FYC FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION Campaign…BREATHE - BEST LIVE ACTION SHORT FILM…starring MAGNUM P.I.'s @stephenhillacts with music featured by GRAMMY Winner @shabazzpalaces …Exec Produced by @shantillylace of HBO's Heaven's Gate…during the 10th year anniversary of the killing of ERIC GARNER…Voting on the ACADEMY SCREENING ROOM begins DEC 9-13th 2024BREATHE is a short film narrative and short dramatic fantasy about the last day of Eric Garner's life. For Eric, it's a normal day in his life in his neighborhood, but for the rest of the world, it's the day Eric faces the reality of taking his last breath. The film stars @stephenhillacts (Magnum P.I.) as Eric Garner. On July 17, 2014, Eric Garner, an African American man, was killed in the New York City borough of Staten Island by Daniel Pantaleo, a New York City Police Department (NYPD) officer, after the latter put him in a prohibited chokehold while arresting him.Video footage of the incident generated widespread national attention and raised questions about the use of force by law enforcement. In an interview with Flintside.com, Burton-Oare stated that "she recognized that this story was not just about Eric Garner, but also about Ramsey Orta who filmed Garner's deadly arrest. By giving him a place in her project, Burton-Oare aimed to highlight the interconnectedness of their lives and experiences."Executive produced by Shannon E. Riggs, the cast also includes Jason Galloza, Vince Fazio, Luke Leonard, Afrim Gjonbalaj, and Shanel Riley. The featured song in the film comes from Grammy Award winner Ishmael Butler, best known for his work with Digable Planets and Shabazz Palaces.Listen/Follow here: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/pbs-262-vote-for-breathe-for-2025-academy-awards-best/id1486119466?i=1000680273918

I began the Pullin from the Stacks podcast just over 10 years ago, publishing my first episode on October 19, 2014. The name is from the classic Digable Planets cut "Pacifics," a song which has a lot of meaning to me. I think I actually messed up and called it "Pullin from the Crates" for that first episode. The first record I played was a cover of Herbie Hancock's "Maiden Voyage" by the Jazz Piano Quartet. The first record I play on this episode is a different "Maiden Voyage" cover, this time by the Dalton Jazz Ensemble, a school band record I found at Recollect Records in Denver years ago. One of my favorite songs, I still search out any version I can. The next record is the first record I ever put on my Discogs "want list," Michael Sardaby's "Gail," after hearing a soundclip on Youtube one day. Even back then it was going for more money than I'd ever spent on a piece of wax. A few years later, I sold my old copy of Eminem's first 12" for a couple hundred, and immediately went to see if there were any copies of "Gail" available at the same price - and there were! I feel so lucky to have snagged one. The next record is from one of my favorite jazz compilations, this one out of Hungary in the early 70s. I highly recommend it, the whole record is gorgeous, it's called "Modern Jazz Anthology X" and folks are sleeping on it! Staying in the same part of the world, I was introduced to Romanian jazz legend Johnny Cretu Raducanu after hearing a few Electrecord releases he had played on. The cover of this 10" and his own cover of Charles Mingus's "Haitian Fight Song" drove me to track down a copy online. The whole record is stunning. Speaking of stunning it is hard to find words to describe the beauty of this masterpiece by Winston Mankunku Ngozi, often referred to as South Africa's John Coltrane. It is a desert island record. The following tune, from the Roy Haynes Trio, is one I heard on Karriem Riggins masterful mix, "Music Kaleidoscope," and had to track down. I found it one weekend in a super random record store deep in Long Island. The Chucho Valdes represents my love of Cuban jazz; while I didn't find this record during my time in Havana, I did get hip to Mr. Valdes and months afterword dug this out of a crate on the floor under a table at the WMFU record fair. The Milton Banana cut I play here is from the first record of his I bought, I think at Human Head back in the day. He's killing it on the drums!! I don't remember when I first heard this RF 45 - maybe Junior played it? - but it's a gem, had to track one down. And Green Caterpillar man...I first heard this when Rev Shines played it YEARS ago on KBOO during Jumbo's "Beat Jeopardy" show. I remember being like "wtf is this?!?!?" - took many years to find a copy. I bought this off a dude in Colorado on Amazon.com in like 2015 for about $80. Clean. No regrets on that. The Soul Surfers cut here is just crazy to me, I think someone posted it on IG and I took notice. And finally, this beautiful cover of Kendrick Lamar by my guy Sly 5th Ave released by my people DJ Center and Footlong Development is a stone cold classic. I can't count all the DJ gigs I end with this 45 or all the people coming up to the turntables to see what it is. This is not the end of the podcast. There will be more episodes, though probably less often, as has been the case for much of 2024. Hoping to get back on a schedule of 1-2 episodes a month, possibly with some special guests. Speaking of guests, I want to thank everyone who's contributed a guest set these past ten years! Alex Stange, DO77, Duiji Mshinda, John Morrison, DJ Center, J. Rawls, Bruce Phillips, Evolve-One, LateBloomer and dflush, Daniel Littlewood, the DadBodRapPod, and Waffles Hidalgo. Much respect! And the biggest thank you goes out to everyone who's tuned in once or a hundred times, downloaded, subscribed, told their friends, or talked shit. It's all appreciated.

This season we discuss over 300 albums of the 1990s selected from https://besteveralbums.com. The show starts at (1:37). The Six Singles segment starts at (6:31). This episode covers the following albums: Mary J. Blige - My Life (40:38), Sunny Day Real Estate - Diary (1:04:45), Digable Planets - Blowout Comb (1:34:56), and Pearl Jam - Vitalogy (1:56:14).
Our third REM episode but the first one that we had to delay some recording of because of too much vomiting, which was a treat for Dave. If you've heard our takes on 'Out of Time' and 'Automatic For The People' you'll know that we absolutely loved those but we weren't even a fraction as familiar with this one at all. Also this is an absolute beast of an episode in terms of running time, mainly because of the total deluge of album and single releases within the five week time period in late 1994 that we were looking at so we won't be offended if you skip those sections if those aren't your favourite bits. But if you do skip them you'll miss us talking about the likes of Korn, Shellac, Digable Planets, Refused, Shampoo and obviously East 17. As always please do give us a follow on our social media platforms and why not go and give us a nice rating over on Spotify now that you're able to while you're checking out this episode's companion playlist and our ongoing and sprawling playlist of songs from each album that we do an episode on. Cheers!
What makes a spy creamy? How important is it for lyrics to make grammatical sense? Has any record ever had a better vibe than this one? These among many other questions are answered by Dad Bod Rap Pod hosts Demone Carter, David Ma, and Nate LeBlanc on this week's look back at Digable Planets' 1994 album Blowout Comb. This record was the last official release for the Planets after their hit debut, Reachin' changed the sound of hip-hop briefly a few years earlier. Blowout Comb is another animal (insect?) entirely, a reflective, subtly swaggering tribute to Trouble Man-era Blaxploitation suffused with Panther politics and a warm, analog sonic palette. While reaction to the album was somewhat muted at the time, this album has become something of a cult classic for folks who like their rap records thoughtful and adventurous. Join us as we reconsider the themes, design, lyrics, beats, and messaging of an excellent slab of Brooklyn bohemianism. DBRP is produced by Demone Carter and released by Stony Island Audio, a swell group of hip-hop know-it-all's. Theme song produced by Cutso, who is in our hearts this week. Love you, P.

Our guest today is amazing. Hands down one of my favorite producers out right now. His sound is jazzy, laid back. It is like what I would imagine Digable Planets sounding like in 2024. He has recently put out an incredible piece of art called 74: Out of Time featuring a host of emcees, Awon, ill Camille, vic Spencer, pink siifu, billy woods, tha God Fahim, Fly Anakin, Cooley High and many more. It might just be my favorite jazzy production since the era of Disable Planets and De LA Soul and the Native Tongues. It is a remarkable project that we are going to jump into right now with our guest, the one and only, Ol' Burger Beats! https://olburgerbeats.bandcamp.com/album/74-out-of-time The Boom Bap Chat is a podcast that explores Hip-Hop music and the people who create it. iomos marad, Profound, MC Till, and sometimes Beau Brown and Joe November discuss lyrics, production, classic albums, building community, and much more with a mix of legendary and up and coming artists. If you thought these songs were from Jane's Addiction, it is an understandable mistake. Porno for Pyros was formed in 1992 after the first break-up of Jane's Addiction by members by lead vocalist Perry Farrell and percussionist Stephen Perkins. They added Peter DiStefano on guitar and Martyn LeNoble on bass for their eponymously named debut album. The inspiration for the band's name came from a fireworks advertisement that Perry Farrell saw in a pornographic magazine. Inspiration was also connected to the 1992 LA riots which occurred in the band's hometown. The album Porno for Pyros benefitted from the success of Jane's Addiction and the buzz surrounding the new group. Porno for Pyros began a nationwide tour to support the band prior to the release of the first album. By the time the album was released in 1993 there was a pent-up demand for it, causing it to surge to number 3 on the Billboard 200 album chart. With a blend of punk, psychedelic rock and alternative, the album gained both commercial and critical success. The band was impactful on the alternative rock scene, but was short-lived. They would release a follow-up album in 1996 before disbanding in 1998. They would have reunions in 2009 and 2020, and the original line-up has recorded new material as of 2023 to be released as an EP in 2024.Wayne takes us through this alternative rock album. Cursed FemaleThis track was released as the first single as a medley with the song “Cursed Male.” The lyrics reflect the abuse women face in life. It reached number 3 on the Modern Rock charts. “Cursed to be born beautiful, poor, and female, there's none that suffer more.”Cursed MaleForming a medley with “Cursed Female” for the first single, this song turns to the difficulties males face in life. “All the guys that really have the money are too old to have a good time with it...Too old to turn the women on, too old to have a fast car and drive it.”PetsThis is the hit from the album. It deals with dissatisfaction with the human race on the brink of destruction. The song describes how aliens might take over the world and treat human beings as great pets. It reached number 1 on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart.Packin' .25This track has the LA riots as its inspiration. It reflects the idea of people carrying a handgun in order to achieve respect. Interestingly, a 25-caliber pistol is not a very powerful weapon. “I dreamt all yesterday how I might make a man feel with a gun up to his face! Show respect to me. I don't care what you're thinking, I'll wipe that thought away! ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles) by The Proclaimers (from the motion picture “Benny and Joon”)Johnny Depp and Mary Stuart Masterson star in this film about two eccentric people falling in love. STAFF PICKS:Daughter by Pearl JamLynch gets the staff picks rolling with the second single from Pearl Jam's "Vs." album. It talks about a girl with severe dyslexia whose mother doesn't understand the condition. The lack of understanding prompts the mother to abuse the daughter, thinking she is being deliberately lazy and disruptive. Woman by Brother CaneRob features a deeper cut from Alabama band Brother Cane off their debut album. This grunge-tinted song has a slow, haunting, mournful feel that builds into a faster paced, minor epic by the middle of the song before returning to the slow theme at the end. The singer discusses an unstable relationship. “I used to know better, now I don't know what's worse - having it all maybe, or having nothing for sure.”Rebirth of Slick (Cool Like Dat) by Digable Planets Bruce brings us the first single from the debut album Reachin' (A New Refutation of Time and Space).” The lyrics are a celebration of hip-hop, the Brooklyn underground scene, jazz, style, and the confidence of the group. Digable Planets sampled “Stretching” by Art Blakley & the Jazz Messengers for the chorus.Lollipop Serenade by Insane JaneWayne's staff pick is from a local Atlanta band with a female lead. Insane Jane put out two albums, the first called “Each Finger” and the second called “Green Little Pill.” The lead singer was known as “Yellow.” This may be a song that those outside of Atlanta may not have heard before. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Beer :30 by The Reverend Horton HeatWell, it is largely instrumental, if you don't count the occasional “beer” and “get naked” statements thrown in. Reflect back on the pivotal year of 1993 with us as we revisit a year where grunge reigned supreme, hip-hop was hitting new heights, and alternative rock was reshaping the music landscape. From Nirvana's raw "In Utero" to the jazz-infused "Midnight Marauders" of A Tribe Called Quest. This episode is a celebration of the 30th anniversary of some of the most important albums of '93.Episode Highlights:How much of a departure was Nirvana's "In Utero" from their "Nevermind" in terms of production and emotional depth? How did The Smashing Pumpkins' "Siamese Dream" mirror the commercial appeal of Nirvana's "Nevermind"?How did Pearl Jam's "Versus" album reflect a more introspective and unique approach compared to their debut album "Ten"?How did "Strictly 4 My N.I.G.G.A.Z." showcase Tupac's growth as an artist compared to his earlier work? What makes Digable Planets' "Reachin'" such an underrated hip-hop gem?How did Guru's "Jazzmatazz" blend jazz and rap in a unique way?

This episode of Across The Margin: The Podcast presents an interview with musician trumpeter, slide trumpeter, arranger/composer and bandleader from New York City, Steven Bernstein. Steven is best known for his work in The Lounge Lizards, Sexmob, Spanish Fly, and the Millennial Territory Orchestra. He has released four albums under his own name on John Zorn's Tzadik Records and he has performed with jazz giants including Roswell Rudd, Sam Rivers, Don Byron, and Medeski, Martin & Wood, as well as musicians ranging from Aretha Franklin to Lou Reed, from Linda Ronstadt to Digable Planets, from Sting to Courtney Love. Steven was a member of Levon Helm's Midnight Ramble band, playing in Helm's Woodstock home, as well as touring with the band. As an arranger he has written for Bill Frisell, Rufus Wainwright, and Elton John, just to name a few. He has composed for dance, theater, film and television, and with composer John Lurie, arranged the scores to many feature films, including Get Shorty. While Steven is prolific with his output, this episode centers on two of his projects, Sexmob, which just released a terrific new album called The Hard Way, and The Millennial Territory Orchestra, which recently released four excellent records, in one day, on the Royal Potato Family label. Sexmob's latest release is a bit of a departure for the band, as with producer Scotty Hard at the board, The Hard Way skews decisively electronic. On it, Hard's beats and soundscapes provide Steven, saxophonist Briggan Krauss, bassist Tony Scherr and acoustic/electric drummer Kenny Wollesen, all the stimulus they need for further compose and fearlessly reinvent. With each offering, and certainly with The Hard Way and its rich electro-acoustic groove canvas, Steven and crew reveal a modernizing impulse, but also an equally strong foundation in the roots of jazz and American song. Funky, bluesy, with a tattered dissonance conjured up by Krauss Throaty saxophone tone, the distinctive wail of Steven's rare horn, and the swagger of Scherr and Wollesen's rhythm section grind, Sexmob continues to chart new paths in 21st-century creative music. In this episode host Michael Shields and Steven Bernstein talk about Sexmob's new direction sonically found on The Hard Way while exploring the production process behind this captivating work of art. They converse on producer Scott Hard's influence on the album, the unique art house label that The Hard Way was released on called Corbett vs. Dempsey, and the four albums Steven recently released with The Millennial Territory Orchestra. They even discuss Sexmob's forthcoming tour with Laurie Anderson, the many “gifts” Steven received in his career from renowned producer Hal Willner, and so much more. Hosted on Acast. Welcome to our Beats Around The Bush season, in which we investigate the rap and hip-hop that brought us joy during/near the first Bush presidency, 1988-1993ish. After we try to explain our construction of this framework, we dig into our first BATB topic: "hippie hop," the relaxed/baked grooves of the time from artists like De La Soul, PM Dawn, Us3, Digable Planets, and Arrested Development. Who has the sexiest flow? Which group's album sent Sarah tumbling off her dorm futon? Does Mark have middle-school poetry sins to atone for? How ya doin', Al(s): it's a brand-new season of MASTAS.
