Was it a confession or was it simply the need to share a personal story by someone who did the unthinkable? Perhaps it takes someone who films a lot of encounters with strangers to film the story from a complete stranger. But it goes without saying, having a camera on you at all times…a smartphone, the opportunity to record and share it would have been missed.CK Goldiing is a storyteller. One of the things that intrigue CK him are the stories humans share. CK made a film which he shot with his smartphone, that went viral. CK Goldiing attended the International Mobile Film Festival in San Diego 2019 edition as a VIP Special Guest. The film he presented, 61 Hugs, just won several awards in the UK. CK had never been in San Diego before and during his visit he thoroughly enjoyed the festival and everyone he connected with. But just a couple days before the festival, CK was waiting at a bus stop and unknown to him at that moment, a story for his next film began to unfold. How many times does someone who has killed someone open up to you? And then give you permission to record it? Perhaps it was because the smartphone camera is such a familiar device, it was not an awkward request for someone to ask to record the story. Perhaps, it was the fact that CK has an affinity to interact with people he has never met before. The film premiers January 12th 2020 online. Waiting With A Killer is a documentary shot by CK which captivates you from the first scene and holds your attention until the end. Sitting on the edge of your seat and with your eyes wide open, you experience the story from CK’s perspective. During this episode of the SBP Podcast Mobile Filmmaking, you will listen to our conversation as we discuss his new film and then a bit of a breakdown into how and why the subject of the story, Mathew, shared some of the most intimate details of his experience from a perspective most of us cannot comprehend. It is toward the end that our discussion goes to a level where we both open up and look a bit underneath the top layer of what people have experienced, how they feel and why stories can be therapeutic. Documentary filmmakers realize that when they interview people and victims. One of the best things about mobile filmmaking if you are producing documentaries? The heart of the documentary is in capturing the reality of a story or situation. While there are many types of documentaries, the opportunities to capture life’s most intriguing moments is within reach for almost every human being around the world. But what is captivating about a documentary, is how the storyteller strings together the story from beginning to end. Aaron Nabus here and thanks for tuning into the Hall H Show, the voice of independent creators! What does someone who suffers from massive overthinking do when challenged to do something crazy like give 61 hugs to 61 random people? This was the premise for an incredible short movie that I watched at this year's International Mobile Film Festival that was created by CK Goldiing, an artist and presenter from Sheffield, England. CK filmed himself walking around Sheffield, asking complete strangers for a hug, all in one take! His viral video, 61 Hugs, is a fascinating social experiment that showcases how someone terrified by the potential rejections, forges on ahead anyway with the winds of spontaneity, optimism, goodwill and human spirit at his back. 61 Hugs challenges CK's long-standing belief that "overthinking is the enemy of remarkable." I smile each time I think about this remarkable film. Please enjoy my conversation with CK Golding, which almost didn't happen! But in true CK fashion, the randomness of the universe had other plans for us. Enjoy!
We encounter stories throughout our daily lives. We are living at a time where we carry a tool that can capture a story and share it with the world. CK Goldiing records his encounters and challenges with his smartphone and one of them is a film that is going viral. CK came to speak during the International Mobile Film Festival #MFF2019SanDiego and we featured his film, 61 Hugs which he shot with his Samsung smartphone. Episode 57 of the SBP Podcast Mobile Filmmaking is a conversation with CK on his last day before he flew back to the UK with a high potential to inspire storytellers to use their phone cameras to share their stories. The conversation with CK began casually with his film, 61 Hugs. But it soon becomes passionate as we discuss the storytelling aspect of video and film. We speak about how a moment can turn into a great story and some of that has to do with what people are willing to share with you when they trust you. The other aspect of recording moments is distribution. We asked CK his preference and one thing he shares is how he doesn’t limit the potential of his videos by restricting them to a particular manner of distribution such as a series. However, he does have a series of videos in his YouTube channel with some videos becoming popular. 61 Hugs is going viral, not as a part of the series, but as a film. CK Goldiiing has his own marketing agency and he knows how to reach out to the press which he did for his film and his marketing skills are a great example of how you can help your film go viral. The main point he wanted to share was that his film was a human story. He also gives our listeners some insights on how to get traction for your film or story to get it press attention.CK discusses giving his film “as much oxygen as possible.” In order to do that, he had to not feel “icky” about sharing the film, and that is part of the challenge for content creators. Where you feel like perhaps you have already shared your film on Twitter enough but, no you haven’t. And there are always people who may see it today who did not see it yesterday. The experience of being a part of the film festival in San Diego meant a lot for CK, and he shares the essence of what drives us to organize it each year. IMFF 2019 was the 8th edition and we celebrated Stories! as the theme during the 10th anniversary since it was launched in 2009. CK thanks each of the sponsors for this year’s film festival. He also challenged creators to listen to his advice on getting traction with their projects with a Seven-Day Challenge to “give oxygen” to their creations and share their results with CK. One storyteller, accidentally turned one of his videos into a film. In Episode 44 of the SBP Podcast, CK Goldiing shares the story that has inspired captivated the attention of people around the world with its emotional draw. 61 Hugs was a challenge that has made touched many people and brought smiles and shines the light on human kindness in a very simple way. An in-depth discussion about how we can all turn our phones to capture every day moments that tell wonderful stories which connect us as human beings. No special gear needed. All you need is an open mind, perhaps a little challenge and a sprinkle of curiosity as you turn the lens on yourself and the people around you. Through kindness, respect and a bit of humor, complete strangers will gladly let down their guards and go as far as to give a random stranger a hug. Listen to CK share his experiences and what the outcome of his film, 61 Hugs has brought to people who watch it and to his understanding of people and storytelling. “Crippled by a lifetime of overthinking, CK is a typical artist - forever worried about rejection, people’s perceptions and how things look. One day, he is challenged to leave his house, walk the busy streets, and ask sixty-one strangers for a hug. Although terrified by the inevitable rejections ahead, CK accepts, clinging to his long-standing belief that ‘overthinking is the enemy of remarkable’. Filmed in one take using actual footage from the challenge, ’61 Hugs’ demonstrates the remarkable power of optimism, heart, goodwill, human spirit, spontaneity and the universe.” — 61 HugsSBP Podcast: The Voice of Mobile Film™ is for everyone who ever wanted to or is curious about making movies and videos using smartphones.Do you like our podcast? OVERTHINKING. The double edged sword of a an introspective mind. The kind of mind that enables us to use creativity to forge a career in the arts, but also leaves us wide open to worry, procrastination and vulnerability where others just walk on by. I'm joined by CK Goldiing, content creator and filmmaker who was challenged to walk from his home in Sheffield, to the city centre and hug 61 strangers in an effort to overcome his overthinking problem.
