Will off-the-field noise distract BYU football? + Depth chart analysis + Insider look at Utah Tech

Cougar Tracks

Game week is here for No. 14 BYU, and KSL Sports BYU Insider Mitch Harper delivers a jam-packed episode to get Cougar Nation fully locked in ahead of Saturday's season opener against Utah Tech at LaVell Edwards Stadium (6 p.m. MT, ESPN+ and KSL NewsRadio). Mitch opens the show with the biggest off-the-field headline of the week: the BYU athletic department has been restructured, with AD Brian Santiago no longer overseeing football operations directly. The move comes after weeks of public tension between Santiago and head coach Kalani Sitake, who turned down Penn State last winter and has been vocal about BYU needing to invest more resources into the football program. Sitake addressed the restructuring during his Monday press conference, sharing his thoughts on the changes and what they mean for the program moving forward. Mitch breaks down Sitake's comments and wonders: Will this be a distraction for BYU football in 2026? As it was last year leading up to the Big 12 Championship Game? Mitch Harper sits down with a familiar voice in the Utah sports broadcasting world — Rod Zundel, the "Voice of the Trailblazers" and Director of Broadcasting and Multimedia Content for Utah Tech Athletics — for a special game-week conversation previewing Saturday's BYU-Utah Tech season opener at LaVell Edwards Stadium. Before becoming the play-by-play voice calling Utah Tech football, men's basketball, and baseball on FM 99.5 in St. George, Zundel spent nearly 24 years at KSL-TV in Salt Lake City as a sports anchor and reporter. He hosted SportsBeat Saturday and Sunday, KSL 5 Golf Utah, and KSL 5 Outdoor Adventures. He's been calling Trailblazer games since 2022, when Utah Tech made its transition to Division I and the WAC, and now enters his first year covering the program in the Big Sky Conference. In the interview, Zundel gives Cougar Nation the insider view from St. George. He shares what Utah Tech looked like in its Week 0 season opener — a 54-0 loss to No. 1 Montana State at Greater Zion Stadium — and what third-year head coach Lance Anderson's team is working on as it prepares to travel to Provo for its first game against an FBS opponent this season. Zundel discusses the Utah Tech quarterback situation, and the players and schemes BYU fans should keep an eye on Saturday. He also touches on the state of Utah Tech athletics as the Trailblazers embark on their first season in the Big Sky, what the program's long-term trajectory looks like, and the unique challenge of preparing an FCS squad to walk into a packed LaVell Edwards Stadium and face the No. 14 team in the country. To close out the show, Mitch dives deep into BYU's first official depth chart of the 2026 season. Among the notable takeaways: true freshman wide receiver Legend Glasker is listed as a starter — the first true freshman to open as a starting wideout under Sitake. Cal transfer linebacker Cade Uluave has earned a starting nod at linebacker despite not yet playing a snap in a BYU uniform, and Oregon transfer Kyler Kasper slots in at another receiving spot. Bear Bachmeier returns as the unquestioned QB1 with Treyson Bourguet behind him. On defense, Kelly Poppinga's first depth chart as defensive coordinator features Faletau Satuala back at safety after recovering from his fractured foot, alongside Evan Johnson at corner and Keanu Tanuvasa anchoring the defensive line. Mitch goes position by position, highlighting the starters, the competition, and the names to watch Saturday night. Roster Cuts Loom as Jeanty's Injury Reshapes Backfield

Silver and Black Today Show

Camp is over, and Raider Nation is staring down two deadlines at once: tonight's preseason finale against the San Francisco 49ers, and Saturday's roster cut down to 53 names. Scott Gulbransen breaks down both, starting with the injury hanging over everything. Ashton Jeanty went down diving for a low Kirk Cousins pass Sunday and couldn't put weight on his right leg, prompting the entire team to take a knee in prayer. Head coach Klint Kubiak stayed characteristically tight-lipped on Tuesday, offering only "he's on the mend," but reports since then point to a low ankle sprain rather than anything long-term. Scott lays out why there's still a real chance Jeanty opens the season on the shelf, and why that makes fourth-round rookie Mike Washington Jr. one of the most important names in the building. With Jeanty sidelined the last two practices, Washington stepped into first-team work, showed real growth as a pass catcher out of the backfield, and is averaging over 8 yards a carry through two preseason games. From there, Scott runs through the rest of the rookie class making late-camp noise: second-round safety Treydan Stukes, who's taking heavy first-team reps and drawing praise from defensive coordinator Rob Leonard; cornerback Darien Porter, whose recovery speed has shown up against Brock Bowers and Jalen Nailor; and offensive lineman Trey Zuhn III, whose versatility across the line could be the difference-maker in a crowded position group. Plus the latest on No. 1 overall pick Fernando Mendoza, his chemistry with Malik Benson, why Scott still doesn't think he should start Week 1, and how Kubiak is keeping the quarterback competition close to the vest. Also in this episode: the right guard battle between Jackson Powers-Johnson and Caleb Rogers, what to watch for tonight against the 49ers, a call from Anders in Oakland pushing back on the offensive line and the Mendoza timeline, and Scott's honest read on where this rebuild actually stands heading into Week 1. Tennessee's Defense Just Made A HUGE Statement...

The Tennessee Vols defense is beginning to show some extremely encouraging signs under new defensive coordinator Jim Knowles after a much stronger performance in Tennessee's second preseason scrimmage. Charlie Burris and Zach Ragan break down what they're hearing about the Vols' defense on the Big Orange Podcast, why Tennessee finally appears to be developing a defensive identity and the one position that still creates some legitimate concern entering the 2026 college football season. Tennessee's defense reportedly bounced back in a major way during the Vols' second scrimmage. The defense created multiple turnover opportunities against Faizon Brandon and George MacIntyre, while Tennessee's defensive front generated pressure and players such as Xavier Gilliam continued to create optimism along the interior. More importantly, Josh Heupel believes the defense is developing a personality under Jim Knowles. That's a potentially significant development for a Tennessee defense that struggled with communication, consistency and identity last season. Charlie and Zach explain why Knowles' ability to build his scheme around the strengths of Tennessee's personnel could put the Vols' defenders in a much better position to succeed. The goal doesn't have to be creating an elite defense immediately. Tennessee simply needs to make a substantial improvement from what it put on the field last season. There are still questions. Edge rusher remains one of the biggest concerns on Tennessee's roster. The Vols don't have much proven SEC production at the position, which could put additional pressure on Tennessee's interior defensive line to generate a consistent pass rush. The guys also discuss Daevin Hobbs' health, Jordan Norman's opportunity, the development of Tennessee's secondary after the loss of Edrees Farooq and why getting linebacker Arion Carter back for the Georgia Tech game is such an important development. Carter's NCAA suspension has officially been reduced to one game, meaning he'll miss Tennessee's season opener against Furman but will be eligible to return when the Vols travel to face Georgia Tech. And, of course, Tennessee finally has its starting quarterback. Josh Heupel officially named five-star true freshman Faizon Brandon the Vols' QB1 after his competition with George MacIntyre. Charlie and Zach briefly discuss why Brandon was the right choice and why the freshman's combination of talent, maturity and upside makes his future in Josh Heupel's offense so exciting. Has Jim Knowles already changed Tennessee's defense? Can the Vols generate enough pressure off the edge? How much improvement does this unit need to make in 2026? And what should Tennessee fans expect when the Vols finally take the field? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Faizon Brandon Is Tennessee's QB1—What It Means for Josh Heupel and George MacIntyre

615 Sessions with Buck Reising

The Tennessee Vols have officially named true freshman Faizon Brandon their starting quarterback for the 2026 college football season. Austin Stanley fills in for Charlie Burris alongside Zach Ragan for an immediate Big Orange Podcast reaction to Josh Heupel selecting Brandon over redshirt freshman George MacIntyre. Brandon entered Tennessee as a five-star prospect and continued building momentum throughout spring practice, summer workouts and fall camp. Although MacIntyre had an additional year inside Heupel's offense, Brandon's arm talent, athleticism, playmaking ability and command of the system proved enough to win the job. Austin and Zach explain why Heupel made the more difficult—and potentially more consequential—decision by starting Brandon immediately. Heupel could have given MacIntyre the opening assignment and maintained an easier path to Brandon later. Instead, Tennessee committed to the 18-year-old true freshman as its QB1 entering the season opener against Furman. What are fair expectations for Brandon during his freshman season? Austin examines the production of first-year starting quarterbacks in Heupel's offense, while Zach projects Brandon to complete approximately 60 percent of his passes, throw for roughly 2,600 to 2,900 yards and finish with fewer than 10 interceptions. They also discuss how DeSean Bishop, Tennessee's offensive line and an experienced group of pass catchers can help Brandon through the inevitable growing pains of playing quarterback in the SEC. Brandon's mobility could provide another important dimension. Tennessee has struggled in certain short-yardage and red-zone situations during the Heupel era, and Brandon's size and athleticism could help turn stalled possessions into touchdowns. The conversation also examines what Brandon's victory means for George MacIntyre. Tennessee still needs to develop MacIntyre as a legitimate second option, especially during early games against Furman and Kennesaw State. MacIntyre has only nine collegiate pass attempts, and the Vols cannot afford for his first meaningful experience to arrive unexpectedly against Georgia Tech, Texas or another SEC opponent. How long is Brandon's leash now that he has already defeated MacIntyre for the job? Could the quarterback competition reopen if Brandon struggles? And what could this decision eventually mean for MacIntyre in the transfer portal? Austin and Zach break down every layer of Josh Heupel's biggest decision entering the 2026 Tennessee football season. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
