Tragedies often reveal what we're really made of. When times are unthinkably tough, heroes rise up, offering sacrificial acts of courage, endurance, and love toward others. These acts of faith are reflections of God's light, the brightness that shines when life is dim. Some of those heroic acts make headlines, while others are performed quietly. At Horizon, we'll explore six tragedies -- the Titanic, Chernobyl, Mount St. Helens, Concentration Camps, the Crippled Flight 1380, and the Chicago Fire -- and see how real people shone brightly amidst the darkness, pointing us to God's presence in suffering.

fWotD Episode 3193: Ford Foundation Center for Social Justice Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia's finest articles. The featured article for Saturday, 31 January 2026, is Ford Foundation Center for Social Justice. The Ford Foundation Center for Social Justice (also known as 320 East 43rd Street, 321 East 42nd Street, or the Ford Foundation Building) is a 12-story office building in the East Midtown Manhattan neighborhood of New York City, New York, United States. Completed in 1967, it was designed in the late modernist style by architect Kevin Roche and engineering partner John Dinkeloo of Roche-Dinkeloo. The building was commissioned as the headquarters of the Ford Foundation, the largest private foundation in the United States when the edifice was constructed. The building is a glass-and-steel cube held up by piers made of concrete and clad with Dakota granite. The main entrance is along 43rd Street, and there is a secondary entrance on 42nd Street. Dan Kiley was the landscape architect for the large public atrium inside, the first such space in an office building in Manhattan; it includes trees, shrubs, vines, and other plants. Most of the building's offices are north and west of the atrium and are visible from other offices.Commissioned after Henry Heald became the Ford Foundation's president, the structure was developed on the former site of the Hospital for the Ruptured and Crippled. Final plans for the Ford Foundation Building were announced in September 1964, and the building was formally dedicated on December 8, 1967. The building underwent a major renovation and restoration between 2015 and 2018, and it was renamed the Ford Foundation Center for Social Justice. The Ford Foundation Building has received critical acclaim for its design following both completion and renovation, and the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission has designated the building and its atrium as city landmarks. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:34 UTC on Saturday, 31 January 2026.For the full current version of the article, see Ford Foundation Center for Social Justice on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Bluesky at @wikioftheday.com.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm standard Russell.

Thirty-six years after he was arrested and convicted, the most successful double-agent to ever work inside the Central Intelligence Agency died this week at the Federal Correctional Institution at Cumberland, Maryland. From 1985, when he began selling secrets to the Soviet Union, Aldrich Hazen Ames compromised over 100 CIA operations, enabled the execution of ten high-level sources, and helped plant disinformation which made its way to three United States presidents. An official investigation concluded he “caused more damage to the national security of the United States than any spy in the history of the CIA.” watch @praveenswami explains in @theprintindia #Explorer the most important lesson of the Ames case—which is how easy it was for him to get away with it. What strange tools the Carpenter of Nazareth used to shape a Simon into a Peter! His instruments of change were fish, roosters, pigs, and ordinary people like his wife, his brother, and even his mother-in-law. Shaped by adversity and hammered by time and circumstance, "The Rock" was chiseled into shape on the workbench of this world. What tools will God's carpenter use to get us into spiritual shape? He gives us, as He gave Peter, the privilege and capacity to cooperate in the process. He has the power to change us as He did Peter. Throughout the war on the Eastern Front, there were two consistent trends. The Red Army battled to learn how to fight and win, while involved in a struggle for its very survival. But by 1944 it had a leadership that was able to wield it with lethal effect and with far more effective equipment than before. By contrast, the Wehrmacht had commenced a slow process of decline after the invasion of the Soviet Union. Hitler became increasingly unwilling to delegate decision-making to commanders in the field, which had been crucial to earlier success. The long years of fighting had also taken a heavy toll. Thousands of irreplaceable junior officers and NCOs were dead, wounded or prisoners.Today’s guest is Prit Buttar, author of “Bagration 1944: The Great Soviet Offensive.” We look at these trends, which culminated in the huge battles of Bagration. In 1944, the Red Army finally put together a campaign that utterly destroyed the German Army Group Centre. The Wehrmacht suffered the loss of over 300,000 men killed, wounded or taken prisoner and the Red Army rolled forward across Belarus to the outskirts of Warsaw. The end of the war was still many months away, and the Germans managed to reconstruct their line on the Eastern Front, but final victory for the Soviet Union was now only a matter of time as a direct consequence of Bagration.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
