Rationing. It's a word which sends shivers down the spine. A word which conjures up Spam and powdered eggs, potato peel pie and cabbage. Endless cabbage. But it wasn't all doom and gloom. And today we celebrate the woman who taught Britain how to 'make do': the glorious Marguerite Patten. Her recipes went down in history and she's still the cook with the most books – 170 at the last count. Marguerite was the first TV chef, the first to publish a colour cookbook and the first to recognise the magic of gadgets. So pull up a chair and feed your mind as we tuck into some of her recipes in the company of the food writer Claire Thomson, AKA @5oclockapron. In this episode of The Wrap, Chris Whalen reveals an "explosive" John Dizard interview dropping next week on rationing of synthetic lubricants for turbines and hybrid cars before the midterms, while the Trump administration stays blind to the supply crisis from destroyed Persian Gulf refineries. Markets are already processing the damage, but the Trump admin lacks the organization to prepare Americans for coming energy rationing and diesel shortages. Whalen argues the Fed is "powerless" against external war-driven shocks, yet double-digit inflation is "locked in" for certain categories. He's taking profits on AI stocks (AMD, ARM) after 150-200% gains, bought back into Chevron, and declares Bitcoin "toast" as the crypto bubble bursts. He warns communities blocking data center projects will become "very significant negatives" for AI, and describes the current market as "manic"—driven purely by Fed Covid cash into AI stocks as people chase shiny objects rather than value. Monetary-Metals.com/julia Links:    The Institutional Risk Analyst: https://www.theinstitutionalriskanalyst.com/  The Wrap: https://www.theinstitutionalriskanalyst.com/post/theira852Inflated book (2nd edition): https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/inflated-r-christopher-whalen/1146303673Twitter/X: https://twitter.com/rcwhalen    Use the code TheWrap2026 for 25% off your first year of The Institutional Risk Analyst https://www.theinstitutionalriskanalyst.com/plans-pricingTimestamps:0:00 Intro and welcome 01:00 Markets this week - Tech hit hard, gold erased gains, Bitcoin crushed4:02 John Dizard interview - Rationing synthetic lubricants before midterms5:30 Trump admin blind to crisis, needs WWII-level mobilization7:58 Suppliers already rationing, July/August shortages pronounced10:41 Double-digit inflation locked in, Fed powerless against external shocks11:58 Taking profits on AI - Sold AMD, ARM, back into Chevron13:19 Fed doesn't understand financial markets or mortgage servicing14:40 Bond spreads tight - Scarcity of quality assets17:28 Bill Pulte as Acting Director of National Intelligence - Political payback20:20 Trump shoots from hip, alienating Republicans, can't get anything done21:02 Kevin Warsh quote - 3% inflation destroys economies22:10 Gold erased 2026 gains - Higher rates, Bitcoin collapse23:48 Bitcoin toast - BlackRock selling, crypto bubble burst25:19 Manic market not driven by value, chasing AI26:00 Communities blocking data center projects - Politics killing AI27:07 Bubble driven by Fed Covid cash flood28:43 Parting thoughts - Fishing in Maine, Dizard interview next week

Thirty years ago, I was the station manager and breakfast announcer at a very small experimental talk station in Auckland called ‘The Point' on 1476 AM. It lasted for about three years. It was a lot of fun. Now I mention this because I clearly remember 30 years ago a morning when we discussed what happens to New Zealand when the Maui and Kapuni gas runs out, because even then scientists were warning that supplies were limited and they were dwindling. That was 30 years ago, and the alarm bells were already ringing. Our failing gas is not some new problem and yet you have to say in the 30 years that have passed, as a country we have done little to pre-empt the impact. In the years since then we have become more efficient at using the gas we've got, we've become more efficient at extracting the gas we've got and so the deadline has been extended, but now it appears we're coming to the pointy end. The end of gas in New Zealand. In the past 30 years we've not found more and we have, you could argue, used our remaining stocks willy nilly. Industries have become more dependent not less. Now the last Labour Government was part of the problem. Yes, they curtailed gas exploration, but at the same time nobody found gas for the last 30-50 years and we've been looking. But what the Labour Government did do was suggest a gas transition scheme, and if you've forgotten about it, it was called the Government Investment in Decarbonising Industry fund, GIDI, otherwise known as Giddy. It directly subsidised large businesses using fossil fuels like natural gas and coal to help them switch to renewable electricity or biomass. But when the latest government came in two years ago, they scrapped that. They didn't like the way it was sheeted home to the emission reduction plans because that was far too green for them, and they didn't like the way the taxpayer was directly funding industry so they cancelled it. And they banked $640 million that had been set aside for it. But they didn't have anything to replace Giddy with two years ago. Now they do and it's called the Gas Transition Loan Guarantee Scheme. It's worth about $1.2 billion. It will only directly cost the Government about $48 million. They guarantee the loans, right? Well, I'll tell you how it works. They underwrite 80% of each loan which allows banks to offer lower interest rates. The loans can be up to $50 million, must be new lending, it'll run for 10 years, and the budget has set aside $48 million to cover potential costs and losses. So it's much cheaper than the Labour scheme. It depends on the commercial banks to loan to businesses. My question to you is will they, would they, can they? The goal of course is to help firms switch to alternative fuels, to protect jobs, and to leave remaining gas —because there is some there— to help the industries that are absolutely dependent on it. The scheme sits within the Government's broader budget focus. They've got four pillars of national security: international security, energy independence, social cohesion, and financial security. And the Prime Minister when announcing all this yesterday said New Zealand cannot compete globally without abundant affordable energy, obviously. To qualify a business must use natural gas and consume at least 1,000 gigajoules a year. That's about 40 times the usage of a typical household. That would be a commercial kitchen in a restaurant, wouldn't it? That'd basically be everybody except those people using gas at home to cook and to heat their water. Eligible sectors include food processors, brewers, hotels, aged care facilities, greenhouse growers. Some of the country's largest gas users they use 300,000 gigajoules annually. The Energy Minister is Simeon Brown and he says the loans will help businesses switch to electricity or bioenergy or other efficient technologies. “We are running out of gas very quickly. We have had a 23% reduction in New Zealand's gas reserves in the past year and production this year is now expected to be 15% lower than expected at the beginning of this year. And so that is a significant reduction. That means for those businesses that rely on gas there's less of it going around, prices are increasing, it's harder to get contracts and a lot of this is due to the last government you know putting the one the ban on oil and gas exploration in place and diminishing its role in our economy. And so we've a role to make sure we support those businesses through this transition to make sure that we can protect jobs and industry.” He's not wrong. The ban on oil and gas exploration put a bit of a tiahoa on everything, but to find a bit of gas and then to get it out into your into your cooker, that's a 10 to 20 year infrastructure job. So really we should have found the gas ages ago, and as I said right at the beginning, we were warning about this 30 years ago. Alongside the local program, the loan program, the Government will introduce new legislation requiring gas companies to tell us exactly how much gas we've got, and surely that makes sense. Regulations could be in place by the end of the year. Are you using gas and if so, why? Why when we knew 30 years ago that it was finite, why weren't we rationing it out from that point of time? What are your thoughts about this the way the scheme works? The previous Government, the Labour Government basically said here's a billion, change. And that was money straight out of your and my pocket as taxpayers. This Government doesn't like doing that and they've said okay commercial banks you loan them the money, we'll underwrite that and we'll put aside some money for those loans that go a little bit south, and that's about $48 million. That's a very crucial difference between two different types of governments. One socialist, the other a bit more capitalist and market based. What do you feel about that? In this episode of The Wrap, Chris Whalen breaks down how the Iran war situation is sinking GOP hopes for the midterms as he predicts double-digit inflation by year end driven by critical petroleum product shortages, with John Dizard warning rationing is coming to the United States for intensive products like gas turbine lubricants. Whalen explains the Fed will be forced to hike rates as early as July according to Diane Swonk, representing a dramatic shift from rate cut expectations just weeks ago, though raising rates won't help with external war-driven inflation and politics will eventually force cuts if the economy slows. He reveals real gas prices are actually low when adjusted for 15 years of dollar purchasing power loss, discusses how the politics of affordability will reshape the landscape with Republicans at risk of losing both House and Senate, and maintains his long gold position as inflation hedge while viewing silver as a commercial play on technology demand. Whalen details Kevin Warsh's strategy to shrink the Fed balance sheet while credibly cutting short-term rates by forcing markets to absorb more duration, explains why the 1970s stock market stagnation differs from today due to demographics and higher stock ownership, predicts Social Security will eventually be means-tested as the math has reversed from 10 workers per retiree to the opposite, and argues passive investment mechanisms killed crypto with Wall Street ETFs now controlling price action. Thank you to our partners at Goldco. Stijn Schmitz welcomes Colonel Douglas Macgregor to the show. Douglas is a retired U.S. Army Colonel & Decorated Combat Veteran. In a comprehensive analysis, Macgregor provides a dire assessment of the current geopolitical and economic landscape, focusing on the potential escalation of conflict in the Middle East and its global implications. Macgregor warns of a severe global crisis emerging from ongoing tensions, particularly highlighting the devastating impact on the global energy and fertilizer markets. He explains that approximately 15-20 million barrels of oil have been removed from the market, and 35% of global fertilizer production has been disrupted. This disruption could lead to widespread food shortages, potential famines in the global south, and significant economic challenges for countries worldwide. The discussion centers on the potential for a massive air and missile campaign against Iran, which Macgregor believes could be catastrophically counterproductive. He argues that Iran has substantially rebuilt its military capabilities, with an estimated 45-50,000 drones and 15-20,000 ballistic and cruise missiles, supported by improved air defense systems from China and Russia. Macgregor critically examines the motivations behind the potential conflict, suggesting it stems from Israeli demands and pressure from what he calls the “Zionist billionaire class.” He emphasizes the potential economic consequences, including a possible global recession or depression, disruptions in shipping, and severe energy shortages. The conversation also delves into broader economic implications, including the potential death of the petrodollar, resource nationalism, and the importance of hard assets like gold and silver. Macgregor strongly advises investors to prepare for challenging times by investing in tangible assets and maintaining cash reserves. Ultimately, he calls for rational leadership to prevent a potential humanitarian disaster, warning that the current trajectory could lead to significant global instability and economic upheaval. Macgregor’s analysis presents a stark and sobering view of the current geopolitical and economic landscape. In 2020, the President appointed Macgregor to serve as Senior Advisor to the Secretary of Defense, a post he held until President Trump left office. He holds an MA in comparative politics and a PhD in international relations from the University of Virginia. Macgregor is widely known inside the U.S., Europe, Israel, Russia, China and Korea for both his leadership in the Battle of 73 Easting, the U.S. Army's largest tank battle since World War II, and for his ground breaking books on military transformation: Breaking the Phalanx (Praeger, 1997) and Transformation under Fire (Praeger, 2003). Macgregor's recommendations for change in Force Design and “integrated all arms-all effects” operations have profoundly influenced force development in Israel, Russia and China. In 2010, Macgregor traveled to Seoul, Korea to advise the ROK Ministry of Defense on force design. In 2019, Transformation under Fire was selected by Lt. Gen. Aviv Kohavi, Chief of the Israeli Defense Force (IDF), as the intellectual basis for IDF transformation. His fifth book, Margin of Victory: Five Battles that Changed the Face of Modern War from Naval Institute Press is available in Chinese, as well as, English and will soon appear in Hebrew. Schectman explains how these risks are building quietly beneath the surface—and why most people aren't seeing it.We also examine the real-world economic impact of the escalating conflict with Iran, including early-stage fuel rationing and severe energy strain already hitting Europe hardest. With major disruptions to the Strait of Hormuz—one of the most critical oil chokepoints in the world—global supply is tightening fast, sending prices higher and increasing the likelihood of shortages around the world.  This also raises serious questions about NATO cohesion as member nations face uneven economic pain, and whether energy security will begin to override political unity. We also discuss what this means for the future of global oil trade—are we entering a new era of restricted flows, regional alliances, and long-term supply instability?  Lastly, we discuss the unprecedented deliveries coming out of the COMEX.  Are we witnessing the early stages of a run on physical metals? The Failure of Ultra-Stability: Robert Pearl on Why American Healthcare is Quietly Rationing Us to Death

“It's ultra stable. Health care doesn't move. If you biopsied American health care in 2010 and again in 2026, no one could figure out which slide was which.” — Robert Pearl, MDBad news. The patient, I'm afraid, is ultra-stable. Robert Pearl, former CEO of Kaiser Permanente for eighteen years and author of ChatGPT MD, returns with the bleakest diagnosis we've heard all month. American healthcare, Dr Pearl says, is “ultra stable.” That might sound good. But it's actually very very bad.If you biopsied American healthcare in 2010 and again in 2026, Pearl says, no clinician could tell the slides apart. Both were and are overpriced. Both underperforming. Hospitals still represent between 30-35% of expenses. Costs continue to rise at between 7-9% a year. There remain four hundred thousand misdiagnosis deaths annually. Burnout is stuck at 50%. The numbers haven't moved in fifteen years.Meanwhile, a stealth revolution is already underway. 40% of Americans use generative AI every month for medical questions. 70-80% of physicians use it weekly. While the patients and doctors have moved, the system hasn't. It remains ultra-stable. It's a Kodak moment — healthcare's business model, Pearl suggests, is selling sickness. So, for example, the new new medical thing is GLP-1 drugs that cost $5 to manufacture and sell for $400.So will the system collapse? No, Pearl insists. It has too much strength for that kind of drama. Instead, it will quietly ration us to death — more chronic disease, earlier deaths, more people making a major sacrifice to pay their healthcare bills. Ultra-stability, then, is what is killing the American healthcare system. It will, quite literally, ration us to death. Five Takeaways•       Ultra Stable: Pearl's diagnosis of American healthcare in one phrase. Hospitals stay at thirty to thirty-five per cent of total expenses. Costs rise at seven to nine per cent annually. Life expectancy hasn't budged. Four hundred thousand misdiagnosis deaths a year. Burnout at fifty per cent. Biopsy 2010 and 2026 — no one could tell the slides apart. Both overpriced. Both underperforming.•       The Stealth Revolution Has Already Happened: Forty per cent of Americans use generative AI every month for medical questions. Seventy to eighty per cent of physicians use it weekly. The patients and doctors have moved. The system hasn't. It's a Kodak moment — they had the first filmless camera and let it die because their business model was selling film. Healthcare's business model is selling sickness.•       Quietly Rationed to Death: There will be no dramatic collapse. The system has too much strength for that. Instead: rationing, more chronic disease, earlier deaths. Like airlines moving everyone into first class while the rest drive. Twenty-five per cent of Americans already made a major sacrifice to pay healthcare bills last year. When it hits fifty per cent, maybe the polling places will notice. Pearl is doubtful.•       GLP-1s Cost $5 to Make and $400 to Buy: Yale's analysis: the manufacturing cost of a GLP-1 drug is $5 a month. They sell at a discounted price of $400. That's eighty times markup. Pearl's math: to make GLP-1s cost-neutral against the medical savings, the price has to be under $200. Trump Rx won't help most people because you can't use insurance there and $400 cash is still impossible on $60,000 a year.•       Vibe Coding Is the Prescription: One year old. Lets clinicians build software in plain English without code. Pearl's example: a heart failure patient at home, weighed daily on a Bluetooth scale, with an electronic stethoscope, ankle video, blood oxygen, exercise tolerance — all in an app a doctor could build in a weekend. Three days of fluid retention caught before the ICU admission. Cost: twenty dollars a month. The fix has arrived. On December 22nd, 1991, a 22-year-old medical student from Brisbane crawled under a rock overhang in the Nepalese Himalayas and waited for help. He had a sleeping bag, two chocolate bars, four books, and no way to make fire. No one knew where he was. The record for survival at that elevation in Himalayan winter — without food, without shelter beyond a sleeping bag, without fire — was ten days. Every expert, every search coordinator, every official who looked at the timeline said the same thing. It had been too long. The mountain didn't give people back after this many days. James Scott lasted forty-three. In this episode, Kaycee McIntosh and Julie Henningsen trace every decision that put him under that rock, what his body went through in the weeks that followed, and the two parallel stories running at the same time — a young man alone in the dark doing whatever it took to stay alive, and a sister in Kathmandu who refused, day after day, to accept what everyone around her was saying. This one will stay with you. 00:00 Podcast Intro 00:39 Storm on the Pass 02:35 Alone in the Whiteout 04:19 Shelter Under the Rock 05:16 43 Days Survival Setup 07:04 Backstory and Trek Plan 09:12 Winter Hazards and Bad Gear 12:15 Split Decision at the Pass 14:33 Creek Descent Goes Wrong 16:44 Rationing and Staying Alive 18:26 UV Damage and Darkness 19:26 Search Begins and Family Arrives 20:08 Joanne Refuses Defeat 21:15 Search Limits at Altitude 22:23 Life Under the Overhang 24:16 Why He Stayed Put 25:49 Helicopter Missed Signal 26:28 Giving Up Then Reversing 27:55 Collapse After 100 Meters 29:10 Day 42 Final Flyover 29:48 Blue Sleeping Bag Spotted 31:39 Hospital Recovery and Aftermath 33:30 Other Cases and Key Variables 35:18 Book, Media, and Missing Answers 37:05 Why He Survived 38:31 Hosts Reflect and Wrap   Listen AD FREE: Support our podcast at patreaon: http://patreon.com/TheCruxTrueSurvivalPodcast Email us! thecruxsurvival@gmail.com Instagram https://www.instagram.com/thecruxpodcast/ Get schooled by Julie in outdoor wilderness medicine! https://www.headwatersfieldmedicine.com/   SOURCES Primary Scott, J. and Robertson, J. Global financial analyst and President of Miles Franklin, Andy Schectman, rejoins the Friday Night Economic Review to break down the growing instability in the global economy. We dig into the mounting risks in the private lending market and why this largely unregulated sector could be the next major fault line in the financial system. We also discuss what this means for the future of global oil trade—are we entering a new era of restricted flows, regional alliances, and long-term supply instability?Lastly, we discuss the unprecedented deliveries coming out of the COMEX. Are we witnessing the early stages of a run on physical metals? 1973. Beyond the war, we're hacking into the coming implications of the major energy crisis that's brewing - as the last tankers to leave the Gulf trundle into the ports of Europe. From Volkswagen to venture capital, we'll be charting what life looks like with oil at 150 or 200 dollars a barrel. Energy lockdowns. Rationing. Bond crises. All of these are being whispered in the press right now. As much as our leaders dare. But this is still the Ardennes Forest in spring 1940. Eerily quiet. Soon enough, the flamethrowers will burn through the Old Continent, and then begin to ricochet back onto America itself. Will this break up the order we once took for granted? Are we at the end of the US consumption model of economics? Will resource rich Canada end up speared by its bigger brother? We'll be taking a grand view from the sidelines, as we start to figure out how to live through the latest version of the polycrisis - after 2008, after Covid, after Ukraine - this is the next major re-shaping of the world we live in. On this show, we feature a conversation with author Stan Cox on his latest book, Anthropause, The Beauty of Degrowth. We also feature commentary on the Degrowth Movement from scholars such as Joan Martinez Alier, Jason Hickel, and Richard Wolff. When discussing the movement toward Degrowth, we place it into the context of an ecologic reckoning for an ailing planet. Our U.S. war machine and fossil fuel economy led by Israeli-government-influenced politicians are looking to invade Iran with boots on the ground after the bombing campaigns to get the oil and gas flowing again. This is a suicidal campaign led by entimes Christian and Zionist nihilists who pretend this violence-into-quagmire scenario might have some sort of rosy post-apocalyptic outcome. Yet there is another way that we cannot lose sight of what Henry David Thoreau understood well living under the trees around Walden Pond: voluntary simplicity brings freedom. Frederick Nietzsche once wrote: "Blessed be a modest poverty!” Consider the disasters wrought on us by a sort of dualism that separates humans and nature, man and woman, white and non-white, normal and abnormal. The oil shock has moved way beyond merely being a price problem. It's only been about four weeks but we're seeing major disruptions already, from Australia to South Korea, India, Egypt. Among the hardest hit is the Philippines. The Philippines government has declared a state of emergency. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said fuel supply in the country is in ‘imminent danger' as prices continue to surge because of the war in the Middle East. Meanwhile, Slovenia introduces fuel rationing to stop ‘fuel tourism' and Kenya's flower industry is struggling with cancelled flights and disrupted sales. As Australia closes hundreds of petrol stations, many ask where this crisis is headed, and when it will end. Andrew Peach has the latest. The Trump administration says it will pay the French energy giant, TotalEnergies, nearly $1bn to cancel plans to build wind farms off the US eastern coast. President Trump has moved to scrap sustainable energy sources and increase fossil fuel production. And dynamic ticket pricing is back in the news. A group representing football fans have filed a complaint against FIFA at the European Commission for ‘abusing its monopoly position' in ticket sales for the 2026 World Cup. FIFA says it's focused on ensuring fair access to matches.

Porter explains why the UK grid has become increasingly fragile, why electricity prices remain among the highest in the developed world, and how energy policy is now colliding with economic reality. The conversation explores the technical limits of wind and solar, the challenges of storage and grid stability, and the risks created by over-reliance on intermittent power sources. We also discuss nuclear energy, gas, and the geopolitical pressures shaping energy markets, from supply shocks to global competition for resources. Finally, we debate the political incentives driving Net Zero policy, the widening gap between rhetoric and engineering reality, and whether Britain is sleepwalking into an energy crisis that could carry serious economic and social consequences.A hard-headed conversation about energy, economics, and whether Britain's climate ambitions are colliding with the physical limits of the grid.-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------WATCH THE EXTENDED CONVERSATION HERE: https://open.substack.com/pub/winstonmarshall/p/the-dark-truth-utility-companies?r=18lfab&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web&showWelcomeOnShare=true-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------FOLLOW ME ON SOCIAL MEDIA:Substack: https://www.winstonmarshall.co.uk/X: https://twitter.com/mrwinmarshallInsta: https://www.instagram.com/winstonmarshallLinktree: https://linktr.ee/winstonmarshall----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Chapters00:00 Introduction 01:06 What Net Zero Actually Means02:50 Deindustrialisation and Offshoring Emissions05:00 Why Politicians Treat Net Zero as Dogma07:27 Are Renewables Really Cheap?10:48 Why Wind and Solar Need Gas Backup14:12 The Hidden Risks to the Power Grid17:30 Nuclear Power: The Energy Britain Should Be Building21:15 How Energy Policy Is Destroying UK Industry27:08 The Myth of Cheap Green Energy33:44 Blackouts, Rationing and Grid Fragility40:16 Why Britain Is Losing Energy Security48:06 Global Emissions vs Britain's Tiny Contribution55:10 Why China and Others Aren't Following Net Zero1:10:59 Electrification: Can the Grid Actually Cope?1:13:05 AI Data Centres and Future Electricity Demand1:15:00 Britain's Ageing Gas Fleet and Closure Risk1:20:34 Final Reflections on Britain's Energy Future Hosted on Acast. In this special 20th-anniversary episode, EconTalk's Russ Roberts and returning favorite Michael Munger (appearance #51!) use the legendary Duke-UNC rivalry to explore the fundamental economics question: how do you deal with a world when there isn't enough of something to go around? Along the way, they ask why a university that squeezes students on every other margin, might deliberately forgo a fortune on ticket sales. The answer has everything to do with community, belonging, and the same psychology that bonds fighter pilots and elite military units.

In this episode of Explaining History, Nick explores how nostalgia has become a toxic force in British politics. Drawing on Liam Stanley's Britain Alone, we examine how the "Blitz Spirit" and memories of WWII rationing have been cynically weaponized to justify modern austerity. Why do politicians suggest that food insecure families should "learn lessons from the wartime generation"? We unpack the myth that poverty is a moral failing rather than a structural one, and how the "Make Do and Mend" narrative is used to gaslight a population suffering from 15 years of cuts. From the "creative destruction" of the high street to the privatization of the public realm, Nick argues that the longing for a golden age is a symptom of a society in deep crisis.Plus: Stay tuned for updates on our upcoming live masterclasses for history students launching in January!Key Topics:Toxic Nostalgia: How the memory of WWII is used to enforce social compliance. The Myth of the Blitz: Challenging the idea of universal wartime solidarity.Austerity as Morality Play: The narrative of "strivers vs. skivers."State Intervention: How wartime rationing was actually a form of social protection, unlike modern food banks.Books Mentioned:Britain Alone by Liam StanleyThe People's War by Angus CalderThe Myth of the Blitz by Angus CalderExplaining History helps you understand the 20th Century through critical conversations and expert interviews. In this episode of Excess Returns, Matt sits down with Ben Hunt to break down his new Epsilon Theory essay, World War AI.
