Drawing inspiration from classic old-time radio shows like The Mysterious Traveler and The Whistler, CBSRMT was hosted by E. G. Marshall, who introduced each episode with an inviting yet eerie, "Come in!… Welcome." The series' signature began and ended with the sound of a creaking door and eerie music, a hallmark that echoed Brown's earlier show Inner Sanctum Mysteries. Each episode, about 45 minutes long, mixed genres beyond mystery, including horror, science fiction, historical drama, and even comedy. Popular around Halloween and Christmas, the series would also air special adaptations like A Christmas Carol every year, except for 1974 and 1982. CBSRMT featured original stories as well as adaptations of literary works by famous writers such as Edgar Allan Poe, Charles Dickens, and Arthur Conan Doyle. E. G. Marshall hosted the series until 1982, when actress Tammy Grimes took over for the final season. The show was known for its chilling theme music, which included elements from the Twilight Zone score by Nathan Van Cleave. With over 1,399 original episodes, the show ran five nights a week, with a mix of new content and repeats. Despite its popularity, some critics, like radio historian John Dunning, pointed out weaknesses in its scriptwriting. CBSRMT attracted an impressive roster of talent, from radio veterans like Joan Banks and Jackson Beck to well-known actors such as John Lithgow, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Agnes Moorehead. The series became an entry point for younger listeners into the world of radio drama, as well as a nostalgic callback for those familiar with the Golden Age of Radio. The show was recorded in New York at the CBS Studio Building, and its production process was quick and efficient, with actors often completing their roles in just a few hours. In the early 2000s, CBSRMT saw a revival through NPR, bringing the series to a new generation of listeners. Despite its end in 1982, CBSRMT remains a cherished piece of radio history, known for its suspenseful storytelling and atmospheric production.

Best known today as humanity's last hope in Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Kevin McCarthy lent his voice to a pair of Suspense thrillers in the later years of the program. First, he plays a juror whose wife has been kidnapped to sway his vote in "After the Movies" (AFRS rebroadcast from September 6, 1959). Then, he fights for his life in a sinking ship in "Dead Man's Story" (AFRS rebroadcast from May 15, 1960). Finally, we'll hear him in the dual role of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde in a production of The CBS Radio Mystery Theatre, part of the brief revival of network radio dramas (originally aired on CBS on June 18, 1974).
Oscar Wilde wrote the novella in 1891 from which this play is adapted... The audio introduction lays out the premise of the story and the willingness of Victorian character Dorian Gray to give his soul for allowing a portrait of him to age while he retains his youthfulness. But there is more to a person's life than looks... there is honor and morality... that is not visible and there is dishonor and immorality that is not visible ... but not so in the portrait... it changes as Dorian lives his life, and it is not a good "picture" when all is said and done! This track will live in the Playlist "Horror and Suspense" on this Soundcloud.com podcast.
Two short vignettes and episode from radio program, CBS RADIO MYSTERY THEATRE, "Tell-Tale Heart" starring Fred Gwynne.
This time I invite Conor on the show to dive into this "Post Golden Age" Radio Show! In 1974 long-time radio producer Himen Brown convinced CBS to green-light a new anthology of Radio Dramas, CBS Radio Mystery Theater. Radio Drama had been declared "dead" twelve years before. CBS Radio Mystery Theater was meant to appeal to an audience that remembered when old time radio drama was a popular form of family entertainment. Riding on the wave of nostalgia fever, the radio show attracted many younger listeners who would stay up late, hidden under their covers to hear the program on their bedroom radio (and many of them were not able to go to sleep after listening to the frightening program). --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/richard-templeman/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/richard-templeman/support

Inner Sanctum Mysteries premiered on this day in 1941 over the Blue Network. This show, like the later CBS Radio Mystery Theatre, was produced by Himan Brown. Well known for its creaking door opening, and the humorous voice of Raymond portrayed initially by Raymond Edward Johnson. Brown was quoted as saying to an assistant, "I'm gonna make that door a star." Soundman Terry Ross once told a story that the squeak was obtained by burying hinges in dirt then watering the dirt. After a couple of weeks, the hinges were dug up nice and rusty. No sooner had they set the door up with a great squeak than a setup boy indicated he had oiled the hinges to fix the squeak.
