This episode developed thanks to Nick, who thought it would be a good time to revisit a bit of my history in coffee to reconnect with long-time listeners, and to share a bit more about myself with new listeners. We started this podcast about 6 years ago, and if you've been through all 72 episodes, you probably have a good idea about my coffee philosophies. But I also know that not everyone enjoys, or maybe even has the time to go back and start at the very beginning of a podcast. So we thought it would be a good opportunity to give you a bit of my coffee origin story, and a manifesto of sorts, all under one roof.Resources:Responses, Inquiries, & questions about coffee sales or future Fermentation Training Camps: info.luxiacoffee@gmail.comSupport the show on Patreon to join our live Discord hangouts, and get access to research papers, transcripts and videos. And if you don't want to commit, show your support here with a one time contribution: PayPalSign up for the newsletter for behind the scenes pictures.Cover Art by: Nick HafnerIntro song: Elijah BisbeeSupport the show

As you're listening, Father's Day 2025 has likely passed, but the TSHE Coven (™) want to talk about their dad and aspirational dad hobbies. Woodworking, The West Wing, and home improvement goals all top the list. We might not be fathers, but we still want to read 800 page novels about John Adams (at least Hillary does)! In other news, Hillary describes Steel Magnolias as dramatized by teens, Meredith gets an instructive voice memo, and somehow (?) the Coven dives into a lengthy tangent about Superman (?). Out of the Question Podcast: Uncovering the Question Behind the Question
Culture mocks “traditional” manhood, but it has nothing to replace it. Thus, culture trains boys to chase glory while Scripture trains them to carry responsibility. Here's the difference and why it matters.
Today, we gathered to face one of the most challenging realities of our faith: the presence of suffering and the question of why God allows pain, even for those who love Him. We began by celebrating the good news of God's work through our church family—both locally and globally—reminding ourselves that every good thing is a gift from God's grace. Yet, as we continued in our “Forged” series, we turned to the hard truth that life is not always as we plan, and sometimes God's path for us includes pain, disappointment, and unanswered prayers.Drawing from 2 Corinthians 12, we looked at the life of Paul, a man who experienced both extraordinary blessings and deep suffering. Paul's “thorn in the flesh” is a powerful reminder that even the most faithful followers of Jesus are not exempt from hardship. Paul pleaded with God to remove his suffering, but God's answer was not what he expected. Instead of removal, God offered His sustaining grace: “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” This is a truth that runs throughout Scripture—God does not always change our circumstances, but He changes us in the midst of them.We explored the analogy of photography, where negatives are necessary to produce positives. In the same way, the negatives in our lives—the pain, the disappointments, the thorns—are part of the process God uses to develop us into the image of Christ. We are not promised a life free from suffering, but we are promised God's presence and His grace to sustain us. The story of Job, the suffering of the apostles, and ultimately the suffering of Jesus Himself all point to a God who redeems pain and uses it for His glory and our good. The challenge for us is not to avoid suffering, but to lean into it, trusting that God is forging something beautiful even in the darkroom of our pain. We can choose to become bitter, battered, or better. The invitation is to allow God's grace to meet us in our weakness, to let our suffering become a platform for His power, and to remember that this is not the end—heaven is ahead, and God's redemption is sure.Chapters :[00:00] - Welcome[01:00] - Celebrating God's Work Through Our Church[03:30] - The Apollo 13 “Successful Failure” and God's Unexpected Plans[05:45] - Prayer for God's Comfort and Guidance[08:01] - Rethinking “Why Do Bad Things Happen to Good People?”[10:38] - The Reality of Sin and God's Grace[12:40] - Paul's Suffering and the “Thorn in the Flesh”[15:40] - Wrestling with God's Refining Process[18:27] - The Analogy of Negatives and Positives in Life[21:11] - The Darkroom: How God Develops Us Through Pain[25:32] - Suffering in the Story of Scripture[27:39] - Paul's Visions, Blessings, and Humility[32:28] - God's Grace in Weakness[54:10] - Choices in Suffering: Bitter, Battered, or Better[01:04:11] - Closing Prayer and Invitation

In this episode of Bionic Planet, we continue our dive into the complex and often contentious world of community conservancies in northern Kenya, focusing on the Biliqo Bulesa and Cherub Community Conservancies. The episode opens with a powerful statement from community members, emphasizing that the ongoing legal battles surrounding these conservancies are not about the interests of the community but rather the agendas of a few individuals. We introduce Mustafa Mohamed Libin, a community member from Biliqo Bulesa, who shares the story of how his community took bold steps in 2007 to form a conservancy that is truly community-run, contrasting it with the historical context of land ownership in the region. The episode highlights the positive impacts of the conservancy, including the revival of traditional grazing practices and the introduction of carbon finance to support community initiatives. However, the narrative takes a darker turn as we discuss the backlash faced by the conservancies, particularly following a report from the Oakland Institute that accused the Northern Rangelands Trust (NRT) of various human rights abuses. We explore the subsequent media frenzy that ensued, often lacking proper fact-checking and failing to consult actual community leaders. The episode serves as a follow-up to episode 117, providing deeper insights into the crisis faced by the community and the urgent need for their voices to be heard. Throughout the episode, we hear directly from community members, including youth representatives and conservancy leaders, who express their concerns about the recent court ruling that deemed the conservancies illegal due to alleged lack of consent. They recount their shock at the judgment, which they claim was made without their knowledge or participation, and discuss the significant benefits the conservancies have brought to their lives, including access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities. The community members passionately defend the conservancies, asserting that the allegations made against them are unfounded and that the real beneficiaries of the conservancy are the local people. They highlight the transformative impact of the conservancy on women's empowerment, youth engagement, and community development, emphasizing that the conservancy is a lifeline for their livelihoods. As the episode progresses, we address the misconceptions propagated by external organizations and the media, which often portray the conservancies in a negative light. The community members clarify the differences between community-run conservancies and private conservancies, asserting their ownership and the positive changes that have occurred since the establishment of their conservancy. In closing, the episode underscores the importance of community voices in the narrative surrounding conservation efforts. The community members call for transparency and engagement from external organizations, urging them to visit and understand the realities on the ground rather than relying on hearsay. This episode is a powerful testament to the resilience of the Biliko Bulesa and Cherub communities and their unwavering commitment to protecting their rights and livelihoods amidst external challenges. Today we discuss the hard truth most people don't want to hear — freedom isn't something you vote for, it's something you take. You can scream at the sky, protest bad laws, and hope the next election changes things, but if you're waiting on permission to live free, you're already in chains. In this episode, I lay out what it actually looks like to take freedom back into your own hands — one area at a time. We'll hit the big ones: food, money, speech, time, health, education, and more.
