In this episode of Hit The Books, Brad Powers and Joey Knish dive into one of the most debated topics in all of college football right now: which head coaches are actually being overrated by the market, the media, and fan perception. The conversation gets heated quickly as they break down the gap between reputation and real results across the sport. Mario Cristobal at Miami comes under the microscope, with discussion around elite recruiting versus actual on-field execution and whether the results truly match the hype. Dabo Swinney's Clemson tenure is also heavily debated, especially as questions continue to grow around whether the program has adapted enough to modern college football after recent down years. The guys also take aim at Lincoln Riley and whether his offensive brilliance is being overshadowed by deeper program-building concerns at USC, especially after expectations shifted following his arrival. Coach Prime and Colorado are brought into the mix as well, focusing on whether early momentum can realistically be sustained in the new transfer portal era or if regression is coming. From there, the debate escalates into some of the biggest names in the sport. Steve Sarkisian at Texas is questioned in terms of win consistency versus roster talent and program investment, while Kirby Smart at Georgia sparks one of the most controversial takes of the episode, with Brad and Joey challenging whether results fully match the national perception of dominance in today's college football landscape.

Coker explains why a 16-team playoff could benefit the SEC, while the guys discuss Greg Sankey's pushback on a larger field, the future of the SEC Championship Game, and whether television networks are influencing the expansion debate. This one is a reminder of some pure gold basics in life. It comes from football coach, Dabo Swinney who said, "It's the optimists who change the world." Success starts with your mindset and what you do every single day. A bad attitude holds you back. A great attitude takes you forward. "The only disability in life is a bad attitude." We all have this disability at times throughout our lives, along with others. Keep trying to be your best as I am doing the same. Coach welcomes NFL game analyst Charles Davis to unpack the legal and collegiate fallout surrounding Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby and his recent gambling allegations. The duo juxtaposes the modern era of college sports—where universities and networks profit directly from gambling partnerships—against the strict bans historically placed on student-athletes. They map out Sorsby's expected legal defense strategy, which could heavily leverage the NCAA's own gambling revenue ties and a focus on mental health, while tackling the immense challenges this poses for administrators, potential court-ordered injunctions, and the way high-value NIL contracts are disrupting mid-contract transfers. The gridiron breakdown continues as college football writer Dennis Dodd joins the show to evaluate the bounce-back potential of former national championship programs. Coach and Dodd dive deep into the current trajectories of Lincoln Riley’s USC, Mike Norvell’s Florida State, and Dabo Swinney’s Clemson, weighing each program's unique recruiting triumphs and critical turn-around pressures. The conversation shifts into a rapid-fire analysis of the latest high-profile coaching carousel moves, assessing Matt Campbell’s transition to Penn State, James Franklin’s arrival at Virginia Tech, and Kyle Whittingham taking the reins at Michigan, alongside a snapshot of recent developments reshaping the Big 12. Dennis Dodd and Tony Barnhart team up with Coach on Football Saturday, opening with a reflection on Memorial Day weekend before shifting focus to the highly consequential SEC spring meetings in Destin. The panel breaks down whether these meetings will rival the historic 1991 expansion in long-term impact, especially if they chart a course toward a 24-team playoff system. Highlighting key insights on influential figures like Georgia President Jerry Morehead and SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey, they examine Morehead's comments on SEC self-governance and potential breakaway from the NCAA. The episode closes with a breakdown of Sankey's methodical data-driven approach to a nine-game conference schedule, a look at Coach Ed Orgeron’s rumored return to the LSU sidelines, and breaking news regarding an active NCAA tampering investigation into Ole Miss stemming from a complaint by Clemson's Dabo Swinney against Pete Golding.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Meet my friends, Clay Travis and Buck Sexton! If you love Verdict, the Clay Travis and Buck Sexton Show might also be in your audio wheelhouse. Politics, news analysis, and some pop culture and comedy thrown in too. Here’s a sample episode recapping four takeaways. Give the guys a listen and then follow and subscribe wherever you get your podcasts. Branding vs. Education Clay Travis and Buck Sexton give an in‑depth critique of the American higher education system, with specific attention to grade inflation, standardized testing, and admissions fairness. The hosts highlight Harvard University’s decision to eliminate widespread grade inflation and reintroduce a bell curve grading model, noting that a large majority of students had been receiving A grades. They trace the historical roots of grade inflation back to the Vietnam War era, when professors were reluctant to assign low grades that could result in students being drafted, and argue that the COVID‑19 pandemic accelerated the trend by lowering academic expectations nationwide. The conversation expands into a broader analysis of elite universities such as Harvard, Yale, and Stanford, comparing traditional grading systems with pass‑fail models used in some law schools. While acknowledging arguments that elite students perform at a higher level, the hosts ultimately contend that grade inflation has eroded academic standards and made it harder to distinguish top performers. This leads into a discussion of the rise and fall of test‑optional admissions policies, which surged during 2020 but were later reversed after colleges found that standardized testing remained one of the most reliable ways to evaluate student readiness. Get Smarter Listening to This Ryan Girdusky joins the show to dissect the Democratic National Committee’s “autopsy” of the 2024 election loss, which returned Donald Trump to the presidency. The hosts highlight dramatic long-term political realignment trends, noting how Democrats have lost significant ground since 2009 across the Senate, House, governorships, and state legislatures, with Republicans gaining dominance in key regions. Girdusky argues the DNC report fails to address critical issues—especially Joe Biden’s age and Kamala Harris’s campaign weaknesses—while crediting effective Trump campaign messaging for reshaping voter perceptions. The discussion underscores how Republican gains, particularly in the South, reflect a broader collapse of historic Democratic strongholds and the lingering impact of the Obama era on local politics. MN Fraud Isn't a One-Off Clay and Buck discuss the breaking news of a major Minnesota fraud case, where the mastermind behind the “Feeding Our Future” scheme is sentenced to more than 41 years in prison for orchestrating a $250 million COVID relief fraud, funds originally intended to feed children. Clay and Buck highlight this case as a symbol of broader systemic government waste, fraud, and abuse, arguing that such large-scale theft underscores failures in federal oversight and accountability. The conversation expands into a critique of government spending and fiscal policy, with the hosts asserting that fraud like this is not an isolated incident but part of a larger trend of mismanagement of taxpayer dollars. They argue that calls from Democrats to raise taxes—particularly on high earners—ignore the core issue of inefficient spending, contending that Americans are already overpaying into a system riddled with waste. This naturally leads into a broader economic debate, including criticism of progressive figures such as Zohran Mamdani and commentary on Jeff Bezos’ public remarks about taxation and public spending, which the hosts use to argue that increasing tax revenue does not necessarily lead to better outcomes in public services like education. After the Sports High... Clay chats with Steve Eubanks, sports journalist and author of “Godball” - the first book to seriously examine the modern surge of public Christian faith in American sports. Steve interviewed high-profile Christian athletes including Scottie Scheffler, Riley Gaines, Kirk Cousins, Jonathan Isaac, Dabo Swinney, and others, allowing them to share—in their own words—the role faith plays in their careers and lives. Steve explores the pivotal moment one Supreme Court case made and offers rare insight from athletes and coaches into this growing revival of faith in sports. Coach is joined by Charles Davis to break down a fascinating wave of high-profile coaching changes and program resets across college football. The guys dive right into the massive musical chairs happening at the top, starting with Matt Campbell taking over a Penn State program that Charles calls "the university of the Northeast". They note that while James Franklin put up great numbers, his struggles in high-profile national games ultimately opened the door for Campbell's elite talent-developing style. Moving over to Michigan, they pull back the curtain on Kyle Whittingham’s unique transition; it turns out Utah was already priming Morgan Scalley as the coach-in-waiting, which essentially allowed Michigan to swoop in and land Whittingham without a massive buyout battle since he had technically stepped down. Down south, they expect Alex Golesh to be a seamless fit with Auburn’s incredibly loyal fanbase thanks to his deep southern recruiting roots and explosive offensive background from Tennessee, while John Sumrall’s jump from Tulane to Florida has them both highly optimistic given his proven knack for elevating programs. To wrap things up, the guys rank three powerhouse programs looking to bounce back under their current leadership. Lincoln Riley’s USC squad takes the #1 spot after glowing spring reports about the trenches looking better than they have in years. Dabo Swinney and Clemson land at #2 as Dabo finally embraces "Realville" by mixing the transfer portal and NIL into his traditional high school recruiting philosophy. At a distant #3 is Mike Norvell’s Florida State team, where the hosts admit they're skeptical of a quick fix since the Seminoles just haven't looked the same since that heartbreaking playoff omission two seasons ago.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this jam-packed episode, Coach is joined by CBS Sports national college football writer Dennis Dodd and analyst Charles Davis to deliver an insider look at the seismic operational, legislative, and coaching shifts rewriting the college sports landscape. The show kicks off with a deep dive into contrasting transfer portal philosophies—pitting Oklahoma State’s massive 80-plus player roster overhaul against Georgia’s selective, high-school-first approach—before Dodd breaks down a pending bipartisan congressional bill that could introduce strict federal oversight and a hard spending cap on athletic rosters. Coach explores how unprecedented financial investments have turned modern athletic facilities into self-contained living spaces to maximize player retention, while also addressing the normalization of coaches using non-traditional media platforms and the urgent need for comprehensive gambling education amid recent player controversies. After lamenting the loss of historic intra-conference rivalries and analyzing how all 16 SEC programs are strategically utilizing the transfer portal, the discussion shifts to a fascinating wave of high-profile coaching resets.
