So you've landed your first sponsor. Now you start thinking… What do they actually want to see from you? Downloads? Listener behavior? Something else entirely? Today, we're opening the mailbag to tackle a question from one of our very own cohosts, Sid, who wondered what kind of analytics sponsors really care about and how podcasters should present that information to keep the relationship strong. Do downloads matter as much as we think they do? What metrics actually tell the story of your audience? And do sponsors even care about the same numbers podcasters obsess over? We explore what sponsors may want to learn from podcast analytics, what data might be useful to share, and how creators can think about reporting in a way that supports a long-term partnership. We also briefly touch on another question… is there really a difference between a DIY podcaster and an indie podcaster, or is it mostly semantics?Episode Highlights: [02:54] Indie vs. DIY podcasting debate[06:43] What sponsors actually want in analytics reports[13:44] Trackable links, promo codes, and proving ROI[25:35] AI tools for generating editable slide decks[29:47] Apple versus host analytics mismatchLinks & Resources: The Podcasting Morning Chat: www.podpage.com/pmcJoin The Empowered Podcasting Facebook Group:www.facebook.com/groups/empoweredpodcastingBook A Free Call With Me: https://calendly.com/ironickmedia/freestrategycallJoin The Empowered Podcasting Facebook Group:www.facebook.com/groups/empoweredpodcastingApplication To Submit Your Show For Evaluation: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSc8-Xv6O6lrNPcPJwj3N0Z5Osdl-5kHGz_PiAU45U57S-XgoA/viewform?usp=headerBuzzSprout Analytics: https://www.buzzsprout.com/blog/apple-podcasts-analyticsOP3: https://op3.dev/Podpage: https://www.podpage.com/?via=ironickmediaRemember to rate, follow, share, and review our podcast. Send us feedback/questions via TextHey there, Dave Jackson here! In this episode, Jim Collison and I dove deep into some hot topics in podcasting and audio media. We kicked things off with a look at the latest Edison Research findings showing that, for the first time, more time is spent listening to podcasts than to AM/FM radio for spoken word audio. We reminisced about the evolution of radio, the challenges of finding a working radio today, the shift of talk and sports content to podcasts, and how technology keeps changing the game.We also had fun nostalgia moments: remembering AM static, Headbanger's Ball, MTV catchphrases, and what really happened to music videos.Advertising in podcasting got a thorough critique—how much is too much, what makes ads skip-worthy or valuable, and what lessons we can take from radio and even the Super Bowl.Another lively discussion came up around video podcasting. We debated YouTube versus distributing video everywhere, addressed anti-YouTube sentiments, and reminded listeners that audio is still king for a lot of people.I also shared some behind-the-scenes tech workflows, like how I use Tella, Hindenburg, and Podchapters, how to move sites to Podpage, and why no tool does it all (yet).Big philosophical questions popped up too: What would actually "kill" podcasting? Is it too many bad ads, a decline in content quality, or moving away from RSS? Or, is podcasting simply evolving, and are our definitions (or nostalgia) holding us back?Randy Black called in with a great riff on what "remarkable content" really means—it can be good or bad. We wrapped up by agreeing that, at the end of the day, success in podcasting comes from making meaningful shows for your audience and being authentic.Sponsors:PodcastBranding.co - They see you before they hear youBasedonastruestorypodcast.com - Comparing Hollywood with History?Video Version (unedited)Mentioned In This EpisodeSchool of Podcastinghttps://www.schoolofpodcasting.com/joinPodpagehttp://www.trypodpage.comHome Gadget GeeksFeatured Supporter: Shane from SpybraryWe interview spy authors, espionage historians and fans of spy books, spy movies and spy TV series! Podcast Answer Man
487 - Podcasting Has Officially Surpassed Talk Radio.

Podcast Answer Man

In this episode of Podcast Answer Man, I talk about a milestone moment that I never thought I'd see so soon. For the first time in history, audio podcasting has surpassed AM/FM talk radio as the most popular way Americans consume spoken-word audio. This episode is part industry insight, part personal reflection, and part behind-the-scenes look at what I've been building lately. I also share several important updates related to podcasting tools, events, and opportunities for creators. Podcasting Has Overtaken Talk Radio A close friend sent me an article this week. According to recent research, podcast listenership has officially overtaken talk radio among Americans who consume spoken-word audio. I walk through the data, what it means, and why this shift matters so much for creators, entrepreneurs, and anyone thinking about starting a podcast today. I also reflect on my own long history with radio. From childhood fascination with microphones and transmitters, to years of listening to talk radio, to the moment podcasting completely replaced radio in my own life. Why Podcasting Continues to Grow I break down why podcasting continues to grow year after year: On-demand listening instead of fixed schedules No fear of missing content due to live broadcasts The ability to choose exactly what you want to listen to Deep, focused engagement without constant interruption I also talk about how radio itself helped accelerate the growth of podcasting by educating audiences on what podcasts are, even if that wasn't their original intention. People Really Do Listen. And They Binge. There's a persistent myth that attention spans are shrinking too much for long-form audio. I address that directly in this episode and share a voicemail from a listener who has been binge-listening dozens of episodes and was inspired to finally launch his own podcast as a result. People are not just listening. They're staying. They're finishing episodes. And they're building long-term relationships with the voices they trust. Trust, Attention, and the Power of the Medium I also comment on recent industry research around trust and podcasting. While I share my honest opinions about advertising and ad-skipping, I explain why podcasting remains one of the most powerful mediums for building trust, connection, and influence over time. Podcasting allows for depth. It allows for nuance. And it allows for real human connection in a way that very few platforms can match. Tools and Resources Mentioned CNET article on podcast listenership surpassing talk radio: https://www.cnet.com/tech/services-and-software/podcasts-officially-outrank-talk-radio-for-the-first-time-in-history iHeartMedia State of Podcasting 2026 report: https://www.iheartmedia.com/advertise/insights/articles/the-state-of-podcasting Episode 477: Why I Moved Podcast Answer Man to Podpage: http://PodcastAnswerMan.com/477 Podpage Affilate Link: http://PodcastAnswerMan.com/podpage Podcast Movement 2026 information and early access signup: https://2026.podcastmovement.com Social Media Marketing World 2026 Affiliate Link: https://www.socialmediaexaminer.com/smmworld/?sme=371 A Behind-the-Scenes Look at What I'm Building Toward the end of the episode, I share an update on a personal project I've been working on. After attending a masterclass, I began building my own podcast-focused software using AI-assisted development. The project is called PodBriefer, and while it's still in private beta, it's already changing how I personally consume, manage, summarize, and engage with podcasts. I explain what it does, why I built it, and how it's helping me stay deeply connected with the work of clients, peers, and people I care about without being overwhelmed. More to come on that soon. The Path Forward If you're listening to this and you're an entrepreneur, a business owner, or a solopreneur who feels isolated in the decisions you're making, I want to speak directly to you. Many people building service-first businesses are doing meaningful work, serving real clients, and creating genuine transformation, yet they're doing it alone. No team. No trusted room. No consistent place to think out loud, gain perspective, and make aligned decisions. That's exactly why I created the Next Level Mastermind. This is a curated, high-trust community of service-first entrepreneurs who are committed to growth, clarity, and long-term sustainability. We meet every week. We think together. We support one another. And we take action from a place of alignment rather than pressure. If you feel like you're carrying everything by yourself and you know it doesn't have to be that way, I invite you to reach out. Email me directly at cliff@cliffravenscraft.com and let me know you're interested in learning more about the Next Level Mastermind. I'd love to explore whether this is the right next step for you. In this episode, I share a full behind the scenes look at everything I have been working on since I made the decision to bring Podcast Answer Man and Podcasting A to Z back as a primary focus in my business. Episode 802 was the story of why this decision happened. This episode is the story of what actually happened next. Over the past month, I have been rebuilding, reconnecting, and reactivating an entire ecosystem that had been dormant for nearly a decade. In this conversation, I walk you through the real work behind the scenes. The relationships, the systems, the strategy, and the momentum that started moving the moment I committed to this direction. I talk about landing a speaking engagement at Podfest Expo and what that means for reconnecting with the podcasting community. I share how reconnecting with people like Nick Pavlidis and Rob Greenlee has already started opening doors and reconnecting relationships in the industry. I also walk through how Podcast Answer Man is now back on a true weekly publishing schedule. Every Friday at 12:01am Eastern Time, there is a new episode. I also announce that The Cliff Ravenscraft Show is now back to a weekly schedule as well. Every Monday at 12:01am Eastern Time, there will be a new episode focused on business strategy, mindset, and the behind the scenes of what I am building. I share some of the emotional responses I have already received from longtime listeners who heard the Podcast Answer Man intro music again for the first time in years. Those messages reminded me just how meaningful this work has been in people's lives for more than two decades. I also talk about the strategic decisions I have made to support this new season, including moving the Podcast Answer Man website to PodPage, setting up new affiliate partnerships, rebuilding the Podcasting A to Z sales page, and launching a new series of live interviews called Where Are They Now featuring former Podcasting A to Z students who are still creating content more than a decade later. A big part of this episode is dedicated to the work I have been doing behind the scenes on my email list. I explain why I moved back to ConvertKit, how I am rebuilding my email sequences, and how I am creating separate paths for people who want podcasting focused content and those who want business, mindset, and entrepreneurial content. This episode is a snapshot of a turning point. It captures what it looks like when an idea becomes a commitment and when momentum starts to build. If you want the deeper story of why Podcast Answer Man came back, listen to Episode 802. If you want to understand how everything is now being built to support that decision, this episode is the next chapter. One of the most common questions I get from podcasters is how long a podcast episode should be, and in this episode I go much deeper than just throwing out a number. Podcast Episode Length In the first half of this episode, I answer a SpeakPipe voicemail from Nate about episode length and whether it is okay to mix short and long episodes within the same show. I explain why episode length is about how your show fits into the daily habits and routines of your listeners. The Pressure To Add Video In the second half of the episode, I respond to a voicemail from Jim about video podcasting. I talk honestly about the current hype around YouTube, Spotify video, and the pressure some people feel to turn every podcast into a video show. A New Method of Audio Production I pull back the curtain and explain exactly how I am producing Podcast Answer Man today in a way I never have before. I am recording and editing in small segments inside Adobe Audition, building the episode piece by piece, cutting, refining, and reshaping as I go. PodPage Update I also share updates about Podpage, including new features they added in response to my feedback and the SEO scoring tools that help optimize episode pages for search. Hey there, it's Dave Jackson, and in this episode I'm revising the challenge of naming your podcast—a topic I haven't covered since 2019! I share a simple test I use for show names: I tell people the name and ask what they think it's about. If their answer matches my content, I know I'm on the right track.I talk about how it's tempting to get cute with names (like “The Dugout” for a baseball show), but if you skip keywords like “baseball,” your show might not appear in searches. If you want a clever name, adding a clear tagline can help.I also cover practical tips like making sure your podcast name is easy to say and spell. I learned the hard way when I called a show “Podcast FastPass”—it was tricky to pronounce and easily confused. And be wary of names with tricky spellings or multiple possible formats (like “2” vs “two,” or double S's).Don't forget to check if your domain is available—I usually try for a .com, but if that's taken, I recommend adding “show,” “radio,” or “cast” to get a unique domain. And of course, Google your proposed name to see if someone else is already using it.In this episode, I also mention two tools to help brainstorm names: one from PodPage, and a new one from Buzzsprout.Podpage Podcast Name Generatorhttps://www.podpage.com/podcast-name-generator/Buzzsprout Podcast Name Generatorhttps://www.buzzsprout.com/podcast-name-generatorNeed Help With Your Podcast? If you're stuck on names or need help moving forward, come visit me at schoolofpodcasting.com! 1238. Get the Remarkable Episode ChecklistWho and WhyWhen it comes to growing your podcast, there are two things that drive the content and the first one is who is your audience. It can't be “everybody” and it can't be “men 25 to 50” as there is a big difference between those two men. There is one situation that I'll talk about in a minute that is an exception. The Three R'sRelative Content: Shows the audience, ““I understand where you are, and here's something useful for you today.”Remarkable Content: Create episodes worth talking about or sharing. A good podcast reliably informs or entertains with quality, while a remarkable podcast emotionally connects, inspires, and leaves a lasting impression through exceptional storytelling, unique content, or innovative presentationWhen you have relative, remarkable content it resonates with your audience (and they tell a friend).Examine Your Showpodcastsconnect.apple.com and creators.spotify.com allow you to check your completion rate.Community, Community, CommunityYou can use tools like Heartbeat, Systeme, and Circle (Systeme has a free version) to build a community. But while I was sitting there, totally immersed in this billion-dollar light show, something clicked—and it has everything to do with your podcast.
