Following months of speculation and negotiations, the European Union has finally struck a trade agreement with the US which will see both sides settle for a 15pc baseline tariff rate on EU imports to the US. Although an out-and-out trade war appears to have been averted, the agreement is being described in certain quarters as a “capitulation” by the world's largest trading bloc. Today on The Indo Daily, Fionnán Sheahan is joined by Dónal O'Donovan, Group Business Editor with the Irish Independent – to break down the finer details of the deal, and to find out what implications it will have for Ireland's economy. It's a bitter, messy row with multiple parties involved, and many, many millions on the line. John Magnier – one of Ireland's wealthiest men and a notoriously private individual – has taken the stand in a high-stakes legal row over an estate that makes Downton Abbey look modest. Land, riches and reputations are all on the line, with recent evidence hearing details of secret phones, wiped computers, hidden assets and ‘dirty' money. First introduced in 2018 by senator Frances Black, the Occupied Territories Bill is increasingly the subject of public pressure and debate, as Taoiseach Micheál Martin and Tánaiste Simon Harris continue to address criticism. And it's not just here at home, with a growing number of international political voices chiming in, some in a more derogatory fashion than others. US ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee slated the Occupied Territories Bill and told Ireland to "sober up." "Did the Irish fall into a vat of Guinness," he posted on Twitter. The diplomat said the bill was "so stupid" it smacked of "diplomatic intoxication". The Taoiseach has stressed that people needed to focus on the ongoing loss of life in Gaza and across the Middle East. Former Taoisigh, human rights advocates and cage fighters alike have thrown their names into the mix. Lawyers for Conor McGregor dramatically withdrew a bid to introduce new evidence in his civil rape case appeal. Evidence included allegations made by Samantha O'Reilly and Steven Cummins – former neighbours of Ms Nikita Hand. Ms Hand's counsel John Gordon said his side was in ‘shock' at the late withdrawal of the fresh evidence application. In her affidavit, Ms O'Reilly had claimed she was woken by sounds of “screaming and shouting” from Ms Hand's house. Looking from her window, she said she could see “Ste's arms moving up and down as if he was hitting Nikita”. “I also saw him moving his hips in a way that indicated to me that he was kicking her,” she claimed. In an affidavit, Ms Hand dismissed this account. "My ex-partner Stephen Redmond [known as 'Ste'] did not assault me on the night of December 9/10, 2018, and never assaulted me in the course of our relationship, or since," she said. "I don't want to speculate on why Samantha and Steven are making up these lies." Ms Hand's counsel John Gordon said his side was in “shock” at the late withdrawal of the fresh evidence application. He said it was "not appropriate" to dress up the withdrawal of the application in such a way. The barrister said Ms Hand had been “put through the wringer” after the allegation, which she denounced as “lies”, was outlined in court and reported in the newspapers. Today on the Indo Daily, Fionnán Sheahan is joined by Shane Phelan, Legal Affairs Editor with the Irish Independent, to unpack a busy opening day in Conor McGregor's civil rape appeal.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Conor McGregor's appeal against a ruling in a civil rape case has began. In November 2024, Nikita Hand, who accused him of raping her, won her claim against him for damages, with McGregor ordered to pay her more than €248,000 (£206,000). Lawyers for McGregor have dramatically withdrawn a bid to introduce new evidence in his civil rape appeal. The MMA fighter had asked the Court of Appeal to allow in new claims that Nikita Hand was punched and kicked by her then partner just hours after she says she was raped by McGregor in 2018. However, the allegations, made by former neighbours of Ms Hand, were withdrawn as a ground of appeal this morning.Fionnán Sheahan is joined by Shane Phelan, Legal Affairs Editor with the Irish Independent, to unpack a busy opening day in Conor McGregor's civil rape appeal. Six months into the new Government, and all seems to be oddly quiet in the world of Irish politics. Yes, we've had the furore over the Regional Independent Group's support for the Coalition, Verona Murphy's survival of no-confidence and the ruckus that followed Michael Lowry's memorable two-finger salute. But since the dust settled on all the “ruaille buaille” of those rocky first days in January, business has been unusually quiet in Dáil Éireann. So, what has this Government actually achieved so far? Has it lived up to its numerous election promises? Or is it simply too early to call our elected officials to account? That Gerry-shaped hole has never quite been filled at RTÉ. At his best, the Dubliner was a broadcaster of the first rank, one who could delight, entertain, inform, infuriate and challenge the listener – often over the course of a single show. He was an undeniable force of nature in the world of Irish broadcasting. Controversy also didn't really faze the man, in fact, he made his career off the back of it. His voracious appetite for life, and indeed becoming a major part of the lives of his audience, was quintessential Gerry Ryan, as was his signature rambunctious approach to the microphone.
