The Commonwealth has filed motions asking for things she said to reporters during interviews and the Discovery ID Docuseries. The Federal Appeal is pending as well as a decision on the Motion to Dismiss the entire case. 911 calls in the Bryan Kohberger case have been revealed as well as Amazon purchases in the Motions in Limine. UMG filed a motion to dismiss Drake's case ultimately stating that he lost a rap battle that he willingly participated in. The concept of defamation in rap music, hyperbole, and opinion versus factual statements are challenged in this filing and it's a great read. The Lively and Baldoni cases have been getting more movement as many parties filed motions to dismiss. We'll see what happens next. How Seattle's rap scene got its start

Soundside

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 6, 2025 24:33

In the 1980s, Seattle's music scene was hooked on disco. The success of "Saturday Night Fever" meant venues opted for groovy vinyl over live band performances, and songs like Chic's "Good Times" were on constant rotation. That made room for a similar but modified version of the song's simple breakbeat by a group called The Sugarhill Gang, who quickly brought "rapping" to a nationwide audience. As Ben Camp tells the story, “Rapper’s Delight” – rap’s first hit – made an imprint in Seattle and kicked off a vibrant local scene connecting Sir-Mix-A-Lot to Macklemore. Camp, who writes under the name of Novocaine132, has been covering music in the city since the 1990s – and he recently published his first book, “The Birth of Seattle Rap.” Soundside producer Alec Cowan caught up with the writer to hear more about the book and Seattle’s pre-grunge music scene – starting with why it was disco that gave way to hip hop. Guests: Novocaine132, author of "The Birth of Seattle Rap." Related Links: The Birth of Seattle Rap: Novocaine 132 See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Recently, the Hip-Hop industry lost a legend. Nasty Nes was essential in claiming Seattle's place in the rap matrix through the massive success of Sir Mix A Lot, NastyMix Records was a dynamic imprint that illuminated an obscure geographic region in terms of rap music. We recorded this broadcast in 2024 and did not publish it because we had a really bad technical day. And so now today as we mourn the passing of Nasty Nes Rodriguez, we dug into our archives, retrieved the interview, carefully edited best we could and published this conversation in honor of his life and legacy. Great memories, great perspectives. Even Nes' dog has a prominent part in this recording lol!! But yes, Nasty Nes Rodriguez was a great man and a good friend we met in our days of being in the radio, music and marketing industries. Show Notes Summer Short: “Don't Page Me, Bro!” This week Host Dave Bledsoe slaps an old beeper he found in a box in the basement on the bar and asks if “doctors drank for free” (They don't and he isn't one.)  On the show this week we are doing a Summer Short about that time in the late 80's when every kid with the beeper in America was slinging smack. (They weren't and it was racist moral panic thing.) Along the way we learn about the Worst Summer of Dave's Life. (He couldn't drink for a couple of weeks.) Then we dive into the story with the “411” on pagers (but just the basics, this IS a Summer Short) before getting to the meat of the story: how beepers became synonymous with the drug trade. (Was the media involved? You already know the answer!) We then chart the progress from school suspension to felony beeper possession in America's schools. (Fuck, White People were so scared of Black kids!) We see the fever break thanks to Howard Stern. (We are not making this up) and of course millions of dollars spent by corporations. Our Sponsor this week is Beeper City, your one and pretty much only stop, for all your beeper needs. We open with all the reasons your dad should buy you a beeper and close with Sir Mix A Lot beep beep beeping along. Send us a Text Message. At eleven, Ruthie Craft faced the challenges of a new Tourette's syndrome diagnosis. No one could have predicted that five years later, she'd be onstage, singing a duet with an international superstar. Over the next decade, she would conquer new challenges and heartbreak, becoming a powerhouse singer-songwriter with millions of streams and her own EP. "Tourette's was my reason to sing," Ruthie shares. "When I sang, my tics went away, and I felt normal, if only for a moment."As a teenager, discovering Adele's debut album, *19*, cemented Ruthie's passion for music. She began teaching herself the basics of singing and songwriting. "One morning, I looked at the lyrics I had written on the big whiteboard in my room and thought, ‘this is my purpose.'" Without formal guidance on breaking into the music industry, she started performing at open mics and talent shows, eventually winning a contest to sing with country star Keith Urban. At that time, her onstage outfits were a mix of hand-me-downs and thrifted items, reflecting her resourcefulness as a part-time barista. At 19, Ruthie's whirlwind marriage took her from her home state of Washington to North Carolina, far from her family and friends. As her marriage ended, she found solace in music, exploring new genres like rap and hip hop to rediscover her voice. "The mixture of inspiring lyrics and bold productions made me feel alive," she recalls.Divorced and determined at 23, Ruthie reached all three rounds of Hollywood Week on *American Idol* in 2019. "The insecurity I felt from watching a hundred talented singers perform their original songs pushed me to learn how to write my own. I witnessed the difference between singers, performers, and what it means to be both: an artist." Since then, she has collaborated with producers and artists across the country, sharing stages with Sir-Mix-A-Lot, Shakey Graves, Magic City Hippies, Die Spitz, and Raelyn Nelson. In 2024, Ruthie received a Sonic Guild grant. She explains, "I want to make music that makes people feel alive, comforted, and helps connect them to their own joy and pain." Each performance is an opportunity to "let my emotional filters down and invite the audience to do the same." Her cinematic pop-soul sound features powerful vocals, moody, soulful tones, and slick lyrics, drawing comparisons to Imagine Dragons, early Maroon 5, Amy Winehouse, and Dua Lipa.Ruthie continues to hone her craft in Austin, TX. Her debut EP, *Sound of Blue*, is set to release in September 2024.https://www.ruthiecraft.com/Support the Show. Thanks for listening for more information or to listen to other podcasts or watch YouTube videos click on this link >https://thetroutshow.com/

Even decades after its release, the song continues to be a favorite at sporting events, weddings, and parties. In 2020, Tag Team experienced a resurgence in popularity thanks to a Geico commercial that featured a humorous twist on their famous song. The commercial, titled "Scoop! There It Is," debuted during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic and quickly became a viral sensation. In the ad, DC the Brain Supreme and Steve Rolln are seen in a suburban kitchen, helping a family make ice cream. Instead of "Whoomp! (There It Is)," they sing "Scoop! (There It Is)," cleverly replacing the original lyrics with ice cream-related terms. The commercial's playful tone and nostalgic nod to the 1990s struck a chord with viewers, leading to widespread acclaim and renewed interest in Tag Team. The Geico commercial not only reintroduced Tag Team to a new generation of fans but also showcased the duo's enduring charisma and sense of humor. Their willingness to embrace their past success and adapt it to a modern context demonstrated their versatility and relevance in the ever-evolving music and entertainment industry.www.BetterHelp.com/TheBarnhttp://www.betterhelp.com/TheBarn http://www.betterhelp.com/TheBarnThis episode is sponsored by www.betterhelp.com/TheBarn and brought to you as always by The Barn Media Group. Remember pagers? They were huge in the 80s — these little devices that could receive short messages. Sir Mix-A-Lot even had a song about them! But then cell phones came along, and pagers more or less became obsolete.Except there's one group of people who still carry pagers: medical doctors. At a surprisingly large number of hospitals, the pager remains the backbone of communication. Need to ask a doctor a question? Page them. Need to summon a doctor to an emergency? Page them. And then... wait for them to call you back.Almost everyone agrees that pagers are a clunky and error-prone way for doctors to communicate. So why do so many hospitals still rely on them?On today's show: A story about two doctors who hatched a plan to finally rid their hospital of pagers. And the surprising lessons they learned about why some obsolete technologies can be so hard to replace. This episode was hosted by Jeff Guo and Nick Fountain. “I like big butts and I cannot lie.” No, that wasn't a Winston Churchill quote. It's the iconic first lyric of Seattle-based rapper Sir Mix-a-Lot's 1992 smash hit “Baby Got Back”. While your grandma's out cuttin' a rug at the wedding reception to a song about anacondas and gettin' sprung, it can often be forgotten that the song is actually an anthem of body positivity. His music tends to walk a fine line between well-intentioned and super horny, so this week, we'll dial 1-900-MIXALOT and see if we can kick some thoughts about why he could never repeat the success of this song. Grynch Paper Route (feat. Sir Mix‐A‐Lot) from the 2022 self-released album Born in '86. Nearly fifteen years after dropping his debut full-length, My Second Wind, Grynch is back with his first solo record since 2014 titled Born in ‘86. While it may be a solo record, that doesn't mean the Seattle-born-and-bred rapper isn't still open to sharing the mic. The deeply collaborative artist invited artists like Boom Bap Project, Blake Lewis, Prometheus Brown, and Daz Dillinger to help add color to the nostalgia-hued record. But there's no collaboration more deeply Seattle than our Song of the Day. “Paper Route” sees none other than the big-booty-loving Sir Mix a Lot join Grynch for a song that recognizes the resilience it takes to continue on the winding and fickle journey of being a longstanding musician. “I could never do a thing that I aint about,” Grynch spits on the chorus, “Suckers out here running miles /Chasing clout /But when it's all said and done and they faded out /I'm gonna still be getting mine on my paper route.” Watch Grynch's KEXP in-studio performance of fan-favorite “My Volvo” from all the way back in 2010 and read the full post at KEXP.org.Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
