We saw the introduction of Broderick Jones in Dallas yesterday after the Steelers sent him there via trade Saturday night in exchange for a 3rd and 6th round pick. The Steelers also sent a 4th rounder to the Cowboys. Jones didn't mince words – he said the Steelers screwed him up. Jones did a lot of moving around in his time here because the coaching staff pandered to Dan Moore time and time again. Is he right? The guys pointed out some recent Steelers that have gone elsewhere and thrived, to a degree. Names like Kevin Dotson and Devin Bush come to mind. That used to never be the case. Poni had a dog analogy to relate to the Steelers… but it never really did. Oh well. Former NFL QB Ben DiNucci from CBS Sports joined the show. Ben played under Mike McCarthy and was the perfect guy to ask about Big Mike keeping 4 QBs on the Steelers 53-man roster. Ben was the QB3 in his first year under McCarthy and he mostly stood around at practice until injuries forced him into the fire. So, what will it look like with 4 guys? Ben expects Aaron Rodgers to get a ton of reps as a guy who never really takes a practice off. Ben thinks McCarthy will still be the main coach for the QBs and it's not just an off-season thing. Ben said he didn't see any glaring things that Will Howard did in the preseason that was better than Drew Allar. Ben understands Will's position as a fellow late-round pick that hung around the league for a few years. Ben wondered if the room will still have 4 active QBs next week or long into the season. Ben talked about the open mind young QBs need to have and why that may explain his reasoning to keep all 4. How does Ben view Mason Rudolph as the team's backup QB? Ben said a ton by not saying anything about Matt Canada coaching him at Pitt.

Brooke also expects Eli Heidenreich to be on the chopping block if the team can't find a way to use him on game days. Brooke thought the Elandon Roberts cut was a surprise and she would be additionally surprised if he isn't back on the roster in the next few weeks. Brooke said both sides are frustrated in the Joey Porter Jr. contract negotiations, but she isn't sounding the alarm yet because we have seen contracts come down to the wire before. We're recording late, dads' bedtime late, and we start with a quick shoutout to Mel Blunt's golf tournament and the Mel Blunt Youth Home before getting into the real question: what actually matters after a turnover-heavy night with no points on the board? We break down the biggest Week 2 takeaways across all three phases. On special teams, we're excited about what the punter can do with placement and distance, and we're honest about the kicker concerns. On offense, we talk about why the Dowdle and Warren pairing could become a real engine for the run game, play action, and screens, and why the offensive line needs time to gel before we draw hard conclusions. Then we go deep on the quarterback competition. Ben walks through what he saw from Will Howard beyond the two interceptions, including how a safety look can bait a young QB and how route details like a receiver “stair step” can change the outcome. We also unpack Drew Allar's flashes, from arm strength to mobility to ball security under pressure, and why protection and drops can skew any preseason evaluation. We wrap by looking ahead to Buffalo and explaining why flipping the reps could give the cleanest QB2 read.If you're following the Steelers preseason and want analysis that's calmer than hot takes but still honest, hit subscribe, share the show with a friend, and leave a review. August 22, 2026 - Season 17, Episode 12 of The Terrible Podcast is now in the can. In this Saturday morning show, Ross McCorkle sits in for Alex Kozora and we start things off by talking loosely about the Pittsburgh Steelers preseason loss to the New York Jets Friday night. Ross and I go over the long list of players that sat out the Steelers second preseason game and why. Ross and I then start getting into our deeper dive of Pittsburgh's shutout loss to the Jets on Friday night and we begin with going over the play of the offensive line and the positional rotations that we both observed. We discuss how Dylan Cook now appears to be the easy choice to be Steelers Week 1 starting right tackle on the heels of have poor Broderick Jones played against the Jets. Obviously, Ross and I don't wait too long to get to the play of the two quarterbacks Friday night, Will Howard and Drew Allar. We go over the two costly interceptions that Howard threw against the Jets and how WR Roman Wilson certainly seemed to play a role in both of them. As part of us discussing those two interceptions, Ross and I go over what HC Mike McCarthy and Howard each had to say about those two turnovers during their respective postgame press conferences. Ross and I also make sure to discuss the play of Allar during the second half of the Friday night game and how one big play that he made really stood out. Are the Steelers now guaranteed to keep all four quarterbacks on their 53-man roster at this point? Will the Steelers allow Allar to start the preseason finale against the Buffalo Bills? Will Allar and Howard once again be the only two quarterbacks to play against the Bills? Ross and I attempt to answerer all of those questions midway through this show. Should the team and fans be concerned about Wilson's play at wide receiver through two preseason games? Ross and I both think so. We also discuss the possibility of Wilson or rookie WR Germie Bernard being on the inactive list to open the 2026 regular season. After discussing all of the position groups on offensive from the Friday night game, Ross and I turn our attention to the play on the defensive side of the football. We go through all of the position groups on that side of the football and note the players we thought represented themselves well in that preseason contest. After briefly talking about the special teams play from Friday night, Ross and I talk about the latest report concerning Steelers CB Joey Porter Jr. when it comes to his ongoing contract extension talks with the team. This 87-minute episode also discusses several other minor topics not noted in the recap above. steelersdepot.com Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

The Pittsburgh Steelers fell flat on Friday night in a 17-0 losing effort to the New York Jets in NFL Preseason action. More important than the final score was the quarterback play by both Will Howard and Drew Allar. What went right, and wrong, with these two quarterbacks in the Week 2 game? And why was Mason Rudolph the big winner, without even playing? All that on the latest Steelers Chalk Talk podcast with Coach Kevin Smith. August 21, 2026 - Season 17, Episode 11 of The Terrible Podcast is now in the can. In this Friday morning show Alex Kozora and I start by talking about the likelihood of the Pittsburgh Steelers trading CB Joey Porter Jr. before the season starts on the heels of the Thursday night report from NFL insider Jordan Schultz. We go over the overall plausibility of Porter being traded and the several boxes that would need to be checked before the Steelers even remotely considered dealing him to another team. Will the Steelers ultimately get a contract extension with Porter done prior to the start of the regular season? What if they don't and what if they also decide not to trade him because of that? Alex and I attempt to go down that discussion path early in this show. The Steelers will play their second preseason game Friday night against the New York Jets so ahead of that, Alex and I give our full preview of that contest and that includes several players and things we will be watching for this evening. Alex goes over some specific things that fans should be looking for Friday night when it comes to the two young quarterbacks, Will Howard and Drew Allar. Will the Steelers ultimately keep four quarterbacks on the 53-man roster to start the regular season and is Mason Rudolph guaranteed to be one of at least three kept? How much of what Steelers HC Mike McCarthy said on Wednesday about Rudolph really matters as the final roster decision date creeps closer? Alex and I attempt to answer those questions, and we also look at a few times in recent history that NFL teams have kept four quarterbacks to open a regular season. Included in that historical four-quarterback lookback, Alex and I go over the last two times the Steelers opened a regular season with four quarterbacks on their 53-man roster. Ahead of Friday night's preseason game, Alex and I use the last part of this episode to compare and contrast our most recent 53-man roster predictions for the Steelers. While we only differ in two players overall, the quarterback group remains a huge part of our differences. We explain our decisions as part of predictions. This 113-minute episode also discusses several other minor topics not noted in the recap above and we close this show out by answering a few emails we received from listeners. steelersdepot.com Learn more about your ad choices.
