We can't wait to runcation with you soon! RUN On Saturday, Aimee ran the Tunnel to Towers 5K in Fort Myers on the Florida Southwestern State College campus. The cause and organization has a motto: “While we have time, let us do good.” We did support a great cause at that race weekend, and this foundation supports our country's heroes and their families. Their contribution is mortgage-free homes to families of fallen heroes, those injured serving our great nation in our military. This organization supports police officers, firefighters, and first responders in the same way. It was a moving tribute to open the race and a safe, closed course on the college campus. The medal and shirt were well done, too. The best part is that these 5K foot races are run nationwide, so chances are one is near you if you want to participate and support a great organization. Find out more about the race and the Tunnel to Towers Foundation at these links: https://runsignup.com/Race/FL/FortMyers/TunneltoTowers5KRunWalkFortMyersFL https://t2t.org/ EAT The post-race party brought tasty chicken wings from a place called Glory Days. These were smoked and seasoned with their special dry-rub recipe. Plus, the staff serving these delicious and smoky offerings were so friendly. They provided post-race water, too. It was a protein-packed post-race offering. Maryland, West Virginia, Virginia, and Georgia have locations, too. You can have these and a great margarita, their restaurants, and much more! If you needed carbs, bagels were only two steps away at the next booth, provided by The Bagel Factory. This is a local bagel place with all sorts of tasty bagels and cream cheese spreads in various flavors, even pumpkin available now that it is fall, too! DRINK We are on hiatus right now from enjoying cocktails, beer, or wine as we start to ramp up our training again. Dana is testing a new beverage that serves as a meal and can also support our training and recovery. We are getting into the heart of our training to return to the Disneyland races with the Dumbo Double Dare Challenge (a 10K and Half Marathon Challenge). Often, we need a protein-packed meal but have little time to make it. Other protein shakes we have tried are chalky, and some have an artificial aftertaste. Dana researched and looked for better. Enter The Whole Feast. It is all-natural and packs 21 grams of protein per serving, but Dana says it is the best-tasting protein shake he has ever had. Chapters Summary:(0:00:03) - The Fight for Cooper Square(0:10:35) - The Legacy of Cooper Square(0:18:52) - Advocating for Affordable Housing(0:28:32) - A Collective Effort Chapter Summaries:(0:00:03) - The Fight for Cooper Square (11 Minutes)In this episode, we explore the inspiring story of Frances Goldin and the Cooper Square Committee's fifty-year fight to save a twelve-block stretch of lower Manhattan from abandonment, white flight, and the powerful developer Robert Moses. The documentary film 'Rabble Rousers: Frances Goldin and the Fight for Cooper Square' highlights this David vs Goliath battle, where a diverse group of New Yorkers came together to save thousands of homes and businesses from destruction. In 1970, they won approval for their alternate development plan, and today, a community land trust and mutual housing association are in place, providing affordable homes in the area. (0:10:35) - The Legacy of Cooper Square (8 Minutes)We delve into the factors that set the Cooper Square neighborhood apart from other communities threatened by Robert Moses' bulldozers, and how the 50-year battle for its survival succeeded. Key contributors to this success included collaborating with urban planner Walter Thabit to develop a vision for the community and securing control over the land. Additionally, the neighborhood's rich history of working-class politics and values, as well as its diverse and creative community, played a significant role in the victory. Today, the area is home to a diverse population and a range of minority-owned and woman-owned businesses, fostering a vibrant and sustainable ecosystem. (0:18:52) - Advocating for Affordable Housing (10 Minutes)We discuss the concept of community land trusts, which involve communal land that cannot be sold for profit and should be connected to the public good. The conversation touches on the housing crisis, the role of land speculation, and potential remedies such as reparations for African Americans. Various ongoing initiatives in New York City are mentioned, including efforts to keep public land public and increase community control over land. The importance of collective action and persistence in housing struggles is highlighted, emphasizing the need for a movement organized around the public good. The legacy of Frances Goldin serves as an inspiring example of successful organizing and advocacy for housing rights.' Shownotes created by https://podium.page

To celebrate the end of season one, I compiled a collection of the final questions for each of the first 32 episodes of The Life Shift Podcast. I know that many listeners like to hear how the guest answers the final question.Typically the questions are:"If you could go back to the version of you right before your pivotal moment, what would you say?""If someone listening is in a similar position, what would you want to tell them?"What have you learned from this moment?"Thank you for being a part of this journey. In this episode, I host my new connection, Kelly Anderson. Kelly and I met through LinkedIn, but as you will notice through the conversation, we found a strong connection through the discussion about her pivotal moments. In this episode, Kelly talks about how she left the corporate world to find her purpose. Her story will resonate with anyone that has ever asked themselves, “Is this all there is to life? The same routine day in and day out?” I loved having this conversation with Kelly and creating new, stronger bonds with people living their purpose.Kelly is a Certified Life Coach, spiritual enthusiast, and former 9-5 corporate ladder climber. On Monday's edition of #TheUpdate, Russia faced a fresh wave of condemnation after new evidence emerged of what appeared to be deliberate killings of civilians in Ukraine. Some western leaders called for further sanctions on response, even as moscow continues to press its offensive in the east. Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy appeared in a video message at the Grammy Awards to ask for support in telling the story of Ukraine's invasion by Russia.
Kelly Anderson aka Crayon Kelly has a story that many of us will resonate with. She followed the traditional path of school, marriage and kids and then found herself depleted and realizing she had given everyone else what they needed before herself. She started in the art world in high school and even opened a business with her now ex-husband but found that her art was taking a back seat. Listen as she and Kim discuss her journey towards the realization that she needed to start focusing on herself and unpack all the emotions she had kept stuffed into her emotional "suitcase." She talks about: Divorcing her husband in 2018 and focusing on her own artwork. Working with crayons as a medium in her art; using the child-like attitude into her art to show that it can be impactful as an adult. "When feeling strong emotions, people tell you to keep it to yourself, don't be negative or vulnerable. I was sick of hearing that." Unpacking the suitcase of emotions that are stored away. Mindless behavior of putting things away and not sharing or dealing with them. Focusing on herself rather than everyone else. Started her own business, new art projects, thinking about new accomplishments. Defining herself as a creative strategist-"My creativity doesn't fit in a box." Letting go of what scares you. Everyone is creative in some way. Connecting with others who are different than you. I am, self-admittedly, jealous of artists. There is a part of me that feels like my art ability peaked in 3rd grade. So when I come across a talented artist, I am in awe of their talent. Not only is Kelly Anderson (Crayonkelly.com) such an extremely talented artist, she is a very down to Earth and insightful person. On her website, she describes her art the following way:My mixed media images depict feelings that everyone encounters at some point in their life. The crayon ties in those childlike feelings of safety and comfort. I use other items to tie in the meaning. I include a dictionary cutout relevant to the overall theme so one can visualize the emotions. Most of all it adds a personal touch. Each image has it's own story as a handwritten message that is sealed for one persons eyes.Having struggled through manic depression, she had to find another outlet than the ones she was choosing for self-medication.Enter her art.In our conversation we discuss how art, and especially the use of Crayons, bring us back to the safety of our childhood when we were immune to the judgement of society and we were free to be creative without boundaries. In this heartfelt conversation, we also discuss:Where she draws inspiration for her artHer creative process to bring a brand to life when working with companiesAdvice for those who are timid about trying artThe changes and benefits she witnesses when working with her clientsHow art benefits stress and creativity in personal and professional settingsDo you have a topic you'd like me to discuss?
