Welcome to Sunday worship at Trinity Lutheran Church in Freeland, WA. Receive a word of hope and encouragement from Pastor Tom Kidd, uplifting music from Karl Olsen and friends, and joyful praise.
When I was 18 years old I found myself, accidentally, at a Christian music festival in New Hampshire. It was called the Inside Out Soul Festival. I was invited to a weekend music festival and thought it would be fun. It wasn't until I got there that I realized what I was getting myself into. It was a learning experience for me. It was the first time I had really experienced Christian pop culture and the machinery behind it. All around me I saw people wearing t-shirts with the Taco Bell dog saying 'Yo Quiero Jesus'. I heard music that sounded like the hits I was hearing on the radio, but the messaging in the lyrics was very different. Fast forward a couple of decades and I came across this new book called Jesusland: Stories From the Upside Down World Of Christian Pop Culture. Joelle Kidd has put together a wonderful piece of work that takes us back to her youth in the early 2000's, a time period when Christian pop culture started to really make waves. The book talks a lot about efforts from political figures over the decades to infiltrate communities with specific messaging.I hope you enjoy my conversation with Joelle Kidd.
Not again! Chip Kidd and Michael Cho are the latest comic book creators to find their way, literally, into comics. The Avengers in the Veracity Trap, published as part of the Marvel Arts imprint of Abrams ComicArts, propels the titular superheroes from their dimension into ours, revealing that Kidd and Cho control their free will. The oversized original graphic novel is a stunning-looking comic, thanks to Michael Cho making magic with sequentials, taking a short break from his usual stellar cover work. What is it about comics? Read enough of them, and suddenly you want to be in them. The medium invites invasion, calling folks like Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, Grant Morrison, Brian Michael Bendis, Ta-Nehisi Coates, and others to throw themselves upon the panels. Maybe it's because, as children, we wrap this flatland universe around us like a blanket. It's comfy and protective. It's where we want to go when the third dimension reveals itself as too damn physical with our soft little bodies. Chip Kidd joins the podcast this week to discuss how he once again wormed his way into comic book panels (yeah, this is not his first offense. See also, Batman: Death by Design and Alex Ross's Marvelocity). We discuss how "The Veracity Trap" has become a valuable concept for us personally as we struggle with the strings that direct our movements these days. As usual, the conversation gets philosophical, breaking down free will and the troubled waters between artist and audience. The Avengers in the Veracity Trap is now available wherever rad comics are sold. Make sure you follow Chip Kidd on Instagram. Sermon preached by The Very Rev. Dr. Reggie Kidd on Sunday, September 7, 2025.
In Jesusland (ECW Press, 2025) Joelle Kidd uses a blend of cultural criticism, humor, and personal memoir akin to Jia Tolentino's Trick Mirror or Grace Perry's The 2000s Made Me Gay, Kidd writes about her evangelical adolescence through the lens of Christian pop culture of the early 2000s, giving readers a peek into this odd subculture and insight into how evangelicalism's growing popularity around the turn of the millennium has shaped culture and politics — including today's far right. An empathetic, funny, and sharply critical collection of essays exploring the Christian pop culture of the 2000s and its influence on today's politically powerful evangelicalism In 1999, after three years of secular living in Eastern Europe, Kidd moved back to Canada and was enrolled in the strange world of an evangelical Christian school. In Jesusland, Kidd writes about the Christian pop culture that she was suddenly immersed in, from perky girl bands to modest styling tips, and draws connections between this evangelical subculture and the mainstream, a tense yet reciprocal relationship that both disavows the secular while employing its media markers. But none of this was just about catchy songs: every abstinence quiz in a teen magazine was laying the foundation for what would become a conservative Christian movement that threatens women's healthcare, attacks queer and trans rights, and drives present-day political division. Through nine incisive, honest, and emotional essays, Jesusland exposes the pop cultural machinations of evangelicalism, while giving voice to aughts-era Christian children and teens who are now adults looking back at their time, measuring the length of their skirts, and asking each other if their celebrity crush was Christian enough. With care and generosity, Jesusland shows us how the conservative evangelical movement became the global power it is today by exploring the pop culture that both reflected and shaped an entire generation of young people. Today on Your History Your Story, we're joined by Samuel Marquis, acclaimed author of numerous American history and suspense books, including “Blackbeard: The Birth of America”. Samuel is here to talk about his latest work, “Captain Kidd: A True Story of Treasure and Betrayal”. While many people remember William Kidd as one of history's most notorious pirates, he was in fact a respected privateer, merchant and wartime hero who made his home in colonial New York City in the late 1600's. Samuel—who happens to be Kidd's nine-time great-grandson—shares the real story of a man far more complex than legend suggests and who ultimately became a scapegoat for powerful political forces.Music: "With Loved Ones" Jay Man Photo(s): Courtesy of Samuel MarquisThank you for supporting Your History Your Story!YHYS Patreon: CLICK HERE YHYS PayPal: CLICK HEREYHYS: Stay in the know, join our mailing list: CLICK HERE YHYS: Website, Blog & Social: CLICK HERE#yhys #yourhistoryyourstory #history #storytelling #podcast #njpodcast #youhaveastorytoo #jamesgardner #historian #storyteller #blogger To purchase "Captain Kidd": CLICK HERE

In the seas off Madagascar, Nova Scotia and even Connecticut, the siren call of buried riches has lured treasure hunters and adventurers over many a century. Many seek the wealth Capt. Kidd accrued during years of pirating and then had to hide when his arrest was imminent. In popular lore, Capt. Kidd's name is synonymous with the fearsome, ruthless privateers of the pirate age. But the truth about William Kidd is more nuanced — and interesting. Historian Samuel Marquis, who is also William Kidd's ninth great-grandson, writes in his new biography of Kidd: Though the real Capt. Kidd would have loathed being labeled as one of the most notorious villains of all time, he would have delighted at being a continuing hot topic of conversation for over 300 years and counting.Marquis' previous books include “Blackbeard: The Birth of America.” His new book is “Captain Kidd: A True Story of Treasure and Betrayal,” and he joins Kerri Miller on this week's Big Books and Bold Ideas to sort reality from the scuttlebutt when it comes to the age of pirates.Guest:Samuel Marquis is a historian and author. In this episode of The Other Half podcast, the boys and HoneyBees watched the final Roger Moore movie, A View to a Kill! Roger Moore would have gone out with a bang, but he's completely overshadowed by Mayday, played by Grace Jones. Even the actual Bond girl in this movie is but a BLIP in the marketing artwork. Grace Jones is just that good. Pair her with Christopher Walken and you've got yourself one of the best pairs of villains you can find in a Bond film. Well, at least since Mr. Wint and Mr. Kidd! But how is it actually as a movie? Is the plot good? Are the action scenes compelling? We get into all of this in more detail in one of our longest episodes for the podcast EVER!Don't forget to join our Discord for movie nights and additional podcast discussions!Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-other-half/exclusive-contentAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
