July 31, 2026 - Season 17, Episode 2 of The Terrible Podcast is now in the can. In this Friday morning show, that was recorded Thursday night, Alex Kozora and I start by giving some overarching thoughts on the Pittsburgh Steelers 2026 training camp with their first two practices now completed. The Steelers had eight players in for tryouts on Thursday, so Alex and I recap that list. We also discuss the two free agents that came in for visits on Thursday with S Jordan Whitehead being the marquee player. We discuss how Whitehead isn't likely to sign anywhere for a little while as he might decide to entertain a few more visits with other NFL teams. Steelers HC Mike McCarthy revealed his six pillars for team success on Thursday, so Alex and I recap those during this show. We also recap a few other things that McCarthy said on Thursday in addition to reviewing a few things that quarterbacks Will Howard and Mason Rudolph have said this week. ILB Patrick Queen recently gave his thoughts on his 2025 play, so we go over his self-evaluation and where his play needs to improve in 2026. OT Broderick Jones return from a serious 2025 neck injury seems to be going well so Alex and I discuss where he is at in his rehab and the possibility of him playing in at least one preseason game, if not all of them. This 50-minute episode also discusses several other minor topics not noted in the recap above and we end things by answering three questions we received on X. steelersdepot.com Learn more about your ad choices. Nick said Joey Porter Jr. has no reason to sign with the Steelers right now since a few corners are currently in the same situation he is in that could drive his price up.

Mike McCarthy said there will be no live tackling at Steelers camp. Joe is good with that. Will Howard and Drew Allar will split Np. 3 reps. Joe's conclusion is that Mason Rudolph is going to be the backup. Joe wonders where the opportunity will be for Will Howard. Bob and Joe think the Steelers are respecting Rudolph as a veteran and want Howard and Allar to earn reps as No. 2.
Steelers fans weigh in on if they are excited for camp. Anthony in Oakland thinks the Steelers need to hit in practice. Bob wants there to be physicality. Kyle Shanahan said before most injuries occur when you take someone to the ground. Bob thinks Will Howard will be the backup QB with a good training camp.

The Final Edition of Fair Game with Nick Farabaugh before Steelers Training Camp starts next week. What does Nick expect to see as Mike McCarthy prepares to take over for Mike Tomlin?
Steelers reporter Ray Fittipaldo from the PG joined the show. Where does Ray come down on the QB2 battle as we approach training camp? Ray thinks Mike McCarthy could have Will Howard as prepared as Mason Rudolph entering the season, which would make Rudolph expendable. How much pressure is on Roman Wilson? Ray thinks there will be some on Dylan Cook, who is holding off Max Iheanachor for the starting right tackle spot. What is the future like for Broderick Jones, who may not even be healthy enough to play? The guys got Ray's feeling of the Steelers continuing their training camp at St. Vincent College after all of these years.
Ben Roethlisberger has spoken about the backup QB situation and is in line with Mullsy once again. Ben said it's wiser to hold on to the 2 young guns that you don't know about yet, Will Howard and Drew Allar. Jon Gruden spoke very highly of Will Howard recently, saying that he has the “it factor”. He also said that Howard has a “winning aura” that teams should want. Poni thinks that it is possible for him to beat out Mason Rudolph for the Steelers QB2 position this Summer. Mullsy points out that Jon Gruden has never hated on a quarterback or said that a guy sucks. Will Howard was a 6th round pick. Why are Steelers fans so high on the guy if NFL teams were not?
Steelers insider Ray Fittipaldo from the PG joined the show. Jon Gruden continues to praise the work of Will Howard as we have yet to see him in a pro game. Ray thinks it's more of the same and added what we have heard so many times from Mike McCarthy so far. Per usual, Ray said the offense in the preseason will be vanilla, so it could come down to what we see in practice. Ray reacted to the idea that 6 Steelers, including Keeanu Benton, would fetch a 1st round pick in return if traded. Ray expects a bounce back year from TJ Watt and thinks he will have a 12-sack season. When will the Joey Porter Jr. contract buzz start to pick up again and when will that deal get done? How long will it take for Max Iheanachor to become the starter at right tackle?

Steelers correspondent Mark Kaboly from The Pat McAfee Show joined the show. Mark now just tweets “Buccos” any time something goes wrong for the Pirates. Poni thinks that this is to get under the skin of Pirate fans. Mark says that he has never been reprimanded by the Tomlin regime for anything journalism related, all though it happened a couple of times with the Cowher regime. More w/ Mark – Harry Callas is on a trip to Ireland right now, and he is currently bowling. Mark was shocked to see this, as bowling is something that you can do in Pittsburgh. Mark thinks that he was a better little league baseball player than JJ Wetherholt, citing that Wetherholt played in an era with bigger barrel bats and such. More w/ Mark – Ray Fittipaldo said that the backup QB job is Will Howard's to lose. Mark vehemently disagrees with this, saying that it is Aaron Rodgers 1 and Mason Rudolph 2 unless Will Howard forces the Steelers hand.
The Pirates have reinforcements coming to the bullpen, but don't get too excited. Tom Harrington is lugging his 7 ERA in Triple A to the majors and Antwone Kelly will join him. The guys going back down? Neither one of them is Dennis Santana, who deserves it more than anyone. Are we past the drama with Carmen Mlodzinski or is that still a cloud over this pitching staff? The MLB Draft starts tomorrow – should the Pirates consider trading their comp pick at 34 overall? Donny Football Debrief – Somehow, Terrion Arnold will likely play for an NFL team next season. This turned into a conversation about The Longest Yard. Steelers reporter Nick Farabaugh from Penn Live dot com joined the show. Nick agreed with another Steelers reporter in saying the backup QB job is for ‘Will Howard to lose.' Nick isn't sold that we see Aaron Rodgers play at all in the preseason, so we should also see plenty of Mason Rudolph in the 3 games. Nick expects to see ‘a ton' of Drew Allar late next month. Nick thinks the coaching staff absolutely misused Pat Freiermuth last season. Nick thinks we will see Freiermuth used more in this offense because Mike McCarthy has worked with similar TEs in recent seasons. Is TJ Watt definitely on the decline? Nick told fans to not worry about the team having any interest in signing Terrion Arnold. Nick believes we will see Joey Porter Jr. sign his new deal before the start of the regular season. Has Nick ever been in a fight?

Will Howard and Drew Allar need the reps and to overtake Mason Rudolph. Nick agrees and says the Steelers need to use the roster spot elsewhere. The Penguins signed forward Egor Chinakhov to a three-year contract worth $6.25 million per season. Joe thinks it's a fair deal. Arturs Silovs is back on a one-year deal.
