Send us a textMy guest on this week's episode of Thrive Solo is the wonderful Cindy Sheehan. In 2016, Cindy was a married Mum of four when she took a leave of absence from her office job in Colorado and joined two friends to go backpacking on The Kerry Way in Ireland. Little did she know at the time that that trip would be the beginning of a brand new life. By the end of 2017, she had quit both her job and her marriage to become a full-time traveller, and she has since travelled to nearly 50 countries. Cindy has settled in Palermo, Sicily for now, although who knows where life might take her next. Now while she lives a largely solo life, Cindy has a French, paraglider boyfriend — otherwise known as The Frenchman — who lives in France, and although the two of them spend more time apart than they do together, they meet when they can for travelling adventures. I know that you will love hearing all about Cindy's solo life and travels. In this conversation she shares her transformative experience of leaving a 30-year marriage to travel the world, settling temporarily in various countries, and eventually obtaining an EU passport through Italian ancestry. She talks about the unique relationship dynamics with her French partner, the challenges and rewards of solo travel, and the profound sense of freedom it brings. The season marked an end to a ban that had been in place since the late 1980s. The Louisiana bear population has rebounded thanks to conservation efforts, leading the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries to re-establish a limited, lottery-based season with 11 permits issued to hunters. Twenty-five years ago, as a long summer drew to a close, a night out ended in tragedy. It changed the lives of four young men forever, ending another's far too soon. It happened in the leafy, affluent suburb of Donnybrook in south Dublin. A fight broke out among a group of young men outside Anabel's nightclub. When it was over, 18-year-old Brian Murphy lay on the ground. Hours later, he was pronounced dead. What followed wasn't just a murder investigation - it was a case that exposed a deep divide in Irish society, focusing on the Dublin southside rugby schools and Blackrock College in particular. Following months of speculation and negotiations, the European Union has finally struck a trade agreement with the US which will see both sides settle for a 15pc baseline tariff rate on EU imports to the US. First introduced in 2018 by senator Frances Black, the Occupied Territories Bill is increasingly the subject of public pressure and debate, as Taoiseach Micheál Martin and Tánaiste Simon Harris continue to address criticism. And it's not just here at home, with a growing number of international political voices chiming in, some in a more derogatory fashion than others. US ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee slated the Occupied Territories Bill and told Ireland to "sober up." "Did the Irish fall into a vat of Guinness," he posted on Twitter. The diplomat said the bill was "so stupid" it smacked of "diplomatic intoxication". The Taoiseach has stressed that people needed to focus on the ongoing loss of life in Gaza and across the Middle East. Lawyers for Conor McGregor dramatically withdrew a bid to introduce new evidence in his civil rape case appeal. Evidence included allegations made by Samantha O'Reilly and Steven Cummins – former neighbours of Ms Nikita Hand. Ms Hand's counsel John Gordon said his side was in ‘shock' at the late withdrawal of the fresh evidence application. In her affidavit, Ms O'Reilly had claimed she was woken by sounds of “screaming and shouting” from Ms Hand's house. Looking from her window, she said she could see “Ste's arms moving up and down as if he was hitting Nikita”. “I also saw him moving his hips in a way that indicated to me that he was kicking her,” she claimed. In an affidavit, Ms Hand dismissed this account. "My ex-partner Stephen Redmond [known as 'Ste'] did not assault me on the night of December 9/10, 2018, and never assaulted me in the course of our relationship, or since," she said. "I don't want to speculate on why Samantha and Steven are making up these lies." Ms Hand's counsel John Gordon said his side was in “shock” at the late withdrawal of the fresh evidence application. He said it was "not appropriate" to dress up the withdrawal of the application in such a way. The barrister said Ms Hand had been “put through the wringer” after the allegation, which she denounced as “lies”, was outlined in court and reported in the newspapers. Today on the Indo Daily, Fionnán Sheahan is joined by Shane Phelan, Legal Affairs Editor with the Irish Independent, to unpack a busy opening day in Conor McGregor's civil rape appeal.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Six months into the new Government, and all seems to be oddly quiet in the world of Irish politics. Yes, we've had the furore over the Regional Independent Group's support for the Coalition, Verona Murphy's survival of no-confidence and the ruckus that followed Michael Lowry's memorable two-finger salute. But since the dust settled on all the “ruaille buaille” of those rocky first days in January, business has been unusually quiet in Dáil Éireann. So, what has this Government actually achieved so far? Has it lived up to its numerous election promises? Or is it simply too early to call our elected officials to account?
