Erniel Baez is a rising actor to watch originally from Cardenas, Cuba and now based in Montreal, Canada. At just the age of 15, he landed his first on-screen speaking role in the acclaimed Canadian police procedural crime drama series 19-2 (CTV). His breakthrough role came with the cult horror hit GAME OF DEATH which made its premiere at the 2017 SXSW Film Festival. Erniel's portrayal garnered widespread praise, positioning him as a rising star on the international stage. Since then, Erniel has made his mark starring in several major film and television productions including REACHER (Prime Video) alongside Alan Ritchson and CROSS (Prime Video) opposite Aldis Hodge. His magnetic presence and undeniable talent soon led to yet another exciting opportunity, and his biggest role to date, as he joined the cast of the eagerly anticipated series, HOTEL COCAINE. In this thrilling new drama, Erniel stars as the enigmatic Ray Dorado, a Cuban banker with a shadowy past and ties to the criminal underworld, set against the backdrop of the iconic Mutiny Hotel. Erniel shares the screen with some of Hollywood's biggest names including Danny Pino and Michael Chiklis. Two-time Survivor winner Sandra Diaz-Twine has been playing an exceptional game on the second season of Peacock's Emmy-Award winning competition show, The Traitors. This week, she joins Stephenie LaGrossa Kendrick and Jack on the Jack Vita Show, as they recap The Traitors S2 E9 "A Game of Death". Jack is traveling and recorded this episode from an Airbnb in Nashville. Unfortunately, his audio quality was not up to par in this episode. Our sincere apologies; we will do better next time. Episode 9 opens with Kate entering the dungeon and being presented an ultimatum: join the traitors, or be murdered. Kate accepts, and is floored when Phaedra asks her, "What's our strategy going forward?" Moments later, Kevin becomes the sixth faithful murdered, eliminating the Bling Empire alum from contention. The next morning at breakfast, MJ thinks Kate is acting shady, and calls her out in front of a group of people. Suspicion begins to surround Peter, after he proactively fought to keep Parvati in the game the night before. As Peter is targeted by the Bravo clique, he, Trishelle and John see the writing on the wall and believe that they will be the next three contestants eliminated, unless they are able to flip the script. The Peter pals try to form a plan. Peter pulls CT into a room, and CT tells Peter that he he's convinced that the former Bachelor star is a traitor. At the mission, Phaedra makes a major blunder. Sandra suggests to Phaedra that they change the order in which they are shooting at the targets, taking aim at Trishelle. Trishelle and CT make immediate notice of this, and CT realizes that Phaedra is a traitor. Later, CT approaches Trishelle and informs her that his opinion has shifted and that he will vote for Phaedra at the night's roundtable. Peter pulls Phaedra into a room, in an attempt to freeze Phaedra out from other conversations. Trishelle appeals to the Bravos, laying out a compelling case that Phaedra is a traitor. The episode ends on a cliffhanger, with four votes being cast for Peter and four for Phaedra, with MJ's vote to be revealed at the start of Episode 10. Jack and Stephenie recap the episode and share their initial thoughts (0:00 - 23:45). Then, Sandra joins the conversation (23:45 - 1:21:05). Sandra answers questions about Episode 9 and everything that has happened up to this point! Is Sandra committed to the Bravos, or is she playing both sides? Why did she vote for Peter instead of Phaedra in this week's roundtable? Where did she and Parvati stand entering the season, and how are things between the two of them now? Stephenie and Sandra discuss and compare their experiences from their respective time in the castle. Sandra gives us a peak behind the curtain and shares some of the juiciest info that wasn't shown on The Traitors. All this, and so much more! Later, Steph and Jack share their predictions for Episode 10 (1:21:05 - END). You can follow Sandra on Twitter (@SandraDTwine) and Instagram (@sassysdt). You can follow Stephenie (@steph_lagrossa_kendrick) on Instagram, and join her and Sandra on the Cruise of Deception!

In this Cinema Shock Rewind episode, we're re-publishing our episode covering THE 36TH CHAMBER OF SHAOLIN! As was the case with GAME OF DEATH, our previous Rewind episode, the history of THE 36TH CHAMBER OF SHAOLIN has some significant ties with the history of martial arts cinema in Hong Kong, which directly influences the creation of Tsui Hark's ONCE UPON A TIME IN CHINA. We're providing this episode as a refresher for older listners and new listeners alike, as it provides some fun context and cross-over with our upcoming episode covering Tsui's film. THE 36TH CHAMBER OF SHAOLIN was originally published in January 2021 as part of our Six Degrees of Kill Bill series.
In this Cinema Shock Rewind episode, we're republishing our episode covering Bruce Lee's GAME OF DEATH. The story of Bruce Lee ties in directly to our upcoming episode covering the production of ONCE UPON A TIME IN CHINA, so we're providing a refresher here for new listeners or longtime listeners who may want to revisit it. GAME OF DEATH was originally published in January 2021 as part of our series The Six Degrees of Kill Bill.
September 10, 2016 - Gabe and Rob discuss Hold in Reset, video games, Pennsic, Kickstarter projects, and cruises.
Inarguably Bruce Lee's worst movie (although we address it early and make clear, this IS NOT a Bruce Lee movie), Game of Death stands as a banner of what studios thought they could get away with once a big star dies and you have a property that you need to capitalize upon. It's pretty gross, actually. There are, however, a precious few moments of gold in here where Bruce is actually doing some fighting that are worth checking out. Come with us for the slog through a shit-fest to gather some nuggets of joy.Oh, and hey, please consider subscribing to our show! If you could leave us a review on iTunes or something, we'd be forever in your debt. Or, we could just buy you a coffee or some such thing when we start doing live shows. No Good November just so happens to be the same month as Bruce Lee's birthmonth. We picked the worst of the best of the Martial Arts movies. Be prepared for horrible acting, stunt double body swapping and monotone dubbing. It's going to be no-good.
Coming straight out of Montreal, Sébastien Landry (Seb) and Laurence Morais Lagacé (Baz) created one crazy, violent, fun, and well shot horror film called “Game of Death.” The stylish flick really got the duo the chance to spread their creative wings and let loose! Over the years, they had shot tons of music videos, as well as doing their own separate projects, all of which are beautiful and creative in their own light. I was super excited to talk to these guys about their amazing career as well as music (as they really know their stuff), Nu Metal making a comeback, and so much more! For Bruce Lee fans 2023 marks two anniversaries; both his untimely death and the release of Enter the Dragon, which would have catapulted him to worldwide superstar status had he lived to enjoy it. But Lee had been working on another project prior to his passing, surviving only in video fragments and notes. The version of “The Game of Death” released in 1978 exhibited little, if any, of Lee's original vision. Joining our own grandmaster Nathan Evans and returning champion Kevin (YouTube's StoryDive) on this episode of the Popzara Podcast is James Flower, writer, editor, and director behind The Final Game of Death, a mammoth 223 minute analysis of both the surviving footage and the philosophical methodology behind Bruce Lee's final film as part of Arrow Film's exquisite Bruce Lee at Golden Harvest Limited Edition, which also includes beautifully remastered 4K editions of The Big Boss, Way of the Dragon, Enter the Dragon, commentaries, interviews and so much more. Nate, Kevin and James gather on the field of (podcast) battle to chat about what it's like to undertake such a project, the love/hate relationship fans have with Clouse's original “The Game of Death”, how Lee's film would revolutionize and influence martial art films and videogames, shameless “Bruceploitation” clones, “sanitizing” Asian content for Western audiences, physical media vs. streaming, the importance of proper film restoration, and the timeless appeal Bruce Lee still commands around the world.

This week, we discuss martial arts superstar Bruce Lee and his controversial final film, 1978's GAME OF DEATH. That iconic yellow jumpsuit that The Bride wears in KILL BILL VOL. 1 was iconic years before Uma Thurman ever put it on. It was worn by the legendary Bruce Lee in what was to be his fifth film. GAME OF DEATH was set to be Bruce Lee's magnum opus, a film that defined his martial arts philosophies, and proved the superiority of his own school of martial arts, Jeet Kune Do. Unfortunately, Lee passed away having only completed a few minutes of footage. But that didn't stop greedy producers from cashing in on the now-world famous Lee, reediting the footage into a new film, and using stand-ins for Lee in the majority of the film. In this episode, we'll discuss Lee's life career leading up to GAME OF DEATH, and the Brucesploitation films that came about in the wake of his death, as well as the ultimately Brucesploitation film that would eventually be released by his own studio, five years after his passing. For our Six Degrees of Kill Bill series, we'll be talking about a wide array of movies that Quentin Tarantino has referenced or cited as an influence on his 2004 film, but no film may be as influential on KILL BILL as Toshiya Fujita's Japanese revenge classic LADY SNOWBLOOD. In this episode, we'll discuss the film's origin as a popular manga, and how the unlikely hiring of Fujita and screenwriter Kazuo Koike came to be. We also go down a rabbit hole regarding the Meiji era of Japanese history and how this historical context informs not only the manga, but the film itself. (I know that sounds boring as shit, but trust us, it's actually super cool.) We're big fans of the films of Quentin Tarantino here at Cinema Shock. It's no surprise that, like us, Tarantino wears his love of movies on his sleeve, and his movies show it, often filled with references and homages to the movies that he loves. And this is most apparent in his two-part revenge opus KILL BILL. For this, our first series of 2021, we're going to spend several weeks discussing some of the films that are most overtly referenced in KILL BILL. To kick things off, we're headed to Italy to discuss one of Tarantino's beloved spaghetti westerns, and one whose influence on KILL BILL will be very apparent to anyone who watches it. Join us in this episode as we discuss Giulio Petroni's DEATH RIDES A HORSE. For the fourth and final week of our Black Christmas series, we're joined by writer and friend of the show DJ Wilson to discuss the film that finally put Shane Black in the director's chair, KISS KISS BANG BANG! After the failure of THE LONG KISS GOODNIGHT, Black was essentially blacklisted from Hollywood, unable to get a job and went into self-isolation. When he came back, nearly a decade later, he was determined that this time, he'd be the one calling the shots, making sure that his story made it to the screen exactly as he'd envisioned it. This is the story of how that eventually happened, how Black's old friend Joel Silver helped him out, and how Black's film helped to resurrect the career of Robert Downey Jr (directly leading to his role in a little superhero movie you may have heard of).
