The UAE has been front and centre, as it has been promising to try to strike a deal at the COP28, with at-risk nations and Western powers rejecting a proposal that stopped short of phasing out fossil fuels. The 13-day summit has been debating a first-ever global exit from oil, gas and coal. So will a deal be done? In January of 2016, people started to find body parts wrapped in shopping bags on a stretch of the Grand Canal in Co. Kildare. To gardai, this looked like a gangland hit. But when the remains were identified as 33 year old Kenneth O'Brien, it was quickly determined that he was not known to be involved in anything illegal. Why was Kenneth O'Brien killed? Last year, the Cop26 climate summit in Glasgow sought to keep alive the target of holding global temperatures to 1.5C. With this year's COP27, the feeling is not so much of keeping us on track but steering us back on course as the gap between targets and outcomes seemingly only widens. To discuss what we can expect from next week's negotiations, Anton is joined by Caroline O'Doherty, Environment Correspondent at the Irish Independent & Omar Ibrahim, Industrial Ph.D. Research Fellow and Energy Engineering student at University College Cork.

The forecast on global fuel supplies is grim. The International Energy Agency predicts a doubling in price as well as worldwide shortages. In an attempt to tackle these energy shortages, the IEA in conjunction with the EU, are launching a new initiative - ‘Play Your Part' - where they are asking the public to adopt energy saving tips that are hoped to reduce our energy consumption and reduce the money we send to Russia to buy their gas and oil and ultimately fund their war on Ukraine. But is this enough? Presenter Fionnán Sheahan hears from the experts on how rationing could well become a thing of the present with Environment editor Caroline O'Doherty, and Economist Chris Johns on hand to discuss.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
As COP26 gets underway in Glasgow, the Indo Daily asks what we can expect from the 12-day UN conference billed as the “last best chance” to prevent runaway climate change. Host Denise Calnan is joined by Minister for Environment and Climate, Eamon Ryan, who talks COP26, Greta Thunberg, and his own carbon footprint, while the Irish Independent's Caroline O'Doherty tells us why the event is a make-or-break on climate action. What can we expect from COP26? As the 12-day UN conference gets underway this weekend and world leaders gather in Glasgow, the Indo Daily looks at what it all means in our climate action struggle. Joining host Denise Calnan is Minister for Environment and Climate, Eamon Ryan, who talks about his everyday efforts to manage his carbon footprint and why Greta Thunberg is right to call out world leaders on climate change efforts. Caroline O'Doherty, the Irish Independent's Environment Correspondent is on hand to tell us exactly what we can expect, what issues are on the agenda, and who will be there.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
As warnings of energy blackouts this winter emerge, there are questions being asked about the value of data centres to Ireland. Are they energy hogs? Do they hold their own as worthwhile businesses? And what should our policy be going forward? With over 70 major data centres located in Ireland, some political parties are calling for a moratorium on new data centres. But is this a weak admission that we can't set up our own modern electricity grid correctly? Joining Adrian to discuss this issue this week is Social Democrats TD and spokesperson on climate, Jennifer Whitmore, the founder of Host In Ireland, Garry Connolly, and the Irish Independent's environment editor, Caroline O'Doherty.
For this episode, we are thrilled to have Caroline O'Doherty, Dr Dave Robbins and Kayle Crosson join us to chat about climate change in the media. Caroline is the environment correspondent for the Irish Independent, Dave is an Assistant Professor at the School of Communications in Dublin City University and Kayle is the editor for Green News. Covering a wide range of areas, including what the trends are in reporting and in the public's perceptions. We also chat about how the media is behaving in relation to linking climate change to other issues we see in the news, how interconnected everything is and areas where the media could do better. We discuss the trust levels placed in traditional media and whether media still informs discussions and much more besides. Join us to hear all of our guests' thoughts on this fascinating topic.
