Food Episode #4

This week's episode of the Shelf Life podcast is all about FOOD in the Central District. Through community stories, we'll explore the ways that food has brought neighbors together. Whether we're hearing stories about family gatherings, first jobs, the Promenade Red Apple, or the Black Panther breakfast program - food is the common denominator. Through food, the neighborhood forged community, built an economy, and resisted discrimination. How To Listen: Find the podcast on iTunes or Soundcloud or our website: www.shelflifestories.com/podcast/ New episodes every Thursday! Shelf Life uses community stories to amplify, preserve, and learn from the voices, experiences, and histories of Seattle’s Central District neighborhood. For decades, the CD was the only neighborhood where African Americans were allowed to live. Despite all kinds of obstacles, like job discrimination and predatory lending, people in this neighborhood managed to thrive, innovate, and contribute so much to this city. But now, with all the change happening in Seattle, Central District residents - and their businesses and families and community gathering places - are being displaced SO FAST. We hope that neighborhood stories can inform the way we think about community - what it means to have it, and what it means to lose it. And we hope these stories can shift the way we talk about displacement and gentrification and change, in our city, and in cities across the country! . This podcast is brought to you by King County 4Culture. Original score by Bubba Jones.

What if neighborhood stories could change the way we think about community - what it means to have it, and what it means to lose it? Shelf Life is a podcast that uses community stories to amplify, preserve, and learn from the voices, experiences, and histories of Seattle’s Central District neighborhood - also known as the CD!! When most people think of Seattle and music, a few big names come to mind: Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Quincy Jones, Jimi Hendrix, Kenny G, maybe Sir Mix-A-Lot and likely Macklemore. But have you ever heard of Cold, Bold, and Together? What about Family Affair? While Seattle may be known for grunge and rock, the Central District also colored the city’s musical landscape with funk, soul, and jazz. The CD was also home to a lot of artists, and many of them acted as community leaders, creating programs and opportunities for Central District youth to become artists too. It was a creative and inspiring place for painters, actors, dancers, and many other kinds of artists. On today’s episode of the Shelf Life Podcast, we hear about all things music, theater, and art that came out of the Central District. The Shelf Life Podcast is produced by Mayowa Aina, Domonique Meeks, and Jill Freidberg. Original score by Bubba Jones. Funding for this podcast from King County 4Culture.

Mighty Blue On The Appalachian Trail: The Ultimate Mid-Life Crisis

When Jeff Alt set out to fulfil a long-held dream and hike the Appalachian Trail in 1998, he could have had no idea that his walk would eventually become the catalyst for a wonderful fund-raising effort that continues to this day. He raises money for Sunshine Homes, a facility that has been home to his brother Aaron for much of his life.   Not only did he raise an enormous amount of money for this worthy cause, he became a writer and acclaimed speaker on the back of that singular decision to step onto the Appalachian Trail. He even appeared as a speaker in a Tedx talk. Click on the link to hear his story. He also offers National Park lectures that are free to attend. Click on this link to see an upcoming event in Shenandoah National Park. As you can see below, Jeff also has a very interesting wedding photo!!     You can learn a lot about Jeff's myriad interests and adventures by going to his website and, if you have youngsters interested in hiking, check out the official site for his "The Adventures of Bubba Jones" book series. Of course, he is also on Facebook.     With the amount of books that Jeff has written, it seems sensible just to link you to his Amazon author page, where you can check out his books, including A Walk For Sunshine.     The lovely Kelly Anderson, who we met back in episode #40, spoke with me to let me know how her thru-hike ended. She is always enthusiastic and entertaining to talk with and this was no exception.   Lastly, please come and visit (then like) my Mighty Blue on the Appalachian Trail Facebook page. I intend to do a lot more with this page in the future, so stay tuned.

The BGP is a Northwest outfit that doesn’t sound like they are from The Northwest. Their sound flows through cities like New Orleans, Memphis, Atlanta, NY or Philly; it is definitely not the Puget Sound, if you dig. One could say that this group of friends and accomplished musicians plays a very sophisticated yet accessible brand of soul pop and rock. The truth is The BGP defies categorization. Oh sure you hear the influences but the boys have their own thing goin’ on and have for several years. Allen Stone used to open for them. The BGP opened for Fitz and The Tantrums who were playing their coming out party before achieving local and global success. These talented group of cats also appeared on national TV on America’s Got Talent. Over the course of their time together they have released an EP and a handful of singles. It all started when they released their debut EP, titled Love & Rent, in 2010. After a very successful Kickstarter campaign, the group has released their second EP, titled Fort Knox, in late 2015. The BGP is a band we have championed for almost 6 years. We have watched and heard them evolve during that time. It was an honor to have them kick off the musical portion of our 5 year Anniversary party last summer at Rhapsody World Headquarters in Seattle. We did so because we love their sound and you couldn’t meet a cooler bunch of fellas. The BGP will play their first show of the new year at the legendary Neumos on Capitol Hill on Wednesday, January 20th. Also on the bill will be Down North and Bardot. Tickets are available here. We have interviewed The BGP for past episodes of SMI Radio. We finally got the group to come into Critical Sun Studios for a live in-studio session and interview. The full interview and performances can be heard by clicking the player below. We invite you to take a look at their live performances of “Uhmerica,” “Normal Things,” and “VCR” engineered by Bubba Jones of Critical Sun Recordings with the video production and photo gallery courtesy of Jason Tang.

Lemolo’s last effort, The Kaleidoscope, released in 2013, was a critical success and one of our favorite releases of the year. The follow up, Red Right Return has been highly anticipated by fans and press alike. I have heard the new disc, and it is a brilliant collection of highly addictive, progressive, dream-pop ditties. After a few listens, it is obvious that Meagan Grandall has grown as a songwriter, arranger and musician. On the newest record, the songs and arrangements are more complex, and the soundscapes more lush. Seattle Rock Orchestra and Sisters’ very own Emily Westman performed on the new record and, along with Grandall, put together a heavier sound while still maintaining the trademark Lemolo sonic tapestry and dreamy vibe. Grandall’s musical journey has taken her on an interesting path that has led her to discover her true voice, which is beautifully on display on Lemolo’s newest release. Lemolo will celebrate the release of their new disc, Red Right Return on Friday, November 6 at 8:00 p.m. at an all-ages show at The Crocodile. Also on the bill is the amazing Maiah Manser and Mimicking Birds. Tickets for the show are available here. For our first SMI Radio episode of the fall season, we welcome Lemolo into Critical Sun Studio who will talk about Red Right Return, and perform a few songs from the record. Lemolo’s Grandall and drummer Adrian Centoni talk about the evolution of the sound and songwriting, as well as some of the distinctions between their new, highly touted release, The Kaleidoscope.

“It just so happens that the family business is Black liberation,” photographer and filmmaker Inye Wokoma tells Trae in EPISODE THREE of EQUITY RISING. Inye and three other Seattle artists founded Wa Na Wari in 2019, inside a Central District neighborhood home that once belonged to his grandparents. The location, and the generational history, is key to understanding what this important and imaginative arts organization is all about: “reclaiming Black cultural spaces and making a statement about the importance of Black land ownership in gentrified communities.” Trae and Inye talk about arts as an engine of change, the specific goals and gifts of Wa Na Wari, and the land reclamation movement through an “open source” lens.  Learn more about Wa Na Wari and their events and current exhibits. You can also follow them on Facebook and Instagram. Visit Inye's personal art website. Seattle musician Bubba Jones provides a beautiful Chime-In this week, reflecting on his lifelong friend's ability to put an idea into the world, and then actually bring that idea into action.
