In honor of International Holocaust Remembrance Day, we are telling the story of Margarethe Hilferding, a pioneering psychoanalyst and physician from Vienna who was murdered in a Nazi concentration camp in 1942. She was the first woman to earn a medical degree at the University of Vienna and the first woman to join Sigmund Freud's Vienna Psychoanalytic Society. In her paper On the Basis of Mother Love, presented to the society in 1911, she argued that the maternal instinct is not innate but can develop after birth, a theory Freud and the rest of her male colleagues rejected. Margarethe soon left the society and devoted much of her life to treating women in working class neighborhoods and advocating for their reproductive health. Her theory of maternal instinct remains controversial even today. Learn about your ad choices: dovetail.prx.org/ad-choices

A lot of the issues that people are subject to facing in their adult lives stem from failures in their childhood environments. And in my clinical experience, these issues are somewhat different depending on whether the failure originated in the father or in the mother. In today's episode, I'll be comparing mother love and father love: how they might be distinct from each other and why both are instrumental to the well-being of the child. Loving your family living alternative lifestyles with therapist Michael Gasparro who specialized in sexual incongruence and same sex attraction. (4:28) What does the Church teach about same sex attraction? What causes it? (23:08) Parenting the soul of a child. (43:10) Resources mentioned : Catechism of the Catholic Church 2357-2359: Chastity and homosexuality 2357 Homosexuality refers to relations between men or between women who experience an exclusive or predominant sexual attraction toward persons of the same sex. It has taken a great variety of forms through the centuries and in different cultures. Its psychological genesis remains largely unexplained. Basing itself on Sacred Scripture, which presents homosexual acts as acts of grave depravity,140 tradition has always declared that "homosexual acts are intrinsically disordered."141 They are contrary to the natural law. They close the sexual act to the gift of life. They do not proceed from a genuine affective and sexual complementarity. Under no circumstances can they be approved. 2358 The number of men and women who have deep-seated homosexual tendencies is not negligible. This inclination, which is objectively disordered, constitutes for most of them a trial. They must be accepted with respect, compassion, and sensitivity. Every sign of unjust discrimination in their regard should be avoided. These persons are called to fulfill God's will in their lives and, if they are Christians, to unite to the sacrifice of the Lord's Cross the difficulties they may encounter from their condition. 2359 Homosexual persons are called to chastity. By the virtues of self-mastery that teach them inner freedom, at times by the support of disinterested friendship, by prayer and sacramental grace, they can and should gradually and resolutely approach Christian perfection. Transcripts available at https://tobydorr.com/podcast-schedule/ “The women of Framingham (Prison) sought a way out and their struggles gave them dignity. I could hear their voices speaking out of the darkness.” - Jean Trounstine, author, activist, professor emerita at Middlesex Community College in Lowell, Massachusetts, and today's guest on Fierce Conversations with Toby Some of our fierce topics today: [02:57] I began working with people in prison and, it changed me, it turned me into a prison activist, and it turned me into a writer. [04:50] If my students tackled Shakespeare, a writer they thought beyond reach, they would also be learning to take on what was most difficult in life. [30:33] My new book is called Mother Love and it's a book of short stories about ten different women whose child killed someone. [38:35] Poetry comes to you when you need to say something that comes so deep from the heart that you can't say it unless you do it in a poem. More about Jean Trounstine and her work: Jean Trounstine I prefer to talk about how I became an activist, working in a prison, writing books to change things. I have written 6 and write currently as well for the Boston Institute for Nonprofit Journalism. Shakespeare Behind Bars I believed that if my students tackled Shakespeare, a writer they thought beyond reach, they would also be learning to take on what was most difficult in life. The women yearned for change and growth. Eventually the program took on a philosophy: art has the power to redeem lives. I came to realize that most women in prison are not dangerous. What characterizes them more than anything else is their heartache. Instead of frightening me they seemed lost, with tragic lives. I knew nothing of the fellowship that exists in prison. Women inmates seek relationships, thrive on it. It is this prison community that sustains women who do time. It is this community that taught me to value the prisoner's lives, to like and respect them, and to understand that they are more than news stories tucked away on a back page in our local papers. While it is true that prison is a repressive environment, the one who offers hope in the classroom has the potential to effect change. The women of Framingham sought a way out, and their struggles gave them dignity. I could hear their voices… speaking out of the darkness. Boy With a Knife The United States was a county that set controversial boundaries where childhood ended and adulthood began in terms of criminal responsibility. Until 2005, the US was the only nation that still sanctioned the death penalty for youth. These boys and girls, barely having earned their driver's license, too young to vote, too young to legally buy alcohol or cigarettes, are locked away with adult men and women. This in spite of the fact that 90 percent of juveniles, even those convicted of murder, grow out of criminal behavior as they age. Putting young people in state prisons essentially silences them. Sending juveniles to adult prisons doesn't make us safer. The international standard for incarceration of juveniles for the most serious crimes is ten or fifteen years prior to parole eligibility. It's a cage match in a used car graveyard, with soul hunter Cyrus Kriticos taking on soul preserver Kalina Oretzia. Lost amidst the metal is The Breaker, a murderous ghost Cyrus wishes to add to his collection. Assisting Cyrus is Dennis, a medium whose ability to sense ghosts sends him into spasms of pain. Kalina's only wish is to set souls free and let them roam the earth. Cyrus succeeds in capturing Breaker, but loses his life in the process. We cut to the home of Cyrus's nephew, math teacher Arthur Kriticos, his two children Bobby and Kathy, and their nanny, the sassy Maggie. They've got a visitor today, a lawyer, Ben Moss, representing Cyrus's estate. The news: Cyrus is bequeathing his house to Arthur, who's spent the last few months mourning the death of his wife in a fire. The house, it turns out, is a modern masterpiece of architecture, a glass structure with Latin etched on the walls, and walls that slide back and forth like a living organism. Arthur's flattered, but… he can't pay for this. He barely gets by as it is. But Ben assures him, Cyrus has everything figured out. All Arthur and the kids need to do is move in and get settled. But once they start looking around, the Kriticos family realizes they're being watched, and the inhabitants of the basement are none too happy to be under new management. Welcome to the episode 15 of "Women In The Music Industry", a podcast that shines a spotlight on the remarkable women who are breaking barriers and making their mark in an industry that has long been dominated by men. Today's episode features the incredibly powerful, award winning, indigenous singer-songwriter iskwē (short for waseskwan iskwew, meaning "blue sky woman"). iskwē is more than just an artist, she is a teller of stories that have impacted our past and will inform our future. iskwē's music allows her creativity to soar as she explores a range of ambient sound effects and beats. Her spine-tingling vocals anchor the myriad of sounds, blurring the lines between sources and styles, as well as between the actual, ideal, real, and imagined. Transporting listeners into a world of electronic rhythms and Indigenous sounds as she draws upon her Cree Métis roots, iskwē's genre-bending catalog includes three full-length albums that span a spectrum of emotions and is powered by resilience. Our finite minds can't fully grasp all that God is, so the Bible gives us human terms we can understand such as love, light, and Father. But does He also have a motherly nature?

There's a reason we chose Brooke to be our Mother Love producer. We knew she would get it. We knew she would listen back to each episode carefully and considerately. We knew she was skilled and enthusiastic about the work. But what I didn't know until I sat down with her to plan and record an episode with her, is that she has been through some really rough times as a mom, especially in the first years of her kiddos' lives. In this episode, Brooke and I begin with current (and hilarious) banter about what parenting looks like for us today- think toothpaste crusted sinks and back to back tummy bugs that wreak havoc on our lives, before moving into more serious territory. In the second half of the episode Brooke reflects on her difficult pregnancy, birthing experience, work discrimination, health and relationship challenges, breastfeeding battles and mood disregulation. Mostly, we talk about how asking for help saved our lives and what that looked like (and continues to look like) for each of us.Show notes:Postpartum Support International Helpline:Call 1-800-944-4773 (4PPD)#1 En Español or #2 EnglishText in English: 800-944-4773Text en Español: 971-203-7773National Suicide & Crisis Lifeline: Call 988 or text MT to 741-741Montana Warm Line: Call 877-688-3377 LIFTS Online Resource Guide:Search "Mental Health Providers" in your areaHelp for those helping moms:PRISM for Moms Psychiatric Consultation LineCall: 1-833-837-7476 or submit an e-consult formFor statewide resources please visit the Linking Infants and Families to Supports athttps://hmhb-lifts.org/

— What is love? To give, and never to ask. What leads to this love? Grace. What leads to this grace? Grace is not cheaply bought. It is gained by being always ready to serve, and reluctant to be served. There are many points which lead to this grace: Wishing well for others at the cost of one's self. Never backbiting. Tolerance supreme. Trying not to worry. Trying not to worry is almost impossible - so try. Thinking more of the good points in others, and less of their bad points. What leads to this grace? Doing all the above. If you do one of these things perfectly, the rest must follow. Then grace descends. Have love - and when you have love, the union with the beloved is certain. ~~~ Meher Baba Valeria interviews Maria O'hia — She believes in trust and faith. She trusts that everything happens for a reason and her faith is that all is well and always will be. It was in college when she adopted this mindset that her life took the direction that led her to where she is now. Away from med school, family, security and safety. At a young age she accepted an arranged marriage, becoming a stepmom to a 12 year old autistic boy. It was only after her first son was born that her life took form and became stable. Maria was fortunate to work with a psychic who told her that she could see in her visions, standing right behind Maria, a long line of people, of tribes, who were hurting and in pain. Maria comes from the Zoroastrian faith, one of the oldest religions in the world. Zoroastrians were discriminated against even to this day. But the history of torture and murder goes back thousands of years. Forced to either revert to the Muslim faith or be slaughtered if reluctant, the Zoroastrians were executed for their simple belief system of good thoughts, good words, and good deeds. Maria had unknowingly been carrying this ancestral trauma all her life. This and her life circumstances led her on the path of healing. She delved into the world of yoga, shamanism, flower essences, reiki, Louise Hay, Ho'oponopono, and Meher Baba. Maria was coined ‘Mother Love' by a saintly hero of India, carrying with him an unending love from beyond, which sparked Maria's inner journey. Maria feels certain, there is a higher purpose to her calling, and every climb, and every peak has been a wonderful awakening. She envisions love that can be seen and then spread throughout the world. Love for oneself. Love for family. Love for all that is divine. Contact Maria at drew@sggmedia.us, or call at (646) 889-1259. The inspiration is Love. The aspiration is to awaken new ways of thinking that can lead us to a new way of being, being well.
Christy Wopat's award-winning memoir, Almost a Mother: Love, Loss, and Finding Your People When Your Baby Dies, was published by Orange Hat Publishing in 2018. A 4th-grade teacher, busy mama, and wife, Christy has always relied on writing as a way to cope. Recently she decided to use that strength as a way to help others, so they don't have to feel alone, especially in grief. Always Ours, an illustrated picture book about remembering our loved ones, was released in May of 2020 by Orange Hat. Her forthcoming book, After All, will be released in May of 2022. Christy also writes middle-grade books and is a member of SCBWI. She also chairs the Events Committee for the Wisconsin Writers Association. She lives with her husband and kids in Holmen, Wisconsin. Time: the present. Location: Danvers, Massachusetts. Given the opportunity to clear asbestos from the long-dormant Danvers State Hospital, a sprawling asylum for the insane, abatement specialist Gordon jumps at the chance, claiming in his bid that he and his crew can do the job in one short week. Gordon brings on four guys: the dependable yet hot-headed Phil, would-be lawyer Mike, self-styled ladies man Hank, and Gordon's nephew Jeff, who suffers from nyctophobia. Things seem to be moving along, but when Mike discovers the reel to reel tapes of a former patient named Mary Hobbes and becomes fascinated by her story, a larger tale begins to play out – one that shows startling parallels to the lives of the men shucking fiber in the hospital today. Today I share about the soulful, biological, and divine role of mother in our embodiment. In many cultures within the old paradigm. becoming a mother was seen as an obstacle to becoming awakened. This reflects a profound separation between human life and the divine. In actuality, motherhood offers the opportunity to merge both. As this capacity is built into our physiology and our shakti. We will deeply explore how this innate nurturing intelligence is held in both our bodies and our sharing of ourselves with others. This is a powerful transmission that can inspire both men and women. This week, we are back to podcasting after Natalie's maternity leave! She shares her birth story with us, and what she has learned in her process as a mother so far. We expand the conversation to what it is to "mother" in the creative sense, and how birthing something new in the world takes a deep inner listening. We discuss the obstacles that arise as we bring anything to life. We also talk about loving and trusting the creation as we learn how to love and trust ourselves.
In today's episode, we explore Ronit Plank's coming of age memoir in which she chronicles her evolving relationship with her mother, who left the family and moved to India to follow Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh, a cult guru who later oversaw the largest biological attack on U.S. soil. In this episode, we talk about complex family dynamics as well as the quest for self-identity, understanding, and reconciliation that's integral to the human experience.Learn more at www.ronitplank.com. Hello Dear One ... Every May I love to re-listen to and re-share this episode on MOTHER LOVE which I recorded in 2017, and the wisdom still stands... and the message still so needed for us all to hear, contemplate and put into practical action. I've updated the start and end with a special reading and practice this year. What is Mother Love? Mother Love is so much more than we think it is.) So many of us are feeling stretched - being called to make changes, expansions, trust. In times like you need more "mother love" - it's so powerful! MOTHER LOVE does not just come from your birth mother. And since most of us aren't taught what that is or how to source it, I am replaying this Feminine Power Time. If you've never heard it, tune in. If you have, re-listen this is medicine and a message that will bring clarity, confidence and courage to you at this time.... "THERE IS A GREAT MOTHER LOVE AVAILABLE THAT CAN ACT AS THE SAFE AND SOFT HARBOR YOU NEED TO STAND STRONG + FEEL SUPPORTED. IT WILL HOLD YOU, SOOTHE YOU, AND GIVE YOU UNSTOPPABLE COURAGE." When you read the words ‘mother love' you likely go right to thinking about the mother who gave birth to you or the mother who raised you. And while that mother definitely has a role to play in our lives, she cannot be our only source of “mother love.” Mother love is... a specific kind of love that every human being needs – we don't outgrow the need for it, although we sadly forget how much we do need it. Mother love is… the deep, all-embracing, all-accepting, nourishing, nurturing, warm, safe, supportive love that soothes the places inside our hearts that feel scared and lonely. Mother love is… the strong love that we can fall into when we are stressed, stretched, uncertain, and feeling like we just can't handle what's happening in our life. Sourcing Mother Love is not something most of us were taught how to do. In this Feminine Power Time with Christine Arylo: Mother Love: The Feminine Love That Will Hold You Through Transition: Reveal why one mother cannot be our only source of love – and how embracing this can wipe out all kinds of baggage and free you to receive the support, nurturing, courage, acceptance, patience, understanding and compassion Define Mother Love – this is SO much more than the story or situation between you and your birth mother. Even if you had the greatest mother growing up, your need for more Mother Love doesn't end. See how the lack of Mother Love is often at the root of things like loneliness, feeling like you don't belong, fear, not feeling like you have enough, are enough, not being cared for, not feeling supported – these patterns will keep showing up if you don't get to the root Explore the powerful 3 Sources of Mother Love that are here for all of us - there is SO much of this support here for us beyond what we have been taught exists. Learn simple practices you can do to invite this powerful, potent, feminine love into your heart and life – including the Great Mother Bath P.S. In this episode of Mother Love, Krysti Walker and Sabrina Navarro share their experience of starting a family via in vitro fertilization with the help of their dear friends Sarah and Tyler Gregson. In episode 14, we got to hear from Sarah and Tyler about what this experience was like for them. Now, we have the chance to talk with the moms little Elliot and how their unique but very natural experience of conception, pregnancy and birth has been a huge gift in their lives and the lives of their family members. Their son Elliot, now four, brings so much light and love along with him. He's quick to tell everyone he loves them. To Elliot, saying “I love you” is just as common and natural as saying “hello” or “goodbye”. As Krysti describes him she says, laughing, “Elliot thinks everyone is his best friend.” He lives with his heart wide open thanks to all those who've steeped him in love from the very beginning.Connect with Healthy Mothers, Healthy BabiesWebsiteFacebookInstagram Need Help Now?
