Some say that Bruce Fitzhugh is the Godfather of Christian Metal and while he would resist that designation, he is certainly at minimum the driving force behind one of Solid State Records' first big successes as the lead vocalist and guitarist from Living Sacrifice. He also is credited as being central in the development of the heavy music scene that gave rise to a very positive culture that emerged in central Arkansas in the 90's, the national scene, and eventually the mainstream.   https://labeledpodcast.com/ Support Labeled on Patreon  Join Labeled on Facebook Pre-order / pre-save Lightworker’s "Fury By Failure," out June 12th :: http://lightworker.ffm.to/fury Follow Lightworker on Spotify :: https://spoti.fi/3fZm8XD   SONGS YOU HEARD ON THIS EPISODE: Living Sacrifice “Reborn Empowered” Living Sacrifice “Nonexistent” Stavesacre “Gold And Silver” Living Sacrifice “Second Death” - Demo Zao “Lies of Serpents, A River Of Tears” Embodyment “Halo of Winter” Living Sacrifice “Reborn Empowered” Live at Cornerstone ’00 Living Sacrifice “Flatline”    MORE FROM TOOTH & NAIL: * Labeled: Music From The Podcast: smarturl.it/labeledplaylist * DISCOVER IT: New Tracks from T&N Records: smarturl.it/TNNDiscover * This Is Solid State: New Tracks from Solid State Records: https://spoti.fi/2CUCsaH    * Tooth & Nail Store (LABELED Patreon members get 20% off everything): tnn.lnk.to/store

He and I wrap up our conversation for about another half an hour and then things get crazy. I read comments and questions from Liam Wilson of Dillinger, Klank of...well...Klank, Mark Garza of Embodyment / The Famine, Darren Johnson and Bruce Fitzhugh of Living Sacrifice, Jeff Bellew of The Crucified / Stavesacre, we hear live from Jeff King and Kevin Leaman of Believer in the room, we get Lance Garvin of Living Sacrifice and the IMPOSSIBLE to find Joey Daub of Believer on the phone to have a four way discussion about "The Phoenix". Chapter 103: "Podcast Empowered" ...as read by Bruce Fitzhugh, Lance Garvin, Chris Truby, Jason Truby and Brandon Ebel Where were you on June 3rd, 1997? (I don't remember either.) But, I know something special that happened that day. A band from Little Rock, Arkansas called Living Sacrifice released their fourth full-length album called "Reborn" on new Tooth & Nail metal spinoff label Solid State Records. People have called this one a game changer; others claim this was Christian metal's first "metal core" album. I personally think this is one of the most important Christian metal albums to ever hit the scene. You are going to hear from all four members who recorded on the album along with executive producer and label owner Brandon Ebel. This massive undertaking began it's planning stages about five months ago and I'd like to personally thank all five guests who took time from busy lives to speak with me. I especially need to thank my partner-in-crime Bryan Patton who is responsible for stitching this thing together for you. It's a biggie. Strap on a paper hat and grab a slice of cake. Today is Reborn's twentieth birthday. (Be sure to stick around to the end; Chad Neptune of Further Seems Forever/Strongarm has something funny to add to this.) Chapter 79: "Burning Ships (Part One)" ...as read by Doug Mann, founder of R.E.X. Music I FOUND HIM! Douglas C Mann! Ok...Bruce Fitzhugh found him. Ok...he's on Facebook so he wasn't exactly hiding. Anyways I am joined by guest host Bruce of Living Sacrifice to speak to the legendary Doug Mann who founded R.E.X Music just after his time in the Coast Guard with $1,200, preceding Tooth And Nail by around seven years. Doug has decided this is his first, last and only interview that he will do concerning R.E.X. so I thank him for letting it unfold on my show. However, as you will hear...it isn't bad blood. I think there was more mystery and drama surrounding it then it deserved. Either way, THIS is the place to hear it and thank you Doug for taking the time. Really fun conversation; Bruce and Doug just run off and hijack the first half! Great Psychoboy studio story. This was a long one so we're gonna split this one in half. Bruce had to leave halfway through so next week there's no guest host...it's just me and Douglas C Mann. This one is definitely R.E.X. heavy and next week is a little more personal about him. Enjoy! Go be Dougs' friend: https://www.facebook.com/douglas.c.mann DJ, call me. It's time. Chapter 79 Music: Celebrating some of my favorite R.E.X. selections. I'm thirteen again. Living Sacrifice: "Enthroned" (from Non-Existent during Dougs' tenure at R.E.X.) Sacrament: "Testimony Of Apocalypse" (LOVED this album.) Believer: "Unite" (demo from 1987 (love that "tape hiss") then a little from the Extraction From Mortality LP) Living Sacrifice: "Breathing Murder" (SPITE! Haha. It'll make sense in context.) DC Talk: "Jesus Freak" (Doug worked A and R for one of the biggest Christian releases ever. That's a thing.) Iona: "Treasure" (from the album "Beyond These Shores, which Doug worked on with the band at Forefront.) Circle Of Dust: "Deviate: Metamorphosis Remix" (this was after Doug but it was a HUGE album for R.E.X.) Bruce Fitzhugh of Living Sacrifice joins the story with many of his own stories. Ya'll ain't gunna believe this one. LOTS of music in this chapter. We discuss Mark Fields, Stryper, live Quicksand and Hum. Trav embarrasses himself with a story that Bruce can't even remember. Fitzhugh talks about what he's doing now at Manhead Merch. We discuss a lot of older Living Sacrifice, DJ, early albums...lots of old school Living Sacrifice fans will dig this stuff. Bruce Fitzhugh was heavily influenced by the DC scene and it pokes it's head in a lot of places you may not expect it. Bruce gets into the R.E.X. debacle and what lead Living Sacrifice to Solid State (...turns out Brandon Ebel may be a stalker.) Then...the news we've been dying to drop on the audience: it turns out we are at war. A Holy War. Bruce Fitzhugh discusses...the punishment due. Just listen all the way to the end. It'll make sense.
