This week, our cohosts turn the dial to "max bronze", giving a real jolt to this spooky season as they discuss Lisa Frankenstein (2024), directed by Zelda Williams and written by Diablo Cody. Chelsea and Madison love an unnamed creature who doesn't speak, and wish some critics, who condemned the film for stitching together too many genres, had taken note. Starring Kathryn Newton, Cole Sprouse, Liza Soberano, and Carl Gugino, they hypothesize this one's destined to be a cult classic à la Jennifer's Body as new viewers reanimate the love this story deserves.Connect With UsFollow us on Instagram @loveatfirstscreening or send an email to loveatfirstscreening@gmail.comProduction Hosts: Chelsea Ciccone and Madison HillMusic: Good StephArtwork: Chelsea CicconeSocial Media: Marissa CicconeAbout the ShowAn examination of classic tropes and iconic characters pits connoisseur against cynic—one romantic comedy at a time. Black Sabbath are solely responsible for conjuring the diabolical power of heavy metal. When guitarist Tony Iommi lost his fingertips as a teenager, he turned to a less painful style of playing— a style that produced a new, genre-defining type of gloom and heaviness. The band climbed through the seven circles of British podunk hell to international rock star success, but the lore of their dark imagery compelled the freaks to flood out of the woodwork and to their shows. Despite composing songs that warned against the evils of the occult, Black Sabbath attracted legions of devil worshippers, occultists and 1970s freak-flag-flying practitioners of the dark arts. Kids went mad for their metal. Critics hated it. And much to the band's dismay, Satanists found their battle cry in the heavy gloom that Black Sabbath had awakened. This week on Urban Valor, we sat down with Marine veteran Ernesto Menjivar. A man who watched his brother lose both legs to an IED right in front of him. Ernesto was 19 years old when he first hit the ground in Afghanistan, assigned to one of the most IED-infested regions in Helmand Province. The firefights came fast. The first one he was ever in, RPGs were flying over his head, and the next minute they were sweeping for pressure plates in the dirt, praying one of them wouldn't go off.But then it did.His brother, Langston White, stepped on an IED while on patrol, and Ernesto was just feet away. The way he describes that moment — the sound, the dust, the blood, the moment they locked eyes — it'll sit with you. Langston survived but lost both legs. And that was just one chapter of what became a brutal deployment. Ernesto talks about the emotional toll of trying to stay mission-ready after something like that, the Marines he lost during Operation Deuces Wild, and how that experience changed him forever. Now years removed from combat, he opens up about the PTSD, the dreams, the random moments where he sees civilians missing limbs and flashes back to war. But he also shares what's helped him — therapy, music, painting, his faith — and how he's still working through it. This isn't a sanitized version of war. It's the real cost. The kind of story that shows what combat veterans carry with them long after the fighting stops.
