Before covering Ohio State's 17-14 win over Notre Dame last week, Stephen Means and Andrew Gillis stopped to watch five-star wide receiver commit Mylan Graham. So on this Friday episode of Buckeye Talk, the two discuss what they saw or didn't see. Then they wrap things up with a conversation about the future of OSU's wide receiver room which could lose its top four players after the 2023 season leaving room for anyone to claim a starting spot next season. That includes the three commits in the 2024 class the latest highly-rate recruits Brian Hartline has landed. Thanks for listening to Buckeye Talk. Learn more about your ad choices. There's always so much news to get to as the season's about to start. With so much to discuss, we started this week's show with the bad news first. Two Buckeyes will not see the field in 2023 — tight end Bennett Christian, because of testing positive for a banned substance, and linebacker Kourt Williams II, with torn ACL. We wish both players the best of luck in getting back on the field. In better news, Ohio State named its 2023 captains, and we couldn't be more pleased with the choices. We discussed why Cade Stover, Tommy Eichenberg, and Xavier Johnson were the perfect choices and why it's good to put the rotating captain nonsense in the rearview mirror.Johnson also earned the right to wear the Block O jersey this upcoming season, and that was also the perfect choice. The only thing that might be more appropriate is if they let him wear an X on his jersey. There was a slew of new black stripe removals, including several freshman receivers. Brian Hartline just keeps getting standout talent. As an aside, we discuss OSU commit Air Noland's first game of the season in a big early-season matchup and Michael gives an unscientific scouting report. Finally, we made our predictions for how the Big Ten East will shake out by the end of the 2023 season. While we were in lockstep a week ago with our B1G West picks, there were multiple variations this week that should make things interesting as we watch how the season unfolds. Ohio State fans will be rooting for Chip to be more correct than Michael on this one. We'll be here with you every week from now until the end of the 2023 Ohio State football season. Or why would Coach Day not announce who will be QB1 for the Buckeyes week one against Indiana? And most importantly... How long will this "QB Battle" drag on and what will the residual impact be of not making the decision and preparing your starting Quarterback for the Season? The three certainties of life are death, taxes ... and Brian Hartline landing quality wide receiver recruits. Ohio State's offensive coordinator struck again on Sunday when the Buckeyes received a commitment from Jeremiah McClellan, who is ranked as the No. 17 WR in the country in the 2024 class by 247Sports. Ohio State also has commitments from the No. 1 WR (Jeremiah Smith) and the No. 6 WR (Mylan Graham) in the country, who are both 5-star prospects. Dan Rubin and Dave Biddle discuss the latest get for Hartline, then delve into the hot topics from OSU's preseason practices with the opener just 19 days away. What has stood out to us the most? What is the concern level with the offensive line? Is Ryan Day on the verge of naming a starting quarterback? Could Carnell Tate unseat Julian Fleming? Should Ohio State and Michigan actually be ranked ahead of Georgia and Alabama given the questions at quarterback for the latter two programs? Doug Lesmerises and Bill Landis discuss what they saw on the first day of Ohio State camp, how the play calling structure between Ryan Day and Brian Hartline might work, update the quarterback battle between Kyle McCord and Devin Brown, get into new roles for Sonny Styles and Luke Montgomery and theorize on how OSU might use its deep running backs stable on this episode of Kings of Columbus.
Ohio State will open up fall camp on Thursday as it starts preparation for the 2023 season. While quarterback is the most interesting topic for the Buckeyes on offense as they replace C.J. Stroud, it's not the other player where there are questions. Stephen Means and Nathan Baird discuss OSU's offense and some things they're interested to find out about. As part of the discussion: Things start with a discussion about what's happening on the recruiting trail where the Buckeyes spent the past five days getting both good and bad news across multiple classes. What will the offensive line look like on Day 1 and how will it evolve over the next month? Cade Stover is the starting tight end. But in a room with six scholarship players is there legitimate depth behind him? Brian Hartline returns all three starting wide receivers while a battle carries on behind them. Can anyone start making headway to be a starter in 2024? With five talented options, how will Tony Alford handle things in the running back room? Thanks, as always, for listening to Buckeye Talk. We are back and there's plenty of off-season news to discuss. We sadly open with some remarks about the loss of Carnell Tate's mother and we send our condolences to all of her friends and family. In lighter news, we discuss Ohio State's all-gray alternate uniforms that are planned for this year's Michigan State matchup. We are traditionalists but we can still appreciate a good-looking alternate whenever those appear. Our consensus is that we like the gray ones but we also have thoughts on Ohio State's traditional uniforms that would make them better (again). We looked ahead to Big Ten Media Days and discussed the things we're eager to see when that event gets underway this week. What will Ryan Day have to say? Will things finally calm down for Northwestern? What will the new coaches have to say? Linebacker recruit Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa committed to Notre Dame over OSU. Is Ohio State doing enough on the defensive side of the ball when it comes to recruiting? Is there a defensive Brian Hartline out there somewhere? Finally, we discussed the Northwestern hazing scandal, how it has already affected the Wildcats, and what might happen in the future. We already weren't very high on Northwestern's chances in 2023, but will the Cats have a fighting chance (or any fight at all) without Fitz? This situation will bear watching. We'll be back next month, or possibly sooner if news warrants, as we remain in our offseason broadcast schedule. We'll return to our weekly format in August as we ramp up for the 2023 Ohio State football season. Coach Ryan Day and the OSU Buckeyes have 2 super stars in Brian Hartline's receiver room. Marvin Harrison Jr. and Emeka Egbuka are unanimously ranked as the #1 and #2 WRs in the country BUT... Could they stake the claim as the best duo EVER? Could they have a year that surpasses some of the great tandems we have seen, most notably LSU Tiger pair Justin Jefferson and Ja'Marr Chase? New offensive coordinator Brian Hartline will be taking over as the primary play-caller for Ohio State this fall. Kevin joins host Tom Orr to discuss what he learned about each of the three top prospects:2024 CB Aaron Scott, a lockdown defender who is set to announce his college decision at the end of the month.2025 CB Dorian Brew, whose recruitment is shaping up to be a battle of some of the top programs in the midwest2026 WR Chris Henry, Jr., the son of former NFL standout Chris Henry, who is already a top target for Ohio State and Brian Hartline. This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/5626222/advertisement
On this Mark It Down Monday, the statistical prediction is a little more complicated. Doug Lesmerises, Nathan Baird and Stephen Means aren't looking at an individual stat -- they are marking down what percent of plays for the 2023 Ohio State Buckeyes will be pass plays, and how many will be run plays. To do that, they look at run-pass OSU percentages of the recent past; they compare the OSU passing game to other successful throwing teams like Washington and Tennessee; and they wonder how much Brian Hartline calling plays, the presence of a quarterback competition and other factors will affect the run-pass balance. And then they mark it down. Thanks as always for listening to Buckeye Talk from cleveland.com. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
We're back with another conversation about Ohio State WR Marvin Harrison Jr and Emeka Egbuka. It should be no surprise that Ohio State is on the verge of have two wide receivers drafted in the NFL Draft. Brian Hartline consistently does a great job recruiting and developing elite receivers. That's evident with the way Harrison Jr and Egbuka dominate on the football field. During today's show, Jay Stephens welcomes Ryan Roberts back to the show. Brian Hartline has made a name for himself by identifying elite wide receivers early, and building his position group with the best classes in the nation year after year. Now, Hartline and the Ohio State Buckeyes may have zeroed in on another incredible talent, this time for the class of 2025. Marc Givler of BuckeyeHuddle.com spent the weekend at the Under Armour Future 50 camp, watching some of the nation's top juniors go head-to-head, including WR Naeshaun Montgomery. So what makes Montgomery such an incredible prospect, and where does Ohio State stand in his recruitment?Marc joins host Tom Orr to answer that question and much more, including:An elite 2025 edge rusher from Georgia who is very interested in the BuckeyesAnother look at the top running back in the class, and when he could be back in ColumbusWhether the Buckeyes could end up taking two quarterbacks in the 2025 classAnd much moreThis show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/5626222/advertisement
On today's episode of “Buck Off with Christopher Renne,” I'm joined by Jordan Williams to discuss all the news surrounding Ohio State recruiting and other fun stories from around the country. To get the show started, we get into the future Chip Trayanum propaganda that will be on this podcast from here on out. Then we turn to Ohio State's 2025 quarterback commitment and the next steps after Tavien St. Clair announced his commitment to the Buckeyes. After that, we turn our attention to official visits in college football, and why they are now a meaningless indicator in recruiting. There should be less worry about elite recruits taking visits, they are allowed to take as many as schools are willing to offer. Plus on the player Ohio State fans are most concerned about, there is no reason to carry that concern as long as Brian Hartline is employed. We return from the break with a game called Ohio State versus the field. In this game we are predicting if certain Ohio State recruiting prospects are going to be Buckeyes or choose to go to school somewhere else. After the game we read off the worst coach rankings of all time, and we get into why seeing the Titanic at the bottom of the ocean is a terrible idea to begin with. Brian Hartline's promotion to offensive coordinator is one numerous people predicted. His ability to recruit and develop elite wide receivers made Hartline a wanted man during every offseason. The promotion came during an offseason where the Buckeyes are searching for a new starting quarterback. Ryan Day's experience can help Brian Hartline work with a new signal caller. During today's episode, Jay Stephens discusses how Ryan Day can help Brian Hartline adapt the offense to the quarterbacks strengths. Come for the hot takes, stay for the warm ones. On this episode of Hangout in the Holy Land, Josh and Chuck embrace LGHL's weekly theme of What If, as they boldly look toward the future. The guys hit you with a bunch of ‘what if' scenarios and discuss potential outcomes, whether good or bad for Scarlet and Gray fans. Is there any chance whatsoever that Ryan Day and his Ohio State football staff produce a dud (instead of a dude) at quarterback? If so, are the Buckeyes toast in 2023 and potentially even 2024? Will Jim Knowles (ever) replicate his Oklahoma State magic with better players in Columbus? And would that make OSU a championship contender, regardless of QB play? And what does the future look like for both Ryan Day and Brian Hartline? What if they are destined for greatness elsewhere? Ohio State assistant coaches Brian Hartline, Corey Dennis, Tony Alford and Perry Eliano joined Austin Ward to talk about football and anything else on the latest edition of THE Podcast Daily.
From now until preseason camp starts in August, Land-Grant Holy Land will be writing articles around a different theme every week. This week is all about players to watch this upcoming season. You can catch up on all of the Theme Week content here and all of our ”Player to Watch” articles here. On today's episode of “Buck Off with Christopher Renne,” I'm joined by Jordan Williams to get into real science versus fake science, and why you have to look at both. To get the show started, we get into Mickey Marrotti's lack of accountability and why the issues in the sports science side are due to lack of listening to basic science. After that we get into the other questionable coach on staff, Parker Fleming and the specialists conversation. After that, we turn our attention to the offensive side of the ball and get into what the coaches said to the media this week. We talk about Brian Hartline's comfort level, Tony Alford's talented room, Justin Frye's goals this year as well as the offensive line competition, and Corey Dennis talking quarterbacks. We close out the offensive side with our players to watch. We return from the break with a discussion about the defensive coaching staffs media availability. This conversation includes talk about Larry Johnson's group needing consistency, Jim Knowles being haunted, Tim Walton's mature cornerback room, and what we expect from the young five stars. We then get into our defensive players to watch. To close out the show, we finish with our final thoughts on both sides of the ball and make the easiest NBA Finals prediction in years. #204. We're back! Kory, out of character, tried a plant-based restaurant while he was in (or on) the island of Manhattan and we discuss our reactions; both to the idea of such a place and his experience. On the flip side of that patty, Dillon broke in his new outdoor griddle (much more in-character)! And since Kory is still hungry after horticulture cuisine, we end up talking about what we hope is a tongue-in-cheek midwestern charcuterie board. For dessert: all natural fruit bars. Remember last week's story when Dillon scared the crap out of Ohio State's Offensive Coordinator? Will, it seems the Hubbell haunting of Brian Hartline has continued. And after all the food and chance encounters, we wind down with what we're streaming. This week we discuss Beef, Schmigadoon, A Man Called Otto, and John Wick: Chapter 4. It's time for a break from OSU-Michigan talk, as Doug Lesmerises, Nathan Baird and Stephen Means get back to rapid fire questions about everything related to Ohio State football on this Saturday edition of Buckeye Talk. First up, (0:30), who do the guys list as their stars of spring football? Then (13:38) it's suggesting one thing they would change about Ohio State football. Next (23:00) is a deep discussion about whether Ohio should have spring football in high school and what it would mean for the Buckeyes. Then (41:14) the fallout from Brian Hartline's UTV accident is discussed, and what it might mean for Hartline and the Buckeyes, and how Ryan Day might handle it. Next (57:35) is the ongoing discussion about offensive line options in the transfer portal. Finally (1:02:20), would an OSU-UM national title game overwhelm the rest of the rivalry? Happy Friday! We've talked too much sports this week, the NFL has suspended some players for gambling, college football timing rules are changing, CJ may be a bad test taker, Ryan Day comments on Brian Hartline, Bone's not familiar with Peter Gabriel & we do Tool of the Week.
Coach Ryan Day will host the Ohio State Buckeyes annual Spring Game Saturday and several questions need answered for the 2023 College Football Season. Will Kyle McCord be the starter at QB and, more importantly, if he is... Will he be any good? What is the answer at Right Tackle for Brian Hartline's offense? Who will be Jim Knowles' 2nd CB opposite Denzel Burke? We will find some hints to those answers tomorrow! MENACE MERCH!!! https://menace2merch.com/ MANSCAPED: 20% OFF with FREE SHIPPING! On this Tuesday Buckeye Talk from cleveland.com, sorry that it got up late, but blame the podcast company for screwing up the audio files. But Doug Lesmerises, Nathan Baird and Stephen Means are here to discuss their conversations with Ohio State defensive coordinator Jim Knowles and offensive coordinator Brian Hartline on Tuesday. Knowles has an idea for how young players can impress him. Hartline has an idea on how we should view, for now, the play-calling changeover. It's mostly Knowles for the first part, until about the 50:46 mark, and then it's Hartline to wrap up. Thanks for listening to Buckeye Talk from cleveland.com. Learn more about your ad choices.
