative and story as we relive one of the most shocking moments in American History. An event that changed the nation and changed the world forever.

How can virtual architecture expand the role of the architect? In this week's episode of Practice Disrupted, Evelyn Lee talks with Ryan Scavnicky, better known as Scav, about the future of architectural education, immersive digital environments, and redefining what it means to design space. As the Assistant Professor at Marywood University and creator of its new Bachelor of Virtual Architecture (BVA) program, Scav is imagining an architectural education rooted in video games, virtual reality, live streaming, and spatial storytelling.Dubbed the “Godfather of Architecture Memes” by Architectural Digest, Scav's journey is anything but traditional. After training at the University of Cincinnati and working internationally at firms like Coop Himmelb(l)au, he pivoted to academia and new media, exploring how digital space can be as meaningful and architectural as physical buildings. He shares how Twitch streaming, immersive crit sessions, and real-time collaboration have reshaped his understanding of design and pedagogy.Evelyn and Scav explore the implications of this new degree program and what it means for the future of practice. They discuss how architecture has historically overlooked virtual space, how the profession might embrace new tools without losing its critical rigor, and how graduates of this program might expand into careers in game design, XR, storytelling, and tech, while still thinking like architects. The episode also examines the deeper cultural implications of space in games and film, and how architects can reclaim authorship in those expanding frontiers.“To me, this is still just architecture. We're reaching a new medium of space, one that lives on screens, through headsets, inside games - and we have the tools to shape that with the same intentionality and care we bring to buildings.” - Ryan ScavnickyThe episode concludes with a reflection on accessibility, immersion, and how virtual environments can be both technically and emotionally meaningful. Scav offers insight into how the profession can evolve, starting in the studio, and why it's time to take digital spatial design seriously as a legitimate architectural practice.Guest:Ryan Scavnicky (Scav) is a designer, educator, content creator, and Assistant Professor at Marywood University, where he leads the newly launched Bachelor of Virtual Architecture program. With a background spanning traditional architecture, theory, memes, and digital media, Scav is known for translating architectural thinking into new formats, including Twitch, TikTok, and game engines. His work reclaims virtual environments as spaces for critical design, connection, and immersive storytelling. Is This Episode for You?This episode is for you if: ✅ You're curious about the intersection of architecture and video games ✅ You're an educator thinking about how to evolve studio culture ✅ You're wondering what the future of licensure, pedagogy, or spatial experience might look like ✅ You believe architecture should expand beyond buildings and engage new mediumsWhat have you done to take action lately? With her passion for life, history, and story, Liz Tolsma is the author of several novels ranging from World War II to Amish fiction. While she thought she'd write one book and be done, her debut novel was a finalist for two awards. Now she's a full-time author and editor, and she has never looked back. She joins us today to share about topics close to her heart, and to introduce her latest release, When the Sky Burned. A Word of Inspiration Liz Tolzma's writing journey began much like other authors—at a young age with a vivid imagination and an innate knack for storytelling. Dubbed "Sarah Bernhardt" by her parents due to her flair for drama, Liz was encouraged by a supportive fifth-grade teacher who instilled the dream of becoming a published author. Adoption: A Theme Close to the Heart A big passion for Liz centers around the theme of international adoption. She and her husband have welcomed three children into their family from different corners of the world, embedding rich experiences and diverse cultures into their lives. Liz speaks passionately about how adoption mirrors God's unconditional love and adoption of us, reflecting how it has shaped her as both a mother and a writer. Overlooked History Brought to Life "When the Sky Burned," Liz's latest novel, captures the essence of historical fiction by intertwining real events with an inspiring story. Set against the backdrop of the lesser-known Peshtigo Fire of 1871, Liz carefully balances historical accuracy with the fictional journeys of her characters. Mariah Randolph embodies resilience as she transitions from an artist to a survivor of blindness. Inspired by real stories of blind painters, Liz weaves a narrative that highlights resilience, transformation, and justice. What's Next for Liz Tolsma? Continuing with her theme of stories based on real-life events, Liz is excited to be writing a fictionalized version of a reader's family history from World War II. Readers can connect with her through her website, newsletter, GoodReads, Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest, X, and her own podcast. Enjoy a series of 6 exciting novels featuring historic disasters that transformed landscapes and multiple lives. Whether by nature or by man, these disasters changed history and were a day to be remembered. Promising painter Mariah Randolph longs to have her canvases displayed in the world's best museums, and Hollis Stanford, the heir of a railroad tycoon, is her ticket to success. The railroad's bookkeeper, Jay Franklin, discovers discrepancies and is convinced that Hollis is stealing from the company. But any proof of his dirty dealings go up in smoke when fire utterly destroys the town of Peshtigo, Wisconsin, October 8, 1871. The fire leaves Mariah blind, but Jay befriends her and even helps her to start painting again. But a trip to Chicago to return Hollis's daughter to him could put both Mariah and Jay in more danger than even the fire that devastated the town and their lives. On the morning of August 26, 1986, a cyclist in New York's Central Park discovered the body eighteen-year-old Jennifer Levin. Among other things, Levin had been strangled, there were superficial injuries on her face, and her shirt was pulled up. Later, the medical examiner reported that Jennifer had died only about an hour before she was discovered. It didn't take long for investigators to find Levin's assailant, after several patrons at a nearby bar reported seeing her with a man the night before. That man turned out to be nineteen-year-old Robert Chambers Jr., a privileged members of New York's Upper East Side high society. At first, Chambers denied having anything to do with the murder, but soon changed his story and claimed Levin had died during consensual “rough sex” initiated by Levin herself.Nicknamed the “The Preppy Killer” by the press, a reference to his good looks and obvious privilege, Chambers' trial became a media circus. Over the course of more than a year, people around the country watched as the defense tried—and with the help of the press, succeeded—to put the responsibility for Levin's murder on the victim, emphasizing her sexual history and manner of dress, among other things. It's not the most captivating livestream. Ash Trevino is on the phone with her boyfriend and we, the viewers, are forced to just listen to their seemingly mundane conversations. Out of nowhere, the 36 year old mom of two starts getting angry. She starts screaming - “He's innocent. I don't care what y'all say. He is innocent and y'all are going to see that. My comments are saying RIP to those who lost their lives...” Ash Trevino starts cackling. What is so funny? Is she laughing at the 2 teenage girls her new boyfriend killed? Or is she laughing at all the other victims her other boyfriends in prison have killed? Welcome to the world of Ash Trevino. Dubbed the “inmate hopper” and the “worst mom on TikTok.” The internet is collectively trying to get her accounts closed and are mass reporting her to Child Protective Services.
