A newly premiered Chinese counterintelligence TV drama Jiaofeng has captured widespread attention on both the Chinese mainland and Taiwan. The last time that Taipei elected a mayor from the Democratic Progressive Party was Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁) in 1994. At the time it seemed like some kind of a breakthrough because Taipei is known to be a Chinese Nationalist Kuomintang stronghold. During his tenure as mayor of Taipei, Chen Shui-bian had a very high public approval rating of over 70% to nearly 80%. In spite of this he was not reelected for a second term. Instead, the Chinese Nationalist Kuomintang candidate Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) was elected mayor of Taipei. In July Puma Shen (沈伯洋) who's currently a Legislator in Taiwan's Legislative Yuan came to the U.S. for an eight-day trip. Puma is an Associate Professor at National Taipei University's Graduate School of Criminology, Co-Founder of Doublethink Lab, Co-Founder of Kuma Academy, and this year's Taipei City mayoral candidate for Democratic Progressive Party. According to a poll released by Taiwan Brain Trust in May, the incumbent Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an (蔣萬安) led DPP Taipei mayoral candidate Puma Shen (沈伯洋) by more than 20 points. Puma gave a talk when he was in New York on July 24th and many people showed up to hear him speak. We were at his talk and wanted to share some translated highlights from it. The Erin Patterson matter is before the Victorian Court of Appeal this week, in the form of two major challenges to the outcome of Australia's infamous mushroom murder trial.In this episode of The Mushroom Murder Trial Podcast, we examine the Department of Prosecutions (DPP) appeal against Erin Patterson's sentence and Patterson's own appeal against her convictions for murdering Don and Gail Patterson and Heather Wilkinson, and attempting to murder Ian Wilkinson, after a deadly July 2023 family lunch involving death cap mushrooms.Patterson was sentenced to life imprisonment with a 33-year non-parole period. On this week's Bandwagon Nerds, we take a look at the latest trailers for The Greatest, Godzilla: Minus Zero, and Dune: Part 3. From there, we resume our review of Season 2 of X-Men '97. The valiant effort to prevent Apocalypse from becoming the scourge of the X-Men's existence went predictably badly. But after the events of Episode 4, saying that things will never be the same might not be hyperbole. Speaking of things going badly, Microsoft laid off 20% of its staff, calling many aspects of Xbox's future into question. Meanwhile, executives at Netflix and Disney flirted with some ideas that just do not seem likely to move the needle much, if at all. We then return to the 1980's and, this time around, we drafted our favorite intros from comedies. The 80's were absolutely stacked with top-notch comedies, and while the #1 overall pick will probably not surprise anyone, the remaining picks are certainly intriguing enough to keep you entertained. Lai Ching-te's tenure as the head of the Democratic Progressive Party authorities of China's Taiwan region has been marked by a series of missteps and failures that have not only strained cross-Strait relations but also undermined the island's development prospects.Contrary to his shameless claim in a speech on Wednesday marking the two-year anniversary of his tenure that he has maintained the status quo of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, the DPP authorities have stubbornly adhered to a "Taiwan independence" stance, peddled separatist fallacies and obstructed cross-Strait exchanges.That speech was a response, if not a desperate "don't desert me" plea, to US President Donald Trump's Friday interview, in which the US leader stated, "We're not looking to have somebody say, 'Let's go independent because the United States is backing us'." This remark dealt a heavy blow to Lai.In his speech — yet another litany of lies and deceit — Lai openly groveled to Washington, begging for an opportunity to tell the US leader that he wishes to continue purchasing US weapons, which he misleadingly labeled as essential to peace. Ironically, he tried to assure his audience that the island's future would not be determined by external forces just moments after trying to solicit US support.In an attempt to conceal his secessionist nature, Lai peddled a so-called "Taiwan subject mentality" in his speech, openly seeking to sever the island from the Chinese motherland.This "soft independence" is hidden and pernicious, no less harming than the DPP authorities' overt political separatist sloganeering.Evidently anxious over the US leader's remarks, Lai posted a so-called "five-point speech" on Facebook on Sunday, in which he called black white, barefacedly claiming that his authorities are the protectors of regional peace. Yet to his horror, that "carefully worded" message failed to elicit the hoped for response from Washington — explaining why Lai doubled down on his efforts to appeal to the US not to give up on him.If Lai truly intends to show the world that he is not a secessionist and that he is committed to peace and stability, he should simply pledge his support for the 1992 Consensus and stop fawning over the US.The true color of his secessionist feather is laid bare by the extraordinary lengths he has gone to in an attempt to conceal his separatist nature — and his fear of losing US support for his political agenda.The predicament Taiwan faces today stems from the DPP authorities' long-standing practice of placing ideological manipulation above reality, staking the island's security on the will of the US, and tying the future of Taiwan people to the dangerous path of seeking "Taiwan independence" through reliance on external forces. Once Washington shows even signs of shifting priorities, that layer of illusion surrounding the DPP authorities' reckless approach will be stripped away. In short, "Taiwan independence" is a dead end.Lai's latest remarks do not signal any abandonment of "Taiwan independence", but rather a repackaging of it in more carefully crafted rhetoric."Taiwan independence" is fundamentally incompatible with peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait. The expansion of separatist forces advocating "Taiwan independence" will ultimately push Taiwan toward a dangerous abyss — a trajectory that runs counter not only to the interests of the Chinese nation, but also to the strategic interests of the US. In this sense, curbing "Taiwan independence" separatist activities and maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait serve the shared interests of both China and the US. Lai's remarks further underscore the reality that "Taiwan independence" has become a common challenge confronting both Beijing and Washington.There is but one China in the world and that Taiwan is part of China. The China-United States summit has dealt a severe blow to the "pro-independence" stance of Taiwan's ruling Democratic Progressive Party and sent a clear warning to separatist forces, experts said.During his talks with US President Donald Trump on Thursday, President Xi Jinping underscored that safeguarding peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait remained the biggest common denominator between China and the US.Noting that the Taiwan question is the most important issue in China-US relations, Xi told Trump that if it is handled properly, the bilateral relationship will enjoy overall stability. Otherwise, the two countries will have clashes and even conflicts, putting the entire relationship in great jeopardy. Xi emphasized that "Taiwan independence" and cross-Strait peace are as irreconcilable as fire and water.In an interview with Fox News on Friday, Trump said: "I'm not looking to have somebody go independent," adding that Taiwan should not expect a "blank check" from the US military.Foreign Minister Wang Yi, while briefing the media about the summit on Friday, said: "During the meeting, we felt that the US side understands China's position, attaches importance to China's concerns, and, just like the international community, does not stand for or accept Taiwan moving toward independence."Liu Kuangyu, a researcher at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences' Institute of Taiwan Studies, said that at the landmark summit, China made clear its stance, its bottom line, propositions, and also sincere goodwill regarding Taiwan-related affairs."Rather than letting hostile sentiments spiral upward, the pragmatic exchanges reflected a shared readiness to reduce strategic miscalculations, mitigate cross-Strait tensions, and eliminate the risks of unintended military clashes," Liu said.He added that the proper and positive handling of the Taiwan question will substantially shape the outcomes achieved at the summit and determine how effectively the two sides can sustain constructive, strategic stability going forward.Liu said that if China and the US aim to solidify a major-country relationship over the coming years, the Taiwan question must serve as the primary entry point.Meanwhile, opposition parties and politicians in Taiwan severely condemned the ruling authorities for fabricating cross-Strait crises.Cheng Li-wun, chairwoman of the major opposition Chinese Kuomintang party, slammed the DPP's cross-Strait strategy, saying that "Taiwan independence" is a dead end that leads nowhere and the summit has shattered the DPP's international illusions.KMT lawmaker Niu Hsu-ting told reporters that the summit's ripple effects will gradually surface, and the US clearly signaled conflict reduction, pouring "cold water" over the DPP's long-held separatist stance and its flawed narrative of guaranteed military defense from the US.In a statement, Taiwan's Labor Party also warned that the DPP's separatist line remains the primary source of risk driving regional volatility.The party condemned the administration's continuous military expansion, specifically referencing the newly passed defense budget, of which NT$780 billion ($24.7 billion) has been earmarked for procuring arms from the US.It said that pouring vast public resources and taxpayers' money into endless weapon purchases directly sacrificed the livelihood of the grassroots.Looking ahead, Liu of the Institute of Taiwan Studies warned that the US must exercise the utmost prudence to prevent triggering a great-power confrontation and refrain from maintaining illicit ties with the Taiwan authorities across political, military, legal, economic and ideological domains."They must recognize that the past tactics of using Taiwan as a so-called pawn or tool to contain China have actually done more harm than good in the long run and ultimately boomeranged," he said.Only by translating political commitments into tangible actions can both nations consolidate the foundation of strategic mutual trust, he added.

If you like what you are reading, please consider subscribing and/or sharing!Diabetes Prevention Programs are a group of programs that are created to prevent the onset of Type 2 Diabetes, often in people who have been identified as at-risk. Most include behavior changes, social support, and include weight loss as a metric and/or the primary outcome. The assumption is typically that any health changes and/or reductions in the development of T2D are because of any weight loss. In discussing these programs previously I've expressed the concern that any differences in health/T2D development were more likely due to behavior changes/support than any weight loss and that, because of their insistence on a weight-loss focus, the programs likely included much more restriction than is necessary to create any health changes, which could create harms including weight cycling (which can actually drive T2D,) weight stigma (which can actually drive T2D,) and disengagement from behaviors that might actually support health and make T2D less likely (with the clear and critical understanding that whether or not someone develops T2D involves myriad factors, many of which are completely outside of their control, including genetics.)Enter the new systematic review “Potential mechanisms for change in diabetes prevention programs” which sought “to investigate potential mechanisms for change in diabetes prevention programs (DPPs), and assess the strength of associations.” Their hypothesis was that “ Weight loss would be less strongly associated with improved health than other mechanisms.” SummaryA group of researchers, several of whom work in weight inclusive Type 2 Diabetes preventions and management, sought to fill a gap in research around Diabetes Prevention Programs (DPPs). These program seek to delay/prevent onset of Type 2 Diabetes and typically include multiple interventions but often target an end goal of weight loss. There is a significant lack of research that even attempts to determine which aspects of DPPs might actually be responsible for any benefits and which might be unhelpful or cause harm. These researchers undertook a systematic review to attempt to determine just that. The AuthorsWe'll begin, as we always do, with the authors. Spoiler alert, this is going to be much shorter than these typically are. The study received no funding and the authors disclosed no conflicts of interest. I'll do my usual deeper dive into their work and, as a reminder, working in the space in which you are researching is not considered a conflict of interest that requires disclosure but is something that always makes me give extra scrutiny to methodology. Blunt - is a Research and Education Librarian, Public Health Lead in Medical and Health Sciences at the Dartmouth Biomedical Libraries with subspecialties in Medical and Health SciencesThe StudyThe authors begin by explaining diabetes prevention programs (DPPs), including that they can vary but often have multiple components including medical and/or psychosocial interventions. They point to the DPP-ILI (Intensive Lifestyle Intervention) as a typical intervention that focuses on creating 7% weight loss using multiple components. They also point out that in one study the DPP-ILI reduced diabetes incidence by 58% compared to a placebo, but that participants don't necessarily find the program either “helpful or tolerable” and the programs often having drop out rates from 40-80%. They also note that the DPP-ILI contains multiple elements - change in weight, physical activity, food, social support, psychological change, education, and self-monitoring and self-awareness that may impact onset of diabetes. Finally, the authors point out that “despite their efficacy, it is possible that DPPs may include harmful elements such as exposure to weight stigma or healthism.” I'll also add, based on about 100 years of research, exposure to the harms of weight cycling since the vast majority of people who lose weight will gain it back.Here the researchers hit on an issue I would suggest is not just with DPPs but with all health interventions that are based on weight loss. As these authors put it, “it is striking how little is known about which components of these interventions cause a delay in diabetes onset, and which components may cause harm.” As is, again, the case with almost all, if not all , research that tries to claim that weight loss create health benefits, more than twenty years in, the research into the DPP-ILI “was not designed to test the relative contributions of dietary changes, increased physical activity, and weight loss to the reduction in the risk of diabetes.” Given our culture's obsession with weight loss (driven by, and with tremendous profit to, the weight loss industry,) the assumption with the DPP (and in general) is always that weight loss (and, typically, very small amounts of weight loss) causes health benefits, literally ignoring all of the behavior changes and other components that precede both the (small, typically temporary) weight loss and the health changes/benefits. The researchers note that “clinicians have focused on the importance of weight loss…recommending weight loss, however, may be a particularly likely candidate to cause harmful or null effects in DPPs.”Considering weight loss, the researchers note that long-term weight loss is “not achievable for most people” and, further, that weight loss programs can induce or exacerbate weight stigma and expose participants to discrimination. The Agency Brief Agency Update “The government looked at a piece of plastic on the back of a rifle, panicked, and spent ten years proving that gun control is a complete myth.” THE INTEL (THE STORY) The Play-by-Play: 1989 Catalyst: The Stockton school shooting gives gun control groups their emotional leverage. The media pivots away from the shooter's massive rap sheet to demonize the “evil” semi-auto rifle. What the Media Lied About: They flat-out lied that military machine guns were flooding the streets. Anti-gun activist Josh Sugarmann explicitly published this strategy: exploit the public's confusion between semi-autos and fully automatic weapons to manufacture outrage. The Architects: Bill Clinton needed a “tough on crime” headline. Sen. Dianne Feinstein drafted the ban, later admitting her true goal on 60 Minutes: “If I could have gotten 51 votes… for an outright ban… Mr. and Mrs. America, turn them all in; I would have done it.” What It Actually Did: Banned 19 specific firearms and semi-autos equipped with two or more “scary” cosmetic features (bayonet lugs, flash suppressors, folding stocks, pistol grips). It also capped new magazines at 10 rounds. The Backroom Deals: Democrats didn't have the votes for a permanent ban. They negotiated a 10-year sunset clause and grandfathered in millions of existing firearms, gambling they could just expand it later. The Workaround: The industry adapted overnight. Manufacturers removed the banned cosmetic plastic and sold functionally identical rifles. Congress literally regulated aesthetics. 2004 Sunset: The ban expires. An official, DOJ-funded study by Christopher Koper concludes the ban did absolutely nothing to reduce gun violence. The Reality Check (Hidden Incentives): Conditioning the Public: This was a psychological op to condition Americans to accept the government banning entire categories of firearms based purely on Hollywood aesthetics. Incrementalism: Lawmakers knew a total gun ban wouldn't fly, so they established the “feature test” as a foothold for future, broader bans. The True Target: The feature ban was mostly temporary political theater; starving the civilian market of standard-capacity magazines was their real long-term objective. Market Impact: They hoped shifting regulations would bankrupt the tactical firearms market with compliance red tape. Instead, they inadvertently birthed the massive modern AR-15 industry. THE 2A ANGLE (LEGAL & IMPACT) The Threat: The '94 ban is the exact blueprint tyrannical blue states (CA, NY, IL, WA) use today to terrorize FFLs and castrate standard rifles. They took a proven federal failure and turned it into permanent state-level law. For modern FFLs, this means SKU-by-SKU compliance nightmares, massive inventory risks, and the constant threat of a new federal ban—which, next time, likely won't include a grandfathering clause. Bruen Test: Text: The Second Amendment protects “arms.” Semi-auto centerfire rifles and standard capacity magazines are plainly protected arms. History & Tradition: There is zero founding-era analogue for restricting arms based on ergonomic grips or muzzle devices. The Founders didn't ban repeating arms when they emerged. Heller / McDonald Check: Arms “in common use for lawful purposes” are fundamentally protected. With over 24 million AR-15s in civilian hands right now, they undeniably satisfy the common use standard. Banning them violates the core of Heller. Bruen kills the feature-test dead; rogue appellate courts are simply playing games to delay the inevitable. Regulatory Creep: The Expanding Ratchet: The feature test is a backdoor trap. It started with bayonet lugs and flash hiders, then moved to pistol braces, threaded barrels, and parts kits. Fluid Definitions: Current AWB proposals name over 200 firearms and reduce the threshold to just one aesthetic feature. The Handgun Endgame: Once society accepts that a semi-auto action plus a detachable mag equals a “weapon of war,” your daily-carry Glock 19 or P365 is logically next. On today's episode, we'll discuss the recent meeting between Chinese leader Xi Jinping and KMT Chairwoman Cheng Li-wun, the first in a decade between a Chinese Communist Party General Secretary and a KMT Chair. Ms. Cheng was elected party chair only four months ago, and her top priority was to meet with Xi Jinping. She has not yet visited the United States, but says she intends to do so later this year. In their public statements, Xi Jinping and Cheng Li-wun highlighted several common themes, including opposition to Taiwan independence, support for the 1992 Consensus, shared history and Chinese heritage, that the two sides of the Taiwan Strait are one family, the importance of China's national rejuvenation, and the need to preserve peace and promote the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations. To discuss this historic meeting, I'm joined by Amanda Hsiao. Amanda is a director in Eurasia Group's China practice covering China's foreign policy and cross-strait relations. From the issues raised in portraying a violently racist policeman in 'Detroit' (and the poignancy of the film itself), a powerful back and forth is triggered with Pip and Will, which is the beauty of films like this and how an open discussion can be had which leads into so much more besides - race, politics, society, it's all here. On top of that, you'll hear his tale from the very early days back in 'School Of Comedy' and how his young foot in the acting world's door gave him the necessary inspiration for a full on career, Will drops some gems from his unique perspective on his experience with acting and his ascent from those younger days right up to 'Son Of Rambow', 'The Maze Runner' and 'The Revenant', the latter of which had him up alongside Leonardo Di Caprio and Tom Hardy no less. A rich and diverse filmography right there, which has in many ways freed him from his somewhat reductive nickname of 'that Weird Eyebrow Actor'.
