When the MacArthur Foundation named its class of 2023 “genius grant" fellows last month, the recipients joined an exclusive group of previous fellows who have demonstrated outstanding talent and leadership in their fields. Interdisciplinary scholar and writer Imani Perry is one of this year's MacArthur fellows. “I describe my work in part as haunting the past,” Perry said. “I'm trying to train my attention on those who were disregarded in the past as a way of shaping our ethics for the present and the future. So it's sort of like trying to catch a hold of freedom, dreams that have existed over the course of generations, train my gaze and shine a light on them.” Perry, who is also a Boston University professor, studies the history and the cultural expressions forged by Black Americans in the face of injustice. There are 20 MacArthur fellows across the country, and Perry is one of four based in the Boston area. We talked with professor Perry for Under the Radar's series, “The Genius Next Door.”

This week's show is with the amazing Dr Joanna Laprade. Joanna LaPrade, M.A. Ph.D., is a Registered Psychotherapist, author, speaker, and educator. Joanna LaPrade, M.A. Ph.D., earned her doctorate in Jungian and archetypal psychology from Pacifica Graduate Institute. She is now the founder of Aion Psychotherapy and a practicing Jungian psychotherapist in Colorado. Her therapeutic work focuses on helping clients find a meaningful connection to their inner worlds. Outside of her practice, Dr. LaPrade is a speaker and educator whose expertise focus on myth, psyche, and the Jungian and archetypal perspective. She is also the author of Forged in Darkness: The Many Paths of Personal Transformation, a book that unites self-discovery with mythology, to handle an important dilemma of our times—how to navigate the darkness of life. In this conversation, Dr Joanna and Lian dived deep into the underworld, what that means for us personally and in our work with others, the challenges of that given the functioning bias of our modern culture, and how we can better honour and become intimate with the dark places in our psyches and our work. I'd love to know what YOU think about this week's show. Let's carry on the conversation… please leave a comment below. What you'll learn from this episode: Our culture is so focused on functioning, the direct route, bigger, brighter and braver, it can be very unwelcome to be pulled into the underworld to meet the parts of ourselves that have been left there, especially when that entails a risk of not functioning As change workers we need to go first, embodying and modeling an intimacy with the darkness, it is only from here that we can hold the space for our clients to do the same The myths can illuminate the path into and out of the darkness - allowing us to see the deeper, collective, and archetypal nature of what we're experiencing Resources and stuff that we spoke about: For more information about Dr. Joanna's work, visit www.aionpsychotherapy.com Thank you for listening! Hello again Golfists, I got to go out to the range on a Friday afternoon and shake down a new to me set of irons that I traded a bunch of putters for last week. The Joint Readiness Training Center is pleased to present the thirty-fifth episode to air on ‘The Crucible - The JRTC Experience.' Hosted by the Command Sergeant Major of Ops Group (COG), CSM Michael Hall. Today's guest is the Command Sergeant Major of 3-89th Cavalry Squadron, 3rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, CSM Andrew Baxter. The 3rd Squadron, 89th Cavalry Regiment also draws its heritage from the 899th Tank Destroyer Battalion of infamy during the North African Campaign of World War II. In an interesting bit of trivia, the IBCT was for over a decade known as the 4th IBCT of 10th Mountain, but when the Army redesigned division for the “Army of 2020” concept, they became 3rd IBCT of 10th Mountain. (The “Spartan” Brigade was inactivated in August 2014.) They have the Hollywood call-sign of “Slugger” and the motto of “Ready Now,” while the IBCT has the call-sign “Patriots” and the motto of “Forged for War.” In this episode we discuss the roll of the noncommissioned officer within a cavalry squadron as well as the Army as a whole. The NCOs are the commanders' “linebackers” with the goal of maintaining good order and discipline of the formation. As leaders, we have to strive to shift our formations from the garrison mindset to a “combat” mindset focused on lethality and overall readiness. We have to re-hone the edge of the NCO corps to be much more focused on direct leadership instead of the more passive, non-confrontational approach while still being professional, especially for our junior NCOs. The value of the specialist within our formations cannot be overemphasized as they fill the gap between Soldier and the NCO corps having proven their merit by mastering their skill level one tasks. Part of S04 “Scouts Out” series. Derek Arden In this week's Monday Night Live Podcast, Derek Arden talks to the incredible author about his new book. The interviewer Derek praised Damien's storytelling style of moving from one chapter to another, sometimes going back and forth, which keeps readers interested. Damien explained that his writing style is a result of extensive research and planning. He creates a detailed plan with a chronology of events and sources for each event. This plan helps him maintain the flow of the narrative and quickly access the necessary sources while writing. He mentioned that the research process, including gathering sources and creating the research document, takes far longer than actually writing the book. It can take months and months of work to put the research together. When asked about the time it took to write "SAS - Forged in Hell," Damien mentioned that it took about three months to write, but the research for the book took several years. Damien shared personal experiences from his book events where he met family members of veterans and how they found his book emotionally powerful and transformative. He emphasized the importance of personal testimonies in his research. He mentioned the grandson of one of the SAS veterans thanking him for writing the book and for unlocking memories and stories that his father had never shared before. Damien also talked about his friendship with Alec Bora, one of the last surviving SAS veterans from World War Two, and how he interviewed Alec before his passing. He highlighted the deep bond and respect that SAS soldiers had for their commanding officers. The interview touched on the concept of "transformational command" in the SAS, where leaders inspire their men through their example and forge strong bonds. This style of leadership is about earning respect rather than simply relying on rank. Damien explained that transformational command is recognized in the military and also in business and industry, and the SAS often lectures on it to businesses. The conversation mentioned neurodiversity and how the SAS valued individuals who could think outside the box and act unexpectedly, especially during World War Two. Damien briefly discussed the Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, which was the Special Operations Executive (SOE) during World War Two, and their unconventional methods of warfare. There was a mention of Hitler's directive to kill captured Allied agents and Special Forces operators during the war, even if they were in uniform, which was a war crime. Damien also talked about the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich in Prague by SOE agents and the severe reprisals that followed, including the destruction of the village they came from. The interview concluded with a question about how Damien chooses his book titles. He explained that titles often emerge from the writing process and may be related to key quotes or themes within the book. A question about how he decides where to start and finish a book in his extensive research was also asked, and Damien mentioned that it's an instinctive process that comes out of writing and selecting the most relevant characters and operations to include in the narrative. Thankfulness leads us into the presence of God and is an appropriate response to what God has done in our lives. As we wrap up our series, “Forged,” JP shows us three unavoidable obstacles that are found in Scripture and how to combat them. JP looks to 1 Peter to show us how anxiety, temptation and suffering can be combated with a Kingdom first mindset. 1 Peter 5:6-10 1) In anxiety, humble yourself 2) In temptation, resist the devil 3) In suffering, practice patienceLife Group Questions: 1) When faced with anxiety, how can you effectively cast those burdens on the Lord knowing how much He cares for you? 2) Was there a time when you were hesitant to bring sin to the light out of fear that others wouldn't understand? What is a verse that you have clung to when faced with temptation? 3) What is a way that you can help others practice patience in times of suffering? Explain a time where you were shown grace in the midst of suffering.

Taiwan has been depicted as an island facing the incessant threat of forcible unification with the People's Republic of China. Why, then, has Taiwan spent more than three decades pouring capital and talent into China? In Rival Partners: How Taiwanese Entrepreneurs and Guangdong Officials Forged the China Development Model (Harvard UP, 2022), Wu Jieh-min follows the development of Taiwanese enterprises in China over twenty-five years and provides fresh insights. The geopolitical shift in Asia beginning in the 1970s and the global restructuring of value chains since the 1980s created strong incentives for Taiwanese entrepreneurs to rush into China despite high political risks and insecure property rights. Taiwanese investment, in conjunction with Hong Kong capital, laid the foundation for the world's factory to flourish in the southern province of Guangdong, but official Chinese narratives play down Taiwan's vital contribution. It is hard to imagine the Guangdong model without Taiwanese investment, and, without the Guangdong model, China's rise could not have occurred. Going beyond the received wisdom of the “China miracle” and “Taiwan factor,” Wu delineates how Taiwanese businesspeople, with the cooperation of local officials, ushered global capitalism into China. By partnering with its political archrival, Taiwan has benefited enormously, while helping to cultivate an economic superpower that increasingly exerts its influence around the world. This book is the winner of 2023 Global and Transnational Sociology Best Publication (Book) by an International Scholar Award, the American Sociological Association, 國科會111年度(2022) 傑出研究獎, 2020年第九屆中央研究院人文及社會科學學術性專書獎, 科技部2020最具影響 力研究專書(人文及社會科學領域), 2019年孫運璿學術獎最佳書籍. Today, we're starting a two-part miniseries on forming godly men. I have such a passion for seeing men rise up in purity, power, virtue, integrity, character, compassion, and strength. And so joining us today is Professor Nancy Pearcey. Heralded as "America's pre-eminent evangelical Protestant female intellectual" in The Economist, Pearcey earned a Master's degree from Covenant Theological Seminary and pursued further graduate work in the History of Philosophy at the Institute for Christian Studies in Toronto. Currently, she is a professor and scholar in residence at Houston Baptist University. Today, she'll share with us how men benefit from being fathers, how Darwin forged the secularization of the postmodern masculine script, how masculinity became "toxic," and why boys fail to launch. As we continue in our series, “Forged,” JP reminds us that Christians must lean closer to God in times of suffering because He is sanctifying us. JP looks to 1 Peter to show us five things we should not do in suffering. As we seek to become more like Christ, we must rejoice in suffering because our Savior suffered for us on our behalf.1 Peter 4:12-19 1) Do not be surprised in suffering 2) Do not be discouraged in suffering 3) Do not be guilty in suffering 4) Do not be ashamed in suffering 5) Do not suffer outside of God's will because our Savior suffered for us on our behalf.Life Group Questions:1. JP shared that approximately 13 Christians are killed each day for sharing their faith. How can you be diligent to pray for those who are being persecuted for their faith? How can you grow in sharing your faith with others?2. What is a spiritual discipline that you have seen growth in after experiencing a time of suffering?3. Has there been a time when you suffered because of sin? How have you experienced God's grace as you've fully surrendered your sufferings to the Lord?
