On this episode of “Hangout in the Holy Land,” Josh and Chuck ignore Ohio State football completely and instead focus on basketball, wrestling, and synchronized swimming... Just kidding, but kudos to those Scarlet and Gray teams currently taking care of business. Still a little salty as a result of The Game, the Hangout Boys attempt to boost morale by talking a little roundball. Both of Ohio State's basketball teams are currently thriving; one doing so rather unexpectedly. So what has been the key to the OSU men's team's hot start? And can Chris Holtmann's squad keep it up? Elsewhere, some football was recently played. Have you heard? And it will continue to be played by teams seeking a blissful end to their 2023-24 season. Throughout the year, Land-Grant Holy Land will be bringing you uncut audio primarily from Ohio State press conferences, but also from individual interview sessions. Monday, the Ohio State women's basketball team played its second neutral site game of the season. This time, at the Baha Mar Pink Flamingo Championship, against the East Carolina Pirates. In a game where the Pirates came within one point of the Buckeyes in the second quarter, Ohio State adjusted and turned up the intensity in the second half to pull away with a comfortable 79-55 win. After the game, head coach Kevin McGuff and forwards Taylor Thierry and Rebeka Mikulášiková spoke with the media. Coach McGuff discussed a contentious third quarter moment after Thierry went to the ground on an intentional foul on ECU. Also, improved rebounding and playing against a similar style of full court press as their own. Thierry and Mikulášiková talked about staying cool in a physical game and Mikulášiková talked about her improved shooting as the game went on, especially from deep. Finally, Thierry talks about the moment when teammate Celeste Taylor stepped in to defend her following a hard fall to the ground and how it represents the Buckeyes' team chemistry. On LGHL Instant Recap Pods, Land-Grant Holy Land writers break down Ohio State games just minutes after the action ends. They bring you the biggest stats, storylines, and moments of the game before the players make it back to the locker room. The Ohio State Buckeyes used a nearly flawless first half to blowout the Michigan State Spartans 38-3 on Saturday night. In what is unquestionably Kyle McCord's best game as the Buckeyes' starter, he went 24-for-31 for 335 yards and 3 touchdowns. Marvin Harrison Jr. continued to make his Heisman Trophy candidacy case with 149 yards receiving and TDs through the air and another -- his first -- rushing. The OSU defense was a bit banged up without starting safeties Lathan Ransom and Josh Proctor or captain and starting linebacker Tommy Eichenberg, but -- despite giving up a little bit of yardage early on -- held Michigan State to just 182 yards of total offense. The Ohio State special teams continue to be a problem, but we are focusing on good vibes tonight. He recaps a Buckeye blowout on the gridiron, a tough defeat on the hardwood, and all the other Ohio State-related news you can handle. But first, both of the Hangout boys weigh in briefly on the ongoing and seemingly never-ending Michigan saga. Did new Big Ten commish Tony Petitti handle this situation correctly? Did the punishment fit the crime? And what now? Next up is OSU men's basketball... And finally, Chuck gets to the main course: A Buckeye football recap. After two straight good-not-great performances on the road, Ryan Day's squad was back in The Shoe on Saturday night and put a four-quarter thumping on the Michigan State Spartans. Ohio State coasted to a 38 - 3 victory, despite several injured Buckeyes watching from the sideline. On this episode of ‘Hangout in the Holy Land,' Josh and Chuck attempt to predict this week's initial College Football Playoff rankings, before discussing a less-than-stellar outing from their Ohio State Buckeyes. At the top of the show, the Hangout boys banter about where teams should be ranked in the CFP, as well as which players should be in the Heisman conversation. The guys disagree on rankings, but only because Josh believes that the CFP selection committee will do whatever it wants in the last year of the four-team playoff. Conversely, the hosts have nearly identical Heisman thoughts. Chief among them is the fact that Marvin Harrison Jr. should be considered one of the current favorites. As for Ohio State's win over Wisconsin... Well, at least the Buckeyes have Marv, TreVeyon Henderson, and Jim Knowles. The Hangout guys were disappointed in OSU's ‘other' guys, but a win is a win. However, if Ryan Day's squad is to eventually hoist a CFP trophy, they will need much better play from QB Kyle McCord, as well as his offensive line and supporting cast. Land-Grant Holy Land's Stick to Sports is unlike any podcast you've heard on the Ohio State beat. On this episode of the Land-Grant Podcast Network's sports-adjacent podcast "Stick to Sports," Matt Tamanini and Jami Jurich laugh nearly uncontrollably about the bumbling nature with which the University of Michigan football program handled its illegal spying program. Was it successful for two years? Who really knows? But the keystone cops' way they went about it makes its unraveling that much funnier. They also dive into how this has brought out the goofiest conspiracy theories from the Corn and Blue fans, reminiscent of one of Jami's favorite conspiracy theories. Finally, they talk about OSU facing Luke Fickell, "Killers of the Flower Moon," and the joys of Hallmark Christmas movies. Come for the hot takes, stay for the warm ones. On this episode of ‘Hangout in the Holy Land,' Josh and Chuck attempt to break down and intelligently discuss TTUN's (alleged) sign stealing. Thing or not a thing? Were punishable lines crossed? And who was directly involved? In other words, who ordered the code red!? After ‘Conspiracy Hour', the hosts look ahead to Ohio State's upcoming road game against Wisconsin. Led by former OSU player and coach Luke Fickell, the Badgers looked like a team struggling with transition for the first month of the season. But thanks to a few gritty wins and Iowa's surprising loss to Minnesota, Fickell and Co. are firmly back in the Big Ten West race, looking to upset the Buckeyes and set up a possible rematch in Indianapolis. Despite each team dealing with impactful injuries, both Ohio State and Wisconsin took care of business last weekend, leading to or creating this pivotal cross-division matchup. And while the Buckeyes are currently a two-score favorite, the Badgers and their coach should not be taken lightly. On top of Fickell being one of the best coaches in the country, the atmosphere in and around Camp Randall Stadium will be raucous and potentially game-altering on Saturday night. Can OSU quarterback Kyle McCord quiet the noise like he did against Notre Dame? And how many offensive weapons will he have at his disposal? This has all the makings of a classic trap game for the Buckeyes, but the Hangout boys are optimistic that Ohio State's clutch offense and stingy defense will travel. Come for the hot takes, stay for the warm ones. On this episode of ‘Hangout in the Holy Land,' Josh and Chuck give props to not only OSU defensive coordinator Jim Knowles, but also Larry Johnson, Tim Walton, Perry Eliano and the players, as Ohio State rode their stingy defense to a second victory (this season) over a top-10 team — stifling a normally productive Penn State offense in the process. But first, the hosts discuss other goings-on around the CFB landscape, as several ranked teams played close games. Closer than they ever should have been. Both Washington and Oklahoma struggled coming off of big, emotional victories, while Iowa... Iowa'ed? As a result of the latter, the Big Ten West is unfortunately and comically wide open, and the Hangout boys are both disgusted and amused. The title race is heating up, and so is the Heisman race. The guys give their current favorites before transitioning to a total Knowles lovefest. And why not? The Buckeyes' DC and his group of coaches have their ‘Silver Bullets' playing at a championship level. While Ryan Day and the OSU offense continue to tinker and tweak - and hope to improve - Knowles' group is making an argument for the best unit in the country. The Buckeyes smothered the Nittany Lions and came away with an impressive victory, despite missing a number of key players. Here's hoping Ohio State can get healthy and continue getting better as they work toward a regular season finale in Ann Arbor. Please make sure to like, rate, review, and subscribe to the podcast! What an absolutely historic defensive performance from the No. 3 Ohio State Buckeyes as they dispatched the No. 7 Penn State Nittany Lions 20-12 in Ohio Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Silver Bullets played perhaps their best game in half a decade, completely shutting down an offense that had been putting up 44 points per game this season. Now, there is still a lot to be desired from the offense with drops, bad throws, red zone inefficiencies, running game issues, and poor play-calling still popping up their ugly heads, but thanks to a career-best 11 receptions, Marvin Harrison Jr. helped the OSU offense do enough to pull off their second top-10 victory of the season. Because of the wins over Notre Dame and PSU, our Matt Tamanini believes that there is no doubt that Ohio State should be the No. 1 team in the country. On this episode of ‘Hangout in the Holy Land,' Josh and Chuck preview Ohio State's upcoming game against the impressive and thus far undefeated Nittany Lions.  While the Buckeyes have dominated this ‘rivalry' in recent years, Penn State is inarguably one of CFB's top teams in 2023. Led by a stout defense, a potent ground game, and Ohio native Drew Allar at QB, James Franklin's squad should come rolling into Columbus with plenty of confidence. On the other side - the good side - OSU should be equally as confident. The similarly undefeated Scarlet and Gray have enjoyed a run of great success against PSU, winning 16 of the last 20 matchups. However, the Buckeyes could be missing key pieces on both offense and defense, putting them at a potential disadvantage — even at home. The Hangout boys are somehow nervous and confident at the same time, as they break down key matchups and matters of the utmost importance for both teams. Come for the hot takes, stay for the warm ones. On this episode of ‘Hangout in the Holy Land,' Josh and Chuck recap Ohio State's impressive but potentially costly win over the Purdue Boilermakers. The Buckeyes went into West Lafayette and took care of business, but watched the team's second leading rusher and arguably their best defensive player leave the game due to injury. Saturday's Scarlet and Gray action was available exclusively on ‘Peacock', making it about as fun as a trip to the dentist for your hosts. The guys discuss how unenjoyable their viewing experience was, before pivoting to positives, including a surprise BOOM and of course, a decisive OSU victory. Down multiple running backs and a star wideout, Ohio State went into Ross-Ade Stadium and dominated anyway. The hosts continue to be impressed by Kyle McCord and the Buckeyes' defense, and they also believe that running back Dallan Hayden should receive more playing time. However, OSU's victory did come at a cost. RB Chip Trayanum and CB Denzel Burke left with injuries, adding to the team's recent health woes. They bring you the biggest stats, storylines, and moments of the game before the players make it back to the locker room. On today's episode, Matt Tamanini and Justin Golba are breaking down No.3 Ohio State's 40-7 victory over the Purdue Boilermakers. It certainly wasn't a perfect performance from the Buckeyes, but it felt like OSU did everything that it needed to do in order to get prepared for the challenge Penn State will present next weekend. Kyle McCord had arguably his most complete performance of the season and the defense continued to show a remarkable ability for keeping opposing offenses out of the end zone. Of course, there were a few negatives as both running back Chip Trayanum and cornerback Denzel Burke left the game due to injuries. As of recording time, Ohio State had not provided any updates as to the severity of their injuries, but Trayanum appeared to be in concussion protocol, while Burke seemed to be dealing with a leg injury. The Buckeye wide receivers -- including Marvin Harrison Jr. -- had an abnormal number of drops, but if that is the biggest issue for a team, then you are in pretty good shape. On this episode of ‘Hangout in the Holy Land,' Josh and Chuck reluctantly preview Ohio State's upcoming road trip to West Lafayette (IN) and Purdue's Ross-Ade Stadium. Reluctantly, because it seems like just whispering “Ross-Ade” has a spooky, Beetlejuice-like effect.  The Boilermakers' home venue has long been a house of horrors for the Buckeyes, with the latter dropping five games in West Lafayette since 2000. Including three of their last four! While Ross-Ade was also the site of ‘Holy Buckeye', there is no doubt that Purdue's stadium has been more worrisome than welcoming to the Scarlet and Gray. So will OSU continue to struggle at Ross-Ade, and deal with the Ghost of Upsets Past? Or is the talent gap between Ryan Day's and Ryan Walters' teams just too big this season? Against their better judgement, the hosts feel pretty good about their Buckeyes this weekend. The look-ahead possibilities are very real for Ohio State, but Day's squad can ill afford to go into Penn State week with anything less than 100% confidence. Come for the hot takes, stay for the warm ones. On this episode of ‘Hangout in the Holy Land,' Josh and Chuck try to keep it positive following their Buckeyes' 37-17 victory over previously undefeated Maryland. But despite a win and a cover, Ohio State showed real regression on offense, as well as on the sideline. So how concerned should fans be moving forward? While Jim Knowles' defense continued to impress on Saturday, Ryan Day's offense did anything but... for the better part of three quarters. Problems along the offensive line were only exacerbated by the absence of TreVeyon Henderson, but both Day and Kyle McCord have to be better if OSU has hopes of winning the Big Ten or a national championship. That likely starts with better first halves. But the sky is not falling yet, as Ohio State does own a spotless 5-0 record. Though the Buckeyes ended up covering the spread, the game was certainly in doubt well into the third quarter, but the OSU defense continued its lights-out play and the offense shook off a worrisome first half and an ineffective running game throughout to show glimpses of the Ohio State offenses of years past. Kyle McCord had his best half as a Buckeye especially as he leaned on his high school teammate Marvin Harrison Jr. There are certainly plenty of questions to ask coming out of this game, but for Matt, those questions lay more at the feet of the coaches than the players. The final score doesn't erase any of the failures that we saw earlier in the game, but it does remind us of what the team is capable of when hitting on all cylinders. Clear the calendar, because this Saturday is dedicated to one thing and one thing only. No family plans, no trips to Home Depot. Week 4 of the CFB season offers up an enticing slate of games, as the unofficial kickoff of conference play means ranked matchups all over the place. From sun up to sun down, the hosts plan on watching as many as humanly possible. They pick and discuss a few favorites, before turning their attention to the Buckeyes, As if there were any question at all, Ohio State @ Notre Dame is the clear and definitive marquee matchup of the weekend. The Hangout Boys preview this top-10 showdown between Silver Bullets (or the Scarlet and Gray) and Golden Domers, which will be the first real test for both teams. How will OSU quarterback Kyle McCord perform in a hostile environment? Will either defensive line get pressure? And are these ND skill players the real deal? These are just a few of the questions Josh and Chuck attempt to answer as they preview what should be a highly entertaining contest. On LGHL Instant Recap Pods, Land-Grant Holy Land writers break down Ohio State games just minutes after the action ends. They bring you the biggest stats, storylines, and moments of the game before the players make it back to the locker room. After a somewhat shaky start to the game on Saturday, the No. 6 Ohio State Buckeyes absolutely blew the doors off of the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers to the tune of a 63-10 victory. Kyle McCord looked every part of a Buckeye starting quarterback going for 318 yards on 19-of-23 passing. Marvin Harrison Jr. was -- unsurprisingly -- the biggest recipient of those passes, wracking up 126 yards and a touchdown, but Emeka Egbuka was also instrumental in the victory as he accounted for two Buckeye TDs. On the ground, TreVeyon Henderson also had a big day rushing for a pair of scores and Chip Trayanum also had one as well. The offense felt like it finally figured out the best way to operate with someone who wasn't C.J. Stroud at the helm. After an early fumble, McCord looked confident and in control of the offense and had an impressive day before giving way to Devin Brown in the fourth quarter. The defense also came to play, holding one of the most prolific passing offenses in college football to just 204 yards through the air and 284 overall. They also delivered WKU quarterback Austin Reed his first sack and interception of the year. In total, the Buckeye had four takeaways, including a pair that went for scores. Overall, it was about as good of a final tuneup game as you could get before heading to South Bend next weekend. Come for the hot takes, stay for the warm ones. On this episode of “Hangout in the Holy Land,” Josh and Chuck discuss Ohio State's first dominant performance of the season, as well as the Week 3 college football slate which saw several (other) top-10 teams ‘play with their food' and fail to take care of business in impressive fashion. The Buckeyes are good again! And so is Kyle McCord, as well as the OSU defense. In reality, Saturday's game against Western Kentucky is or was what fans of the Scarlet and Gray had been hoping for all season. The hosts are cautiously optimistic that momentum carries over to next weekend and massive matchup with Notre Dame. Elsewhere, you know who's not good again!? Alabama... Maybe. The Hangout Boys saw several lackluster performances outside of Columbus yesterday, and they think it is due to CFB's growing quarterback problem. Early in the pod, the guys talk QB movement and failure, and why Ryan Day deserves credit for developing players at the most important position on the field. Josh and Chuck close the episode with Winners, Losers, and Fantasy MVPs, a tradition like no other. Please make sure to like, rate, review, and subscribe to the podcast! And as always, Go Bucks! Come for the hot takes, stay for the warm ones. On this episode of “Hangout in the Holy Land,” Josh and Chuck look ahead to a potential shootout in The Shoe, as Ohio State hosts Western Kentucky and their high octane offense in Week 3. The Buckeyes are once again favored to win by multiple scores, as they should be when hosting a Conference USA opponent. But the WKU Hilltoppers should be taken very seriously. Powered by a potent air raid style offense, this team atop the hill also causes plenty of turnovers on defense and has a recent history of playing Big Ten teams closely. Will OSU's official QB1, Kyle McCord, and the Buckeyes' offense be able to keep up in a gridiron track meet? Will the Scarlet and Gray secondary step up and earn back their BIA moniker? And will Western Kentucky be Ryan Day and company's sole focus? The Hangout Boys are cautiously optimistic and eager to see if Ohio State can settle into a rhythm - and win convincingly - before the team's big trip to South Bend. Come for the hot takes, stay for the warm ones. On this episode of Hangout in the Holy Land, Josh and Chuck go back and forth on a divisive Ohio State victory over FCS Youngstown State. Sure, a win is a win, but there are admittedly some questions and concerns emanating from The Shoe. The Buckeyes defeated the Youngstown State Fighting Tressels Penguins in Week 2, however, OSU's run game looked shaky, and their defense failed to create pressure — both for a second consecutive week. Is this Ryan Day's team working out some kinks and/or playing tight? Or is it something a bit more troubling? On a much more positive note, Kyle McCord seems to have taken ownership of the QB position, which could go a long way in solving some of the Buckeyes' early season issues. The hosts discuss McCord's Week 2 improvements, while also celebrating the return of Marvin the Martian (Harrison Jr.) and giving kudos to a stingy defense. Overall, the guys are cautiously optimistic and eager to see what Day and company cook up in the next few weeks. Please make sure to like, rate, review, and subscribe to the podcast! On today's episode, Matt Tamanini and Justin Golba are breaking down No. 5 Ohio State's 35-7 victory over the Youngstown State Penguins from Saturday, Sept. 9, 2023. Despite a seemingly easy win, the pair -- especially Matt -- was frustrated by the decision-making by the coaches and the lack of production by the offensive and defensive lines, especially given the fact that OSU was playing a presumably overmatched FCS opponent. It's time for Ryan Day to stop the Devin Brown experiment and allow Kyle McCord to get all of the first team reps in order to prepare for Notre Dame and Jim Knowles and Larry Johnson need to bury the hatchet on their simmering feud, or the defensive line could spoil a really good defense. Land-Grant Holy Land's Stick to Sports is unlike any podcast you've heard on the Ohio State beat. Your hosts, Matt Tamanini and Jami Jurich, will (of course) talk Ohio State sports, but the primary focus of the show will be on what's going on around the periphery, such as weird/funny happenings in college football and the sports world at large, as well as other things that keep us interested in between games. We love watching college football, but either with bad announcers, terrible camera work, or by hiding games on random streaming services, it's getting more difficult to enjoy games on TV. On this episode of "Stick to Sports," Matt Tamanini and Jami Jurich get into the highs and (mostly) lows of Ohio State's first game on CBS as part of the new Big Ten media rights deal and then go off on a bit of a tangent about how media companies have ruined a pretty good thing (the cable bundle) to chase streaming money, only to realize they should have never blown it up in the first place. The Buckeyes take on the Youngstown State Fighting Tressels Penguins in Week 2, and the Hangout Boys are back with a scintillating preview. I mean, what else would you expect for a game of this magnitude?  In all seriousness, these hosts are anticipating a much stronger showing from the Scarlet and Gray this weekend. After a conservative approach to open the season on the road, Josh and Chuck expect to see Ryan Day and company really let loose back in the friendly and comfortable confines of The Shoe. And if they don't, well then Columbus, we might have a problem. Plus, the guys react to Day's weekly presser and do their best to make sense of the Buckeyes' current quarterback situation. They bring you the biggest stats, storylines, and moments of the game before the players make it back to the locker room. The college football season is finally here, and that means the Buckeyes are back! And so are the question marks. Ohio State opened its 2023 season with a 23-3 win over the Indiana Hoosiers, and while a win is a win, the confidence levels that the fanbase has in the team took a hit. To open things up, Matt Tamanini and Justin Golba discuss the offense and, specifically, the quarterback battle. Because it does not seem to be a battle. Contrary to what head coach Ryan Day said earlier in the week about Kyle McCord and Devin Brown splitting reps, McCord played 98% of the game. We discuss that and the five combined catches for Marvin Harrison Jr., and Emeka Egbuka. However, not all was bad. The defense stepped up to the plate and looked great, allowing just 153 yards of total offense. We discuss the defense as well as our confidence levels that it will translate to better offenses. At the end, we grade the game. Come for the hot takes, stay for the warm ones. On this episode of Hangout in the Holy Land, Josh and Chuck recap Week 1 of the college football season, with an obvious focus on Ohio State. The Buckeyes beat the Indiana Hoosiers by a score of 23-3 in Bloomington, but Ryan Day's team was far from perfect... And that is putting it mildly. It's not even Labor Day, and the hosts are already a teeny, tiny bit concerned about the Scarlet and Gray. Because Week 1 provided more questions than answers, primarily due to odd coaching decisions, lackluster QB play, and a team that seemed to lack identity. So was this opening week jitters, or is Ohio State in for some serious growing and transition pains? The Hangout boys have obvious concerns, but admit and agree that the sky is not falling. After bemoaning the offensive playcalling and performance, the hosts go on to praise the Buckeyes' stingy defense and give credit to at least a few players on the other side of the ball. Forget all that Week 0 nonsense, because now it's for real! Because Ohio State kicks off, of course. A new CFB season means new faces, new questions, and new reasons for optimism... Or pessimism and concern. But the hosts are not too worried about OSU's new starting quarterback. Instead, they want to know if Jim Knowles' defense will turn up the heat and whether Justin Frye's revamped offensive line can protect C.J. Stroud's replacement. Although there are plenty of unknowns in and around Columbus, hopes and expectations are as high as they've ever been. Up first for the Buckeyes are the Indiana Hoosiers, so Josh and Chuck preview a Tom Allen-led IU squad that has struggled in recent seasons.
