If I mention murder in London during the year of 1888, one name will probably spring to mind, Jack the Ripper, but that wasn't the only serial killer active in London at the time.A short distance away, someone was using the lifeblood of the city, the river Thames, as a place to dispose of their victims.Washing up on the shore, bodies were found along its inlets, discarded, dismembered and defiled, left to the mercy of the tidal waters in the hopes they would be washed away and forgotten. However, the river didn't hide the secrets of this killer, it spewed forth the evidence, allowing it to float along its surface to be discovered by hapless bystanders. But who were these victims and how did they end up being mercilessly discarded into the murky depths of the Thames? With each new body that surfaced, the mystery deepened, leaving the city's residents in fear as a swathe of Londoners had not one but two unidentified murderers prowling the streets, ready to pounce at any time.Today on Macabre London, we uncover the mystery of the Thames Torso Murders.------------------------A big thanks to Magic Mind for their help with todays episode, You can get 20% off a one time purchase or 48% off a subscription at magicmind.com/macabrelt and use the code MACABRELT20 for your fantastic discount. Hello and thank you for downloading another episode of The Flixters Podcast! It's being hailed as the scariest movie of the decade, but can Longlegs really justify the tag? Let's look at the facts. Grisly murders over a long period of time, satanists, creepy dolls, and one very unhinged FBI agent. Maybe it is, but you'll have to download the show to find out! We also take a look at slasher flick, A Violent Nature, which harks back to the classic slasher movies from the 80s. But this one's a bit different in that it's shot from the perspective of the killer, not the victims. Check out the show for more deets. On Anniversary Corner we look back at It Follows (2014). If that's not enough for you, we've even thrown in new trailers to watch and what you can catch on streaming. When you were a kid, were you ever scared to go in the swimming pool in case you might get eaten by a shark? Or just get in the bathtub? Hell, one time I even managed to freak myself out just from laying on a waterbed. This is mainly thanks to Steven Spielberg and a 25-foot mechanical shark called Bruce, but “Jaws” wasn't made in a vacuum. Shark attacks are, thankfully, very rare, but over a century ago there were a series of attacks so shocking and so close together that they cemented the shark as a figure of sharp-toothed horror in the American psyche. The serial killer of the sea, you might say. Basically what we're sayin' here folks, is it's SHARK WEEK on True Crime Campfire. Join us for the terrifying true story of the deadly 1916 shark attacks that inspired the movie "Jaws." This one's not for the faint of heart! Brian Walshe, the 48-year-old Cohasset resident accused of murdering his wife, Ana Walshe, and dismembering her body, is set to receive legal representation from attorney Larry Tipton, who has been appointed as his public defender. The case dates back nearly a year, with Ana Walshe's disappearance and presumed death occurring on New Year's Day. Despite extensive investigations, her body remains undiscovered. The case took a grim turn when prosecutors revealed disturbing internet searches allegedly conducted by Brian Walshe shortly after his wife's disappearance, including inquiries about disposing of a body, dismemberment, and body decomposition. Attorney Larry Tipton spoke to 5 Investigates on Tuesday, confirming his involvement in the case. "I have been asked to represent Mr. Walshe because he requires a public defender. Our focus will be to ensure a fair and just legal process," Tipton stated. The charges brought against Brian Walshe include murder, misleading a police investigation/obstruction of justice, and improper conveyance of a human body. He remains held without bail as the investigation continues. Prosecutors have presented compelling evidence against Walshe, including videos showing him making an unplanned trip to a hardware store where he purchased $450 worth of cleaning supplies in cash. Another video revealed him buying rugs at a different store. Blood and a knife with blood on it were discovered in the basement of the Walshe family's rented home. One of the most significant developments in the case came when investigators uncovered ten bags of evidence at a transfer station in Peabody. These bags contained Ana Walshe's COVID-19 vaccination card, a necklace matching one she was known to wear, a hacksaw, and a hatchet. Crucially, many of these items were found to have blood on them, and DNA analysis linked them to the Walshe family. The prosecution's case is built on a series of compelling pieces of evidence, pointing toward Brian Walshe's involvement in his wife's disappearance and alleged murder. As the legal proceedings move forward, the role of attorney Larry Tipton will be critical in ensuring a fair trial for the accused. The local community continues to closely follow the case, eager for answers surrounding the mysterious disappearance of Ana Walshe. Law enforcement officials have vowed to pursue justice vigorously, and the upcoming legal proceedings will be crucial in determining Brian Walshe's fate. IT WAS A little after 10 p.m. on a Friday evening in the summer of 1921. In their little house on Druid Street in the St. Johns neighborhood of Portland, Robert Green and his family were getting ready for bed when they heard the screams. Rushing to the front porch, they found their neighbor, Ann Louise Agee, in her nightclothes, wild-eyed and disheveled. “Help! Come quick! They're killing Harry!” she screamed. Green looked across at the Agee home. From where he stood, by the light of streetlamps and the few lights inside the house, he could dimly see the front porch. The door was opening and a figure was staggering out of the front door, clutching at its throat. Then it collapsed on the porch. Green sprinted across and leaped onto the porch. There he found his neighbor, carpenter Harry Agee, in a pool of blood, dying. Looking up at him, Harry opened his mouth and tried to speak. Only a ghastly gurgling resulted from the effort. (St. Johns, Multnomah County; 1920s) (For text and pictures, see https://offbeatoregon.com/21-08.harry-agee-murder-mystery-600.html)
McKinney Police Department in Texas has uncovered the remains of Heather Schwab, 35, in a refrigerator hidden away in a walled-off kitchen. The discovery comes over a year after Heather's disappearance, and her boyfriend, Chad Stevens, now faces charges related to tampering with evidence and assault causing physical harm. The investigation was initiated in June when Heather's mother, Tammra Schwab, reported her daughter missing. Despite a strained relationship, Tammra became suspicious when a neighbor revealed not having seen Heather for several months. Tammra, armed with concerns about Chad's alleged threats to Heather's life, took matters into her own hands and provided a crucial lead to the police in early November. According to the warrant, Chad's ex-wife told Tammra that Chad said he "killed Heather and buried her body in his backyard." Police then reached out to the ex-wife, who said that she learned the information from her and Chad's daughter, according to the warrant. Chad's ex-wife further implicated him, disclosing that he had confessed to killing Heather and burying her in his backyard. The information was relayed by their daughter, who also revealed Chad's disturbing threats when she informed him of her pregnancy. This revelation prompted the police to obtain both an arrest and search warrant for Chad's residence. According to the warrant, the daughter told Chad she was pregnant and that he "threatened to kill the baby if she did not have an abortion and even threatened to kill her." His daughter told the detective that she told her father he should be careful about making threats like that since his girlfriend had gone missing, to which her father responded by asking "how she knew about his backyard and a bunch of other random things Briana had not brought up," according to the warrant. Upon searching the house, investigators found a refrigerator wrapped in plastic and concealed behind sheetrock in the kitchen. Inside, they discovered Heather Schwab's body. Chad Stevens, when confronted, admitted to hiding the body, claiming Heather died in July 2022 after hitting her head in the shower. However, the narrative was different from what Stevens told investigators in June when he said Schwab left him and he didn't know where she'd gone. He also gave neighbors a completely different story when they asked where Schwab went, claiming the woman died of cancer. During the search, authorities discovered the suspicious refrigerator wrapped in plastic wrap. The arrest affidavit said the sole entry to the kitchen had been “suspiciously closed and concealed from the remainder of the residence with a piece of sheet rock.” In interviews with McKinney police, Stevens said that Schwab died at his home on July 26, 2022, and that he didn't know what to do, so he put her body in the refrigerator, the affidavit said. However, police suspect she may have died in August based on a 911 call that month involving Chad and Heather. Chad is currently charged with tampering with evidence with intent to impair a human corpse and assault causing physical harm. He has not entered a plea in either case, and additional charges may be filed pending the completion of Heather's autopsy. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? Hidden Killers With Tony Brueski | True Crime News & Commentary
Samuel Haskell IV, the son of a prominent Hollywood agent, has been arrested after surveillance footage obtained by TMZ captured him disposing of what appears to be part of a woman's body in a California strip mall parking lot near his Los Angeles home. The footage, recorded at a dumpster in Encino on Tuesday afternoon, shows Haskell parking his white Tesla, opening the trunk, and removing a large garbage bag. Struggling to lift the unwieldy bag, he hoists it onto his shoulder before tossing it into the dumpster. Two separate clips provide a close-up and a wider view of the unsettling scene. The location of the disturbing act is the same place where a homeless person discovered a woman's torso early Wednesday. Investigators, unable to find identifying signs like tattoos, suspect the torso belongs to Haskell's missing wife, Mei, [May] who, along with her parents, was reported missing before the gruesome discovery. Mei's parents, who lived with the Haskells, haven't been seen since November 6th. Authorities believe they have been murdered, but their remains have yet to be found. Further investigation revealed significant evidence, including blood, inside Haskell's home, suggesting a potential murder scene. Haskell allegedly paid workers $500 to dispose of three large trash bags from his garage the day before the dismembered body was found. Despite claiming the bags contained rocks, the workers, upon inspection, realized the contents were much more sinister. Haskell allegedly attempted to pass off the body parts as Halloween props, but the workers refused to be involved in such macabre activities. The workers later called 911 to report the incident. By the time police arrived at the home, the bags were gone, but authorities say security camera footage appears to show Haskell throwing something in a dumpster in Encino on the same day. Meanwhile, the three children shared by Haskell and his missing wife were found safe at school and placed under the care of the Department of Children and Family Services. This arrest comes amid Haskell's history of violence, including a previous arrest in December 2008 for assault with a deadly weapon, to which he pleaded no contest to battery and was placed on three years' probation in 2010. Haskell was arrested on suspicion of murder and held on $2 million bail. He was officially charged with three counts of murder with special circumstances of committing multiple murders. According to the L.A. County district attorney's office, Haskell could face life in prison without the chance of parole if convicted. His arraignment has been scheduled for December 8. Samuel Haskell IV, the 35-year-old son of former Hollywood agent Samuel Haskell III, has been taken into custody by the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) on suspicion of murder. The arrest follows the disturbing discovery of a dismembered woman's torso in a dumpster, believed to be connected to the disappearance of Haskell's wife, Mei Haskell, and her parents. The investigation began when a homeless man searching for recyclables stumbled upon the gruesome find in a dumpster approximately five miles from Samuel Haskell IV's Tarzana residence. Before this discovery, construction workers had reported seeing suspicious black bags near Haskell's home, raising concerns. However, by the time the police arrived, the bags had vanished. LAPD Detective Efren Gutierrez stated, "There was no evidence that allowed the officers to make entry into the home" during their initial visit. But when the dismembered torso matched the description of the bags reported by the workers, a second crime scene was established at Haskell's residence, where investigators uncovered "blood evidence." Authorities had already received reports of Mei Haskell, 37, and her parents, Yanxiang Wang, 64, and Gaoshan Li, 72, missing before the grim discovery, and their whereabouts remain unknown as of today. The couple's three children were located at school and subsequently placed under the care of the Department of Children and Family Services. Police believe the dismemberment may have been an attempt to delay the identification process, and they will rely on DNA evidence to determine the victim's identity. Samuel Haskell IV's connection to the entertainment industry through his father, Samuel Haskell III, is notable. The elder Haskell served as the executive vice president of the William Morris Agency, representing numerous prominent figures in Hollywood, including George Clooney, Dolly Parton, and Whoopi Goldberg. Haskell III retired in 2005 and currently presides over Magnolia Hill Productions. Haskell III's career also included a stint as the CEO of the Miss America organization, but he resigned amid controversy over emails containing harsh criticism and vulgar comments about past winners. This arrest is not Samuel Haskell IV's first brush with the law. Records obtained by the LA Times reveal that in December 2008, he faced charges of assault with a deadly weapon, ultimately pleading no contest to battery and receiving three years' probation in 2010. A neighbor who had a friendship with Mei Haskell expressed concerns about Samuel Haskell IV, stating, "Something seemed so weird. I kept saying to my family, 'Something is wrong with her husband.'" Samuel Haskell IV is currently being held on $2 million bail at the Valley Jail in Van Nuys in connection with the gruesome torso discovery. The investigation into this chilling murder case continues, with authorities working diligently to piece together the events leading up to this shocking tragedy. A 30-year-old Texas woman, Kassandra Aguayo, has been indicted on one count of first-degree murder in the 2022 slaying of her 66-year-old former live-in boyfriend, Ramon Flores. The indictment follows a chilling sequence of events in which Aguayo is alleged to have put a plastic bag over Flores' head, stabbed him in the stomach, and watched him bleed out to ensure his demise. The tragic incident unfolded on November 11, 2022, when Lubbock Police Department (LPD) officers responded to a call reporting a dead body at a residence in the 5400 block of Interstate 27. Upon arrival, first responders discovered the lifeless body of Ramon Flores, who had apparently succumbed to stab wounds. LPD investigators from the Metropolitan Special Crimes Unit quickly identified Kassandra Aguayo as a person of interest in the case. Subsequently, they obtained a warrant for her arrest. On November 18, 2022, deputies with the Hale County Sheriff's Office located Aguayo at a residence on West 5th Street in Plainview, where she was taken into custody and charged with Flores' murder. Following her initial arrest, Aguayo was initially booked into the Hale County Detention Center before being transferred to the Lubbock County Detention Center, where she has remained in detention. A probable cause affidavit sheds light on the horrifying details of the crime. It states that Aguayo allegedly confessed to a friend, who subsequently shared the information with the police. According to the affidavit, Aguayo described her actions, starting with an attempt to suffocate Flores with a plastic bag. She resorted to stabbing him in the torso multiple times when that method failed. "The knife had broken, so [Aguayo] got another knife from the kitchen and stabbed him again," the affidavit reportedly stated. Shockingly, Aguayo allegedly told the witness that she watched Flores to ensure he died. Investigators believe Flores knew his attacker since there were no signs of forced entry at his residence. A family member had reportedly heard a woman's voice in the background during a phone call with Flores on November 10, the day before the discovery of his body. Flores had sounded surprised by the unexpected guest, leading the family member to suspect that Aguayo had visited him. Aguayo had previously lived with Flores until February 2022. During a police interview, Aguayo claimed to have been working at the Lubbock State School all day and into the night on November 10. However, police records contradicted her statement, showing no record of her presence at work that day, and she failed to provide a valid reason for her absence. Kassandra Aguayo currently remains in detention with a bond set at $500,000. She is scheduled for a court appearance where she will face the charges against her in the coming weeks. Angela Renee Jones, a 35-year-old Minnesota resident, has been sentenced to 25 years in prison following a recent ruling by St. Cloud's Seventh Judicial Court. The sentence comes in response to Jones' admission of guilt in June for a series of serious crimes, as recorded in official court documents. Jones' charges encompass a range of disturbing actions, such as the fatal shooting of her closest friend, involvement in planning another murder, and orchestrating a concerning interaction while incarcerated. The sentencing, which took place on a Friday, was a consequence of Jones pleading guilty to charges of second-degree murder and aiding an offender-accomplice after the fact. The unsettling sequence of events began to unfold on June 2, 2021, when St. Cloud police responded to reports of a possible fatality. The lifeless body of Janesa Leshay Harris, aged 28, was found within the apartment. Harris, a resident of the apartment, had been fatally shot in the mouth. Prosecutors contend that an altercation between Jones and Harris took place due to Harris' expressed wish to sever her ties with Jones. The next day the body of a woman was found with a fatal gunshot wound to her head at a location approximately seven miles from the initial crime scene. The police noted connections between these two murders, raising concerns of a potential correlation. The second victim was identified as 25-year-old Keisa Marie Lange. Through a comprehensive investigation, it was revealed that Jones, along with a female accomplice and two males later identified as DeAntae Davis and Kenneth Carter, were involved in picking up Lange, around 7 a.m. on June 3, 2021, as detailed in a criminal complaint. Subsequent phone conversations intercepted by detectives revealed Jones' role. According to these conversations, Jones claimed to have driven to a remote location where Davis allegedly shot Lange within the vehicle. Afterward, Jones purportedly instructed her accomplices to remove Lange from the car, saying “Get the bitch out of the car,” cops wrote in the complaint. Carter fired his gun at Lange after she was taken out of the car, the complaint said. Following the crime, the individuals took steps to conceal evidence. They reportedly went to a residence where they used bleach to clean the vehicle, disposed of communication devices, and burned their clothing in an apparent attempt to evade detection. Further investigations led to the discovery of the vehicle at Jones' residence the following day, with traces of blood found in the rear seat. As authorities dug deeper, indications arose that Lange might have been targeted due to suspicions of her being an informant for law enforcement. Clues were found in a discarded message referencing a connection with federal authorities. This was supported by a statement made by Jones during a conversation from jail, suggesting that one of the men in the car had "received the message" from an inmate. Despite being incarcerated on unrelated charges of child abuse, Jones was arrested roughly a week after the second murder. Both Carter and Davis were apprehended soon after. Davis was subsequently convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison in June. Carter, however, was acquitted. In an effort to reduce her sentence, Jones admitted to aiding an offender after the crime, leading to a sentence of slightly over 12 years for her role in Lange's death. The narrative took an unexpected turn in December 2021, when a Stearns County grand jury charged Jones with first-degree murder related to Harris' death. During an interview, Jones vehemently denied any involvement in Harris' demise, highlighting their close relationship. The prosecution chose to drop the first-degree murder charge, proposing a 25-year sentence as part of Jones' Alford plea to second-degree murder. Both sentences will run concurrently. A new development arose in March 2023 when investigations uncovered evidence that Jones had offered $300 to a former inmate for engaging in sexual activity with her husband during her incarceration. This involvement in solicitation was revealed through incriminating phone calls and text messages. Jones subsequently pleaded guilty to prostitution, resulting in a sentence of approximately ten years in prison. This sentence will be served concurrently with her previous convictions. Today's modern fascination with true crime is nothing new – our early modern ancestors also devoured sensational stories of brutal deaths and shocking, unexplained crimes. Speaking to Ellie Cawthorne, Blessin Adams delves into several sensational murder cases from between 1500 and 1700 to explore what they can reveal about society at the time. In January of 2016, people started to find body parts wrapped in shopping bags on a stretch of the Grand Canal in Co. Kildare. To gardai, this looked like a gangland hit. But when the remains were identified as 33 year old Kenneth O'Brien, it was quickly determined that he was not known to be involved in anything illegal. Why was Kenneth O'Brien killed?
