In this week’s episode of Dem Vinyl Boyz, we’re diving into the thrash metal battleground with Megadeth’s explosive fourth album, Rust in Peace. Released on September 24, 1990, this record not only cemented Megadeth’s legacy as one of the "Big Four" of thrash (alongside Metallica, Slayer, and Anthrax), but it also pushed the genre into technically masterful and politically charged territory. This was Dave Mustaine’s first album featuring lead guitarist Marty Friedman and drummer Nick Menza, forming what many consider the band’s ultimate lineup. From the opening riff of "Holy Wars... The Punishment Due" to the laser-precise fretwork on "Hangar 18," Rust in Peace is a relentless assault of speed, complexity, and precision. Mustaine’s songwriting balances anti-war themes, conspiracy theories, and dystopian visions — and wraps them in some of the most intricate metal arrangements ever pressed to wax. The album received widespread critical acclaim and is now regarded as a cornerstone of thrash metal, earning Grammy nominations and spots on numerous “greatest albums” lists. It’s a record that influenced not just metalheads, but also shaped the evolution of progressive and technical metal for decades to come. Whether you’re a longtime fan or experiencing it for the first time, Rust in Peace is more than an album — it’s a mission statement from a band firing on all cylinders and changing the game in the process.

“We can't ever talk about this so let's talk about not talking about it when we're talking about it…” Released on July 14th, 1992, COUNTDOWN TO EXTINCTION, the 5th MEGADETH album (and the 2nd to feature “the classic lineup” of Dave Mustaine, David Ellefson, Marty Friedman, and Nick Menza) would become the follow up to “one of the most perfect thrash albums of all time”, featuring a more streamlined, simplified, straight forward approach which served as a sonic palette cleanser to the progressive thrash complexity of 1990's masterpiece, Rust In Peace. Simply stated, COUNTDOWN TO EXTINCTION is complex in its simplicity. Even though this might be the most offensive episode we've ever made, we'd like to remind everyone that we're still all about “rainbows and peaches” even though we've emphatically stated for the record that “we're not gonna talk about it”.  Remember proper cell phone etiquette to avoid being bothersome to others, prepare yourself for “The Average Double-Team”, head on down to Dangol County for some “High Speed Dirt”, and last but not least, find out “how to get out of offending anybody” when you “go pick up some honkies” and JOIN US as we start the clock and begin our analysis of MEGADETH's COUNTDOWN TO EXTINCTION.   Visit www.metalnerdery.com/podcast for more on this episode Help Support Metal Nerdery https://www.patreon.com/metalnerderypodcast Leave us a Voicemail to be played on a future episode: 980-666-8182 Metal Nerdery Tees and Hoodies – metalnerdery.com/merch and kindly leave us a review and/or rating on your favorite Podcast app Follow us on the Socials: Facebook - Instagram - TikTok Email: metalnerdery@gmail.com Can't be LOUD Enough Playlist on Spotify Metal Nerdery Munchies on YouTube @metalnerderypodcast   Show Notes: (00:01): “We're not gonna talk about it…but you always wanna talk about it…” / “We can't ever talk about this so let's talk about not talking about it when we're talking about it…”/ “Rainbows and peaches, dude…”/ #buttstuff / “It's more peach-like in flavor…”/ #KoolAidMan / “Is she a #Redskin?” / “Is it the Washington Nationals?” (NOTE: It's the Commanders.) / #RacistReflections and using your phone in public (where EVERYONE can hear your music, your conversations, etc.) / “So is it racist…?” / “Do you know where #honky comes from?” / “Why don't we have better slurs?” / #beeroftheepisode / “Let's go pick up some honkies and go out and do some stuff…” / ***WARNING: #listenerdiscretionisadvised    (07:27): ***WELCOME BACK TO THE METAL NERDERY PODCAST!!!*** / #DreamReflections / “Has anybody caught the new #KingOfTheHill…?” / #RussellsReflectionsNostalgiaEdition / “He LEANS into it…”/ #onmicburp / “King of Hill…”/ #InMemoriam / “There's some conspiracy…”/ “They're selling their #voicerights to AI…”/ #DangolCounty / “Dude…the Average Double-team…that's our new podcast…that's this side of the table…”/ #TheAverageDoubleteam   (14:44): ***JOIN US on the Socials at #Facebook #Instagram #YouTube and #TikTok at #metalnerderypodcast and EMAIL US at metalnerdery@gmail.com and VOICEMAIL US at 980-666-8182!!!*** / ***PATREON US at patreon.com/metalnerderypodcast *** / #BunkerpoonRequestLine / #PatreonShoutOut / “We'll do 3 solo episodes…kinda like the solo albums…”   (17:11): #TheDocket METAL NERDERY PODCAST PRESENTS: MEGADETH – COUNTDOWN TO EXTINCTION / “Can you believe it's been 33 years!?” / July 14th, 1992 / #wisdomteeth and #drysockets / “I remember I had these tea leaves…”/ “When they pulled it out…it was purple…”/ “Do you hear that? Who's up for some thrash metal?Megadeth is one of the founding bands of the thrash metal genre, and considered one of the "big four" of U.S. thrash metal (along with Anthrax, Metallica, and Slayer).  The heart of the band, primary songwriter, and sole constant member of the band throughout the years is Dave Mustaine.  The formation of the band is well known as a revenge effort on Mustaine's part.  He was fired from his role as lead guitarist of Metallica just prior to the recording of their debut album due to personal issues with James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich, and due to drug abuse problems.  The name of the group was inspired by a political pamphlet from Alan Cranston that read "The arsenal of megadeath can't be rid no matter what the peace treaties come to."  Mustaine took the word out of that pamphlet and adjusted the spelling.Rust In Peace is the group's fourth studio album, released in late September but featured in November as it was gaining traction with fans at the time.  The album name came from a bumper sticker Mustaine saw that read, "May all your nuclear weapons rust in peace."  It was the first album to feature Marty Friedman on guitar and Nick Menza on drums.  Dave Mustaine is on guitars and lead vocals, and long time collaborator David Ellefson completes the quartet on bass and backing vocals. The album takes on a number of topics including religion, plitics, warfare, and personal issues Dave Mustaine was dealing with such as drug and alcohol addiction.  Mustaine explored a number of religious expressions over his life, and became a born again Christian after attending Alcoholics Anonymous meetings and focusing on his Christian faith.  Lynch brings us this hallmark album of thrash metal in this week's podcast Holy Wars...the Punishment DueThe opening track starts fast, shifts to a slower acoustic bridge, and finishes at a higher speed.  The lyrics discuss religious conflict with particular attention being paid to the situations in Israel and Northern Ireland.  The subtitle "the Punishment Due" is a reference to the Marvel comic book character called the Punisher.  It was the first single released from the album  Hangar 18The second single is the second track from the album, and was inspired by the Roswell alien conspiracy theory.  Hangar 18 is supposedly located at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, and was believed to be the location where an alien spacecraft and/or bodies were stored.Tornado of SoulsThis is a somewhat deeper cut since it was never released as a single, but it is considered a staple of the band's discography.  Marty Friedman's guitar solo in this piece is considered one of the best metal solos of all time, and one of the hardest to play.  Bassist David Ellefson co-wrote the lyrics, making it one of the few songs on the album not written by Mustane alone.Rust in Peace...PolarisThe concluding song reflects the album title.  It is written from the perspective of a Polaris nuclear weapon, and reflects the catastrophic consequences of nuclear warfare.   ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Shotgun by Junior Walker & The All Stars (from the motion picture “Misery”)This movie based on the Stephen King novel starring James Caan and Kathy Bates would win Bates an Oscar for Best Actress. STAFF PICKS:Full Circle by the Jeff Healey BandRob starts the staff pick with this blues-infused pick which is the lead track to the Jeff Healey Band's second album, "Hell to Pay."  Bobby Whitlock, a member of the supergroup Derek and the Dominos is playing the Hammond organ on this piece.  Jeff Healey, blind since an early age, was known for holding his guitar in his lap while playing.Vigilante Man by Hindu Love GodsWayne's staff pick is a bit of a super group.  Warren Zevon got together with the members of REM minus Michael Stipe to create this single album on a lark.  The group recorded old standards for the album, and this one was originally done by Woody Guthrie in 1940.  The song itslef is about hired thugs who would chase away migrants trying to escape the Dust Bowl by moving to California.Traveling Riverside Blues by Led ZeppelinBruce features another cover song, this one written by Robert Johnson in 1937.  Led Zeppelin recorded it in 1969, but it was not released until 1990, over ten years after "Fool in the Rain," their last single.  It hit number 7 on the Billboard Top Rock Tracks chart in November 1990.Blaze of Glory by Jon Bon JoviLynch finishes the staff picks with a rock ballad containing elements of country and western, written for the motion picture "Young Guns II."  It won the Golden Globe award for Best Original Song, and topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart, making it one of Bon Jovi's most successful solo hits. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Theme from the motion picture "Dances with Wolves" by the Royal Scots Dragoon GuardsThis cinematic piece accompanied the Kevin Costner Western which was out in 1990. With the release of their 4th album (a.k.a. one of the finest albums in thrash metal history), MEGADETH conquered new levels of greatness with their progressive thrash masterpiece RUST IN PEACE, featuring Marty Friedman on guitars and Nick Menza behind the drum kit who, along with founding members David Ellefson and Dave Mustaine, would become known as “the classic lineup” of the legendary band.   Jam packed with crushing riffs, majestic guitar solos, and vivid lyrical imagery, RUST IN PEACE might very well be MEGADETH's “Master of Justice…And Puppets for All” in terms of sheer technicality and progressive thrash craftsmanship. In short, RUST IN PEACE forever altered the thrash metal genre and raised the bar in terms of sheer musicianship, arrangement, and presentation.   Discover the glaring difference between thrash and “heavy metal” and understand why “you gotta fluff first” in order to “build desire” and “keep up with the algorithm”. Interview by Kris PetersMegadeth are one of the few bands in the world - of any genre - that need no introduction. For four decades they have been at the forefront of the metal landscape, with their most recent album The Sick, The Dying and The Dead their highest selling to date. Whereas most bands plateau somewhat or more often decline in the back end of their career Megadeth are doing the exact opposite.Which makes frontman Dave Mustaine one happy camper. Now, after nearly eight years, Megadeth are poised to return to Australia as part of Knotfest from March 24 to 26, with two side shows also scheduled for Adelaide and Melbourne.Which makes Mustaine even happier.HEAVY sat down for an awesome chat with the great man earlier this morning for a frank and open discussion about anything and everything. One of the topics of conversation was what has changed with Megadeth since their last venture Down Under in 2015."Well, ALOT," he laughed. "We've had some lineup changes and every time we do that the person that came in was better. When we parted ways with the drummer before Dirk (Verbeuren) - it was the person before Chris Adler, which was Shawn Drover - we tried to get the Rust In Peace line-up back together but it didn't work because Nick (Menza) went off one way and we went off the other. We contacted Adler and asked if he would play on the record and maybe contact Nick again and have him tour with us because he couldn't really do the record. That didn't work out either, so we had Chris do the record and stay, and while we were doing that Chris and his band parted ways and we didn't know if Chris was going to stay with us or stay with them. Of course, we wanted him to stay with Lamb Of God and I'm sad that he left and there's any kind of distance between the family. I do think that Art (Cruz) is an amazing drummer and then after that Chris Adler recommended Dirk, and Dirk is - in my mind - the best drummer we've had since Gar Samuelson. He's a big fan of Gar, and that is the power that drives Megadeth. Jazz metal, not rock metal. Nick was a super talented and powerful drummer and he fortunately was able to do a lot of those jazz hooks too, so we almost had that magic that we did when Gar was there. But we definitely had something which Gar did not, which was the power that Nick Menza possessed. Same thing can go down the line with the bass playing. (Dave) Ellefson was in the band, then was out. James (LoMenzo) came in, he was out. Ellefson came back because the Drover brothers kept pressuring me to do this, get Ellefson back. He came in and we had that weird shit that happened. I had Steve Di Giorgio come in and record the record and James is back and I love that he's back. The singing is fabulous on stage. He actually can sing really well, so he helps encourage me to sing. And then Kiko (Loureiro, guitars) as you know... I parted ways with Chris Broderick - I mean where do you go from having Marty Friedman and Chris Poland and it's time to make a guitar player change again? So Kiko, I saw a video on line of Kiko actually being put head to head against Chris Broderick, someone made a video of that, and I watched it and I went fuck I gotta get in touch with this guy. The funny thing is that when I contacted him he said that he had been talking to Ellefson, so when I talked to Ellefson the next time I said what the fucks wrong with you, man? Why didn't you tell me you know this guy(laughs)? So that was a great addition to the band. Kiko and James play really well together and Kiko and Dirk have an amazing ability to play those crazy riffs together. Of course, we can always be better, so we all go into the jam room every day and try and work on little bits and pieces of a song and our record producer is out with us on the road as our music director keeping our chops up."In the full interview, Dave talks about being part of Knotfest, the two sideshows and how they will differ from the festival shows, forty years in the music industry, listening to your body when it comes to performing, the increasing difficulty in coming up with a set list to keep fans happy, the early days of Megadeth and the musical climate that gave birth to the band, becoming more understanding of your environment with experience, musical trends and how they have affected Megadeth, what he hopes to leave as the band's musical legacy, the top three Commandments of Metal and more.

FROM ASHES TO NEW hail from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, with musician Matt Brandyberry being the founding and sole constant member of the group. The band has released three studio albums, being Day One (2016), The Future (2018), and Panic (2020).  FROM ASHES TO NEW recently delivered an intense and captivating new single “Nightmare,” taken from their upcoming as-yet-titled fourth studio album which is due this summer via Better Noise Music. “Nightmare” masterfully showcases the dual vocal abilities of Brandyberry and singer Danny Case in contrasting heavy rock anthemic choruses with nu-metal/rap rock verses.  “Betrayal by someone we trust happens to the best of us,” says Case. “We befriend someone, let them in, build a connection and then all of a sudden they turn into someone unrecognizable. Someone you once trusted and cared for so deeply is now a backstabbing enemy. In a heartbeat, the person you once thought you knew is now gone. There aren't many things in life that cut quite as deep as betrayal. Erasing that person from your life and moving forward is the only way to wake up from the nightmare.” In the interview, Danny talks about the upcoming album, how he was brought into the band, appearing in a horror movie and more. Also, host Scott Penfold discusses the recent reunion between MEGADETH and former guitarist Marty Friedman which recently took place in Tokyo, Japan. Fans of the "Rust In Peace" era of the band were definitely looking forward to Marty's appearance and Dave Mustaine and comany definitely delivered at the legendary Budokan.

Jeff and Jobe explore the conundrum of liking music made by unsavory individuals (including a Beatle!). They discuss where the line is between being a truly bad person vs. simply an asshole, why junkies always seem to cap their drug habits at $1000 a day, and Jobee's disinterest in Jeff's picks goes full bore. There's also music from Ruby Gill, Nefyn in the Unsigned Artist Spotlight, and Jeff reluctantly agrees that there might be two Megadeth songs on Rust In Peace that don't suck.
