The Green Impact Report Quick take: 16-year heat pump water heater evangelist Gregg Holladay reveals how homeowners can slash energy costs by $400+ annually, why May 2029 changes everything for 50% of American homes, and his "proactive replacement" strategy that turns water heater failures into profitable opportunities. Meet Your Fellow Sustainability Champion Gregg Holladay is Business Development Manager for Specialty Markets at Bradford White, where he champions heat pump water heater technology across residential and commercial markets. The industry's only 16-year veteran of heat pump water heaters, Gregg introduced America's first Energy Star-rated unit while at GE in 2009. A sustainability pioneer who built his first energy-efficient home 33 years ago on a Kentucky farm, he's known for translating complex technology into compelling financial stories—like how homeowners can save $400+ annually while achieving 420% efficiency. Gregg teaches contractors nationwide that water heaters are evolving from "failure replacement" to proactive upgrades that actually pay for themselves.

Messing with water heaters sounds like something that professionals who typically deal with hard wiring and electrical work would much rather avoid. However, in today's increasingly connected home, where every system appears to interact and communicate with one another, water heaters are becoming smarter. Here, we chat with Cala Systems Co-Founder and CEO Michael Rigney about the company's forthcoming smart heat pump water heater, how it's changing the game from an efficiency standpoint, and the role he hopes custom integrators can play in getting their product into more consumers' homes, quickly. https://youtu.be/QiPSVg9i3gw

In this short podcast episode, Bryan talks about crankcase heaters, including their different types, what they do, and when we need to use them. Crankcase heaters usually come in belly band varieties, but some can be inserted into the sump of the compressor. As their name suggests, crankcase heaters heat the crankcase when the compressor is off. They prevent flooded starts since the heat keeps refrigerant from condensing to a liquid in the compressor when the system isn't running. Long off times, long line sets, and cold temperatures all increase a system's risk of flooded starts. Hard shutoff TXVs, liquid line solenoid valves, and crankcase heaters are all ways to reduce these risks; the valves hold liquid refrigerant back, and crankcase heaters merely prevent refrigerant from condensing. Crankcase heaters have to be wired to the line side of the contactor or starter. They're often wired around one of the contacts (with a single-pole contactor). When the contact opens, there is a circuit from one leg, through the crankcase heater and compressor windings, to the other leg. This method does NOT use the compressor winding itself as a crankcase heater. When you use a crankcase heater on a compressor with a seam, you want the part of the heater that does the tensioning near the seam. Crankcase heaters should be installed at the base of the compressor, and you'll usually use OEM crankcase heaters. No matter where you live in the world, you heat water through some method. And some countries like Canada are ahead of even the US, much to my surprise. But the real kicker is finding out how wrong I could have been in picking my next one. Welcome to the Just Dumb Enough Podcast. A show that acknowledges no one is always an expert, by dispelling misconceptions with real experts. My guest today is a self proclaimed energy nerd, Larry Weingarten. We all have water heaters in our homes, and yet 99.9% of us probably know little to nothing about ours, despite the fact they can explode! Now that's rare, but it has your attention, huh? Over the interview, Larry will teach us all the things we need to know, which could help your health, energy usage, bank account, and so much more. ( Www.LarryWeingarten.Com ) ( Www.HeatingHelp.Com ) ( https://a.co/d/9YgZNxm will take you to: Www.Amazon.Com "The Philosopher's Wrench: Using Your Creativity, Heart & Tools to Fix the World" ) ( https://a.co/d/a2ouJyD will take you to: Www.Amazon.Com "The Water Heater Workbook: A Hands-On Guide to Water Heaters" ) Let's get cool with hot water. I don't know about all of you, but this has me rethinking a huge amount of what I would put into a dream house; if I could afford to build it. In other news... April is here, and the rankings are all over the place: 1. The United States, with Oregon, New York, and Virginia now at the front. 2. Canada, with Ontario as king. 3. Israel, which is new. 4. South Africa, almost certainly thanks to Irma bashing it last week. 5. Australia, with Queensland just leading Western Australia. That'll probably level out next week, but still pretty cool! That's it for this week! Have a great week, a great weekend, and I'll see you all back here next week for another new episode! Until the next episode, pretty please do all the things to help the show: rate, review, like, and subscribe.
