This is a reboot of Episode 20, recorded in 2018 with my dear friend, Brian Enos. He published a new book on July 17th, 2024 so I figured it would be a nice means of sharing some of the history of the NonProphet podcast (formerly known as The Dissect Podcast) and helping listeners understand why they might very well be interested in the new book titled, "Practical Living". You may learn a bit more about the book by surfing to the Journal section of the NonProphet site. In the first mobile recording of the Dissect podcast, Mark sits down with friend and mentor, Brian Enos, to talk about shooting, Zen, temperament, road tripping, psychedelics and thinking about how to think. Brian is the author of “Practical Shooting — Beyond Fundamentals”. It is considered one of the best books on the subject, and certainly the deepest. During his career, he won multiple Area and National titles and despite this success—or maybe because of it—one day he quit cold turkey, which also comes up during the conversation.

After a chance meeting while coaching young athletes I stayed in touch with Eric Bostrom for two reasons. First, he had a clean energy. I know that sounds pretty damn woo-woo, but as I've gotten older I've just learned to trust my gut more when it comes to meeting people.   Eric was soft spoken but from the moment I met him there was an obvious intensity to him. That leads to the second reason: He was a champion motorcycle racer. You don't get to be a champion by being unfocused, and God knows I love the folks who can dial in focus to the white hot intensity of a thousand burning suns.   Getting on a motorcycle (for me) represents the fastest way to transition from the normal humdrum of life into an experience that puts you at mortal peril. One minute you're straddling an inert piece of metal and plastic in front of your house, the next you're in traffic, whipping along at speeds humans just weren't meant to attain, surrounded by heavy and fast beasts that basically don't notice or care whether you exist. Bloody dangerous, and open to anyone crazy enough to swing a leg over and twist the throttle.   Racing motorcycles is a few steps further, and something I've always thought far too dangerous for me.   Eric is one of those guys who raced at a bunch of levels, who chased victory hard for years because that's how he paid the bills, and who squeaked through the injury cycle of professional motorsports and out the other side with a combination of skill and luck. On that far side of competition he created a solution for the neck and back pain that had come from the crashing, dings, and dents that are a part of hurtling through space with basically no protection.   At the end of the show we talk about the Backmate, which we use at the Paleo Treats office. Not only does the thing work and provide relief, it stands as a shining example of how to ROCK a Kickstarter campaign.   You'll notice some common themes with Eric and Brian Enos. Competition forces you to get better. The more skilled you become, the better you are at listening to your environment. You don't need to try harder to go faster, you need to think better.   Enjoy the convo, and for all the show notes & links, sign up at the Deep Diver level at nikhawks.com   Cheers, NFH

What does it take to shoot a pistol faster than pretty much anyone else in the world? Mastery over awareness and attention. Whether you're a pistol wizard or a paraglider pilot, this show goes deep into how to improve at anything you do.   Brian Enos is a well known pistol shooter who quit competing after 20 years of winning at all levels. He built a website with one of the most trafficked forums on the web for competitive pistol shooters and ran that for 17 years, then stopped cold turkey to focus solely on his own ability to pay attention to the moment and be aware and connected.   This is a rad dive into what it's like to truly pay attention. Enjoy!

Brian Enos is considered to be one of most critical thinkers in the realm of handgun shooting.  In 1990 he wrote the book (link below) "Practical Shooting: Beyond Fundamentals" which is the collection of over ten years of notes and ideas Brian had regarding pistol shooting and competition. Brian was raised in Ohio but moved to Arizona to work at the State Prison where he first learned about shooting competitions.  Soon the bug of shooting hit him and he shot a PPC (Police Practical Combat) match and then he quickly moved to IPSC competitions.  At his first match he met Rob Leatham and they became friends and training partners.  The two dominated the local and state matches and then they went national shooting Steel Challenge.  Brian's journey continued and he realized he enjoyed a different kind of match such as the Bianchi Cup, The Masters and the Sportsman's Team Challenge.  He won the Bianchi Cup in 1983 and 1984 and the Masters in 1989 plus he was a five time member of the Sportsman's Team Challenge National championship.  He also qualified for the US Gold Team for IPSC multiple years. Brian was a sponsored shooter for many years but in 1991 he left his sponsors and Bianchi Cup matches for the new USPSA and it's new Limited Division.  He shot USPSA and Steel Challenge until 2000 and then won multiple Area and National championships.  In the year 2000 he retired from competition and built a website and forum (Enos Forum) which is the largest competitive shooting forum on the internet. Brian also developed a gun lubricant "Slide-Glide" which has the ability to stay on parts and protect firearms from wear and corrosion.  It also softens felt recoil in pistols. Randy Lee is the president and gunsmith at Apex Tactical, a company that specializes in gun parts for pistols.  Apex took off when they introduced a replacement sear for the Smith and Wesson M&P pistol line which made those gun shoot much better with a better trigger pull.  From that moment on, Apex Tactical was always the go to part for any M&P and now Glock, CZ and even FN.  Apex further their skills by releasing a “Apex Grade” barrel for the M&P which is capable of a sub inch group at 25 yards! What I learned from Randy was: Flat triggers can help you with your trigger pull 2) that adjustable rear sights can be used for every day carry and 3) Apex Tactical is working on their own HANDGUN!  I can't wait to see what that will look and shoot like.  Congrats Randy… Links mentioned in the episode: www.apextactical.com Also, great news!
