Step into the world of late medieval Catholicism and discover the spiritual crisis that shaped one of history's most influential reformers. In this episode, Dr. Alan Strange takes us through Martin Luther's early years—from his tormented life as an Augustinian monk to his life-changing encounter with Romans 1:17.We explore the complex religious landscape Luther inherited, where salvation seemed locked behind a system of sacraments, purgatory, and papal indulgences. In Luther's life, we see the internal struggle of a man so desperate for righteousness that he nearly destroyed his health through extreme ascetic practices, only to discover that the righteousness God requires, He freely gives as a gift received by faith alone.

Welcome to The Daily, where we study the Bible verse by verse, chapter by chapter, every day. And today's shout-out goes to Cory Baron from North Oaks, MN. Cory, thank you for standing with us through Project23. Your commitment is helping others step out of darkness and into the light. This one's for you. Our text today is Mark 5:1-5: They came to the other side of the sea, to the country of the Gerasenes. And when Jesus had stepped out of the boat, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit. He lived among the tombs. And no one could bind him anymore, not even with a chain, for he had often been bound with shackles and chains, but he wrenched the chains apart, and he broke the shackles in pieces. No one had the strength to subdue him. Night and day among the tombs and on the mountains he was always crying out and cutting himself with stones. — Mark 5:1-5 Jesus and his disciples land in Gentile territory—on the far side of the sea. And the moment they step out of the boat, they're met by a man. But not just any man. He's a strange man who lives among the dead. He's naked. Bleeding. Tormented. Possessed by a legion of demons. (A legion was about 6,000—so this was a case of extreme demonization.) We read that no one could bind him. Not with ropes. Not even with chains. He had legion-like strength—and a soul consumed by suffering. So he lived alone. Crying out. Cutting himself. Unreachable. Unrestrained. Unhealed. This is what evil does. When we give ourselves over to it, evil isolates. It dehumanizes. It pulls us away from people—and pushes us further from peace. But notice—Jesus went out of his way to reach this far-out man. He crossed a violent sea to reach a violent man in a foreign land. To reach an outcast, everyone else had given up on. Jesus doesn't move away from the broken. He moves toward them. Maybe today you feel like this man—alone, tormented, ashamed. Or maybe you've written someone off, thinking they're too far gone. You're wrong. No one is too far from Jesus—not you, not them. Because Jesus can reach anyone, anywhere, at any time. Today, if you've drifted—come back to Jesus, the one who came for you. And if you've given up on someone—don't. Pray that God would send someone who represents Him to move close. Or ask Him if that someone is you. #TheDaily #Mark5 #JesusHeals #NoOneTooFarGone #FreedomInChrist #ComeBackToJesus ASK THIS: What does this man's condition reveal about the power of evil? How does Jesus' arrival in this scene reflect His character and mission? Have you ever felt unreachable—or believed someone else was? What would it look like for Jesus to step into that place today? DO THIS: Think of one person (maybe it's even you) who seems beyond hope—and pray specifically for Jesus to move toward them in power, just as He did for the man among the tombs. PRAY THIS: Jesus, thank you for stepping into places no one else would. Help me believe you can reach anyone—including me. And help me not to give up on those who still need your touch. Amen. PLAY THIS: "Rescue" by Lauren Daigle.

Send us a textWelcome to Celebrate Poe - Episode 375 - TormentedI have the ghost of Mr. Poe here - and I would like to ask Mr. Poe a very basic question that many readers of your work have - Mr. Poe - why did you use so much gruesome imagery in your works - imagery that would be difficult for many readers in the mid19th century to handle.Ah, Mr. Bartley, my use of gruesome imagery often served as a metaphor for societal or existential concerns. For example, stories such as "The Masque of the Red Death" critique human arrogance in the face of mortality, while "The Fall of the House of Usher" symbolizes decay—both personal and societal. My works frequently challenge sentimental literature by presenting death not as a redemptive force but as an inevitable and horrifying reality.Yes, Mr. Poe - I am finding out everyday that your works are incredibly complex.Thank you for experiencing Celebrate Poe.

In this absolute stunner of a show Whitley interviews Elvis expert Miguel Conner about Elvis as a brilliant, deeply informed and powerful master of the occult. Few people outside of his inner circle knew this side of Elvis's life, which began when a blue light hovered over the family's small cottage as he was being born. This most popular of singer and a true cultural revolutionary was not only a good and generous man, he was also a well read and deeply informed esotericist, in search of his own meaning. Tormented both by the isolation his celebrity brought him and his longing to reunite with his twin who had died in childbirth, he gradually drifted into heavy drug use and his tragic death at the age of just 42. What happens when a psychic medium has an unexpected encounter with Jesus—and everything changes? In this powerful and eye-opening episode of "Into the Supernatural," actress Jen Lilley and journalist Billy Hallowell sit down with Jenn Nizza, a former tarot card reader and medium who was deeply entrenched in the occult for years. Jenn doesn't hold back as she shares her shocking journey from deception to deliverance. It all began at 13 with a tarot card reading—what followed was a dark descent into New Age practices, witchcraft, and false light that seemed “helpful,” but masked something far more sinister.Jenn explains how demonic spirits offer accurate information—not because they know the future, but because they watch us. She exposes how the enemy plants “counterfeit prophecy” and uses spiritual deception to manipulate emotions, relationships, and even personal identity. But Jenn's story doesn't end in darkness—it turns when, in a moment of desperation, she unexpectedly cries out to Jesus… and everything shifts.Hear the incredible details of her radical transformation. If you've ever wondered about psychics, “harmless” tarot readings, or the spiritual realm—don't miss this one. Jenn's story will challenge you, convict you, and above all, point you straight to Jesus.

"From Thrace, his worldly name being Anastasios, he was a slave to some Turks, and they compelled him to embrace Islam in Smyrna. As a penitent, he was tonsured at the monastery of Esphigmenou on the Holy Mountain. Tormented by his conscience, he desired to wash his sins in his own blood, so he went to Smyrna, where he showed a Cross and an icon of Christ's Resurrection to the Turks. He was beheaded on April 19th, 1819, at the age of nineteen. He appeared to his spiritual father, Germanos, after his death." (Prologue)

It follows Robert, a man haunted by nightmares of his conjoined twin brother, Douglas, who died thirty years prior. “RICHARD CARLSON: CLASSIC CINEMA STAR OF THE MONTH” (081) - 3/31/2025 Tall, dark-haired, and handsome, RICHARD CARLSON was always a welcomed addition to any cast. From the beginning, when he was playing preppy college students opposite LANA TURNER, to his reign in the 1950s as the King of Sci-Fi thrillers, Carlson brought believability and authority to each role but also a sense of introspective thoughtfulness. You looked into his deep blue eyes and chiseled face and believed him. Whatever he was selling, we were buying. And while he never became an A-list leading man, he enjoyed a long and steady career and enhanced many a mediocre film with his special appeal. This week, we celebrate RICHARD CARLSON as our Star of the Month. Spring means baseball is back in my life, and if there's anything that's almost as good as baseball, it's writing about baseball. There is so much good writing about baseball – music, poetry, literature, biography, essay, plays, movie scripts. Something about the combination sport's long history, its leisurely pace, its connection to childhood, its outdoor setting in beautiful weather, its daily rhythm make it such a fruitful topic in American arts and letters. Our guest today, the writer John W. Miller, has entered the pantheon of great baseball writing with his new biography of Earl Weaver, manager of the Baltimore Orioles from 1968 to 1982 and one of the game's most colorful figures ever. The book, which is titled “The Last Manager: How Earl Weaver Tricked, Tormented, and Reinvented Baseball” is so good that it shot up to number 7 on the New York Times bestseller list the week after it was released. And it's not just for baseball fans, either – it's a fascinating snapshot of American culture in the middle of the 20th century and a striking portrait of an almost Shakespearean-level character. John is not only a New York Times bestselling author. He's also a contributing writer to America Magazine and one of the most devoted members of our Jesuit Media Lab community. (He even put the JML in the book's acknowledgments section!) Host Mike Jordan Laskey asked John to tell us about Earl Weaver and to describe his reporting and writing process. They also talked about the spirituality of baseball and biography writing. Get a copy wherever books are sold, and have a great Opening Day. Most people vastly underestimate the spiritual power of music, both for good and for evil. The Spirit of God had departed from Saul, and he was now being tormented by an evil spirit. Whenever Saul was tormented, David played, and the evil spirit departed from Saul. Then, they discuss how Earl Weaver is really the origin story of Moneyball, underappreciated components of Weaver's legacy, and how Weaver would fair as a manager in baseball today (18:06). Finally, Jim assists John in building a Mount Rushmore of people named Earl (37:23).

A Monster Tormented Them For YearsFrom 1977 to 1979, a family living in a remote house near the San Bernardino County mountains in Yucaipa, California, experienced repeated encounters with a mysterious creature they believed to be Bigfoot. The disturbances began one winter night with loud thuds on the roof, followed by sightings of a massive, hairy, bipedal figure that crossed roads, leapt fences, and lingered near their chimney. The creature's presence escalated over time, marked by foul odors wafting through open windows, blocked views of distant lights, and even direct confrontations, including a terrifying moment when it stared at the narrator's father through a window. Despite attempts to scare it off with shotguns and group pursuits, the creature persisted, harassing the family nightly—hitting the house, testing doors, and leaping off the roof—leaving them in constant fear until they moved out in 1979, an event the narrator, then a child, recalls as the happiest day of their life.Join my Supporters Club for $4.99 per month for exclusive stories:https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/what-if-it-s-true-podcast--5445587/support

In our walk with God, we often experience different levels of passion—sometimes we seek Him fervently like Zacchaeus, and other times life's challenges or distractions push God to the background. The story of Job reminds us that even when God's answers to our prayers are not what we hoped for, we must continue seeking Him passionately. Just as our passions in life are reflected by the time and effort we invest, our relationship with God should be intentional, making Him a priority through prayer, reading Scripture, and treating others with love. Ultimately, seeking God passionately leads to a deeper experience and understanding of Him.Topic: Seeking God | Trials | Prioritizing God | Spiritual | Main Scripture: Luke 19:1-4; Job 23:8-10Support the show ------------------------------------------WANT MORE?Say You Love Me 1: Building Healthy RelationshipsToxic 1: What are Toxic Thoughts? He was the son of Eutropius, a prominent senator, and Theodora, who lived in Constantinople. At the age of twelve, he secretly fled his home, taking nothing but a Gospel book with him. Entering the Monastery of the Unsleeping Ones in the City, he gave himself up with fervor to a life of prayer, self-denial and obedience. For three years he ate only on Sundays after taking communion, and became so thin and haggard that he bore no resemblance to the young nobleman who had entered the monastery. Tormented by longing to see his parents, but unwilling to give up the ascetic struggle, he left the monastery with his Abbot's blessing, dressed in beggar's rags, and took up residence in a poor hut near the gate of his parents' house. Here he lived, mocked by those who had once been his servants and despised by his own parents, who no longer recognized him. After three years, Christ appeared to him and told him that his end was drawing near, and that in three days angels would come to take him home. John sent a message to his parents, asking them to visit his hut. In perplexity, they came, and John, showing them the Gospel book that they had given him as a child, revealed to them that he was their son, and that he was about to die. They embraced him, rejoicing at their reunion but weeping for his departure from this life. Immediately, he gave back his soul to God. The whole City of Constantinople was stirred by the story, and great crowds came to John's burial service. A church was later built on the site of his hut, and many miracles were wrought there through the Saint's prayers.
