It's not only a blank to him, but a mystery. Why as a teen did he suddenly become sullen and vacant, abandoning the activities and people that had meant most to him? How did he, the son of hippy activists, wind up enlisting in the first place? Then on his first night back, Matthew sees a house go up in flames, and it turns out a local college student has died inside. And this event sparks a memory of a different fire, an unsolved crime from long ago, a part of Matthew's past that might lead to all the answers he's been searching for. What he finds will connect the old fire and the new, a series of long-unsolved mysteries, and a ruthless act of murder.

Matthew Rose’s mind is a mystery. Especially to himself. A bombing in Iraq has left the former soldier with a traumatic brain injury, and now he can’t be sure about anything. The past is a cloudy haze to him, filled with jumbles of impressions and not many solid memories. Unfortunately for him, that could have deadly consequences for his future – how can he protect himself from a killer when he can’t even trust his own mind? That’s the pulse-pounding premise of THE BLAZE, a mesmerizing new novel from author Chad Dundas, who garnered massive acclaim for his 2016 debut novel, Champion of the World. After leaving the Army, Matthew has trouble acclimating to life back in the States. His head wound means he doesn’t remember major events from his own life, but even worse, major relationships feel unfamiliar to him as well. He knows he should love his mother, for example, but she seems like a stranger to him. The heartbreaking scenario is rendered even worse when Rose receives the news that his father has killed himself. Forced to return to Montana where he grew up to settle his dad’s estate, Matthew is on shaky ground. He knows his parents had divorced long ago and that he and his father had stayed in communication, but they weren’t close, and he doesn’t know why. Soon, his faulty memory will become a problem that could spell his own doom. It begins with a deadly and suspicious fire. Shortly after returning to Montana, Matthew takes a late-night walk to clear his head and witnesses a massive blaze that burns down a house and leaves a local college student dead. It’s a terrible tragedy, but even more troubling, the event stirs foggy recollections inside his brain, about another fire in this town many years before…and perhaps his own connection to the person who started it. CHAD DUNDAS has been a sportswriter for ESPN, NBC Sports, the Associated Press, Sporting News, Bleacher Report and other national and regional outlets. His short fiction has appeared in such publications as the Beloit Fiction Journal, Sycamore Review, Sou'Wester and Thuglit, and he is the author of Champion of the World, which was named a Boston Globe Best Book of 2016. A fourth-generation Montanan, he earned his MFA from the University of Montana and lives with his wife and daughter in Missoula. Hello hello, word nerds! Welcome to our latest episode of DIY MFA Radio. Today I’m speaking with Chad Dundas, the debut author of the historical sports novel: THE CHAMPION OF THE WORLD. When publishing their debuts, writers have to contend with many different hurdles. They need to grab the attention of agents and editors. They need to hook readers from the very first page. And they must do all of this at a time when they don’t yet have a track record of success and a huge fanbase to rely on. Some authors might be tempted to play it safe, but not Chad Dundas. He chooses a topic--professional wrestling--that not many people are interested in. He sets his book in a world that most people don’t know much about: the traveling carnivals of the 1920s. And he opens his book with a chapter where at the end it’s unclear whether the point-of-view character is even still alive. As writers, I think it’s so important for us to hear not just from major bestselling authors with dozens (if not hundreds) of books under their belts. I also want you to hear from authors who are just a few steps ahead of where you are. I want you to know that you can take risks in your debut novel, and I want to introduce you to writers who are doing just that. In this episode Chad and I discuss: Starting your novel when something happens Researching to get the historical elements just right The craft of writing on a chapter level Reality versus fiction in your writing and your life Plus, Chad’s #1 tip for writers. More about Chad: Chad Dundas earned his MFA from the University of Montana, and his short fiction has appeared in the Beloit Fiction Journal, Sycamore Review, Sou’Wester, and Thuglit. Since 2001, he’s worked as a sportswriter for national outlets including ESPN, NBC Sports, Sporting News, Bleacher Report, and the Associated Press, as well as local and regional newspapers. A fourth-generation Montanan, he lives with his wife and children in Missoula. To learn more about Chad check out his website, or follow him on Twitter. For more info and show notes: DIYMFA.com/115
