Severe weather is a fact of life in Kentucky, with tornadoes being one of the most dangerous—and misunderstood—threats we face. In this episode, Matt Dixon, senior meteorologist with the UK Ag Weather Center, breaks down the basics of tornadoes, explaining how tornadoes form, what conditions are right for their development, and what the Fujita (EF) Scale really means when we hear tornado ratings like EF-2 or EF-4. While on the topic of tornadoes, Matt also discusses common tornado myths, including the dangerous belief that taking shelter under highway overpasses is safe. Matt explains why some long‑held assumptions about tornado safety can put people in danger instead.   Also on tap: the Kentucky Division of Forestry's Tornado Strike Team plays a critical role in helping woodland owners assess storm-related damage. Forest landowners, homeowners, and municipalities or communities impacted by the December 2021 tornadoes can access technical forestry assistance and additional forestry services through this team. 4.8.26   For more episodes of From the Woods Today, visit https://forestry.ca.uky.edu/woods-today. In this episode, I sit down with Triad members Matt Dixon and Byron Hurren to break down how True North evolved from a founder-led advisory firm into a scalable, system-driven business.Just a few years ago, Matt was still running client appointments, and growth flowed almost entirely through him. Byron was another advisor on the team, trying to keep up inside a model that relied heavily on individual talent. Today, Matt is fully out of client meetings, Byron is leading and training a five-person sales team, and the firm is pacing for over $200M in new assets this year.We unpack exactly what changed — how they replaced personality-driven selling with a repeatable sales process, why conversations are replicated nearly word-for-word, and how training, accountability, and culture turned individual production into firm-wide scale. This episode is a clear look at what it actually takes to grow beyond the founder without losing control of the business. 3 of the biggest insights from Matt Dixon & Byron Hurren… #1.) Scaling Requires One Process, Not Multiple StylesTrue North didn't grow by hiring more talented closers. They grew by eliminating variation. Once every advisor followed the same repeatable process, results became predictable, coachable, and scalable. #2.) Selling the Plan Changed EverythingThe shift from pitching products to selling an ongoing planning process created clarity for clients and confidence for advisors. Planning became the product, and the team became the value. #3.) Accountability Is the Growth MultiplierWeekly training, recorded meetings, and direct feedback created a culture where improvement was non-negotiable. Advisors either followed the process or self-selected out.SHOW NOTEShttps://bradleyjohnson.com/152FOLLOW BRAD JOHNSON ON SOCIALTwitterInstagramLinkedInFOLLOW DBDL ON SOCIAL:YouTubeTwitterInstagramLinkedInFacebookDISCLOSURE DBDL podcast episode conversations are intended to provide financial advisors with ideas, strategies, concepts and tools that could be incorporated into their business and their life. Welcome to the Purple Patch Podcast! On the episode IRONMAN Master Coach Matt Dixon welcomes guest and Purple Patch Athlete Marina Gelman. In 2000, at the age of 40, Marina Gelman lost her college-aged daughter in a tragic car accident. At the time, Gelman was a new fitness enthusiast and avid runner. Overcome by grief after the accident, however, she holed herself up for almost two years and focused only on work to numb the pain. Unfortunately, during this time, she abandoned her fitness goals, started smoking again after a long hiatus, and put on weight; reaching over 200 pounds. Ironically, it was another tragedy a short time later, the death of her Father from a heart attack, that inspired her to start training again. As it turns out, training non-stop turned out to be a blessing and a curse. Yes, she lost weight and found relief from her stress and heartache, but she was also overtraining…severely. Marina eventually succumbed to the devastating effects of chronic fatigue. Even the simple act of walking up a flight of stairs became unbearable.  In 2012, after hearing about Matt Dixon and Purple Patch from her running club, she reached out. At the time, she was 240 pounds, her heaviest. She explained to Matt that she had only two small goals: Recover from her chronic fatigue Run three miles again. That's it. Matt set her sights higher. Not only did he give her hope, but he also gave her a long-term structured plan and a wonderful community of support. Today, Marina Gelman is a Half-Ironman finisher, with her hopes set on finishing a full Ironman in the near future. She has also lost 105 pounds and trains daily, fully recovered from chronic fatigue.   This is a story of hope and promise. Adopting an athletic mindset, regardless of where you find yourself, just may be the one spark to save your life. “Losing a child is something unimaginable to go through,” says Marina. “Sport, in a way, and running saved me from sadness for the rest of my life.” If you have any questions about the Purple Patch program, feel free to reach out at info@purplepatchfitness.com Purple Patch and Episode Resources Check out our world-class coaching and training options: Book a complementary needs assessment coaching call: https://calendly.com/coaches-purplepatch/offseason-assessment-call Tri Squad: https://www.purplepatchfitness.com/squad 1:1 Coaching: https://www.purplepatchfitness.com/11-coached Run Squad: https://www.purplepatchfitness/com/run-squad Strength Squad: https://www.purplepatchfitness.com/strength-1 Live & On-Demand Bike Sessions: https://www.purplepatchfitness.com/bike Explore our training options in detail: https://bit.ly/3XBo1Pi  Live in San Francisco? Welcome to the What's Next! Podcast with Tiffani Bova.    I'm super excited to welcome Matt Dixon to the show. He is a Founding Partner at DCM Insights, a global training and advisory firm, and a leading expert in business development and client experience. He's a frequent contributor to HBR and an author of bestselling books, including The Effortless Experience, The Jolt Effect, and his most famous, The Challenger Sale which was a #1 Amazon and Wall Street Journal bestseller. We crossed paths in the CEB Gartner days and I'm just thrilled to have him back here today to talk about a new book he co-authored, The Activator Advantage.    THIS EPISODE IS PERFECT FOR…leaders, consultants, and business developers looking to stand out in a more competitive market.   TODAY'S MAIN MESSAGE…strong client relationships and quality work used to be enough to maintain loyalty, but not anymore. As buying behaviors shift and competition increases, leaders need a new approach. Matt shares what sets today's top rainmakers apart: they're not just experts, they're activators—people who proactively offer insights, open doors, and create value long before the deal is signed.    KEY TAKEAWAYS… Great work alone no longer guarantees client loyalty. Activators are winning by being proactive connectors, not passive experts. Trusted advisors often box out colleagues and limit firm-wide growth. Internal collaboration makes client relationships more resilient.   WHAT I LOVE MOST…Matt's insight that rainmakers of the past relied on reputation but today's leaders build trust by sharing value before the sale even starts.   Running Time: 28:00    Subscribe on iTunes     Find Tiffani Online: LinkedIn Facebook X    Find Matt Online: LinkedIn   Matt's Book: The Activator Advantage: What Today's Rainmakers Do Differently

Matt Dixon: The Activator Advantage Matt Dixon is Founding Partner of DCM Insights, a global training and advisory firm, and a leading expert in business development and client experience. His first book The Challenger Sale was a #1 Amazon and Wall Street Journal bestseller, and translated in a dozen languages. His newest book with colleagues Rory Channer, Karen Freeman, and Ted McKenna is The Activator Advantage: What Today's Rainmakers Do Differently*. At lot of us know the traits of the kind of person who's successful at attracting new business. What many of us don't know, is that what's working today is actually different than what we traditionally think. In this conversation, Matt and I a take a detailed look at the professionals who are landing the most new business – and what they're doing that works. Key Points The loyalty that once existed between professionals and their clients has changed substantially in recent years. A type of professional called an activator represents the highest performance in business development. Activators assume their best clients will leave at some point and are consistently working to build a pipeline of opportunities. Many professionals tend to protect client relationships. In contrast, activators actively bring colleagues into these relationships. Activators don't wait for inquiries. They meet opportunities happen by building relationships before paid work begins. Activators go way past birthdays and factual knowledge about others. They discover what's important to their clients as individuals. Activators go way past “as is” content and work hard to thoughtfully connect it to a prospect or client's situation. In this episode of The Rainmaking Podcast, host Scott Love speaks with Matt Dixon—bestselling author of The Challenger Sale and The Jolt Effect—about his latest research and book, The Activator Advantage: What Today's Rainmakers Do Differently. Based on data from the Rainmaker Genome Project, Matt introduces five rainmaker profiles, highlighting the “Activator” as the most effective. Activators stand out by committing consistently to business development, building broad and deep networks, and proactively delivering value to clients before they even ask for it. Rather than relying on personality, Activators succeed through behavior—habits, systems, and deliberate outreach. Matt explains that Activators aren't just connectors; they transform insights and introductions into meaningful client engagements. They develop daily routines, use platforms like LinkedIn strategically, and focus on helping others as a way of building trust and generating future opportunities. This episode also breaks down three action steps for aspiring rainmakers: plan business development time weekly, expand and engage your network, and proactively share insights that clients didn't know they needed. With data-driven insights and real-world examples, this conversation offers a powerful blueprint for professionals who want to become indispensable advisors. In this episode of Brainfluence, host Roger Dooley welcomes back Matt Dixon, founding partner of DCM Insights and co-author of the bestselling "The Challenger Sale." Dixon shares insights from his latest book, The Activator Advantage: What Today's Rainmakers Do Differently, which is rooted in groundbreaking research on how top professionals win and grow client relationships in the increasingly competitive world of professional services. Dixon unpacks the five distinct profiles that partners in fields like law, accounting, and consulting tend to fall into, with a particular focus on the "Activator"—a proactive, well-networked rainmaker who brings new ideas to clients and promotes deep collaboration within firms. Dixon explains that while only about 15–20% of partners naturally exhibit strong activator traits, everyone can learn to adopt key behaviors that set activators apart: maintaining a regular business development cadence, building broad and deep networks, and proactively creating value for clients. He reveals that the biggest client complaint isn't over-contact; instead, it's wishing they heard more from their trusted advisors with fresh insights and opportunities. The conversation offers practical takeaways for both leaders and individuals in professional services who want to move beyond waiting for the phone to ring and instead, become indispensable partners in their clients' success. In today's conversation, Matt Dixon reveals why the professionals dominating in today's market aren't necessarily the most credentialed, but the most proactive. We explore Matt's research across 3,000 professionals and break down the five business development personas, highlighting the unique traits and habits that make the “Activator” profile the highest performer of them all. Whether you're in sales, consulting, law, or simply trying to future-proof your career, adopting the activator mindset can radically shift how you're perceived and what doors open next. This episode will show you how to stop waiting for opportunity—and start creating it. What to Listen For [00:00:00] Why clients forget about you—and how activators stay top of mind [00:01:14] The 5 business development personas and why activators win [00:09:56] Data shows activators are the top performers—and least likely to fail [00:17:52] How activators manage their network like a pipeline—not a popularity contest [00:24:13] The myth of being annoying: why clients want more outreach, not less [00:33:08] “No” isn't the end: how activators turn rejection into opportunity [00:39:24] The 4-part insight framework for opening doors with ideas [00:45:57] Why you must prune stale relationships to stay high-impact [00:54:49] The activator approach to events: plan, target, and follow through [01:01:53] Don't just post on LinkedIn—why DMs and engagement matter more Episode Takeaways: Activators don't rely on being top of mind—they engineer it by adding value consistently. Smart professionals build leverage by helping others long before there's anything to gain. Great client relationships aren't the result of great work—they're often the cause of it. Build trust early, not just after the sale. No doesn't mean never. Activators stay present, learn why they lost, and often get the callback when things go sideways. Learn to prune. Most advisors dream of growing their business to the next level without grinding themselves into burnout. But how do you scale without sacrificing your time, freedom, and sanity? In this milestone 100th episode of Do Business. Do Life., I sat down with returning guest, Anthony Pellegrino, founder of Goldstone Financial Group. His first appearance on the show (Episode 16) was one of the most downloaded ever, and now he's back to share how he has doubled his firm's assets year over year—from $232M to over $460M+—all while building a business that runs without him behind the desk. For years, Anthony prided himself on being a machine—unstoppable, always grinding. But a simple conversation with his grandmother changed everything when she told him, "Machines break." That wake-up call forced him to rethink his approach and build a firm that could scale beyond just him.In this episode, Anthony breaks down how he transformed his role from financial advisor to CEO & visionary, built a team of elite advisors, and developed a business model that thrives without him being in the trenches. If you've become the bottleneck in your firm, this episode reveals Anthony's proven system for breaking free and scaling beyond what you ever thought was possible. 3 of the biggest insights from Anthony Pellegrino …#1.) If you're still doing all the client work, you're the bottleneck. Anthony shares how he removed himself from sales, client servicing, and marketing—without losing clients and growing exponentially#2.) Helping others scale strengthens your own success. Anthony doesn't just build his own firm—he openly shares his strategies with other advisors, proving that growth isn't a zero-sum game. His collaboration with leaders like Matt Dixon highlights how teaching others can reinforce your own systems and elevate the entire industry.#3.) Hiring doesn't create competitors—it builds a stronger business. Anthony rejected the fear that training advisors would lead them to go out on their own. Instead, he built a system and culture so strong that top talent never wants to leave.SHOW NOTEShttps://bradleyjohnson.com/100FREE GIFT + JOIN THE DBDL INSIDER CREWToday's Gift: 30 minute 1:1 coaching call with BradAre you a financial advisor who feels stuck, needs help, or simply wants to have a conversation with Brad?
