This week, Alan, Quinta and Scott were joined by Allies host and Lawfare associate editor Bryce Klehm! Together they talked through the week's big national security news stories, including: "Remember the ‘90s?” Nine months have passed since the Taliban seized power in Kabul, and its promises of a more moderate rule than the harsh theocracy it oversaw in the 1990s are increasingly ringing hollow. Just this past week, the Taliban issued a new edict directing women and girls to cover everything but their eyes while in public and discouraging them from leaving their homes. Is there any chance of the Taliban changing tack? And how should the United States and others engage with them? “A Shooting in Buffalo.” An 18-year-old shooter who targeted and killed black shoppers at a supermarket this past week appears to have been radicalized online by a version of “replacement theory,” which has been echoed in rhetoric by mainstream right-wing political figures ranging from Tucker Carlson to Elise Stefanik. How should platforms and policymakers combat such radicalization to prevent more violence?“It's Coming from Inside the House.” The Jan. 6 committee took a dramatic step earlier this week when it issued subpoenas to five House Republicans who had refused to voluntarily participate with its investigation, including minority leader Kevin McCarthy. Why did the committee take this step now? And what are the odds it will lead these members to cooperate? For object lessons, Alan endorsed Emily St. John Mandel's newest piece of sci-fi literature, "Sea of Tranquility." Quinta celebrated the miraculous recovery of her house plant. Scott encouraged listeners to check out an overlooked and underappreciated chapter in the Muppets' oeuvre, the 2015 adult sitcom "The Muppets." And Bryce recommended an old television show folks might not have heard of called "The Sopranos" for some insight into mafia-style management. And everyone encouraged listeners to check out the newest podcast series from Lawfare and Goat Rodeo, Allies, which does a deep dive into how the decade-long failure of the Afghan Special Immigrant Visa (SIV) program led the United States to leave so many allies behind following its withdrawal from Afghanistan. Nonprofit Watchdog Uncovers $350 Million in Secret Payments to Fauci, Collins, Others at NIH An estimated $350 million in undisclosed royalties were paid to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and hundreds of its scientists, including the agency's recently departed director, Dr. Francis Collins, and Dr. Anthony Fauci, according to a nonprofit government watchdog. “We estimate that up to $350 million in royalties from third parties were paid to NIH scientists during the fiscal years between 2010 and 2020,” Open the Books CEO Adam Andrzejewski told reporters in a telephone news conference on May 9. “We draw that conclusion because, in the first five years, there has been $134 million that we have been able to quantify of top-line numbers that flowed from third-party payers, meaning pharmaceutical companies or other payers, to NIH scientists.” The first five years, from 2010 to 2014, constitute 40 percent of the total, he said. “We now know that there are 1,675 scientists that received payments during that period, at least one payment. In fiscal year 2014, for instance, $36 million was paid out and that is on average $21,100 per scientist,” Andrzejewski said. “We also find that during this period, leadership at NIH was involved in receiving third-party payments. For instance, Francis Collins, the immediate past director of NIH, received 14 payments. Dr. Anthony Fauci received 23 payments and his deputy, Clifford Lane, received eight payments.” See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

That is why the world hates you. 20 Remember what I told you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.'[b] If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also. If they obeyed my teaching, they will obey yours also. 21 They will treat you this way because of my name, for they do not know the one who sent me. 22 If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not be guilty of sin; but now they have no excuse for their sin. 23 Whoever hates me hates my Father as well. 24 If I had not done among them the works no one else did, they would not be guilty of sin. As it is, they have seen, and yet they have hated both me and my Father. 25 But this is to fulfill what is written in their Law: ‘They hated me without reason.'[c] The Work of the Holy Spirit 26 “When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father—the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father—he will testify about me. 27 And you also must testify, for you have been with me from the beginning. THE THESIS: When one of the most infamous, leftist academics sees that Trump represents threat to the ruling class, it's becoming ever more clear it is Us Vs. The Party.  THE SCRIPTURE & SCRIPTURAL RESOURCES:  Jeremiah 5:26-31 26 “Among my people are the wicked     who lie in wait like men who snare birds     and like those who set traps to catch people. 27 Like cages full of birds,     their houses are full of deceit; they have become rich and powerful 28     and have grown fat and sleek. Their evil deeds have no limit;     they do not seek justice. They do not promote the case of the fatherless;     they do not defend the just cause of the poor. 29 Should I not punish them for this?”     declares the Lord. “Should I not avenge myself     on such a nation as this?   30 “A horrible and shocking thing     has happened in the land: 31 The prophets prophesy lies,     the priests rule by their own authority, and my people love it this way.     But what will you do in the end? THE NEWS & COMMENT: [AUDIO] - Joe Biden just called President Trump “a horrible plague.” -- Reminder: Biden ran on uniting the country. [AUDIO] - Noam Chomsky, in an interview this week, says "fortunately" there is "one Western statesman of stature" who is pushing for a diplomatic solution to the war in Ukraine rather than looking for ways to fuel and prolong it. "His name is Donald J. Trump," Chomsky says [AUDIO] - Biden official Samantha Powell discusses the massive shortage of fertilizer. Her take: starving your family will be worth it cuz... climate change. [AUDIO] -  Bill Gates - Calling for a full time Pandemic Team of 3000 people at the cost of $1 Billion per year to stop future outbreaks! [AUDIO] - Conservative MP Dane Lloyd grills the Canadian Anti-Hate Network over false claims that a photo of an anti-Semitic flyer was taken at the Freedom Convoy protest. [AUDIO] -  Mayorkas won't name 1 domestic terror, White supremacy case referred to DOJ . . . “Rep. Greg Steube, R-Fla., pressed Mayorkas for data on any referrals he has made to the DOJ on the grounds of domestic terrorism. Mayorkas did not offer the data, saying he would provide it after the hearing.” See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

THE THESIS: The coming red wave in the elections has nothing to do with the RNC or professional Republicans, it will happen despite them. Plus: the Figuread thinks inflation is hilarious; MSNBC find domestic terrorist mothers in yoga calsses; “Republican” AGs race to surrender to leftists.  https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1WYRf9z2x9OrFo8RNlzyUh3JM8pvYnYm- THE SCRIPTURE & SCRIPTURAL RESOURCES:  Exodus 20:2-4 2 I am the Lord thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. 3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me. 4 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. Matthew 17:14-20: Jesus Heals a Demon-Possessed Boy 14 When they came to the crowd, a man approached Jesus and knelt before him. 15 “Lord, have mercy on my son,” he said. “He has seizures and is suffering greatly. He often falls into the fire or into the water. 16 I brought him to your disciples, but they could not heal him.” 17 “You unbelieving and perverse generation,” Jesus replied, “how long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring the boy here to me.” 18 Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of the boy, and he was healed at that moment. 19 Then the disciples came to Jesus in private and asked, “Why couldn't we drive it out?” 20 He replied, “Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,' and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.” [21] [a] THE NEWS & COMMENT: [AUDIO] -  Jenn Psaki did some acting for the White House spit-swapping with the media event [AUDIO] -  The figurehead thinks radically increasing costs and inflation is hilarious ‘Ship Drifting Further From Shore': AG Association Fails to Quell Concerns Over Left-Wing Partisanship The Free Beacon reported that Republican AGs are ready to flee the organization . . . GOP critics say the organization has become a legal "deep state" that allows liberal career staff in red-state AG offices to coordinate multi-state actions with limited interference from their Republican bosses. And they fear the settlement funds that NAAG administers have devolved into left-wing litigation slush funds. Nebraska attorney general Doug Peterson (R.) will take over as NAAG's new executive director when he leaves office later this year, according to two sources with knowledge of NAAG's plans. The Peterson hiring has not been previously reported . . . Peterson is expected to be little more than a caretaker. He's in the twilight of his career, and he will be joined by a deputy who will likely take over in the medium term—Vermont attorney general T.J. Donovan, a Democrat. Peterson is popular and respected in the AG community, but his more conservative brethren worry he'll be a stooge for NAAG's liberal staff. And with Peterson's deep experience as a trial lawyer, conservatives fear he'll keep NAAG's hands in the public pocket. The organization has landed tens of millions of dollars from nationwide settlements involving car emissions and the opioid crisis, incensing Republicans who say that money belongs to victims of wrongdoing. "Doug is remarkably well liked personally," said a second senior official in a Republican AG office. "But no one seriously considers Doug to be a conservative firebrand who could reform a left-leaning organization, especially as he enters the beginning of his retirement." The former official characterized Peterson's hiring as "kabuki theater" and noted he has a natural successor in Donovan, a "young, mid-career liberal." [AUDIO] - Matt Gaetz: “While I was protecting President Trump from impeachment, Kevin McCarthy and Steve Scalise were protecting Liz Cheney from criticism. This notion that you can have these sniveling calls and try to foment action against Republicans by Big Tech and DOJ is not fitting of leadership.” [AUDIO] - Let's see any professional Republican nail the politically targeted, useless, deadly Covid lockdowns like this young man! [AUDIO] - Here's how the psychopath, Bill Gates handled his role in destroying people with masking, lockdowns and mRNA [AUDIO] -  Psaki on DHS "Ministry of Truth" director: "She's an expert on online disinformation ... this is a person with extensive qualifications." AND, she's a wanna-be yoga teacher! … which MSNBC says is where right-wing extremists recruit moms to become domestic terrorists  MSNBC: How right-wing extremists weaponize the idea of motherhood; Women play a more significant role in far-right extremist movements than is often acknowledged A new report on the Jan. 6 U.S. Capitol attack published this month by researchers at George Washington University detailed the role that women have played in American far-right extremism over the past century, including how many are leaning heavily into their identities as mothers to justify their engagement and to recruit and mobilize others.  Themes about the need to protect children are especially powerful in drawing women into extreme and even violent action, as illustrated by the rise of conspiracy theories and propaganda that mobilize mothers around themes of child exploitation and protection. Some women have been drawn into QAnon through relatively banal entry points like wellness blogs and yoga studios, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic. In these spaces, healthy skepticism of traditional medicine and a propensity for alternative models of wellness can create inadvertent gateways to entire rabbit holes of conspiracy theories and disinformation, much of which calls on women to protect children.   See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
