What does it take to turn a simple idea into something that could change an entire industry?Ryan sits down with Matt Ferguson, a journeyman lineman, storm worker, and inventor who spent years working in the field before developing a safer approach to one of the most common tasks crews perform every day. From chasing opportunities to break into the trade, to working long hours on storm restoration, to surviving early setbacks as an apprentice, Matt shares the experiences that shaped both his career and his perspective on safety. The conversation explores why some of the best innovations come from the people doing the work, how a chain from Home Depot and an old set of pole tongs sparked an idea in his dad's garage, and why challenging “the way it's always been done” is critical to moving the industry forward.Whether you're an apprentice, journeyman, supervisor, contractor, or someone looking to make a difference in your trade, this episode is a reminder that small ideas can have a big impact.Topics covered:Breaking into the line trade and earning opportunitiesLessons learned from storm workWorking through fear and setbacks as an apprenticeWhy experience creates better solutionsThe problem with accepting “the way it's always been done”How Matt developed his pole tong safety innovationInnovation, safety, and improving the tradeWhy workers should share their ideas and challenge old assumptionsMatt's vision for the future of the industry✌️SUPPORT THE PODCAST HERE ✌️
In this episode, Danny Raines discusses the "100 Days of Summer," a critical period spanning roughly from May 20th to September 10th. During this timeframe, approximately 60% of all major accidents and fatalities occur. The conversation covers the severe dangers of distracted driving , the catastrophic risks of head-on collisions and intersection accidents , and the life-saving importance of using seatbelts. For utility workers facing heightened workloads, the episode highlights the necessity of proper work zone setups , strategies to mitigate heat exhaustion while wearing PPE , and the critical requirement to adhere to the 2024 ASTM updates for testing insulated gloves. Key Takeaways The period between May 20th and September 10th accounts for roughly 60% of all major accidents and fatalities for the entire year. Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death and injuries in the country. Approximately 40% of all vehicle crashes occur at intersections. While head-on collisions make up only 3% to 9% of crashes, they account for around 33% of traffic-related deaths. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has recently introduced a new program focused on preventing heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Due to the 2024 ASTM update, electrical gloves cannot be used beyond 12 months from their test date. Questions & Answers Q: What is the "100 Days of Summer" and why is it a significant time of year? A: The "100 Days of Summer" refers to the time frame between approximately May 20th and September 10th. It is highly significant because roughly 60% of all severe accidents, vehicle crashes, and workplace fatalities throughout the entire year happen during this specific window. Q: What are the specific risks and statistics associated with not wearing seatbelts? A: In fatal highway crashes, half of the victims are not wearing safety belts. When individuals are unbelted, they often become projectiles inside the car, making the risk of injury three times higher for passengers in the back seat and two times higher for the driver. Q: What precautions must utility workers take regarding PPE and heat during the summer months? A: Utility workers must stay hydrated by drinking water and electrolytes instead of energy drinks. Even when it is hot and uncomfortable, workers must never remove necessary cover-up equipment. Furthermore, workers must strictly track their PPE testing, as the 2024 ASTM update mandates that insulated gloves cannot be used beyond 12 months from their test date. #100DaysOfSummer #UtilitySafety #IncidentPrevention #DistractedDriving #LinemanSafety #PPETesting #Lineman #Linemen #Lineworkers Subscribe to Incident Prevention Magazine - https://incident-prevention.com/subscribe-now/ Register for the iP Utility Safety Conference & Expo - https://utilitysafetyconference.com/ _______________________________ This podcast is sponsored by T&D Powerskills. Because lineworkers are heroes and first responders, they have been celebrated in songs, books and movies. For this episode of the T&D World Line Life Podcast, we are featuring an interview with William Wister Haines, Jr., the son of the author of Slim and the companion book, High Tension. During this episode, William shares the story of how his father's book, inspired by his work in the line trade, became not only a national bestseller, but also a Hollywood movie starring Henry Fonda. Years later, he continued his father's legacy by bringing both books back into print. He now personally inscribes and ships copies to training programs and lineworkers nationwide. What would you do if you lost your leg at 15 and then decided to become a lineman? That's exactly what Brandon Crawford did. Born and raised in Arkansas, Brandon lost his leg below the knee in an ATV accident the week before 10th grade. Doctors gave his family a choice: amputate now, or try to save it and risk losing it anyway. They chose to try and he lost it regardless. He never looked back.In this episode, Ryan sits down with Brandon for a raw, honest conversation about what it actually takes to build a life in this trade when the odds are stacked against you. Brandon talks about climbing poles on a prosthetic leg, earning respect the hard way, his battle with PTSD, and why his wife's ultimatum may have saved his life. He opens up about storm work, brotherhood, the guys who shaped him, and why he's passionate about safety culture and training the next generation the right way. This isn't an inspirational poster. It's a real story about a real lineman and it'll hit home for anyone who's ever been told what they can't do.Topics covered:- Losing his leg at 15 and the road back.- Why he chose linework and how he convinced a school to let him try.- Climbing poles on a prosthetic and the adaptations nobody talks about.- PTSD, mental health, and the moment his wife changed everything.- Storm work, brotherhood, and the bonds the trade builds.- Safety culture — training vs. policing, and why the difference matters.- Why he wants to be an instructor and give back to the next generation.

Mike chats with Jeff Childers—the attorney-turned-writer behind the wildly popular Coffee & Covid Substack—for a wide-ranging conversation about media narratives, pandemic politics, and the strange new world of citizen journalism. What began as a daily blog written during lockdown has grown into a must-read for hundreds of thousands of devotees looking for sharp legal insight, media criticism, and a dose of wry humor with their morning coffee. Jeff explains what it takes to crank out 2,000 to 6,000 snarky words every single day of the week, why he started writing in the first place, and how an attorney accidentally became one of the most widely read independent commentators on the internet. Along the way, he talks with Mike about the stories that keep him up at night—and why, despite all of it, he remains surprisingly optimistic about where the country is headed. ☕

Aaron Graves is from Dayton, IA and prepped at Southeast Valley High school. He became the youngest player to ever commit to the Hawkeyes just after his Freshman year and completely shut down his recruiting after verbally agreeing to be a Hawkeye. He joins the show from Texas where he's training for combine/pro day drills while living with his wife and newborn. Graves recounts the hectic 48 hours around the Nebraska game when his son was born on Thanksgiving Day, including a late-night charter flight to Lincoln, skipping meetings, playing, returning straight to the hospital, and receiving a game ball and framed display after Iowa's 40–16 win. He reflects on committing to Iowa as a sophomore after his first offer from Kirk Ferentz, growing up in Dayton, Iowa and Southeast Valley (a small district spanning 13 towns), playing multiple sports, winning the school's first state title, and finishing as the program's all-time leading basketball scorer. Graves discusses arriving at Iowa with the goal to control effort and preparation, earning early snaps and his first sack, and the wake-up call of playing at Ohio State as a freshman. He explains leadership growth into a starting role, the impact of older teammates in a roster now filled with fifth- and sixth-year players, and how Iowa approached NIL and revenue sharing by avoiding pay talk to prevent locker-room friction. Graves details graduating quickly—earning an associate degree from Iowa Central before high school, completing his exercise science bachelor's in four semesters, and finishing a sport and recreation management master's in three. He also addresses disappointment over not being invited to the NFL Combine, argues both he and Gronowski are deserving, and shares how Mark earned trust through competitiveness and steady improvement. The episode closes with Graves' plan for making a 53-man roster and his confidence heading into Iowa's pro day reunion with teammates. Mike chats with billionaire entrepreneur and producer Thomas Tull, a man whose career has repeatedly put him just one degree away from greatness. Tull talks about his ownership stakes in professional sports teams including his beloved Pittsburgh Steelers, how he helped create a data-driven approach to marketing blockbuster films through Legendary Pictures and why understanding audiences mattered as much as the movies themselves. Along the way, Tull explains how it feels when his rock band, Ghost Hounds, takes the stage to open for none other than The Rolling Stones. Ross Tucker joined @mejvt on Super Bowl 60 in San Francisco to talk about the power game of both Seattle and New England. He also discussed @myfrontpagegift. A great Valentine's Day gift idea.
The phones light up as Packer Nation processes the Mike Gannon hire and what it means for this defense. Callers dive deep into Gannon's "I don't have a scheme" philosophy and whether his ability to adjust on the fly could solve the problems that plagued Green Bay when Micah Parsons went down. Liz from upstate New York makes a compelling case for giving Gannon a shot, while the crew examines his dominant 2022 Eagles pass rush that produced 70 sacks. The conversation heats up around Rich Bisaccia and special teams—are injuries really to blame, or is it a discipline problem that starts at the top? Plus, Jeff Mannion's meteoric rise to Eagles DC in just three years raises uncomfortable questions about coaches who never get hired away. Dakota sparks a fascinating draft discussion: how many of our best players actually came from the first round? The historical breakdown might surprise you. And Nico from Idaho closes the show with an all-time pitch for drafting Jennings Dunker—the mullet-wearing, Culver's-loving offensive lineman who could become Tucker Kraft's new best friend. Ryan dives into the latest NFL coaching carousel and what it means for Green Bay, including Jim Leonard landing the Bills DC job and Derek Ansley heading to Dallas. Jennings Dunker hype: the mullet-wearing Iowa offensive lineman stealing hearts at the Senior Bowl NFL Competition Committee considering video review for player safety penalties Ryan also covers Aaron Rodgers-to-Steelers speculation, Drew Petzing calling plays in Detroit, and Super Bowl injury updates for Darnold and Drake May. On the latest Off the Edge with Cam Jordan podcast, Cam welcomes Seahawks Pro Bowl defensive tackle Leonard Williams for a wide-ranging, funny, and surprisingly nerdy conversation that goes from playoffs to Pro Bowls to Pokémon. Leonard breaks down why this Seahawks squad is the best team he’s ever been on. He and Cam also chop it up about Seattle’s push for the top playoff seed in the NFC, the importance of a first-round bye, and how different it feels playing meaningful December football after years on teams that didn’t win. He opens up about how joining Seattle changed his career trajectory, what it’s like playing for head coach Mike McDonald, and the life of a hybrid defensive lineman. From Philip Rivers NFL return to USC football to anime debates to becoming a father, this conversation is a blend of football IQ, storytelling, laughs, and real insight into one of the league’s most versatile trench players.
