It seems we've always had monsters among us. We've long been enthralled by dragons and and giants, by the likes of Frankenstein and Godzilla and Dracula, by witches and werewolves and countless others. They roam our maps and creation myths; they crop up in our dreams, in our children's books, in our political rhetoric. Where do these beings spring from? What do they do for us? How have they changed over time? And, ultimately, what do our monsters say about their makers? My guests today are Dr. Natalie Lawrence and Dr. Surekha Davies. Both are historians of science and authors of recent books on monsters: Natalie's book is Enchanted creatures: Our monsters and their meanings. Surekha's book is Humans: A monstrous history. Here, Surekha, Natalie, and I talk about monsters as category breakers and boundary walkers—and about how monstrosity is in the eye of the beholder. We walk through a menagerie of monsters—from the apocryphal blemmyes of old travelogues, to a hairy-faced girl in 16th century France, to the figure of Caliban in The Tempest. We discuss the psychological and cultural forces that generate monsters. And we talk about whether anyone would want to live in a world without them. Along the way we touch on, the "monstrification" of social groups; psychoanalysis; our primal fear of snakes; curiosity cabinets; therianthropes and the Cave of the Three Brothers; the relationship between the monstrosity and geography; our long fascination with so-called monstrous births; the Muppet Show; dinosaurs and sea creatures; and the question what monsters might do for children in particular. Alright friends, it's the monstrous season and this is a fun one to help you celebrate. Enjoy!   Notes 3:00 – Grendel's mother has often been a subject of critical discussion and adaptation. See, for instance, the 2018 novel, The Mere Wife. 12:30 – For a classic history-of-science treatment of “wonders” (including monsters) and our conceptions of nature, see here.  18:30 – For those unfamiliar with muppets, an episode of the Muppet Show, which premiered in 1976. 24:00 – The blemmyes were often the subjects of illustration—for examples, see here. 26:00 – For more on Sir Walter Raleigh and the blemmyes, see Dr. Davies' recent newsletter post. 29:00 – One example of monsters at the margins of maps can be seen in the Psalter World Map. 32:00 – For more on Cave of the Trois Freres and the Sorcerer, see here.  34:00 – For more on shamanism, see our recent episode with Manvir Singh.  37:00 – Therianthropes are relatively rare in cave art, but have nonetheless been widely discussed. Welcome, my devilish fiends!Join me as we trace the roots of the vampire back to the women who came before her: Lamia, Lilith, and the succubi. These "monstrous" figures haunted ancient myth and medieval imagination, embodying male fears of female power, pleasure, and autonomy. Long before Dracula, they turned desire into danger and defiance into sin. Their stories reveal how myth and theology worked together to make women's power appear monstrous and how those same fears still shape the vampire we know today. So, close your doors and windows, turn off the lights, get cozy, and join me... ***Listener Discretion is Strongly Advised*******************Sources & References:Epic of Gilgamesh – references to lilītu demons. The Alphabet of Ben Sira. The Zohar (Book of Splendor).Philostratus, Life of Apollonius of Tyana.Heinrich Kramer and Jacob Sprenger, Malleus Maleficarum.King James VI of Scotland, Daemonologie.John Keats, Lamia.Sarah Iles Johnston, Restless Dead: Encounters Between the Living and the Dead in Ancient Greece (University of California Press, 1999).Daniel Ogden, Drakōn: Dragon Myth and Serpent Cult in the Greek and Roman Worlds (Oxford University Press, 2013).Judith Plaskow, The Coming of Lilith: Essays on Feminism, Judaism, and Sexual Ethics, 1972–2003 (Beacon Press, 2005).Gershom Scholem, Kabbalah (Quadrangle/New York Times Book Co., 1974).Raphael Patai, The Hebrew Goddess (Wayne State University Press, 1990).Jeffrey Burton Russell, Witchcraft in the Middle Ages (Cornell University Press, 1972).Deborah Lyons, Dangerous Gifts: Gender and Exchange in Ancient Greece (Princeton University Press, 1997).Diane Apostolos-Cappadona, Dictionary of Women in Religious Art (Oxford University Press, 1996).Nina Auerbach, Our Vampires, Ourselves (University of Chicago Press, 1995).Paul Barber, Vampires, Burial, and Death: Folklore and Reality (Yale University Press, 1988).Barbara Creed, The Monstrous-Feminine: Film, Feminism, Psychoanalysis (Routledge, 1993).Marina Warner, From the Beast to the Blonde: On Fairy Tales and Their Tellers (Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 1995).****************Leave Us a 5* Rating, it really helps the show!Apple Podcast:https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/beauty-unlocked-the-podcast/id1522636282Spotify Podcast:https://open.spotify.com/show/37MLxC8eRob1D0ZcgcCorA****************Follow Us on Social Media & Subscribe to our YouTube Channel!YouTube:@beautyunlockedspodcasthourTikTok:tiktok.com/@beautyunlockedthepod****************MUSIC & SOUND FX:"Beast by Beast" by Edward Karl Hanson"An Obsession" by DayonEpidemic SoundFind the perfect track on Epidemic Sound for your content and take it to the next level! Imagine love on the run, but monstrous, deranged, and dripping with style. From the early teasers, this film doesn't just flirt with chaos — it marries it. We're breaking down everything we know so far, what this could mean for the genre, and why this might be the wild ride we didn't know we needed. Can Hollywood please stop trying so hard to win everyone over? In the race to be relevant, studios are churning out movies that feel like corporate pitches instead of passionate stories. The result? Episode 241 and we're back with the diamond miners and their Kaias and Cocopans. More about this in a minute. A big thank you to Donald Paterson who's great-great-great grandfather founded Standard Bank, he's sent a couple of pictures I'm going to use in my next newsletter. And to Rob Bernstein who's producing a photo-book and who's asked me to write an epilogue, thanks for the coffee chat and the opportunity. Last we heard about plans for South African Confederation, this episode ties up with the momentum building towards the invasion of Zululand by the British, and almost simultaneously, the first Anglo-Boer War. We've entered the mid-1870s where all manner of momentums are also building up globally as the European powers jostled for African land in order to feed their industrial centres, and their geopolitical ambitions. The panic on the Vienna Stock exchange in May 1873 caused shares to decline worldwide and ushered in the 1873-1879 Great Depression. The Suez Canal was also close to bankcruptcy because there weren't enough steam ships in the world and the canal was better adapted to steam. The Khedive of Egypt was forced to sell his shares in the Suez Canal Company to the British Government with help from bankers and the Rothschild family. In Britain the downturn was going to last until much later - the late 1890s, and diamond prices were also falling. Despite this, South Africa was in a bit of a boom period. In the diamond fields, the diggers were facing a problem and it was about geology. They had been digging in what they called yellow ground which was kimberlite rock. Over millions of years, the kimberlite in the top part of the volcanic pipe was exposed to the surface and weathered by the elements, including water and air. This process oxidized the iron-rich minerals in the rock, giving it a soft, friable, yellowish-brown color. Because it was so soft, it was easy for the early diggers to excavate with simple picks and shovels and to sieve for diamonds. But as they dug deeper by 1873 they passed through the weathered yellow ground and hit the un-oxidized, fresh kimberlite rock below. This rock, which they called "blue ground" due to its hard, bluish-gray color, was much more compact and difficult to mine. Its hardness led many early prospectors to abandon their claims, mistakenly believing they had reached the end of the diamond-bearing ground. The discovery that the blue ground contained even richer deposits of diamonds was a pivotal moment that led to the development of the large-scale industrial mining operations at Kimberley. And Cecil John Rhodes returned from his failed attempt at obtaining a law degree in England to rejoin his brother on the diamond fields to take advantage of all these changes. Jerome Babe wrote in his journal how he rose at the break of day, then dug until 9am. Breakfast was taken until 10am, when the diggers reconvened. Most diggings had two white men and five black men who could get through fifteen cart loads a day. The black workers would wash enough gravel in four hours for the mainly white diggers to sort through in ten hours. At 1pm they all knocked off for lunch until two pm, then washing would end at four pm. That wasn't the end of the day. The washers, the black labourers, would head back to the mining area to gather material for the next day's washes and many miners continued working when there was moon, carrying the gravel to the river for the next day's washing. The diggers committees which had managed these mines was now an unsustainable way to administrate claims. Claim-jumping which took place when a mine was unworked for more than three days had increased instability and litigation was accelerating. It looked chaotic because the rights to small-claim ownership was being circumented by monopolies using fronts, straw men as they were known. Another very old South African tradition. Griqualand West Lieutenant Governor Richard Southey wanted state regulation.

Lo, from the stagnant mire there arose a croak most dreadful, heralding the advent of creatures born of chaos and slime. In this remastered Spooktober hour from 2023, we unmask the Slaad—horrible monsters of Dungeons & Dragons whose laughter curdles into terror. Hark, dear listeners, and let the tolling of the midnight bell stir your marrow— for once more the veil thins, and once more the chill breath of Spooktober draws near. The year wanes, the light falters, and in the gathering gloom we bid you prepare: the 2025 season of RPGBOT.Podcast's Spooktober is nearly upon us. Expect not merely tales of monsters, but phantasms of horror and mirth entwined; expect not idle chatter, but whispers of Dungeons and Dragons and tabletop RPG horrors, woven with the laughter of the damned and the counsel of the grave. Steel your heart, sharpen your dice, and ready your soul for the chaos to come— for in the creeping hours of October, we shall descend together once more into that grotesque carnival of terror and delight… and the monsters shall be waiting. Show Notes In this mournful season of Spooktober, the RPGBOT.Podcast hosts descend into the abyss to reveal the Slaad, one of the most horrible monsters in tabletop RPGs. From the dim vaults of Dungeons and Dragons lore and the infernal margins of the Pathfinder RPG, these chaos beasts emerge—creatures neither wholly comic nor wholly terrifying, but abominations caught between laughter and despair. The discussion charts the evolution of the Slaad lore in Dungeons and Dragons, tracing their spawn from earlier editions through to the present, while casting their warped shadows upon Pathfinder 2e Slaad monster analysis. Their essence is chaotic neutral vs. chaotic evil monsters in RPGs, shifting masks of unpredictability, forever croaking of corruption and madness. These horror monsters serve not only as combatants, but as symbols: infestation, decay, and the slow erosion of body and spirit. To Dungeon Masters yearning for the macabre, the hosts provide counsel on roleplaying tips for using Slaad in campaigns—how to balance absurdity with terror, how to weave dread into encounters, how to stage the crawling metamorphoses of flesh that birth new horrors. This is no idle musing, but a true Spooktober monster deep dive podcast, a lantern held aloft in the darkness for all who dare run horror themed creatures for D&D adventures. RPGBOT.Podcast Season 2 Episode 1 – Variant Rules RPGBOT.Podcast Season 2 Episode 2 – The Move Toward Inclusion in Tabletop Gaming Key Takeaways The Slaad are chaos incarnate, their essence shifting between chaotic neutral vs. chaotic evil monsters in RPGs. Their mark is body-horror most grotesque: infestation, spawning, and vile metamorphosis. They are the perfect choice for Spooktober monster deep dive podcasts and horror themed creatures for D&D adventures. The hosts trace Slaad lore in Dungeons and Dragons and expand into Pathfinder RPG differences. Practical roleplaying tips for using Slaad in campaigns show how to balance comedy with grotesque menace. The episode offers guidance on how to run Slaad encounters in TTRPGs, ensuring dread without monotony. These creatures become living metaphors: corruption, chaos, and despair, bound in the grotesque tapestry of fantasy lore. When placed in a campaign, the Slaad engrave themselves in memory, a croaking echo in the dark—an eternal reminder that in roleplaying games, the most horrible monsters linger long after dice have stilled. Now Go forth, dear traveler, and whisper in trembling tones to those you hold dear: Spooktober is coming. Let not your comrades remain unprepared for the horrors and laughter that await.Bid them gather round the flickering lantern, bid them tune their ears to the RPGBOT.Podcast, that together you may descend into the abyss of dice and dread. Episode 515 marks the very first CG Garage Podcast episode under the Monstrous Moonshine banner, and it's a big reset moment. Chris is joined by longtime collaborator Daniel Thron and new producer/coordinator Lily Nichols to introduce this new chapter. Together, they reflect on the origins of the Monstrous Moonshine name, its ties to both 1970s cinema and mathematics, and why it represents the kind of creative synchronicity they want to bring into filmmaking. They also talk openly about the transition from Chaos, where the podcast began 11 years ago, and what this move means for the future of the show. The discussion quickly moves into the state of the movie industry today, with the group debating whether Hollywood is on the brink of another “New Hollywood” moment like the late 1960s. They examine the rise of bold new films such as Everything Everywhere All at Once, Spider-Verse, K-Pop Demon Hunters, and Godzilla Minus One, contrasting them with the fatigue of endless franchises. The conversation also tackles AI's role in the future of production, the pressures on young filmmakers, and why risk-taking is once again the only way forward. It's both a reflection and a rallying cry: a podcast looking back at its roots while leaning hard into the future of filmmaking. Monstrous Moonshine > CG Garage > Ray Tracing FTW >

Episode 992- Jason Interviews James Aquilone - MONSTROUS: THE KAIJU ISSUEcomic magazine is celebrating Godzilla's 70th anniversary with kaiju comics, short stories, artwork, and articles.  MONSTROUS: THE KAIJU ISSUE features a stacked line-up including:“The Colossus From the Crater,” a brand-new sci-fi short story set on a remote moon and featuring a giant alien mummy, penned by novelist Greg Cox, who wrote the official prose adaptation of Godzilla (2014), soon to be reprinted in a new omnibus edition. An all-new Konga vs. Gorgo comic, featuring the creatures from the cult 1960s American International Pictures movies and Charlton Comics, written by James Aquilone and illustrated by Dave Swartz (Confederate Monster)Two iconic covers — a Konga vs. Gorgo cover by Larry Tuason (Knightingail: The Legend Begins) and a MegaSquatch cover by EV Cantada and colorist Zac Atkinson. Just like these creatures themselves, this new magazine will be enlarged to a full-size 8.5-x-11-inch format. It was previously digest size, so this is certainly an upgrade. Bram Stoker Award-winning editor and writer James Aquilone, who heads up Monstrous Books, had this to say about it:“When I decided to do a Kaiju issue of Monstrous Magazine I couldn't pass up the opportunity to do a Kaiju-size magazine, so we're going from 5.5 x 8.5 to 8.5 x 11 inches. And that's just the beginning. We're resizing the  Monstrous Magazine back issues, too, and now, for a limited time, they will be available in the new collectible, oversized Kaiju format.”Back It: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/manbomb/kaiju?ref=3chte9Theme Songs by Drew: Pages of Terror & Dubstep Kaiju RemixLike & Subscribe on Youtube www.youtube.com/@comicsforfunandprofit5331Patreon https://www.patreon.com/comicsfunprofit Merch https://comicsfunprofit.threadless.comYour Support Keeps Our Show Going On Our Way to a Thousand EpisodesDonate Here https://bit.ly/36s7YeLAll the C4FaP links you could ever need  https://beacons.ai/comicsfunprofit Listen To the Episode Here: https://comcsforfunandprofit.podomatic.com/

Whaling was big business. Connecticut and her sister New England states built ships, forged cast iron tools, produced wooden storage casks and outfitted sailors. Stonington, Mystic, New London, and New Haven were part of New England's predominance in successful whaling. We're going to get into the nitty gritty of the trade in this episode and hear about some of the striking artifacts from Mystic Seaport's whaling collection - tools, ship logs, harpoons, blubber hooks and scrimshaw - that are on view. They speak to the staggering risks and rewards of the whaling industry that lit America's lamps and greased its machines for over a century. We're also going to talk about the largest whaling artifact of all - the Charles W. Morgan, the last American whaling ship in existence. It was considered “ancient” in the 1920s but has been faithfully restored.   This summer we are featuring two episodes on whaling. To get the big picture on whaling, we talked to one of our favorite guests, Eric Jay Dolin, in episode 211, about his book Leviathan, the History of Whaling in America. And in today's episode, we'll visit Mystic Seaport Museum's new exhibition “Monstrous: Whaling and Its Colossal Impact” with curator Mike Dyer. The exhibit explores the sheer scale-physical, economic, and human-of the nation's whaling industry and its legacy. Dyer is the Curator of Maritime History and an Instructor in the Frank C. Munson Institute of American Maritime History at Mystic Seaport Museum. Visitors can tour the new exhibit and visit the Charles W. Morgan  for an unforgettable immersive experience.   *Warning: Listeners may find the content of  this episode disturbing. Whaling was a brutal trade. In this punchy and provocative episode of the Mark and Pete Podcast, we tackle three of Britain's strangest and most telling headlines this week. First, we scrutinise Prime Minister Keir Starmer's policy U-turns, from winter fuel payments to welfare reform and grooming gang inquiries. Is this leadership, or just carefully managed confusion? We unpack the spiritual implications of political inconsistency in high office. Next, it's the tale of two mischievous brown bears breaking into a Devon food store and bingeing on a week's supply of honey. Beyond the giggles, we ask serious questions about stewardship, creation, and why animals sometimes show more wisdom than governments. Finally, we delve into the world of cutting-edge science, where UK researchers are attempting to synthesise human DNA from scratch. We explore the ethical minefield of synthetic biology, its chilling Frankenstein echoes, and whether man should ever try to play God. Each segment is grounded in biblical wisdom and delivered with sharp wit, cultural critique, and a touch of righteous sarcasm. Join Mark and Pete as they bring faith to the frontlines of politics, nature, and science.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/mark-and-pete--1245374/support.

Policy for the People
Another harm from the monstrous U.S. House reconciliation bill: less state revenue

The reconciliation bill passed by the U.S. House is truly monstrous, slashing health care and nutrition assistance to help pay for tax cuts that mainly would go to the rich. But there's more harm that would flow from the bill. One thing that hasn't gotten a lot of attention is the fact that the reconciliation bill threatens to shrink Oregon revenue collections, due to the way our state tax code connects to the federal tax code. As OCPP Deputy Director Daniel Hauser explains in this episode of Policy for the People, if the US House reconciliation bill becomes law and the Oregon legislature does nothing, Oregon will end up having less money to address the needs of Oregonians, just when there will be greater need due to the federal cuts to health care and nutrition assistance.

The Web is running evolution in fast-forward, remixing the very substrates of identity and personhood in a molten broil of post-ironic, post-human, post-truth meme-play that reminds me of nothing more than the porous networked selfhood of bacterial in a molten wash of horizontal gene transfer. RIP the genre and all hail the hyper-real individual as institution, the self-fulfilling prophecies of [EDIT: Guy Debord's] society of the spectacle [and Baudrillard's simulation], the revenge of religion as our accelerating techno-social evolution prompts a kind of reversal as the movement of the Tao that challenges the dreams and ideals of the Enlightenment…it is a time of monsters, a rapid recombination of worlds and ways of living in them. How do we cultivate roughness, fractality, wildness, illegigility? Chinese porcelain arrived in early modern Europe and led to the emergence of chinoiserie, a decorative style that foregrounded European fantasies about the East and the exotic, as well as about women, sexuality, and race. It is on view through August 17. The exhibition catalogue was published by the Met. Amazon and Bookshop offer it for about $35. Instagram: Adrienne Childs, Tyler Green.

Episode 983-Jason Interviews James Aquilone - Darkest Depths - Monstrous Books - James Aquilone is the owner of Monstrous Books, writer of the Dead Jack Zombie Detective series, and editor of the anthologies Classic Monsters Unleashed, Shakespeare Unleashed, and the 50th anniversary Kolchak: The Night Stalker graphic novel. He has won the Bram Stoker Award for Best Graphic Novel and two Rondo Hatton Classic Horror Awards. The launch of DARKEST DEPTHS had been planned for 2023 as a joint project among Crystal Lake Publishing, Bram Stoker award winner James Aquilone, and acclaimed horror author and producer Taylor Grant. Sadly, after Taylor fell ill, the campaign was put on hold. Taylor, who was a development executive at Stan Lee Media and Head of Global Animation at Wattpad WEBTOON Studios, ultimately passed away from cancer in September 2024. Now DARKEST DEPTHS will serve as a tribute to Taylor and feature the last comic story he wrote, “It Lives in Darkness.” Additionally, profits from this crowdfunding campaign will be donated to his son Zane.Taylor believed in helping others and DARKEST DEPTHS will continue his legacy of mentorship by giving writers the opportunity to break into the comic book industry. Following the campaign, submissions will open for additional stories, the number depending on the campaign's final funding level. It is our hope that the DARKEST DEPTHS series will be the launching pad for many aspiring comic book writers.Back It: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/manbomb/darkest-depthsTheme Songs by Drew: Darkest Depths & LegacyLike & Subscribe on Youtube www.youtube.com/@comicsforfunandprofit5331Patreon https://www.patreon.com/comicsfunprofit Merch https://comicsfunprofit.threadless.comYour Support Keeps Our Show Going On Our Way to a Thousand EpisodesDonate Here https://bit.ly/36s7YeLAll the C4FaP links you could ever need  https://beacons.ai/comicsfunprofit Listen To the Episode Here: https://comcsforfunandprofit.podomatic.com/
