Welcome back to the archive. In this special dual transmission, we turn our forensic radar toward a tiny, sun-bleached rock sitting in the literal centre of the Mediterranean Sea: the island of Malta.Built entirely out of soft, honey-coloured Globigerina limestone, Malta's hyper-dense historic cities are marvels of defensive architecture. In a space so profoundly compressed, where secrets are supposed to be impossible to keep, two completely different killers attempted to use the physical environment to construct the perfect cryptographic mystery. This week, we open two distinct historical drawers to execute a parallel forensic audit, proving that no matter how deep the water or how thick the limestone walls, the material signature of a crime can never be completely erased from the ledger. The Case Files Act I: The Marsamxett Harbor Torso Murder (1955) We descend into the post-WWII soot, coal grime, and severe economic desperation of the Valletta dockyards. When local fishermen haul up waterlogged burlap sacks from the silent depths of Marsamxett Harbour, they discover the cleanly dismembered torso of a missing dockyard clerk. The head and hands are entirely missing—a calculated tactical void designed to strip the victim of his biological identity. We trace the parallel micro-grooves of an industrial bone saw, a rare maritime double-hitch knot, and a single, crumpled scrap of local newspaper caught in a printing-press registration error that collapsed the dragnet directly onto a brutal domestic conspiracy.WHO was killed, and WHO killed them?? Act II: The Strait Street Locked-Room Inquest (1843) We slide the chronological grid back more than a century, climbing the steep stone steps into the dark, elite world of faded aristocracy along the infamous, vice-ridden corridor of Strada Stretta. A wealthy noblewoman is found smothered in her grand four-poster bed. The room is an airtight box: windows barred from within, the heavy oak door locked from the inside, and the key still resting firmly in the interior cylinder. Across the room, her private safe sits completely gutted. This wasn't a supernatural evasion—it was a masterful, low-fidelity mechanical deception. We dissect the material relics that unravelled the plot: an English gold pocket watch intentionally fractured to freeze the time at 3:14 AM, microscopic traces of white beeswax left deep inside a lock, and a simple silk thread trick that shattered an ironclad alibi.How....on earth did the key to the lock....remain stuck on the inside of the door opposed to the outside? In This Episode, We Explore: How hyper-compressed living spaces dictate the logistics of criminal concealment. The mechanical signatures left by industrial tools on bone structure. The physics of the classic "silk thread" locked-room exploit. How microscopic anomalies in everyday objects—from ink alignment to fractured brass gears—become permanent investigative anchors. Thank you so much for your support as always legend and have a FANTASTIC week ahead mates!!!
Send us Fan MailA giallo in May? As far as I'm concerned, any day is a good day for a giallo. And when the title of your giallo is twelve words, I know that you're taking the subgenre seriously. Edwige Fenech joins Luigi Pistilli and Anita Strindberg for a sexed up death romp in Sergio Martino's Your Vice Is a Locked Room and Only I Have the Key (1972)!

When a geologist proved that human grief and human joy were being siphoned to the stars as fuel for somebody else's machine, the world spun into cults and suicides and small wars — but the professor had a wooden crate, a Cumberland cottage full of secrets, and a private answer he wasn't ready to share with the man writing the checks. | #RetroRadio EP0640Look for this podcast on YouTube Music, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, iHeart Radio, Amazon Music, Pandora, TuneIn Radio, and numerous other podcast apps. What if doubt isn’t the opposite of faith — it’s the doorway to it? This week’s sermon takes a fresh look at Doubting Thomas, and asks a harder question: not why Thomas doubted, but where he was when everyone else was hiding. From mass incarceration to immigration fear, from social media echo chambers to the rooms we personally refuse to enter, we’re challenged to stop “doing research” and start doing a real search — one that puts us face to face with people whose scars we’d rather not see. Because if you’re 41 years old and you’re not covered in scars, maybe you haven’t been loving people hard enough. Come find out what it means to go make some more.

Hannah finally gets a break from Hastings… because he's not in this one. And honestly? Any book without Hastings starts at a 4-star baseline.Episode 148: Death in the Clouds by Agatha ChristieIt's always a good day when we get a Poirot mystery and a Hastings-free flight. Sam and Hannah dive into one of Christie's most delightfully absurd premises: murder above the clouds, suspicious passengers, and a wasp that definitely didn't do it.We talk about Christie's knack for misdirection, our running the Anti-Hastings Club lore, and why stories set in confined spaces (planes, trains, creepy mansions) just hit different. We talk about Gemma's fascinating path from children's book illustrator to crime writer, why she made the switch, and how a personal 40-before-40 challenge helped her finally write her first novel. We also dig into the benefits of writing retreats, plotting versus pantsing, and the pressures of following up your first book—especially when you're already deep into book four!✏️ In This Episode:– The inspiration behind The Storm and its remote, cut-off setting – Why writing crime fiction was a natural step after illustrating picture books – Gemma's structured-but-flexible plotting process and how she lets her characters lead – How visual thinking and cover design influence her approach to books – The reality of professional edits and what “show don't tell” really means – How mini-plotting sessions and character work can keep your writing on track – Why the second book can feel tougher than the first—even without external pressure – Using feedback from trusted beta readers and writer friends to level up

Thirty-plus years in the making, the graphic adaptation of Paul Auster's THE NEW YORK TRILOGY (Pantheon) is here at last! Paul Karasik rejoins the show from Yaddo Artists Retreat to talk about the process of adapting Auster's postmodern crime novels into comics, how he collaborated with David Mazzucchelli (CITY OF GLASS) and Lorenzo Mattotti (GHOSTS) on the first two and how he wound up drawing the third book, THE LOCKED ROOM, how these novels possessed him for decades, and the moment when he understood what each novel was really about. We get into how he met Auster at a parent-teacher conference shortly after the New York Trilogy came out, the moment of truth when Auster first saw the pages for City of Glass, the freedom (and restriction) Auster offered for the project, and whether Auster got to see the finished pages before his death in 2024. We also discuss Paul's comics upbringing, how his mother supported his habit (and maybe melted her son's brain by getting him a book of R. Crumb comics at 12 or 13), his lack of confidence in his drawing and his supreme confidence in his teaching, how meeting Art Spiegelman changed his life, why he's starting an online graphic novel workshop, the immense inspiration of staying at Yaddo (and how he learned The Two Rules Of Yaddo), and a lot more. On this episode, we dig into a chilling tale of an abandoned building, a mysterious death, and a candle that seemingly lights itself. The story takes us deep into a former graveyard where strange events have left a trail of fear and unanswered questions. With every step, the eerie atmosphere tightens, leading to a confrontation with something far beyond human understanding. Join us as we explore the unanswered questions of a haunting that has persisted for over twenty years. Who—or what—was behind the flickering candle? Could it be a lingering spirit, or is something darker at work?

Some mysteries seem impossible, but few actually are. But with no logical explanation to be found, could you solve the unsolvable? Is there even such a thing? Today we look at two impossible cases. First, a man is found shot to death with three bullet wounds in his body, alone, with no gun, inside a locked and bolted room. What happened? Any guesses? How about this one: a woman boards a completely empty train car very much alive. Less than a minute later the still-empty train car pulls into the next station. Somehow she has been stabbed in the back, still alone in the car and now very much dead. Who done it? Your guess is as good as ours.
