This week we're diving into a cult classic — Escape from the Planet of the Apes — and it's all thanks to our great Patreon supporter, Leigh! Leigh's not just a top supporter; he also runs a fantastic YouTube channel called Movie Vent where he shares his love for all things cinema with Ventriloquist dummy, Ned. Check it out at youtube.com/@ventmovies.Escape from the Planet of the Apes (1971) marked a clever shift in the Planet of the Apes franchise, driven by budget constraints and the desire to keep the series alive after the apocalyptic ending of the previous film. Director Don Taylor stepped in to helm the project, which reversed the formula by bringing the apes into the contemporary human world instead of humans stumbling into the apes' future. The screenplay, written by Paul Dehn, embraced elements of satire and social commentary, while working within a significantly smaller budget than its predecessors. To keep costs down, much of the action was set in familiar, modern-day Los Angeles locations, and only a few characters required full prosthetic makeup compared to the previous films' elaborate ape societies. The production leaned heavily on the strong performances of Roddy McDowall and Kim Hunter, reprising their roles as Cornelius and Zira, to carry the emotional weight of the story. Special effects were kept minimal, but John Chambers' iconic makeup design for the apes remained a standout. The studio saw Escape as a gamble, pivoting the franchise from large-scale spectacle to a more character-driven drama with underlying themes of fear, prejudice, and destiny. Despite initial doubts, the movie was a financial success and breathed new life into the series, paving the way for even more sequels down the line.If you enjoy the show we have a Patreon, so become a supporter.www.patreon.com/thevhsstrikesbackTrailer Guy Plot SummaryIn a world where the future is doomed, three apes take one last chance... and crash-land straight into 1970s America! Hailed as celebrities but hunted as threats, Cornelius, Zira, and Dr. Milo must navigate a society that's as fascinated by them as it is terrified of what they represent. Time is running out, danger is closing in, and the fate of two species hangs in the balance... in Escape from the Planet of the Apes!thevhsstrikesback@gmail.comhttps://linktr.ee/vhsstrikesback

Today, Matt & Todd get into the third entry in the classic Planet of the Apes franchise: Escape from the Planet of the Apes.Directed by: Don Taylor Starring: Roddy McDowall, Kim Hunter, Natalie Trundy (Returning cast members.) as well asBradford Dillman, and Eric Braeden. The original Planet of the Apes delivered a gripping, self-contained story. The sequel expanded the lore—and then promptly obliterated the planet. So, how exactly do we get a third film out of this?Money, obviously. But while financial motives are inevitable, what Escape delivers is far more than just a cash grab. The film flips the narrative, bringing the story to Earth. What unfolds isn't a grand adventure as such but rather a tense exploration of fear, power, and survival—culminating in perhaps the franchise's most haunting conclusion yet.And yes, there are still two more of these…Matt reviews and ranks more movies including newer ones at LetterboxdYou can find out what he's following on Bluesky @MovieMattSirois.bsky.socialCheck out favorites of what we follow, at: Once Upon a Geek and  The Fade Out Podcast As Marcus he reviews all sorts of films but unlike here, they often they range from bad, worse, or terrible at the MovieAsylum of the Weird, Bad and Wonderful.

Today, Matt & Todd are joined again by Mike, who is here to discuss the 1970 sci-fi classic Beneath the Planet of the Apes. This is of course the sequel to Planet, which we discussed a few episodes ago, and it happens to be the favorite of the five films for Matt and Mike.*Directed by Ted PostStarring: James Fransiscus, James Gregory as Ursus and a returning cast including Kim Hunter, Maurice Evans, Charlton Heston, and Linda HarrisonIf this is your first foray into the franchise —like Todd— you might be wondering how they could possibly make a sequel.Planet of the Apes felt like a complete, self-contained film, wrapping its sci-fi themes in a desperate message about humanity's past and future with an emphatic final statement. So, where do you go from here?Like many sequels, this one initially feels like one of those 'same-name' movies that might be a remake. But no—it's actually a direct continuation. The film follows a familiar path until we finally descend beneath the planet (though technically, inside the planet, but that wouldn't make for as great a title). Here, it takes on its own identity and leaves its own lasting impression.Putting comparisons aside, Beneath the Planet of the Apes expands on the planet's lore and another look at the 'Ape' caste system. Further we get strong performances, welcome cast returns, and still impressive costume work that still holds up under the scrutiny of high definition more than 50 years later, despite a lower budget. For those who haven't seen the movie, we'll let YOU decide if the end of BENEATH THE PLANET OF THE APES is sequel-baiting or not.Check this one out especially if you were looking for a bit more 'bang' in your Sci-Fi compared to the last film.Matt reviews and ranks more movies including newer ones at LetterboxdYou can find out what he's following on Bluesky @MovieMattSiroisCheck out favorites of what we follow, at: Once Upon a Geek and  The Fade Out PodcastAs Marcus he reviews all sorts of films but unlike here, they often they range from bad, worse, or terrible at the MovieAsylum of the Weird, Bad and Wonderful.

Today Matt & Todd discuss the 1968 Sci-Fi Classic: Planet of the Apes, directed by Franklin J Schaffner, based on a novel by Pierre Boulle.Starring: Charlton Heston, Roddy McDowall, Maurice Evans and Kim Hunter.Screenplay co-credited to Michael Wilson and Rod Serling.A groundbreaking success when it first appeared in 1968; Planet of the Apes is a rapid-paced fish-out-of-water tale of a group of astronauts who crash-land on a mysterious planet inhabited by a civilization of advanced apes determined to destroy humanity. The original Planet of the Apes feels more at home in the realm of Star Trek and Twilight Zone (also created by original Planet of the Apes screenwriter: Rod Serling.)Even if you have not seen the film you're likely aware of the ending, and some of the more memorable lines. This is a film that still holds up as pure entertainment, award-wining makeup effects that still look remarkable, and an engaging plot that offers something enduring to consider about human nature. If this is your first time watching, we'd love to hear what you think. If you like this film we can recommend:The Omega Man, Last Man on Earth, World Without End, The Terminator, The Time Travelers*, Star Trek (in particular the classic series) and The Twilight Zone.----------Follow Matt on Letterboxd, Bluesky: @MovieMattSirois, as Marcus at Movie Asylum of the Weird, Bad and Wonderful and follow what we follow at Once Upon a Geek and  The Fade Out Podcast

EPISODE 61 - “FAVORITE CLASSIC FILMS OF THE 1960s” - 11/11/2024 The decade of the 1960s was an exciting time in filmmaking. The stodgy studio contract system was starting to give way to a new crop of independent cinematic auteurs, often associated with the "New Hollywood" era, include: Stanley Kubrick, Robert Altman, Sam Peckinpah, Arthur Penn, John Cassavetes, Francis Ford Coppola, Martin Scorsese, and Peter Bogdanovich. These films were edgier and pushed the creative boundaries and social themes to reflect the changing times. Every February, around this time, approximately 8 billion small heart-shaped candies are created and exchanged.  These candies bear messages of love and care, and are often used as gifts to express feelings for another person.   In each episode featuring a guest, we ask them if there are any words of wisdom they might share with their younger selves. These words of wisdom are like those Sweetheart treats, but instead of representing love for someone else, they are messages of love directed to our guests themselves, and by extension, to all of us.  We are so inspired by the wisdom our guests shared, so we put all these beautiful words together, as a little love treat for our listeners.  Enjoy!   Thank you to our amazing guests for their words of wisdom: Donna Peek, Darren Gold, Leslie McGuirk, Mike Robbins, Susan Olesek, Laila Tarraf, Nichelle Trambell Spellman, Rachel Bitecofer, Bridgette Corridan, Mary Lin McBride, Ali Ingersoll, Cara Jones, David Richman, Chris Pierce, Chris Tsakalakis, Jill Santa Lucia, Forrest Wright, Aisha Ponds, Donna Rhode, Kristin Firpo, Marney Sullivan, Deborah Egerton, Rebekah Rotstein, Daryan Rahimzadeh, Kat Gordon, Kat Williford, Jeff Slater, Bryan Gillette, Oneika Mays, Vanessa Loder, Kerri Kelly, Seane Corn, Sarah McDonald, Mary Felice, Shelly Tygielski, Joe Walsh, Rebecca Ward, Nicole Swiner, Natalie Grumet, Marti Grimminck, Ava Lashay, Maureen Aarons, Josh Izenberg, Trish Hegarty, Kim Hunter, Ashleigh Parker, Chris Hendricks, Danny Rosin, Michelle Simmons, Katherine Kennedy, Tony Lillios

Flowing East and West: The Perfectly Imperfect Journey to a Fulfilled Life

Kim has been a “dabbler” most of her life…she started her career in software, but it didn't give her much energy.  She knew she had a passion for food and started looking for ways to become more immersed in that world. She worked at her local farmers market, did some catering and worked in a couple of restaurants. She opened a restaurant, which gave her an outlet to create food that she loved and a community, but although it had a good run and moved her in the right direction, it still wasn't quite the right outlet. She tried a food truck and quickly discovered that too was not for her, but every one of these steps has been an important part of her journey. Kim has found that going quiet in between her different ventures has always led her down the right path and she believes this regeneration time is critical to happiness.  Kim now shares her passion for food and community through hosting farm to table dinners in Western North Carolina.  Please listen in to hear Kim's perfectly imperfect journey.    Bio: Kim Hunter is a chef, host, and curator of events that bring people together around the table. Inspired by sustainable ingredients that regenerate the land, she uses food as a medium for love and connection. Kim is a frequent chef and collaborator in underground supper clubs and pop-up dinners, and is passionate about food justice and equity. Kim was the chef/owner of her farm to table Korean restaurant in Raleigh, NC before relocating in 2022 to the mountains of North Carolina. Featuring cinematography by Nicholas Musuraca and scores by Roy Webb, these films embrace opacity and ooze paranoia while presenting portraits of sophisticated New York milieus harbouring evil in their midst. And, keeping to the noir theme, in Fear and Moviegoing in Toronto we discuss a 30th anniversary screening of Brian De Palma's Carlito's Way, starring Al Pacino as a gangster who carries his doom around inside him.  Time Codes: 0h 00m 45s:      THE FALLEN SPARROW [(dir.  With the sugary Fruit Loops of Summer movie fare already upon us, this week on Fabulous Film & Friends we are going to fortify our intellectual palate with some meaty, heavy-duty late 60's early/70's sci fi and compare Franklin Schaffner's 1968 masterpiece Planet of The Apes, starring Charlton Heston, Roddy McDowell, Kim Hunter, Maurice Evans, Linda Harrison and James Whitmore with Richard Fleischer's 1973 downbeat detective story Soylent Green  also starring Mr. Heston, along with Edward G. Robinson, Leigh Taylor-Young, Brock Peters, Chuck Connors and Dick Van Patten in a role he was born to play as a  weaselly usher in a walk in euthanasia center.  Joining me as we venture down this dark path of 70's dystopia are series regulars David Johnson D.M.D, Roseanne Caputi, author, producer and NY resident George Young and the mighty Gordon Alex Robertson. But before we take the first bite: the synopses. Planet of the Apes centers around George Taylor, an astronaut on a deep space voyage whose mission entails returning to Earth 2000 years after the launch of the spacecraft. The vessel crash lands on what seems to be a far off planet inhabited by by dumb and mute humans who are ruled by intelligent but brutal talking apes. Taylor is captured by the apes and shot in the throat making him unable to talk, but when his larynx heals, he lets out the immortal line, “Get your paws off of me you damned dirty ape!” What follows is a tug of war over the perceived intelligence and fading dominance of mankind, leading Taylor to discover the shocking truth of his predicament on the planet.  Soylent Green takes place in what was once the future, the year 2022 where in a poisoned world with very little food and clean water, much of the overpopulated humanity living in squalid apartments and packed shoulder to shoulder, sleeping on stairwells, feeds on a government issued allegedly plankton-based food product called Soylent Green. Scuffling and sweaty Detective Robert Thorn is assigned a murder case where a wealthy power master named William Simonson was assassinated. Thorn follows a trail of murderous clues that lead him to the discovery of the exact nature Soylent Green itself.
