On this edition of Free City Radio we hear reflections and contemporary ideas from Emma Feltes, who articulates a legal framing for understanding Canada as unceded territories. This perspective is particularly important in the context of understanding the territorial realities of lands and waterways that today are at the heart of the major national development projects that the current Liberal government of PM Mark Carney is pushing. This is a critical voice of context on the territorial realities on this point. Oxfam Inequality Report 2026: Resisting the rule of the rich and protecting freedom from billionaire power

In our second episode of the season, executive director of Oxfam Canada, Lauren Ravon returns for our annual focus on the Oxfam Inequality Report and this year we are also joined by senior director of Strategy and Innovation at Family Service Toronto and national director of Campaign 2000, Leila Sarangi.  We discuss Oxfam's latest report on global inequality, Resisting the Rule of the Rich: Protecting Freedom from Billionaire Power, the capture of political power by the billionaire class, the rise of authoritarianism and how this is being lived in Canada.  Ravon says: "One of the main points that we're trying to get across in this year's Oxfam report. Is saying that not only does massive wealth allow you to buy luxury items … It allows you to buy political influence, and this is really what we see as most troubling … this political capture … around the world and it's a risk for us here in Canada too, is that ultimately extreme wealth concentration, this kind of billionaire wealth that we're talking about, is incompatible with the very idea of democracy. That you cannot have a healthy democracy when so much is held in the hands of so few … And it's not a new trend, but we're seeing it accelerating. And what's really concerning is that this is eroding civil and political rights … is actually a really fertile ground for authoritarianism." Reflection on increasing poverty in Canada, Sarangi says: "Our data has shown and our report cards the last two years, the largest historic increases in poverty since the pandemic. So it's striking. While billionaire wealth is growing, poverty rates are rising, and incomes are plummeting, and depth of poverty is increasing … We have in Canada, two and a half million children living in food insecure households. ..in the provinces alone, we're not asking about the Territories. We're not collecting that data … Parents are skipping meals so the kids don't have to. They're foregoing buying medication or they're cutting their pills in half to save money. They're making strategic decisions every day, every week."  Oxfam's Global Inequality Report: Resisting the Rule of the Rich: Protecting Freedom from Billionaire Power Oxfam Canada's Report: The Rise of the Super-Rich: The State of Inequality in Canada About today's guests:  Lauren Ravon is a feminist and social justice advocate with over 20 years of experience in human rights and international development. She is currently the executive director of Oxfam Canada, where she leads a fabulous team working to advance women's rights and economic justice by tackling the root causes of poverty, inequality and exclusion. Before joining Oxfam, Ravon worked at the International Centre for Human Rights and Democratic Development (Rights & Democracy) where she managed the organization's human rights advocacy programs in the Americas. She has also worked to tackle gender-based violence and promote sexual and reproductive rights with Planned Parenthood Global and the International Rescue Committee. Ravon has conducted extensive policy research and campaigned on the right to food, economic inequality and tax justice, sexual and reproductive health and rights, and the role of women's movements. She is passionate about building alliances across sectors to protect and advance human rights. Ravon co-chairs the board of directors of the Humanitarian Coalition, which brings together Canada's leading aid organizations to join forces during international humanitarian disasters. She is also a member of the board of directors of the Welcome Collective, a local organization dedicated to supporting refugee claimants in Montreal. Leila Sarangi is senior director of Strategy and Innovation at Family Service Toronto and National Director of Campaign 2000: End Child and Family Poverty. With over 25 years of experience in non‑profit leadership, coalition‑building, and policy advocacy, she is a nationally recognized leader on child and family poverty, income security, gender equity, and social infrastructure. Leila is the lead author of Campaign 2000's annual national Child and Family Poverty and Disability Poverty Report Cards and regularly testifies before Parliamentary and municipal committees. Inside Renew Medic: The Hidden Goldmine In Cabinet Restoration

Send us a textReady to rethink what a “niche” franchise can do? We're joined by Storm Miller, director of franchise development at Rep'M Group, to dig into the surprisingly large world of cabinet restoration and why institutional capital loves this space. Storm explains how Renew Medic spun out of a legacy brand after franchisees found cabinet jobs paid 10x more than typical furniture fixes, then lined up national insurance relationships to feed consistent, high-value work.We get specific about the numbers. Territories are pre-mapped using owner-occupied homes, with insurance data showing steady demand from everyday water and fire incidents. ITEM 19 data: With average tickets around $8,000 and fewer direct competitors, operators can build multi-million-dollar shops supported by CNC machines, edge banders, and trained techs who restore, store, and reinstall with precision. Storm walks through the ITEM 19 and a Denver operator's $5.8M revenue and seven-figure EBITDA displayed within, including material costs that can sit near 8 to 10 percent, and payment cycles that land closer to 30 days than 90. It's a rare three-way win: insurers cut claim costs, mitigation partners speed up cycles, and homeowners stay in their routines without months-long tear-outs.We also tackle the why behind the investment: 7,500 to 10,000 square feet of light industrial space, scalable equipment that qualifies for Section 179, and a workflow designed to keep jobs moving fast. If you're a white-collar leader comfortable managing blue-collar teams, this model rewards hands-on ownership early and thoughtful delegation later. We cover real estate as a long-term lever, exit planning from day one, and how Discovery Day in Memphis lets candidates see the operation, training center, and leadership up close.Curious whether a need-based, B2B engine with national accounts and large territories fits your goals for 2026? popular Wiki of the Day

pWotD Episode 3172: Greenland Welcome to popular Wiki of the Day, spotlighting Wikipedia's most visited pages, giving you a peek into what the world is curious about today. With 312,200 views on Wednesday, 7 January 2026 our article of the day is Greenland.Greenland is an autonomous territory of the Kingdom of Denmark and is the largest of the kingdom's three constituent parts by land area, the others being Denmark proper and the Faroe Islands. It shares a small 1.2 km border with Canada on Hans Island. Citizens of Greenland are full citizens of Denmark and of the European Union. Greenland is one of the Overseas Countries and Territories of the European Union and is part of the Council of Europe. It is the world's largest island and lies between the Arctic and Atlantic oceans, east of the Canadian Arctic Archipelago. Greenland's Kaffeklubben Island, off the northern coast, is the world's northernmost undisputed point of land—Cape Morris Jesup on the mainland was thought to be so until the 1960s. The capital and largest city is Nuuk. Economically, Greenland is heavily reliant on aid from Denmark, amounting to nearly half of the territory's total public revenue.Though a part of the continent of North America, Greenland has been politically and culturally associated with the European kingdoms of Norway and Denmark for more than a millennium, beginning in 986. Greenland has been inhabited at intervals over at least the last 4,500 years by circumpolar peoples whose forebears migrated there from what is now Canada. Norsemen from Norway settled the uninhabited southern part of Greenland beginning in the 10th century (having previously settled Iceland), and their descendants lived in Greenland for 400 years until disappearing in the late 15th century. The 13th century saw the arrival of Inuit. From the late 15th century, the Portuguese attempted to find the northern route to Asia, which ultimately led to the earliest cartographic depiction of its coastline. In the 17th century, Dano-Norwegian explorers reached Greenland again, finding their earlier settlement extinct and reestablishing a permanent Scandinavian presence on the island. When Denmark and Norway separated in 1814, Greenland was transferred from the Norwegian to the Danish crown. The 1953 Constitution of Denmark ended Greenland's status as a colony, integrating it fully into the Danish state. In the 1979 Greenlandic home rule referendum, Denmark granted home rule to Greenland. In the 2008 Greenlandic self-government referendum, Greenlanders voted for the Self-Government Act, which transferred more power from the Danish government to the local Naalakkersuisut (Greenlandic government). Under this structure, Greenland gradually assumed responsibility for a number of governmental services and areas of competence. The Danish government retains control of citizenship, monetary policy, security policies, and foreign affairs. With the melting of the ice due to global warming, its abundance of mineral wealth, and its strategic position between Eurasia, North America, and the Arctic zone, Greenland holds strategic importance for the Kingdom of Denmark, NATO, and the European Union. Most residents of Greenland are Inuit. The population is concentrated mainly on the southwest coast, strongly influenced by climatic and geographical factors, and the rest of the island is sparsely populated. With a population of 56,583 (2022), Greenland is the least densely populated country in the world. Greenland is socially progressive, like metropolitan Denmark; education and healthcare are free, and LGBTQ rights in Greenland are some of the most extensive in the world. Sixty-seven percent of its electricity production comes from renewable energy, mostly from hydropower. Since at least 2025, the United States has waged hybrid warfare against Greenland; as a result, the Danish Defence Intelligence Service (DDIS) included the United States as a threat to national security alongside Russia and China that year. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 02:56 UTC on Thursday, 8 January 2026.For the full current version of the article, see Greenland on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Ruth.

Dante Ollivierre sees stories everywhere. On the streets of Kingstown, in the quiet corners of St Vincent and the Grenadines, in the faces of people who carry their histories with pride. He is a director and creative director who listens closely, then shapes what he hears into images that breathe. His early training at Saint Vincent Community College helped sharpen his eye, but his instinct for truth is entirely his own. As a multidisciplinary storyteller, Dante pursues the kind of honesty that cannot be staged. He works to draw out raw performances, the kind that linger long after the screen fades to black. His background in documentary and corporate film production gives him a steady hand, yet his heart stays open to surprise. Each project becomes a search for a moment when real life steps into the frame. That dedication has carried him into new territory as an emerging filmmaker. Dante has led the production of documentaries and corporate films for the French Public Agency for International Technical Cooperation, working within the Expertise France program for the Caribbean Overseas Countries and Territories. His repertoire reaches across documentary films, music videos, and commercials, where he shifts with ease between bright aspirational energy and moody dramatic tension. Whatever the tone, he brings a sense of intention that holds the work together. As Founder & Creative Director of Offhand, Dante continues to expand his voice. His recent project, Bush Medicine: Stories that Remember the Land, invites listeners and viewers into the deep memory of place, showing how art can reconnect people to what sustains them. The Visual Intonation Podcast follows this journey, exploring how Dante builds meaning from light, sound, and human connection. Each episode becomes a lesson in how a filmmaker learns to see. Dante Ollivierre's Socials: Source: Instagram Danté (@danteollivierre) • Instagram photos and videos  Source: Vimeo Dante Ollivierre - Vimeo  Support the showVisual Intonation Website: https://www.visualintonations.com/Visual Intonation Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/visualintonation/Vante Gregory's Website: vantegregory.comVante Gregory's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/directedbyvante/ To support me on Patreon (thank you): patreon.com/visualintonations Tiktok: www.tiktok.com/@visualintonation Tiktok: www.tiktok.com/@directedbyvante

More than 200 million people live today in contested territories – places where the authority of the state is challenged outright and armed groups exercise full or fluid control. This number has risen by 30 million since 2021. These are not distant statistics; each figure represents a person living in the shadow of competing powers, making difficult choices in an almost impossible environment. How do people navigate the presence of multiple, often competing, armed actors? Is dignity found in defiance, or safety in uneasy compliance? How do families secure food, water or medical care when neither the state nor armed groups are able or willing to provide basic services? And, crucially, what can humanitarian actors do to better protect and assist those caught in these fractured landscapes? In this post, and drawing on recently published research in Cameroon, Iraq and the Philippines, Arjun Claire, Senior Policy Adviser at the ICRC, and Matthew Bamber-Zryd, the ICRC's Adviser on Armed Groups, offer five insights to help strengthen humanitarian responses in contested territories – insights rooted in the lived realities of the people who navigate them every day.

As cities transform, Métamorphoses Urbaines writes history with their inhabitants. Human stories at the heart of every territory.Métamorphoses Urbaines (literally Urban Metamorphoses) is more than an urban planning agency — it's a collective exploring how cities can change when people are placed at the heart of every decision. Founded in 2024 by Laurent Pinon, the agency brings together architects, urban planners, engineers, and geographers with one shared belief: that the future of territories is written with their inhabitants. From relocating the village of Miquelon, threatened by rising seas, to reimagining the Chaudron neighborhood in Réunion Island, Métamorphoses Urbaines turns climate challenges and social realities into opportunities for new ways of living. With over 80 ongoing projects in France, overseas territories, and Belgium, the agency proves that urbanism is not just about plans and numbers, but about collective stories, resilience, and shared futures. With the voice of Esther GreslinAudio production comdarchipodcastImage teaser © Métamorphose Urbaine___If you like the podcast do not hesitate:. to subscribe so you don't miss the next episodes,. to leave us stars and a comment :-),. to follow us on Instagram @comdarchipodcast to find beautiful images, always chosen with care, so as to enrich your view on the subject.Nice week to all of you ! Assessing the Jones Act: Perspectives from the Noncontiguous States and Territories

Noncontiguous states and territories are disproportionally harmed by the Jones Act's restrictions on shipping competition. Rooted in 18th-century protectionism, the law significantly increases the cost of water transportation for these shipping-dependent parts of the country when trading with each other and the US mainland. Beyond these economic costs, the Jones Act has also proven to be ineffective in meeting the country's national security needs amidst a collapse in shipbuilding, a declining fleet, and a shortage of mariners. There is a growing and bipartisan recognition among policymakers that an overhaul of US maritime policy is sorely needed to meet the country's economic and national security needs. This policy forum will feature Representative Ed Case (D‑HI) and Representative James Moylan (R‑GU) along with the Cato Institute's Colin Grabow to discuss the Jones Act's broader economic costs, national security implications, and possible reforms.  Peter Harrison: The Evolution of Belief: Science, Religion & Modernity

In this episode, I am joined by the eminent historian of science and religion, Peter Harrison. We examine how we've inherited a distorted narrative about the relationship between science and religion. Rather than the conflict narrative we're accustomed to, Harrison reveals that science and religion are not historical foes, and that modern Western sciences are actually built on theological assumptions. The real game-changer comes from tracing how Protestant reforms—notably the attack on allegorical readings of scripture and the demand for each individual to justify their belief— fundamentally transformed how we read both Scripture and nature, eventually leading to our impoverished, utilitarian view of the natural world. Harrison shows how concepts we think are timeless - like "belief," "supernatural," and even "religion" itself - are modern inventions with specific histories, and how understanding these genealogies can help us see that many of our contemporary problems in science-religion dialogue are artifacts of the categories themselves rather than real conflicts in the world. The conversation ultimately suggests that by understanding how we arrived at our current conceptual frameworks, we might find new ways forward that don't trap us in the either/or thinking that dominates so much of contemporary debate. Dr. Peter Harrison is a former Andreas Idreos Professor of Science and Religion in the University of Oxford, and Emeritus Professor of the History of Science at the University of Queensland, where he was also an Australian Laureate fellow and Founding Director of the Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities (IASH). His many celebrated books include The Fall of Man and the Foundations of Science, The Cambridge Companion to Science and Religion, The Territories of Science and Religion, & his newest book Some New World: Myths of Supernatural Belief in a Secular Age. ONLINE SUMMIT: Democracy in Tension - NAVIGATING THE INTERLOCKING CRISES OF DEMOCRACY AND RELIGION Democracy today faces profound challenges – polarization, inequality, populist authoritarianism, and widespread cynicism are eroding the foundations of democratic life.
