Alexander agreed, and later emigrated to Australia where he lived to a ripe old age, dying in 1881.Unfortunately, Donald only lived until 1847. It is believed that he died after falling into a vat of partially-made whisky.Donald's only heir was his son, Dugald. At just 11 years old, he was too young to take over, so the distillery was looked after by his uncle, John Johnston, and a local farmer, Peter McIntyre.War raged between Mackie and Co, the blenders for Laphroaig, and the owners of Laphroaig from 1857-1921 Laphroaig firing Mackie and Co because they thought they were too big Several court casesMackie and Co blocking the water supply for LaphroaigMackie attempts to learn how to make Laphroaig to recreate it and sabotage it. In this episode of Bourbon With Friends. The team is on Islay at Lagavulin Distillery. We started the day in the barrelhouse with distillery icon Ian McArthur getting 17 and 25 year Lagavulin straight from the barrel! After an amazing tour, we sit down with distillery manager Jordan Paisley. Founded on Islay's south [Kildalton] coast and situated between Ardbeg and Laphroaig, legal distilling was started at Lagavulin in 1816 by John Johnston. A second distillery shared the site which was first bought by the same family in 1825, before production was absorbed into Lagavulin in 1837.It came to wider public awareness in 1862 when blender John Logan Mackie bought the distillery. His nephew Peter J. Mackie made the first of many trips to Islay in 1878 to learn the secrets of distilling and eventually take over production of Lagavulin. Sir Peter Mackie, as he became, was one of the pre-eminent figures of late 19th century whisky. He created the White Horse blend in 1890, co-founded Craigellachie distillery and was noted as a great innovator. In 1908, irritated by the loss of the agency for Laphroaig, Mackie built a replica distillery at Lagavulin which he called Malt Mill. It ran until 1962 and though it was set up to produce the same character as Laphroaig – which is only two miles away – it never did. Neither did it make Lagavulin. A (fictitious) cask of Malt Mill played a central role in film director Ken Loach's comedy The Angel's Share. The distillery floor maltings shut in 1974. They now form the visitor's centre and admin offices.Check out our sponsors!Kentucky Eagle INC. - Kentucky Eagle is growing and in need of talented people with a passion for wine and spirits. Mickey Mouse takes the front of the stage on EP89 with a business diagram that looks at Collaboration (face) Content (right ear) and Communications (left ear). The model identifies the core functionality of Content, Collaboration & Communication with the key tools being Exchange, SharePoint Online and MS Teams.Steve uses the word Personae and Marijn wonders if he is ill. Steve has not always been a believer in the default view about personae but in this podcast, he explains that like a complex whisky there is value in personae when the audience value is understood. He goes on to explain this is described as Focused Usability where the Personae has the Desire (aka ADKAR) because you have identified the specific value they will get from MS Teams or SharePoint Online when combined with Exchange. Collaboration, Content and CommunicationsThe example discussed is to only allow the personae who need sites to have the rights to create sites. And right in the middle of this Steve's mother calls, Wendy Barks and Marijn must drag us back to his golden nugget from this week's podcast!!Marijn re-iterates the value in NOT giving everyone the rights to create sites… for example not having to train the personae who do not have rights to create sites.Viva Insights tells Steve that he responds quickly to emails and Marijn asks if that is a thing… then they get to discuss what you can do in 6 minutes! The conclusion is that defining policies around when to use a Site, Group, MS team or yammer group depends on the business need. However, this is a variable in that the personae obtain different values from the M365 toolset depending on the Baseline governance that drives each of the services. If you get the Awareness and governance by Personae right, you are already halfway to setting up the Desire by identifying the value in the product. The boys drink the Lagavulin 8-year-old created to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the founding of the Lagavulin distillery by John Johnston in 1816… and they like it a lot!!
Labour leader Keir Starmer issues a strongly-worded attack on the Prime Minister's character in an interview with Political Editor Adam Payne. Starmer insists that he has “nothing in common” with Boris Johnson as he questions the Prime Minister's integrity and ability to lead the country at a time of crisis. He addresses the row over LGBT+ rights playing out across Westminster, accusing the government of “weaponising” vulnerable people for their own political gains. Starmer also issues pointed remarks about Labour's previous leadership and insists that the party has made significant progress “given what I inherited as leader of a party”. Starmer's timely interview coincides with a fresh crop of scandal in Downing Street after Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak received fines from police over 'partygate' events. Payne discusses what this means for Johnson and Sunak's future in Downing Street with political reporters Eleanor Langford and John Johnston, and what they've been hearing in Westminster since the news dropped. The Rundown is presented by Eleanor Langford with Adam Payne and John Johnston. The editor is Laura Silver. Produced and edited by Nick Hilton for Podot.

Himrod Farm Supply is our local farm shop near the winery. It’s run by some of our local Mennonites, and considering its rather small footprint, always seems to have everything we need for the vineyard and the winery. Whenever you visit, you’re bound to run into someone you know. Last week, I ran into a friend who is a vineyard manager, someone I hope to bring on the show in our second season, and we were discussing the vintage so far. We shared the fact that with some varietals, we are well ahead of last year. We also shared some of the frustrations with the increasing disease pressure, specifically powdery mildew. Warm temperatures and high humidity are the key ingredients for its spread. Powdery mildew is actually a fungus, and spread by spores that seek out the living tissue, generally the leaves this time of year, to spread and propagate. Aptly named, powdery mildew leaves a white fungus on the leaves, and will ultimately damage the leaf tissue. This is problematic, because it will inhibit photosynthesis and ultimately impact grape development. The increase in pressure is giving some growers flashbacks to 2018, that most challenging of vintages, where heat and moisture were at record levels and resulted in an incredible amount of difficulty in the vineyards. Speaking of heat and growing degree day accumulation, as of July 5, we are currently at 1047.6 growing degree days. As usual, we try to put that in context by looking at some past vintages. For the same date in 2020, we were at 990.1. In 2019, we had only clocked 886, and in the warm dry vintage of 2016, we were also at 934. Recalling the zombie apocalypse vintage of 2018, we were at 1105. We continue to skew slightly warmer than usual. Our ten day outlook is showing temperatures continuing to teeter between the mid 70’s and mid 80’s, but with increases in the number of days with rain. One thing I learned very quickly when I moved to the Finger Lakes from California, was the saying that if you don’t like the weather, wait five minutes. Oftentimes, forecasts for rain do not mean we will have precipitation all day. Rather, storms will work their way through the region, dropping a quarter to a half an inch of rain and then returning to sunnier conditions. This is one of the reasons drain tile is so important in the Finger Lakes. To recap, drain tile is essentially perforated pipe, strategically placed throughout the vineyard and draining to a main line that then ejects the excess water into a naturally draining location. Several things are important with regard to this.First drain tile really helps evacuate that excess moisture, resulting in the ability to get back into the vineyard to work quickly. In years like this, it is important that we are able to reenter the vineyard with a tractor as quickly as possible so that we can apply sprays to combat powdery mildew. It’s also important for the vines, because, as we say, vines hate wet feet.Consequently, drain tile must be installed in a manner that allows you to draw as much excess water out of the vineyard as possible. In this shot from our vineyard, you can see how we installed the drain tile in a manner that helps the water drain at an angle, down hill, into the main line. As stewards of the land, we also must recognize that the water we drain from our vineyards will end up in Seneca Lake, as we are on the watershed for the lake. This increases our responsibility to farm in a manner that is lake conscious, and considerate of our environment. Excess nutrients, particularly nitrogen and phosphorus, can contribute to nutrient imbalances in the lakes that will foster the growth of algaes that are dangerous for aquatic and human life. Many people who live around the lake get their drinking water from the lake, and we always need to be sure we are protecting this resource. Like so many technologies, whether they be cement or aqueducts, the ancient Romans actually invented drain tile, but the knowledge wasn’t applied in the US until the 19th century. A quick reference of the Wikipedia page on drain tile, note that Both Cato the Elder and Pliny the Elder reference drain tile for easing excess water on farmland as early as 200 BC. It was introduced in the US in 1838, by John Johnston, not too far from here in Seneca County, where he laid 72 miles of clay tiling pipe on 350 acres. His efforts increased his yield of wheat from 12 to 60 bushels per year, and became part of his three pronged rule for farming success, D-C-D, or dung, credit, and drainage. Drain tile is another feature of Finger Lakes grape growing that isn’t as common in warmer grape growing regions. In my ten years in the Finger Lakes, there has only been one vintage where we were really concerned about drought. Most of the time, the problem is excess water, and all the issues that stem from that. Jane Johnston Schoolcraft is the first known American Indian literary writer, the first known Indian woman writer, the first known Indian poet, and the first known poet to write poems in a Native American language. A poet who wrote in at least two languages, navigated several cultures and expressed her pride of belonging to the Ojibwe (Chippewa) people in both English and Ojibwe poems, Jane Johnston Schoolcraft invites us to reconsider existing categories for understanding American and American Indian literacy. Schoolcraft (her English name) or Bamewawagezhikaquay (her Ojibwe name, meaning “Woman of the Sound the Stars Make Rushing Through the Sky”), was born as one of eight children in 1800 in Sault Ste. Marie in today’s state of Michigan, then a cross-cultural hub of British, French, Canadian and American Indian influence. Her mother, Ozhaguscodaywayquay, was born in Chequamegon in the mid 1770s in the northern part of what is now Wisconsin as the daughter of Waubojeeg, a renowned Ojibwe warrior and chief also known for his skills in story-telling and son; her Irish-born father, John Johnston was a fur trader who greatly valued books. Jane was educated at home, reading widely and speaking and writing Ojibwe, English and French, with a brief and difficult interlude with an aunt in Ireland where she might have attended school. In 1823 she married Henry Rowe Schoolcraft (1793-1864), who has become known as the first person to record a large body of American Indian stories. They had three children but their first-born, William Henry, died at age two, and one daughter was stillborn. With Jane’s assistance Henry published The Literary Voyager or Muzzenyegun, which included some of Jane’s writings without attribution. When Jane died unexpectedly in 1842, she had written literary prose pieces and poems, only a small number of which had appeared in a handwritten magazine produced by her husband. I spoke with Professor Robert Dale Parker of the University of Illinois, who discovered, edited and published Jane Johnston Schoolcraft's poetry in The Sound the Stars Make Rushing Through the Sky: The Writings of Jane Johnston Schoolcraft, as well as Changing is not Vanishing: A Collection of American Indian Poetry to 1930, in addition to books on Faulkner, and on critical theory. We talked about the ambiguous status of being "the first," about Native American poetry, about Jane's life, and about several of her moving, searing and strangely timely poems. Her beautiful poem, "Sweet Willy," was recorded in a gorgeous rendition by Dave Stanaway and Susan Askwith; they graciously granted permission to use this song here to bring Schoolcraft's poetry to an ever wider audience. ** "Sweet Willy, My Boy · Dave Stanaway and Susan Askwith · John Johnston: His Life and Times in the Fur Trade Era ℗ 2005 Dave Stanaway and Susan Askwith Released on: 2005-01-01 (Song consent to be used on "Think About It Podcast" by Dave Stanaway and Susan Askwith on November 25th, 2020 by email to Ulrich Baer) ** /////////////// Follow us: TWITTER - @ulibaer INSTAGRAM - @uli.baer (THINK ABOUT IT PODCAST) - @thinkaboutit.podcast ROBERT DALE PARKER - @robertdaleparker //////////////// Listen to the Podcast on: APPLE PODCASTS - Think About It Podcast SPOTIFY - Think About It Podcast YOUTUBE: Ulrich Baer //////////////// Thanks for listening! :)

In 1820, exactly two hundred years ago, with the signing of The Treaty of Doak’s Stand, more than five million acres of Choctaw ancestral land in what is now Madison, County, MS was ceded to the United States. As a result, white planters flocked to the area forcing thousands of enslaved black people to migrate with them often leaving family members behind. A number of those planters originated in Bertie County, NC including John Johnston, who migrated there in 1820 and brought with him his body servant, who was her third paternal great grandfather, an enslaved man named March. Other planters from Bertie followed including Noah B. Hinton who brought with him over one hundred and twenty enslaved people among whom were Habeus and Mary, her great, great maternal grandparents. Freddi Williams Evans is a native of Madison, MS located in Madison County, and she resides in New Orleans. She is internationally recognized for her scholarship on historic Congo Square and is the author of Congo Square: African Roots in New Orleans, the first comprehensive study of the location, which received the 2012 Louisiana Humanities Book of the Year Award and is published in French. Her research and advocacy influenced the 2011 New Orleans City Council Ordinance that made the popular name “Congo Square” the official name of the location. Evans is also the author of three picture books: Hush Harbor - Praying in Secret, The Battle of New Orleans: The Drummer’s Story, and A Bus of Our Own.
Mary Lincoln's domestic life often involved working as a single parent and managing tight finances while her husband was out making a living. Both parents were devoted to their children, and faced devastation when their son Eddie became sick in late 1849. Less than a year later, Abraham Lincoln made a fateful choice when he received word that his father Thomas was ill.

This week on Micro Monday, we have our first Scottish guest. John Johnston is a primary school teacher who lives in Glasgow. We talk about the signal-to-noise ratio on social media and what makes Micro.blog a great experience. I’ve learned more about the tone of online conversation on Micro.blog than anywhere else. Even if there isn’t a community of teachers talking about education all the time, even people are talking about something I’m not desperately interested in, you can enjoy it because of the tone.
