I sit down with professional triathlete Cecilia Davis-Hayes to talk a bit about her most recent accomplishment - finishing medical school. She tells me how being split between the worlds of triathlon and medical school sometimes had her dealing with imposter syndrome. I ask her the pointed question of - can she possibly continue to race triathlon professionally and be in residency at the same time. Her answer is thoughtful and to the heart of it. She also prescribes for me how to deal with changing identity over time to become the next version of who she is. In the middle of my conversation with Cecilia we talk about the dangers of cycling. Her devastating crash several years ago really illustrates the reason why crit racing is so dangerous. Post crash we commiserate about having both broken bones and discuss the kind of anxiety you have getting back in the saddle after you crash. in the last part of our chat I point out the tough question "Why is cycling so dangerous?" People often point to inexperience as the culprit for why so many crashes happen, but Cecilia points to another more likely reason that the sport is more dangerous than it is portrayed in the media. We jump back in time to the period of her life she spent in France teaching English to kids before she entered med school. France was the place she learned to love cycling. I practice my rusty French and Cecilia obliges me in my attempt. Cecilia spends a lot of time traveling and shares with me her number tip for reducing stress while traveling. Before heading off towards the end of the show I remember to ask her about the concussion research she did. She shares with me a little tidbit on an interesting correlation that seems to be appearing in concussion research that links concussions and further injuries.
