Tonight we’ll experience the season finale of School Night at Bardot in Hollywood. School Night has long been LA’s premier music discovery showcase and tonight’s installment will feature four buzzy bands, among them, Sea Pipes. And, speaking of school nights, for this band, it’s literal because they are still in high school. Assembled just this past summer, and drawing inspiration from The Black Keys, these guys make it a habit to channel their problems through their music. They already issued a debut EP The Right Through, which features “Unnameable Loss.”
Singer-songwriter Daniel Blake followed his heart, literally. As his girlfriend made a move to SoCal from Arizona, Blake came along and began working in construction… thinking he was leaving his musical pursuits behind. But he enjoyed the work, and the long drives provided ample time for melodies to develop and for songs to begin to write themselves. “Dreaming About It” is one of those songs and you’ll likely hear it as he and his full band kick-start School Night at Bardot for the very first show of the season(!).

“Innovation can be defined in a number of different ways. I think it can be tangible in terms of a product that you are actually using that is very different than anything you've seen before. I think for me, I work for a company that is very innovative and we breathe the culture of that but for my day-to-day, it's really innovation in the way you approach things, your thought process. Be ok with trying different things." Sarah Bardot, Director of Electrical Trades, Milwaukee Tool joins the Innovation Overload Podcast and discusses networking, mentorship, collaboration, and taking note of those who have paved the way in our industry.

Take Lisa's class, Imaginative Map-Making in Procreate on Skillshare — Use this link to get 30 days free! — https://skl.sh/3z8zI9aJoin in on my conversaion with Lisa Bardot, who teaches people how to make art on their iPad. But that job description is deceivingly simple. She may be best known for her vast catalogue of analogue inspired procreate brushes, aka Bardot Brush. (She's kind of the Kyle T. Webster of procreate brushes). But she also teaches making digital online in places like Skillshare, YouTube and her own membership platform called Art Maker's Club. She also runs in-person art trips — her most recent one being in France. If that weren't enough, she's also the author of a brand new book called Drawing Digital, The Complete Guide for Learning to Draw and Paint on Your iPad, AND she even provides monthly prompt lists for inspiration-seeking artists, which she calls Make Art Every Day. Lisa has created an entire universe of creativity and community around her passion for drawing and illustrating in Procreate. I really think she's a perfect guest for the podcast, as she embodies the whole ethos of this podcast of showing up everyday and growing through it, no matter what (and thriving because of it). >>> Video edition available on YouTube.
"Welcome back to the Neighbourhood Watch with Strange Neighbours. We hope you enjoy this month's meeting. Make yourself comfortable again, there's snacks on the table. This month's meeting involves a presentation of some our favourite tracks from the neighbourhood, and we also have a guest presenter. Guest presenter: Spiro Catalano Spiro Catalano's groovy tech house sound has been making waves all over California and the world, with this inspiration drawing heavily from early 2000's hip hop and skateboarding culture. Since learning to DJ at age 12, Spiro has grown into a powerhouse producer with releases on record labels such as CUFF, Farris Wheel, Wyldcard, Late Night Munchies, and more. His early DirtyBird style has caught the eye of VonStroke himself, earning Spiro a spot at DirtyBird Campout in 2018 at the Bass Lodge for the afters. Although Spiro was born and raised in Northern California, where he's still based today, he has also played at staple SoCal venues such as Blind Tiger, Bardot, and Wicked West, which is no surprise given his unique DJ-ing style: Spiro does not believe in preparing mixes when he can overlay acapellas over beats to create his own twist on song. It's truly a rare treat to hear live. Notably, this year, his music was played out on several stages at the Coachella Arts & Music Festival, as well as Connections Festival in Brazil and even at Ministry of Sound in 2022. Spiro Catalano hails from humble beginnings, but given his rapid upward trajectory, it's clear he's a rising star in the world of house music. So once again lock the doors, turn the speakers up and join us for this month's instalment.

Belinda Chapple. She was a member of the massive Australian girl group Bardot. Bardot formed in 1999 on the reality TV series Popstars on Channel 7. Popstars filmed the whole process, from auditioning thousands of ladies, down to the top 25 and then eventually the top five that formed Bardot. From there they moved into a house together and we watched their every moment for the first three months of Bardot. Bardot released two albums, were nominated for three ARIA awards and had two national tours, before their abrupt end in 2002. The band then consisted of Belinda Chapple, Sophie Monk, Sally Polihronas and Tiffany Wood and an official statement was released to say “Bardot confirm their mutual decision to end the group's career.” Wildly I was there for the band's final ever performance on the Channel V stage - the 2nd of May in 2002. Which I didn't actually recall until getting ready for this interview, I was still drinking at the time and dealing with a lot of PTSD shit. It makes sense I don't remember it. But when I watched it, you see all four women in tears, marking the end of a once close band. Belinda has released a book to tell us what really happened. The end of the band was not mutual and despite the band reportedly earning up to 26 million in its first 12 months what the ladies actually got paid was a long way from that. But it's not all about money. It's about friendship, trust, and in some ways - betrayal. Belinda Chappell is a brilliant human, and her story is one I know you'll get a lot out of. Shara Nova, the mastermind behind My Brightest Diamond, serves up elegantly crafted songs with mathematical precision and emotional heft. That's what you'll hear when My Brightest Diamond takes the tiny stage as part of KCRW's School Night at Bardot tonight. One song we hope to hear is “Black Sheep,” because it struts in like modern cabaret. Be sure to wait for the last bit at the very end to wipe away any Monday blues.
